Royal Thai Air Force's "Ferocious Sharks of the Andaman" arrive for Pitch Black 24

- Royal Thai Air Force 701st Fighter Squadron nicknamed the "Ferocious Sharks of the Andaman" have arrived in Darwin before flying for Exercise Pitch Black gets underway on the 15th of July (2024).
Arriving with 5x SAAB JAS-39C/D Gripen fighter jets, they were supported by RTAF C-130H Hercules aircraft fulfilling the logistical support role. The 701st FS are apart of the 7th Wing based at Surat Thani Air Base on the East Coast of Thailand and have supported past iterations of the exercise with the JAS-39 on three separate occasions.
Their nickname can be seen on the vertical stabiliser (fin) with their mascot painted on each Gripen.

Gripen is a very capable fighter, agile, fast and very good avionics, data links, radar and EWF systems. NATO compliant , fires the Meteor Air to Air Missile, one of the best BVR weapons.

Didn’t know Thailand is already operating the Gripen. Awesome Jet
Yeah we've had them since 2016. 12 Gripen C/Ds One was lost in an accident so 11 remain. The RTAF has also just decided to replace our aging fleet of F16s with Gripen E/Fs instead of the US proposal for F16 Vs.
We Thai people really like Gripen. Because it is a high performance aircraft. We don't want an F16 that doesn't have the freedom to operate. Thank you Sweden for helping us in many ways to modernize Thailand's aircraft systems.

They are serving our country, and they are real fighters. We honor them to advise what is best for our small country. Our plan is to protect, not to invade. We think they already do a good job, and there is nothing to complain about. We are a small country; there is no need to pretend to be big and spend too much, we have friends more than enemies. Better save our budget for many small people who are still in need.

Sweden has a high level of sincerity towards Thailand. America is not sincere towards Thailand. Thailand chose Jas39 Gripen which is correct.
The next squadron of fighter jets, if not F35, is expected to be replaced by Gripen in every squadron of Thailand.
Smaller countries should support each other to avoid being dominated by the superpowers. Personally I would like to see Thailand start investing in our own aerospace industry or co-develop with other ASEAN countries like Singapore, Indonesia and Vietnam. Perhaps they could do a deal with Sweden/SAAB for a manufacturing license to create ASEAN specific variants of the Gripen to begin with. That would be a start.

@@abmong As a Swede I must say you are on to something, for the Gripen E both Sweden and Brazil are waiting for the orders to be completed. If Thai and the Philippines work together it can happen as both are interested in Gripen. There are benefits in it for SAAB too.
The timing for some kind of tech transfer deal is perfect. And it would strengthen SAAB in the Asian market.

Royal Thai Air Force Currently choosing a new fighter aircraft model. The military's score is Gripen because Sweden is more sincere in providing benefits to Thailand. And there are no rules prohibiting its use. If nothing goes wrong, Thailand may get a fighter jet, a Gripen e/f.😊

Even if US congress approved to sell F-35 to us we still don’t have enough money to pay the maintenance the operational cost if we do we have to spend like almost all military budget moreover our air base structure doesn’t really fit for F-35

with Thailand defensive doctrine and the need to maintain regional military balance, I bet it's better that we stick to the Gripen for the next replacement batch.

When the Gripen undertakes a high speed pass, the turbine howl it creates is intense. Can't wait to see these in Ukraine, donated by Sweden of course.
