    You ever think about how Metroid Prime blew us all away back in the day? Metroid Prime, The second of TWO Metroid games to release on the exact same day alongside Metroid Fusion, but instead of a 2D Platformer, it tried something unprecedented... a First Person Shooter- or, Adventure, as Retro & Nintendo both insist. This choice wasn't handled well before release, but I think we all know how that turned out. Join me as I take you through one of my favorite games of all time!

    The scan visor telling you how a space pirate met its end is an example of something they didn't need to do but is such a perfect touch. Flavor text and lore/world building of this caliber is most fans wet dream to be wholly immersed into the world and understanding the setting and the rules of its universe. Id love to see more games (especially horror) make a return to adding these little details that go a long way to bridging the gap between the medium and the player

    I was one of the naysayers who was disappointed when it was revealed that it was going to be a first person game. Then it came out and got amazing reviews and it became one of my favorite games of all time. One of the rare stories in video game stories where criticism turned into an amazing game instead of a hyped game ending up mediocre.
    I also like the original controls. Is it good for an FPS? No, but it's perfect for Metroid.

Basically, people were unhappy that nintendo was turning metroid into call of duty.

    Maybe it's because like you mentioned in the video, I too spent years getting used to the 'Cube's tank controls, but I genuinely prefer them to the Wii trilogy version. Whenever I get the itch to revisit Primes 1 and 2 (they're among my absolute favourite games), I always go back to the original versions.
    Also, I agree on the flavour text in the scan logs. They add SO MUCH to the atmosphere. I love how much of a badass you feel when you're scanning a console in one of the labs and it essentially reads: "terrible news everyone, the Hunter has arrived on Tallon IV".

  • @ExtremeAce

    Man I adore the Prime Trilogy. Even if Prime 2 is my favorite game of all time, this game has a special place in my heart. The first time I booted it up and listening to the title theme I got chills...just sat down and listened to it for a good 5-10 minutes. And then they hit me with the menu theme! Another 5 minutes just listening to that lol. Even though it's been a while and through replays I see some issues with the game I still love it and it's easily one of my favorite games of all time.

  • @kingbash6466

    Prime has one of my favorite atmospheres in any video game. If it's not because of the aesthetic and music, it's because of the scan visor that helps bring the planet of Tallon IV to life with next to no spoken dialogue.

    4:12 Honestly, I always felt the original Metroid Prime was the only game that felt right on that controller. Like the game's controls were built around the GameCube controller, and not squeezed into it, like most other games felt. It's still much better when you can use the right control stick to move the camera (with mouselook, etc via emulation), but the original controls still worked great at the time.

    • @kippgames
      @kippgames Рік тому +1

      Honestly I agree up until mouse look and right stick control. Trilogy while better accurate was clunky just like the original and it was perfect but something so smooth like mouselook kinda killed the vibe I had from the game and didn’t think it suited metroid, I don’t mind people using it and enjoying it but as someone who loves the orginal and plays a lot of shooters it just doesn’t feel right to me

    • @shsrpr
      @shsrpr Рік тому

      @@kippgames I'm not entirely sure what you're trying to say. You don't think it plays well with a standard controller using the right stick to aim? You'd rather be stuck standing still in order to move the camera around and aim like it was on GameCube? Or you'll only play the Trilogy version using the Wiimote as was intended?
      I personally thought it was excellent on the GameCube in its time. And I enjoyed being able to use the Wiimote in the Trilogy version, but I still preferred the original control scheme over it. But now I definitely prefer it on a standard controller (PS5 controller is what I use) and being able to move around freely while aiming (still use Lock-on though). I customized the controls to my liking in the Primehack/Dolphin emulator, and ended up playing through Prime 1 & 2 three times each (once on each difficulty level) and I loved it.

    • @kippgames
      @kippgames Рік тому

      @@shsrpr sorry I worded that poorly, I don’t like many of the modern control schemes and prefer both the Wii and GameCube controls. I think retro really took into account the controls and gameplay together and that’s why I feel the original control schemes for both the Wii and GameCube (including the changes u can do in-game for each version).
      I think it plays well with modern control schemes but to me, it kills the pace and design of the original versions (GameCube and Wii) but I respect those who prefer to play on it because at the end of the day it’s still a stellar designed game regardless of how people play it and that’s what matters most

    Judging from scans of Ridley in this game, his brain, spinal chord, and anything that isn't made of metal and technology are what are intact of Ridley from Samus' encounter with him on Zebes. So, it's safe to say that this is still the same Space Pirate, a good amount of him is still intact, he absolutely remembers Samus, and he's fucking pissed.

It wasn't that hard to pick that it lists an element 9/10 times in the hints, and that it says what room they are in. Yeah, I get it, if you're super casual about playing, it doesn't occur that you can just scan and look at the full map to see what room it says in the hint, but c'mon! Wait, progression vs lore scans are red vs orange? I was too colorblind to tell all this time! (We see this later with red vs orange color-coded enemies, an absolute nightmare for colorblind players. Ditto blue vs purple)
    Man the scan system is just so good. Every game with an interact button needs it. Maybe give different text when scanning from afar vs interacting up close.

    Also can't wait for you got eventually do my all time favorite Metroid game, in Prime 2! Although, I would argue the Trilogy is the definitive version.
    Also, surprised you didn't touch on the only sequence break in the game, only available on the NTSC version of Prime, with the Space Jump Boots. Still, love your videos!

    It's a bit difficult to see but at some point in the Phendrana Pirate base you can actually see a wooden table with a fish on it, implying the pirates have been FISHIN'. The same fish model can be seen frozen in the deeper areas of Phrendrana. I think its the only time we see something like that in game.

    Great video as per usual - the humour and editing gags are on point, rapid-fire without feeling overbearing. I personally could never really get into Metroid Prime - I recognize it as being a great transition to 3D for the series that keeps the spirit alive and intact, but I just kinda... drop off somewhere around the late mid-game? Never finished any of my many attempts to get through the game, but I did like the parts I did play.
    Some feedback on splitting the review into two parts: I don't mind the fact that the review was split - you know your own workflow the best, and I'm totally down to watch the second part when it comes out. I was not a fan of the way it was done here, however - going "To Be Continued" out of nowhere smack-dab in the middle of Phendrana. I think putting (Part 1 of 2) in the video title and/or giving a quick mention at the beginning that this is a two-parter would help against this feeling of getting the rug pulled out from under me at the end of the video.
    Anyways, aside from those minor criticisms, I loved it. Keep doing your thing, dude.

    Dude, it's pretty cool how you grew up with shit like Super Metroid and Doom. I grew up playing Super Metroid and I'm almost 40, so I do find it interesting how deep your knowledge is with the classics. I wonder if it was just through emulation or maybe a family member had all the consoles? And then what peaked your interest? Ah, maybe best to leave it a secret for the world but I think it's cool regardless. Your vids always kicks ass and the length is great since it's like a goddamn feature film experience. The effort is most appreciated!
