Queensryche favorites of mine, Walk in the Shadows, Take Hold the Flame in conjunction with Child of Fire ( I'll always believe the two were meant to be heard together) and Prophecy. The whole Operation Mind Crime album. Just putting it out there.
Amazing. Back in 1986, my friend and I were listening to ZRock and we heard what we thought was new Iron Maiden. It was Queensrycke, releasing the previously unheard "Prophecy".
Both albums Operation Mindcrime & Empire are amazing from cover to cover !! The lyrics, especially on Empire, are completely relevant today in pointing out political corruption and the divide between upper and middle classes as well as the turmoil and civil unrest in most countries nowadays. The band tackled great issues with their lyrics throughout both albums.
I saw Geoff Tate (ex-lead singer who sing this track) live last Thursday. He opened the show with this song, and was note-perfect over 30 years after he laid this down. Great show! Great reaction!
Queensryche original lineup is one the talented bands. Geoff Tate is one of the best vocalists ever. As he ages of course it shows, but nonetheless most talented. The oldest albums will give you chills and in amazement.
I just subscribed wit my account, but have watched your videos with my husband’s account. Lex, may I say that I love your passion in discovering hard rock, but mostly metal songs. When I see you rocking out I think she would be so fun to hang with listening to metal. Rock on 🤘🏼 and don’t stop! 🎸Lynette
I started my music journey with “hair” and metal bands from the 80’s, as that was what my older friends were into. That was right before alternative and grunge hit. Those (alt rock) I definitely identified with much more. So the early (metal) influences died away as I found my place with bands like Smashing pumpkins, Our Lady peace, the Cure, the cranberries, Toad the Wet Sprocket and STP. I rarely, if ever, listen to any of those older guitar soloey, metal bands anymore. Queensryche is the one exception! They have stayed with me and the love for their brand of rock has only gotten stronger. My first ever album purchases were “Empire” and the cranberries, “No need to argue.” Empire is such a great album! You should check out “Della Brown” “Anybody listening” and “Hand on heart”. Really the entire thing. Also their next album Promise Land is really good but, a very different vibe. So glad to see you delve into such a great and underrated band. Btw, as great as Geoff sounds on record, he sounds even better live.
This entire album is amazing. Della Brown, Jet City Woman, Another Rainy Night, Silent Lucidity. I still rock this album and will for time eternal. Geoff Tate’s vocals are unmatchable and the fact that Queensryche felt they could make it without Geoff shows who the intelligent ones were in the group.
Hey guys, this is one of my all time favorite songs. It is thirty years old and still holds up to modern metal (to my ears). The song is pro-police and anti- crack.
Lex when you said who the singer's voice sounded like to you Bruce Dickerson from iron maiden mixed with Steve Perry from journey. I never would have put that together but you hit the nail on the head sweetheart. You and Brad man y'all see and hear things sometimes that just blow my mind. Especially when you point things out about music that I grew up with.
Queensryche is my favorite band ever! PERIOD! Geoffs voice in this song is very different. He has the best pure voice ever. He has 9 years of opera training. His voice is powerful, unreal vibrato, charisma, purity, word announcement, its rich and subtle too, its truly an fine tuned instrument. The harmony of this band is awesome. Everyone plays their instrument way above average. Chris DeGarmo in any other band would be a lead singer. All of their songs have profound meaning. Seen them 11 times and Geoff 2 times. Love this music.... dig more into the Ryche, I promise you will be astounded!
I was lucky I got to see Queensrÿche twice my very first concert ever in 1989 and then again at 91 they were with suicidal tendencies open for them and they played all of operation mind crime
Great reaction and yes the lead singer of Queensryche does sound a bit like the lead singer of Iron Maiden and the band Queensryche state Iron Maiden is one of their largest influences. But as this band grew into their own they started creating their own sound. This song is part of a whole concept album and probably should be listened to all at once. Like Pink Floyd with Dark Side of the Moon album. Way better when you hear it in the context of the album. These songs have amazing videos and are worth watching. Chris
That was a great observation! I first heard Queensryche when they released their self-titled EP. A friend and I both bought it, took them back to our own rooms in our barracks and listened. We both came running out saying Geoff Tate sounded like a mix of Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden) and Rob Halford (Judas Priest)
Kind of odd to call Empire a "concept" album when the album directly preceeding it is an actual concept album. I'd say Empire def has a theme running through its tracks. Not like Mindcrime, tho.
Boy! She nailed it! The first time I heard Queensryche back in the 80’s I immediately thought of how it reminded me of Bruce Dickinson and Iron Maiden.
Empire is what we call a concept album. Each song only tells one chapter but all together they form a story. This album is all about a future society that is controlled by a militant government complex. This song draws parallels between that fictional future and society today. Illustrating that we are currently on the path to that fictional society, and that album was released in 1990.
Empire and operation mindcrime are one of the best albums these guys ever made. But, if you listen to operations mindcrime, you have to do the whole album. The songs have to go in order.
Okay, I joke, or kinda exaggerate on these comments sometimes. But, for a second, let me be ABSOLUTELY truthful... I saw this band live when this album came out, and Geoff Tate (the singer) sounded EXACTLY like THIS in real life! My jaw was on the floor!!! He's an AMAZING singer!!! Its like watching opera while you're ready to kick someone's ass!
You lit us on fire with this one, thank you guys! Great song, great album. Where are all the UA-cam reactions to this band?? Not just the hits, this band so many amazing songs. You could react to every song off Rage for Order, and we would love you forever.
4:30 "It sounds like amplified acoustic guitar. Like; it might be an electric guitar, I don't know..." ------------------------------------ Great ear Lex!! What you are hearing is an electric guitar on the "clean channel" of the amplifier. When people listen to modern hard rock or heavy metal guitar, they are usually listening to "distortion". That is to say, the guitar's natural sound is _intentionally_ made to sound 'fuzzy', or 'staticky' for lack of a better term. There are a number of reasons for this, including increased sustain of the note, plus it just sounds cool. It doesn't _have_ to be like that though. Most modern guitar amps have both a "clean" (non-distorted) and "lead" (distorted) channel. It just depends on the player's preference or what the song calls for. ;o)
Queensryche was a great band🤘 Most of their true talent came between '83 and '88🤘 With songs like: Queen of the Reich, The Lady Wore Black, Road to Madness, Before the Storm, Walk in the Shadows, Screaming in Digital, Speak, The Mission, and Eyes of a Stranger🤘🤘🤘
Great song for what was going on in the world at the time ! Another must listen to by them is "eyes of a stranger " great guitar solos, voice harmonizing and Geoff Tate really belts out the vocals- great range
Chris Degarmo was known for using a double neck guitar sometimes, so that almost acoustic sound, was either a electric guitar switching to a clean tone, or switching the tone and his hands over On a double neck electric guitar.
They were my first concert. Type O Negative was the opener. Lots of really good songs, but Eyes of A Stranger is one of their most epic songs and off possibly their best album, Operation: Mind time.
My band got double booked with them in, I think, Baltimore during the beginning of their tour of this album. Which I don't know how that happened. Anyway....we ended up in the audience. Lol. And it was awesome
The opening of the song references the Wah Mee massacre, a shoot out in the international district in Seattle (China Town), it was a fight between two competing drug gangs trying to expand into what was traditionally seen as Chinese Tong gang territory. It left 13 total dead, 10 of which were just civilians there for a drink and some gambling. Seattle like a number of cities in the late 80's and early 90's was a city where LA's Bloods and Crips gangs expanded into franchising crack. It took a bit of effort on their part because the Rainier Valley area of town was actually kind of nice in comparison to other inner city areas (no lie it has a PGA 18 hole golf course and lake front houses in spots), and you could get a job paying close to $20 an hour at Boeing reasonably easy, so a lot of the first wave went legit rather than face off with existing local gangs and armed civilians: The first drive by shooting in that era had 24 armed civilians riddling the car with bullets; Seattle had/has a rather large number of people legally carrying a concealed firearm on the daily. Also Seattle is an "open combat" city. You can call the cops to referee a straight up fist fight with ZERO legal implications.. you challenge some dude to settle it outside and they accept? YOU WILL be throwing hands and the local street gangs would carry things like Makita rechargeable drills and chainsaws... Then there was the one neighborhood watch run by a granny in her late 70's that hired a mercenary to blow up crack houses and also quarantined a few blocks while the locals took baseball bats to the dealers.... but anywhooooo So yeah this song is all about building a drug empire and a commentary about the politics of the era. If you don't know this band is about as political as RATM... I suggest highly listening to "Spreading the Disease" from Operation Mindcrime.
The whole mindcrime album tells a complete story thru each of the songs I still get little details 30 years later and for me it's their best album #masterpiece
Queensryche's 1990 album 'Empire' tends to get overlooked... 6 singles and 3X platinum sales in the US. 'Silent lucidity' was the huge hit ballad... but there were so many great songs - 'Best I can' ... 'Anybody listening?' ... 'Jet city woman' ... 'Another rainy night' ... 'Resistance' ... 🔥🔥🔥🤘
Also this song is from the album called Empire too, it's about Foreboding and Unstoppable Empire of drug trafficking within the USA and it's related crimes, That will inevitably lead to the breakdown of civility in American society!
This band was HUGE in the 90's with Operation and Empire which absolutely Rocked the Charts from start to finish. This song taljs about the Crack Epidemic that hit the US and really got the Gangs in NY and LA involved which split them up and set the Gangs off against rach other for Control of what Block or what Territory that they were trying to Control and defend against Rivals. Queensryche with Empire went straight to the Streets with this one Which shaped the album itself
When the song came out, there was a crime wave raging in America. There was a huge call for more law enforcement. The Empire was in reference to drug empires being built. The entire album was a concept metaphor for drugs in America at the time.
The first verse is actually referring to the worst mass murder is seattle history in which members of a rival chinese tong raided an underground gambling parlor in seattle's chinatown during which 14 people were told to lie facedown and were systematically executed with a single bullet to the head. Of the 14 victims 12 died one survived and one remains comatose too this day, its known as the wa me massacre.
He's pointing out (back then) that drug dealing and violence is on the rise and the federal government spends next to nothing to enforce the law, so here we are. He felt it coming, now it's here.
Album was released in August of 1990 and Empire is a song about the rise of crime throughout the 80's as many areas in the USA were simply out of control with crime/drugs and Queensryche points out that the Federal Government by comparison makes crime spending one of the last items on the priority list.

Queensryche favorites of mine, Walk in the Shadows, Take Hold the Flame in conjunction with Child of Fire ( I'll always believe the two were meant to be heard together) and Prophecy. The whole Operation Mind Crime album. Just putting it out there.
lex how lucky you are discovering all this greatness, I would love to be discovering all this again for the first time
Love you guys!!! This is a great album every song is unique just like you guys thanks for everything you do
Amazing. Back in 1986, my friend and I were listening to ZRock and we heard what we thought was new Iron Maiden. It was Queensrycke, releasing the previously unheard "Prophecy".
10 dead in Chinatown - could be the Wah Mee Massacre Seattle Chinatown but there were 13 killed in that robbery.
The "Steve Perry meets Bruce Dickinson" comparison, in my opinion is spot on!! Nice ear on her!!
I was a huge Queensryche fan back in the day . I saw them in Chicago during their Operation Mindcrime tour. Great show.
Queensryche original lineup is one the talented bands. Geoff Tate is one of the best vocalists ever. As he ages of course it shows, but nonetheless most talented. The oldest albums will give you chills and in amazement.
Top 10 of one of my favorite songs. Everything he is saying is true today. Damn!!! Shout out to the couch gang. Be well.
I was lucky enough to have seen them three times. Twice in Buffalo and once in Pittsburgh. They were amazing every time. Great band!!
How can you not smile when you see that cute little smile on her face😊
Lex is a total metal head !! The perfect song for both of u guys....
I saw these guys 20+yrs after their hayday and they were amazing. Love Geoff's voice
IMO "Is There Anybody Listening" is the best song on this album. Along with Silent Lucidity they are both masterpieces.
Yes!!!!!!!!!! I wore out 2 cassettes of this album, playing it so much.
So happy someone has done a reaction to this track. Love queensryche and this album.
Great band, great album! So happy to see you watch this. =)
I know exactly where i was when I listen to this song 👌 The images are so clear
Must go back further than 1990 with them to KNOW what they are capable of 😉 Live in Tokyo, "child of fire" is incredible.
Scott Rockinfield drumming was great whole Empire record. They were influnced by Rush and Pink Floyd.
Great song. Talks about street life. Shocking reality that a lot of people are blind to.
Her vocal assessment was spot on
Like; it might be an electric guitar, I don't know..."
------------------------------------
Great ear Lex!!
Bruce Dickinson and Steve Perry. Never would think about that but I kinda see that here. haha.
You said back with MORE Queensryche.... Did another one not upload yet?
SILENT LUCIDITY is a must for sure 👍
The entire Empire album is awesome
Take Hold Of The Flame live in Japan.....yall gotta watch the video. One of the best performances EVER!
EMPIRE was the follow up to the classic OPERATION MINDCRIME…EMPIRE was released August 1990!
Chris Degarmo was known for using a double neck guitar sometimes, so that almost acoustic sound, was either a electric guitar switching to a clean tone, or switching the tone and his hands over
On a double neck electric guitar.
Then there was the one neighborhood watch run by a granny in her late 70's that hired a mercenary to blow up crack houses and also quarantined a few blocks while the locals took baseball bats to the dealers.... but anywhooooo
So yeah this song is all about building a drug empire and a commentary about the politics of the era. If you don't know this band is about as political as RATM... I suggest highly listening to "Spreading the Disease" from Operation Mindcrime.
"Take Hold the Flame" live is a must. His vocal range is incredible.
The whole mindcrime album tells a complete story thru each of the songs I still get little details 30 years later and for me it's their best album #masterpiece
One of my favorite bands from the 80’s. Geoff Tate’s voice is phenomenal! One of the best.
When I first heard them, I thought they had two vocalists...what an incredible range.
I saw Geoff Tate and his band perform at Sellersville Theater. Great show!!
The acoustic with the drums is electric ⚡🤘
WHAT yall are doing queensryhce and u said back agian with holly shit where have i been . best shit ever
Also this song is from the album called Empire too, it's about Foreboding and Unstoppable Empire of drug trafficking within the USA and it's related crimes, That will inevitably lead to the breakdown of civility in American society!
This is one of those songs that you turn the volume up past 11 and sit next to the speakers! 🔥🔥🔥
I still to this day every few months put my headset on, turn the lights off and listen to the movie Operation Mindcrime play out in my head.
