Really? I've beaten the game multiple times and I still think the first two areas are the best parts of the game. Everything after that feels like kind of a slog to me.
This game might be minimal in it’s soundtrack, but “Surface of SR388” is a fucking bop.

Mine too, they had it in the 3ds remake but I ended up clearing the area it was playing in before the track got halfway. It was as if the game was ashamed of it and was swiftly buried in boring ambient noise.

I played this as a child and didn't even understand who Samus was or what I was tracking down at the time but the game was awesome nevertheless. Compared to a lot of other Gameboy games this one was top tier and still is.
One of the most ambitious made. And it has the tie in with the Super Game Boy adaptor on your TV. I loved this game growing up

I had gone out of this video a while back to have it on in the background while I texted someone. I came back and, when he said “interesting that the older you get, the more susceptible you are to being blown up” it was still showing a picture of Gunpei Yokoi from earlier in the video and I had to do a double take.
A UA-cam buffering error just made one of the darkest jokes I’ve ever seen in my life.

I always loved Metroid II. Maybe it's rose-tinted glasses, but I always felt like it used its limitations in a deliberate way. Like, the small screen and the large Samus sprite because the caverns are dark and she can't see very far, the linearity of the game because she's systematically hunting a species rather than exploring with an eventual goal to reach, and the weird beepy unsettling ambience rather than adventurous music because it's a fairly dark did-what-she-had-to-do extermination mission rather than a heroic "defeat the bad guy" type affair. It feels like the entire story was a product of its limitations, and if they'd produced this game on a console without them I feel like they would have had a completely different plot and mission.
Also, neat bit of trivia, this game uses the same engine as Mario Land 2 and Wario Land, and the Metroids use the same squeal sound effect as bosses from Wario Land.
I’m one of those weirdos that like Metroid 2’s beep and boop soundtrack. Irma pretty cool especially when you notice that in the Omega nest, you can hear them stomping around in the background. It’s open to interpretation and that’s what I like about it the most.
Great video, btw! Really enjoyed it. Metroid 2 may not be my favorite in the series, but I have a soft spot for it as it is my first Metroid game. Is it a black sheep, though? I don’t think so. I would say it’s more underrated than anything. Save the black sheep title for Other M.
In 1992, I was 11 years old and I had just gotten this game and the Light Boy for my birthday. It took 8 AA batteries to power my experience of playing this game, alone in an unlit gymnasium after a church session. I was lying on the huge crash mat they would move onto the stage to make room for service. There, in a tiny font of light, little me was enjoying 100% immersion as I fell deeper and deeper into the cave system. I found the room with the third, terrifying Metroid mutation. Shock. Fear. Love.
The ambience in Metroid 2 is great imo.
This games has some of the best, most courageous experimental music in any game.
This game requires a patience younger generations are conditioned not to have. Being able to just go online for a guide, or to switch to another game, takes something away from the game, and from people. Extremely brilliant game. Excellent atmosphere, suspenseful pacing.
When you say u are 'lost' in a game, there are at least three meanings. One to do with losing your way, another to do with immersiveness, and a third that Mertriod 2 achieves, that combines first two with a genuine feeling of despair and dread.
Only Diablo 1 and 2 come close.
This is a game that doesn't translate well outside its time, but is still good enough to be timeless--like Terminator 2 or Star Wars, ppl can appreciate these as good movies, but to be there in the 80s and 90s, when these first came out, and there was nothing else like them, the experience was different.
In the dark. Gameboy screen as the only light. The eerie music and dark backgrounds. Descending lower and lower into increasingly freakish landscapes. No possibility of maps or online guides. A different experience.
This was the first Metroid game I played as a kid, and what got me into the series. Even if it's outdated by today's standards, It still one of my favorites and I think where others get lost easy in it, I never had that problem. And I love the music, even if that's just based on nostalgia.

I would love a video on the Metroid 2 remake AM2R, it is definitely the best way to play this game today. About as good what Zero Mission did for Metroid 1.

Aw man, no love for Samus Returns? I played both and they’re both great games with different experiences to offer.
AM2R is a good effort, but does not capture the atmosphere of the original. An actual GameBoy and headphones is still the best way to play this game today.
@ I agree. The remakes are good games but not great remakes (though AM2R did a pretty good job). You can't beat the atmosphere and environmental storytelling of the original.
I’ve always loved the Metroid games, even if I’ve only ever finished 2. I always get distracted. I’ve been trying to beat Metroid Prime and Fusion for as long as I can remember.
I can understand the Prime games. They have a horrible habit of making you do one last mandatory collectathon before the final boss. I was replaying Prime 2 last year and just sort of quit when I got to that point lol. But, if you trudge through it, the final fight is pretty good. Tough too.
@@Ckoz2829 had all three Primes on my to-do list, ended up giving up after finishing the first. It’s a really good game, but the collectathon reeeeally made me not want to play anymore.
@@machineaphex I'm trying to understand why colectathons in Metroid games are turning people off. Isn't looking for hidden objects the main draw of the franchise? I could understand if you had the navigation thing enabled, but it was the first thing I turned off when I picked up Prime.
@@CoralCopperHead oh no no, what actually made me tired of the game was the fact that after you’ve already explored everything and picked up pretty much all the interesting secrets, the game throws you for a loop making you travel through literally each and every room in the game (if you don’t use a walkthrough) in search for the things that open the last door. I’m all for exploring and looking for secrets, but when the game just forces you to backtrack just for the sake of extending playtime, it bothers me a lot.

Nice to see some love for Metroid II.
For the hardware available at the time, they made a brilliant game with some fantastic music tracks. The title screen is beautiful and the ending theme is easily one of my favorite tracks from the whole series.
I first played Metroid II on my 3ds 10 years ago, where I spent a lot of time commuting on trains in college, it felt like I was playing how it was intended. I had a great time with it even if it was obtuse. I actually kept a small printed map closed between the screens to keep track of things.

I actually like this game better than Samus Returns. I just think the simplicity and quiet claustrophobia induced by the tech fit the experience better than Samus Returns' loud and obnoxious feel and.... absolutely horrendous controls and counter mechanic.
AM2R is some gooooooooooooood stuff though. What it lacks in simplicity and subtle dread it makes up for in gameplay design and a beautifully bittersweet tranquility for large swathes of the game. It's not perfect but I like it as a compliment to this game.
Also I've heard basically everyone complain about the space jump in this game and it's just.... not a problem? Like I've never had an issue with it. Never had a problem doing it, never had a problem with Samus uncurling. Yeah I've dropped it before and fell upon missing the rhythm. But very rarely and I get the hang of it almost immediately.
I played this game through multiple times without a map before I was even 6. SR388 Surface theme gives me great memories of sitting in my families Van on a trip playing my OG black n white game boy and 75% of the time I was playing Return of Samus.... playing this that young definitely molded the type of gamer I am.
I remember the atmosphere making me uneasy here and there!
This game was the first game I played on the Game Boy and it really holds a special place in my gaming life! It's not perfect but it was great and definitely the game that made me a fan of the entire series!!
Fun fact, while AM2R is what drove me into playing the Metroid Games, I far prefer the official Nintendo remake, Samus Returns. Maybe I should play the OG so I can say I played them all
That's surprising since from what I've seen, a lot of people online seem to prefer AM2R over Samus Returns.
I wasn't able to click with the Metroid series until I played Samus Returns, so it's nice to see more people who appreciate it.
From what I understand, AM2R tried to stick close to what Metroid 2 did, from ambiance to theme, while Samus Returns tried to be more like a return to the series since it was the first Metroid in a long time.
So yeah, of course they added a few fan-service elements, but I would say it helped make things more fun in the end
I prefer AM2R so much that I'm pretty sure it's my favorite Metroid game period. Either it or Fusion. But Samus Returns was a lot of fun too.

First game i beated on Gameboy. Didn't know Samus is a she until i saw it on the credits. What a cool game it is. Played it on the schoolbus for months.
I get why they couldn't do it from a gameplay standpoint, but in terms of the story, it makes no sense that Samus would go on a mission to wipe out the Metroids and not bring the ice beam from the start.

Pro tip. For the space jump, jump just when you start to fall. It also makes a sound. At the third whir after the main sound, you can use that as an audio cue to jump again, but only if you jump all the way.
With that in mind, you can pull it off blindfolded. Literally.
12:01 I have a theory that samus' suit wasn't upgraded to have physics in this timeline which is what I've always thought when I played this part in metroid 2.
I was playing this game for the first time to get a feel for it to see if I want to pick up the Remake, and I got stuck in the same area you mentioned at 14:44. The game did convince me to pick up the remake later this year though.
I played this a year or two ago and did it all without a guide but for one instance: the part where you have to go into the lava or acid and take damage. I had no idea the game wanted me to traverse under it. Other than that, the game clicked for me and I finished it in two play sessions.
This was my second Metroid game, after Super, and I adored it. Weird ambient background "music" and all. And yes, this game has more energy tanks than you can hold. Metroid 1 did as well. In the first game you could even intentionally wait to collect one of the extra tanks for before Tourian to cut down on energy grinding
There’s a similar easter egg in Samus Returns where if you wait on the title screen, it will play the original title theme. It’s great.

its kinda funny seeing how the one game that you'd think would've been forgotten due to its limitations is (in some ways) as loved as all the others. old school jank aside, i definitely feel this ones up there with Super Metroid. i can only imagine how different the franchise could've been had they made 2 on the Snes instead.
AM2R is probably still one of my favorite games, and the devs did an absolutely stellar job with it - especially the soundtrack.
i found a cool glitch that basicaly gives you a double jump whenever you take damage and have invincibility frames. i always tried to use that instead of the space jump if i could
8:16 or you can time your jump, get hurt by the block when it reappears and get knocked upwards like I did

or you can place bomb jump and place a bomb mid air. Then get out of ball, jump up and bomb boost up. The timing is fairly easy.

I bought this game on the 3ds eshop when it released in November 2011. This game I found to be very tough and almost a "guide game" meaning it's almost near to impossible to complete the og 1991 version without a guide. Like you, I had the same problems with it. and yeah idk if it's a generational thing where I'm so used to modern games that I can't go back to games released in the 80's/early 90's

Great review, I remember enjoying the game myself. I also thought Nintendo's remake was pretty good too. I hope you'll do reviews for the Metroid Prime games too. They were my introduction to the Metroid franchise.

For people emulating this, use retroarch and one of the gameboy cores. Go into the core's options and change the system colour palette. It would be gameboy, gameboy color or superboy. Personally, I would recommend the gameboy color palette

As an adult ive tried to get into it but with no map its brutal dang how i ever beat this game as a kid baffles me lol
Just beat this game and it’s easily one of my favorites in the series. This game plays much more like Super Metroid than the Original. It’s brutal but fair, but with only two buttons it’s amazing it even exists.
I do however think keeping a map nearby is essential, unless you got a lot of time on your hands.

metroid 1 actually has 2 more e tanks than you can actually use. i think they're meant to act as one use recharge points, or for if you missed one of the other ones.
I have always loved this one. I technically started with this one. I have beaten it more times than I can count.
Only the shell of the Arachnus is invulnarable. Problem is, it curls up every time you fire.

I just played the 2d metroid games for the first time last year all in order, and funny enough this is the one I enjoyed the most. I absolutely despised playing the first one and I refuse to ever play that game again. This one though is the one I have replayed the most, there is something in its simplicity I just love compared to the rest. The series isnt something I put up there with my favorites, its just a fun series that stays consistent with what I expect out of them. I dont really get why prime is held as high as it is, I enjoyed it but I still see this game as primarily a 2d game series. The game I like the second most is Super Metroid.

I mean, maybe in Fusion she and Adam figured out that getting rid of the Metroids wasn't the greatest idea, but that wasn't a realization that hit in Metroid 2.
I think there's a difference between going back and playing this after playing modern games and playing this for the first time when Metroid 1 was the only other game in the series. I remember thinking it was such an upgrade in almost every way. The bigger sprites, the easier to navigate world, the much better controls... the only downgrade is the colors and the music. I loved this game when it was new. It was an exciting sequel and never felt like a handheld downgrade at all. I never could have navigated the original game without a map due to how many completely identical areas the game reuses, but I never needed a map for this one. The map is much better designed. This game honestly had so many great ideas that later games would take from.

You don't need a 3DS capture card. Just need a PC that can emulate 3DS. And emulating it will look a million times better than capturing a real 3DS. with upscaling. I'm playing the remake on the emulator right now. The Citra emulator emulates this game perfectly too
