Two reasons I remember Zon basses from the 90s: Michael Manring Zon ads in Bass Player and the part in the movie Airheads when Steve Buscemi's character demands a Zon bass for when the band plays near the end of the film.
For a while in the early 90s music journalists talked about "funk metal" and lumped FNM in with Living Colour and Primus. But FNM were way more all over the place than that.
Zon basses, used by Michael Manring, Paulo Jr from Sepultura, former Machine Head's bassist Adam Duce, Tony Campos (Static X and Fear Factory)... Even Rob Trujillo uses one (for Sad But True)
Thank you Paul! Billy Gould is my absolute hero. The first song I've ever learned was Digging The Grave back in 2015. Not the hardest one but anyway it takes a lot of energy to play it correct. Still trying to cope with Evidence though :D
I've been really digging the Dobermann tracks. It's great to see someone who is cataloguing so many approaches to bass playing in action, and see what stylistic decisions he makes in his own playing.
In "falling to pieces" he does not bend the E on the fifth fret, he's doing "trills" on the first fret of the A, you can see it in the videoclip and also in the live videos.
I've seen Mike patton wear a primus frizzle fry shirt. Mike loves Claypool. Two big legends. They both didn't work together because both are very control freak and both are super creative so that just doesn't blend well.
Probably the most influential bass player for me. And without a shadow of a doubt the most overlooked. His contribution to bass in modern rock and metal is absolutely huge, much more than the likes of Claypool’s even, but Billy’s playing is still accessible without being bounded to the convents on playing a backing role on the downbeat.
Well yes and no. The main riff of Epic is one note, but during the guitar solo, there is a bass solo happening at the same time. Listen to the isolated bass track, i never realised until i tried learning it
As a smalltime bass hack I used to be, it always made me sick to play unison with any melody instruments, I always intended to play a unique line of my own to back and complement the melodies. And Billy has a great deal of inspiration in that. Great great bassist!
Once again, I suggest Muffi Puffi of Hevisaurus. He can somehow switch his bass from supporting, to melodic, to a lead instrument, and is able to fit a lot into his basslines, such as the pentatonic runs of Vaaralinen aivastus and the entirety of Louhikäärme ja ritari. You won't find much info, because Hevisaurus isn't very well known outside of Finland, but under the costume, he's played by Vesa Kuhlman (Currently) who used to play bass in Dingo.
I covered 'Kindergarten' with my band at one point, only for ourselves to have something to jam together. Boy, did I struggle with the timing of that bass solo...

Can you make a video about paulo jr from sepultura or Audie pitre from acid bath and shrum
Billy Gould is a criminally underrated bassist. Great video man!
I would love to see Jeff ament or Robert de Leo on here. Keep it up!
Hella cool to see someone reference Underwater Love... One of my favorite FNM tracks.
Subscribed 😅🎉🎉🎉

The most underrated bass player ever the real thing album is a master piece of his talent, one of the few bands the gives bass a spotlight
Thanks for covering an often-overlooked bass titan! Well done.

Billy Gould is EPIC !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! pun intended , highly underrated bassist, Great vid Paul !!!!!
You Did it! You finally did it! Thank you and Rex brown would be a good video too
Thank you Paul!

Love the casual plug of your own band lmao. Bold

Thank you, finally you’ve covered him. Please do a video about Eddie Jackson from Queensryche one day too
You should make a video of how to sound like Paul del Bello (you)
In "falling to pieces" he does not bend the E on the fifth fret, he's doing "trills" on the first fret of the A, you can see it in the videoclip and also in the live videos.
Such a creative and colorful bassist.
Hell yes. Thank you for finally covering Billy Gould. Now Al Cisneros would be great... Whenever you're ready. :)
That would be a great video
Al is pretty much like Geezer on steroids. Aggressive picking, minor pentatonic, tuned down, playing over the neck…
8:08 Mike Bordin wearing a Primus tee, obviously another slap bass band of the era.
I've also seen Herb from Primus wearing a FNM tee during I think the Frizzle Fry/Suck on This! days. Always nice when your faves are into each other.

He's actually on the Seas Of Cheese album doing extra percussion in Los Bastardos. ( It's like a freak out jam version of Here Come The Bastards.)

If all those genre experimentations sound weird, try listening to mr bungle ;)
Trevor Dunn bass breakdown
Great stuff as always! Would love a video on Joe Bouchard's bass work with Blue Oyster Cult.
I never noticed those parts that repeat a single note before. Epic and We Care A Lot basically just have one note?! Whatever works!

@@saulgoodman1201 Good to know!
Thanks bud. That was cool.

He's brilliant.
The musicians often get overshadowed by patton.
Good review. Another great video.
*Yes*
"Falling To Pieces" bass intro in not bending, it's a trill, very fast hammer on.
Could you make one of Dion Lunadon, former bassist of APTBS, please
Can u do paul mcartney
how to sound like billy gould: get a great drummer, buy a zon bass, be a bassgod. pretty easy?
I have the Zon bass Billy Gould signature model, personally signed for me by him. It's a cold dead hands bass I'll be buried with 🙂
Yeah Zon basses. Used by Billy and Paulo Xisto fronta Sepultura.Thats it
👍⚡🔥❗
Paisà magari non è il tuo genere.. Ma Paulo Xisto dei Sepultura?
now trevor dunn
I covered 'Kindergarten' with my band at one point, only for ourselves to have something to jam together. Boy, did I struggle with the timing of that bass solo...
probably one of the best bass solos i’ve ever heard, its so damn groovy
Do a sound like Sid Vicious! x) Haha
Superhero must have been a b side
That song came out in 2015 on their last album Sol Invictus. The band was supposed to tour this year, but that was cancelled due to the pandemic.
@@ElLegarto1662 ah yeah. I never dug too deep into Sol Invictus
What!? Epic is not played with slap? Well colour me informed.
Now i know Tom Delonge can play bass
