A nice detail is that for most of the main stage-select bosses, they have the Repliforce logo, while the three who aren't working for Repliforce (spoilers) Cyber Peacock, Split Mushroom, and Magma Dragoon all have the Sigma logo instead.

I love it when X questions who Split Mushroom works for, he answers "Take a wild guess." And then his health bar with the Sigma logo shows up like he's flashing a fucking ID card.

I remember when I first played Zero's campaign on X4 my mind was blown when it revealed Zero was built by Wily. I didn't play X2 or 3 at the time so I had no idea this was a plot point but I always thought it was so cool how Wily's greatest creation ended up becoming best friends with Light's, but also was, in a way, the cause of a lot of the problems in the series, such as Sigma going Maverick and starting his revolution. I'm hoping that if there's ever an X9 we finally answer the question of what happened to the Classic Mega Man characters, even though I feel like it's a fair assumption Zero killed most of them
Luckily we don’t need to wait to X9 to get the answer, cause it has been proved that Zero didn’t kill the classic cast. What’s most likely will happen to classic MegaMan is that he gets scrapped. Disappointing I know.

Megaman 2 fot Gameboy and Megaman & Bass 2 for Wonderswan dont directly answer what happens BUT the plot of them leads to a good theory as to what happened:
A late boss in MM2 GB is Quint, who is Megaman from the future but reprogrammed by Wily. M&Bass villain isn't Wily but Megaman Shadow, a prototype of Quint. Can be theorized whenever Wily turns Megaman into Quint is when X stuff kicks off, cus Megaman is gone and his past self kills him. No more Megaman, Wilys all good. Light makes X and puts him away, Wily makes Zero and everything.

Keiji Inafune denied any relationship with Zero and Killing the Mega Man Cast, though Wily did intend him too.
Either Mega Man got rebuilt as X or he's laying around in storage somewhere. There's no way they'd kill him off.
Great review. I am however with the majority that prefer to play as X, but Zero's inclusion was definitely a welcome one. It makes it feel like two games for the price of one.
Just a little fun fact I noticed only after playing the legacy collection: Zero stops doing the over the shoulder thumbs up victory pose after Iris's death and never does it again for the subsequent games. You're welcome to pick up your jaw off the floor :)
No, he stops doing it in X6 after dying for the second time in X5. X5 uses the same sprites for Zero as X4, save for ones made for crouching and the rope mechanic. X6 gave him new sprites
Is it weird that I enjoyed Zero's campaign more than X's? This game still holds a special place in my heart and truly got me into the X series from this point on
Nah dawg. I first played Zero's campaign, boy was that hard and a challenge. I went ahead and then did X, it was way too easy (and boring). Maybe it all comes down to which you played first.
Pretty good video to be honest. There's a couple of things to add to this... Look at Zero's design in the flashback and compare it to X1s. Now compare it to X2 and the fact that Zero begins having a saber after Sigma used it first in X1. I love this game and I think it is either tied or just below X1 for best in the series. Makes X2 a lot better retroactively if we take narrative into account. Also makes Megaman 8 have a lot of sense with the "virus from outer space". Guess it all comes down to the Megaman crew trying to tie everything up with Zero and how even Inafune wanted the X series to be a Zero series from the start. Not to mention the Power Fighters' ending showing Zero and Willy. I'll watch your other videos, earned a sub. Btw, I can't believe more people play with X rather than Zero in X4... I almost exclusively play as Zero since I'm 7.
Yeah Zero has a Learning AI in a special device called the Z-Brain. It's how he gains power. He doesn't have the absorption ability of Mega Man/Bass/X but instead has unlimited potential through his ability to analyze and adapt techniques to his own style. They almost never talk about it in the games but it's in guide books and such.
I actually really like the fact that it's super understated in the games because it makes certain elements of the Zero series really fun to analyze. In Zero 3 he has to fight his original body in a much weaker clone body, but he still manages to win and the game doesn't explain why. Most people I've talked to think it's just the hero trope of he has a reason to fight or whatever but it's actually because he's spent the entire Zero series thus far fighting Copy X and the 4 Guardians for well over a year at this point. Zero gets new EX Skills in Zero 2 and Zero 3 meanwhile Omega is stuck using abilities from X4 and X5, moves that Zero has already learned and analyzed back when he was in that body. He may have less power but he's grown so much through his learning that he's able to win.
The games never state that the copy body is any weaker than Omega. It's only Weil who disses on it, telling Zero it's a "cheap fake" because Weil is an asshole
The copy body wasnt weaker, it was a perfect copy. Omega was more powerful than Zero because of the dark elf and enhancements he git from Weil.
Does anyone ever notice that Dragoon is the only enemy in which nor Zero or X perform their victory pose? they still have a little respect for their ex-comrad... even if he's now a Maverick...
Actually, fun fact, the Japanese version of this game and I think the other 2 ps1 games have bosses voice a battle line before the battle begins, like in the Zero series
I heard talk that back in the older MMX Collection for the PS2 and Gamecube there was plans to redub the cutscenes in X4 and X6 using the X8 voice cast. To hear Mark Gatha and Lucas Gilbertson as X and Zero in those games would have been nothing short of incredible.

I would say to just play X4 in Japanese via the X collection for good voice acting, but it should be stated that there is no option for English subtitles. So play it in Japanese on a second playthrough so that you already know whats going on.

I'm not gonna lie, my eyes always glaze over as somebody who hasn't played the X games when I hear how much plot is thrown at the player. That said, it's a shame that X4 gets slammed for the voice acting, you did a really solid job laying it all out and pulling the narrative out on this one!
I honestly don't think the voice acting is THAT bad, X's voice is too high, and Zero's infamous line is cheesy fun. Dr. Light in MM8 is the worst of the worst. He's so bad he's hilarious.

Mega Man X4 will always hold a special place in my heart. Being a huge MMX fan, I remember seeing this advertised in a magazine at a grocery store. I was so hyped because the bosses looked amazing and I couldn’t wait to play it. Back in the Blockbuster days where renting PlayStation consoles was still a thing. I rented a PS1 and Mega Man X4. It was the first game I had ever played on the system. That opening title sequence blew my mind and I was hooked! It’s an experience I’ll never forget.
I’ve always interpreted the “oil” in the x4 cutscenes as some some form of synthetic blood. Maybe it’s a bit edgy but to me It further solidifies how close reploids are to humans.

You did bring up a good question when talking about why Colonel showed some respect to Zero. I think Zero being a legend amongst Reploids would explain why he is X’s role model

X4 is definitely one of my favorites... I remember the first time i saw "That Cutscene"...i was so pissed and that just made killing the bastard responsible (Sigma) all the more satisfying at the end of it.
If there was a game more deserving of a fine tuning to perfection status...it's this one.

If I had to take a guess as to why they gave a robot a love interest, it's likely because they wanted the characters to still seem human, robot or not. Do consider that Mega Man was one of the first robots to truly have actual free will, and his creator, Dr Light, would later go on to make X, a more advanced version of the original Mega Man; after X was discovered in the future by Dr Kain, he created the reploid race based on X's schematics. That being said, and by making the characters more like people, it makes it easier for the audience to become invested in them, and seeing them have their own hopes, dreams and aspirations is something that serves to make them more relatable
So I'm finding this video now and let me give you the reveal that the voice actress for X and Megaman. She did all of the voice acting for both games in one session AND didn't knew it was for two different characters. She didn't knew about X4 until much later. I think it's safe to assume that all the other voice actors did the same since they share the same cast
Yeah I recently saw that interveiw too. Terrible managing on Capcom's part. Knowing that, I think she did as good of a job as she could've.
@@ThatTravGuy I agree, but even having said that, her voice acting isn't fitting for X's character. Just goes to show that the game is something of a product of it's time, for better or for worse.

When the Legacy Collections released. I decided out of curiosty to play Japanese X4, wish we had ability to had them in english with original voices (subtitles in moveis and yes i know we have mods right now) but overall it was such a better experience it's not even funny.
Mega Man X is what got me interested in the series, but Mega Man X4 is what made me a fan. Zero is the main reason why I'm such a huge fan of the Mega Man X series, and I always thought that platforming combined with hack-and-slash combat was the coolest video game genre combination I've ever seen. :)

There's also something of a cringy pun in Zero's name when you consider the lore. Mavericks in the X series and after are generally described as malfunctioning or etc. as a result of a virus infecting them. With this Maverick Virus having been established, when you think about it, that makes Zero... Patient Zero of the virus.
This is all the more tragic when you consider the Zero series, and especially it's ending in Zero 4, which I won't spoil here.

X4 hits differently when you become invested in the overall Megaman timeline. X4 tells one of the most pivotal moments in the entire story: Sigma and Zero’s first battle. Zero’s disturbing, maniacal lust for violence is unnerving in all the best ways. Furthermore, Sigma is supposed to be a Maverick Hunter protecting humans, but you can get a hint of where his loyalties really lie when he refers to other Reploids, probably specifically the Hunters, as his “people”. Zero’s cutscenes in X4 drive so much speculation and intrigue over Zero’s origin story, which is still purposely told very vaguely but doesn’t have to try at all to emphasize just how critical it is in this world.
In the X, Zero, and ZX series, you’ll notice that the protagonists and NPCs have a very poor knowledge of their own history, and this effectively allows Mavericks to persist across all eras. Characters in X don’t know anything about X’s origin, much less anything about the Wily Wars. Characters in Zero don’t know about the Elf Wars. Characters in ZX don’t know anything about Zero, the Resistance, and Neo Arcadia. Zero is referred to as just some vague hero of legend. An underlying theme in Megaman’s timeline is how the constant erasure of history due to endless wars eventually doomed the world. Reading between the lines across the various series, you’ll notice curious details, such as Dr. Light’s old lab where X was discovered being designated as a forbidden zone and sealed off, therefore no one knows or can even learn about the history of Light and Wily. No one knows much about the origins of the Maverick Virus. No one bothered to take a better look at X, who was the only Reploid ever truly immune to the Maverick Virus. Zero was studied to create the Mother Elf, but her ability to completely overwrite Reploids remotely on a mass scale also effectively robbed all Reploids of any possibility of ever becoming truly independent thinkers, something Weil would use to his advantage. Yet again, not knowing about Wily, the humans of that time decided to give Weil immortality and banishment, not even considering that Weil would just never change. Had the characters of this world studied the origins of the virus and X more closely, perhaps they would be better equipped to take on the threat Wily posed much more readily. Maybe Legends wouldn’t have ever had to take place.

X4 is the most eyecandy of the franchise, i love the sprites and backgrounds. And the 80s vibe music i love it.
My least favorite thing about X4 is how short the castle stages are.

-Half a stage with a boss

-Half a stage with two bosses

-Boss rush and the final boss
That’s pretty short if you ask me.
For me, it's Double. He's easily the weakest character in the game from a writing perspective: he's supposed to come across as a bumbling, charming oaf, but he doesn't get enough interactions with X before his true identity is revealed for his betrayal to really leave much of an impact. There's also the fact that once you're aware of this plot point, his name completely gives his true nature away, and it's not even subtle about it. At least with Iris, she was at least given an actual relationship with Zero, and no, I'm not talking just about her romantic feelings towards him, but the fact that she's confirmed to have known Zero from sometime before the events of X4, and clearly is not okay with Zero fighting her brother and his army, so when she ultimately dies, we actually have a reason to care about what it's putting Zero through. Double, on the other hand, unfortunately doesn't get the same kind of characterization, which makes it much easier to write him off by comparison; it shows that X is naive still and far too trusting as a result, but doesn't really go any deeper than that, nor does it do a good job at it since it's a lot more easy to be made to not care about him as opposed to Iris, of whom serves the same role for Zero during his campaign
@@matthewkuscienko4616 i disagree, both Double and Iris get the same level of importance in either Zero or X campaign, you just happen to have a bias towards Iris, we are told about her relationship with Zero the same way we are told about Double being a rookie hunter, the game really drops the ball in both storytelling and characterization. No character is given development.

X4 is absolutely my favorite and personally, the best in this series imo. Compared to its successor, this game really sticks to the basic but the quality of the game is just so damn good. It's simple but the design of the game in total is really really good. Also the music is top notch, one of my favorite aspect of this game.
Hey! Double's voice in the fight with X is my favorite one from the game, they're so memorable and fun to say. Especially when he throws those huge slashes you have to dodge.
1 minute in and I sir am offended that you called X2 a drop in quality. X3 sure, but X2 was easily the best of the Super Trilogy.

They're definitely underrated games, and ones that don't recieve as much praise as X1 and X4. With X1, it's highly praised for being the introduction to the new storyline of the Mega Man franchise, while X4 is praised for it's storytelling and supposedly "perfecting the formula", which feels weird to say, honestly. With X2 and X3, I think that because they don't do as good in these categories, it makes it easier to pick at their flaws and finding things for people to gripe about despite them still being solid games in their own rights that move the story along in their own ways.

Ah, it's even worse when you investigate and realize that that purple orb is what remains of Colonel.
Iris and Colonel were part of a project to make the perfect battle Maverick but their characteristics clashed, so, to allow them to exist, they were separated in brother and sister, however, when Iris gets the ride armor, the violent warrior programing of Colonel clashes with the strategic and sweet of Iris, making her shut down for good.
More salt to the wound: we all know that the chips of the bosses can be trasplanted to another body, but Iris was so blind by her grief that she didn't requested Zero anoher body for his brother or some help, she faced him and doomed both she and her brother to the fault in program that killed them...
When Zero is fighting Sigma/goes "Maverick", I refer to him as "DWN-∞".

I remember when I was a lot younger, I was at a local game shop when a mother and her small child were looking at some games. The child was wanting to get this game, but the mother was looking at the rating and noticed that the box warns of blood being in this game, so she was hesitant on getting it. I told here I beat this game a few times and there was no blood anywhere in the game. Of course, that was because I forgot that the cutscenes had blood, not the actual game itself, but she did buy the game and I'm sure they found out about the blood sooner or later...
X4's cover looks more like Zero aggressively consoling X

Honestly its really hard for me in that “what am i fighting for” cutscene especially as i played and loved to death mega man zero with in the forth game, zero sacrifices himself to save the resistance while explaining that he fights for his friends and his power is to protect the ones he believes he must.
Iris was introduced in Xtreme2, and was established before X4, which is why everyone implies her and zero know one another.

I recently played a patched version of X4 that replaces all voice acting with the original japanese acting (with english subtitles) and I gotta say, those cutscenes hit different in the best possible ways
I personally love this game for so many different reasons. Granted, I started this game having the ultimate armor cheat already accessible, but it's still blew me away as far as any game goes. And it is because of the story of this game that I have been obsessed with creating a Mega Man X movie since then.

Frost tower is very useful of magamar dragoons stage. It freezes EVERYTHING in that level and acts as a shield to those massive robots that shoot missiles as long as u stand behind it and shoot them from behind it. I always use it on that stage

I love how Trav describes this as one of the easiest, but I always found it to be one of the hardest. Granted, it was the last of the Playstation 1 trilogy I played and have only beaten it once as each hunter.

I had always heard how bad the voice acting and the plot was in X4 but after I heard that Lucas Gilbertson dubbed version and the Japanese one I honestly got very teary eyed so I decided to get the legacy collection to try it myself and in terms of the plot and the gameplay it's my favorite in the series and holds a special space in my heart for getting me in to the X series. So as someone who just recently got in to the series and just started watching you thanks to a friend's recommendation thank you for the great content and for this video giving the game it's fair shake
X4 was the first game I ever bought on my ps1 back in the day with Marvel Vs Capcom 1 and Megaman 8. This game will always have a warm place in my heart (bad voice acting aside lol)

25:22 I don't know if I can blame it on my previous experience with Street Fighter, but I had a blast learning how to control Zero when I first got my hands on X4! In fact, I beat the game with Zero before I beat the game with X! For the longest time as a kid, I thought the final boss was harder as X than it was as Zero!

I can't decide which is my favorite in the X series, the original or X4. None of the other titles really come close IMHO. Both have a great amount of attention to detail, memorable music, excellent boss designs, plenty of variety in the stages. The animated cutscenes in X4 were fantastic at the time which made their absence in X5 a huge step back presentation-wise.

Megaman X3 did have you play as zero briefly in the intro stage, but, you could also switch to zero throughout the rest of the game actually. You just go to the weapon menu and hit R and you can change to him. I actually didn't know this as a kid and I never played as zero again after the intro stage. Fun facts

This was the game that got me into mega man series and is still my fave outta every mega man game ever love this game to death
You've probs already been told this, but one of the stage uses of frost tower in X's story is in magma dragoon's stage. It can be used to make a safe barrier on edges where magma rocks fly up and down the shafts making it MUCH safer to jump across and also it can be used to ignore most of the non-enemy stage hazards within it in general. Think of it more as a Stage Hazard barrier then an attack, thats how I always treated it. Its also decent for lingering damage against spawning enemies, such as the mermen in the first half of web spidus' stage or the drones in the miniboss of storm owl's stage. *insert rainbow here* The more you know~ Not gonna lie, it wasn't until AFTER I started taking a look at no damage runs did I ever consider using frost tower in these ways, I think it was intended to be used this way but it wasn't really... conveyed well considering all the others besides soul body was offensive in nature, and soul body was obvious to be gimmicky and rarely used.
...I also preferred to Play as Zero more then X, I preferred the strategic play and special move system more with him.
I know I’m three years late, and nobody is going to see this, but I thought I’d put this out there about the intro boss. Egregious: Outstandingly bad, Shocking.
Like the whole Sky Lagoon incident and subsequent civil war. Going by that logic, Eregion name is probably a pun of that and ‘Legion’ or something similar. A legion of horrific deaths. I feel like if that’s the case, it’s outstandingly clever.
One thing that did Mega Man X4 dirty is the localization. I am talking about terrible translation and terrible voice acting. Whoever was responsible for translation and voice acting, they have clearly failed at doing their job. Okay, maybe it's not 0/10 bad but you get what I am talking about. Luckily there is a community project that gave an option of Japanese VA and gave the game the proper translation that it deserves.
Overall, Mega Man X4 is a great title, and unfortunately the last great title. It's all downhill after X4. No seriously, what the heck was going on inside Capcom after X4? What were they thinking?
Ik it doesn't actually count because x4 came first, but in xtream 2 it's a lil bit more cleared up with the zero & iris & colonel relationship. I mean not really but it showed they had some connections
The Plasma Shot is great for normal enemies and mini-bosses, but it's not so good for normal bosses, especially if you're speedrunning, 'cause the charge shot (regardless of what buster you have) does 3 damage, but the plasma balls left behind will hit a boss as soon as the I -frames run out, and it only does 1 damage.
The Stock Shot takes some getting used to, but most speedrunners take it because it lets them hit the boss with another fully charged shot as soon as the I-frames run out, and as I said, that's 3 damage per shot, which saves a nice chunk of time.
I think that the Stock Shot is underrated; most people I have seen online prefer the Plasma Shot, but I also haven't seen much speedrunning content, either. I think that most people like the power of the Plasma Shot more, and blindly say it's better without taking into account the applications that the Stock Shot has that you pointed out. At any rate, it's interesting to see that they both have their uses, rather than one being overall superior to the other as most non-speedrunners claim the Plasma Shot to be
@@matthewkuscienko4616 Honestly, I personally preferred the Stock Shot even before I watched speedruns.
@@jruler93 That's interesting. It's cool to see someone with a different perspective; I think it makes it interesting to see someone sing the praises of the Stock Shot, so to speak. Most of the more casual crowd tends to prefer the Plasma Shot, so I find it intriguing to see an argument for the Stock Shot being an actual legitimate choice
@@matthewkuscienko4616 I mean... I see why some would think the Plasma Shot would be powerful, considering how the plasma ball just shreds most mid-bosses. But as far as the stage bosses go, you'd do just as well pelting them with half-charges.

I believe, not know, that the final weapon was likely something the Repliforce already had. Which is probably a nasty bit of hindsight to whoever decided they should have it.
