DO SIMON JONES OF THE VERVE!!!!
Who came back to this video after hearing that Andy Rourke passed away? He was truly an amazing bass player. He will be deeply missed
Yeah, I'm still in shock really, he was the reason I picked up a bass, trying to learn his bass lines, so melodic, funky at times. His bass lines will live on forever.
RIP Andy.
Me. :( It seems that PdB might be the only one out there who has put something so comprehensive on Andy Rourke.
Did he? Wow. He was a great bass player.
I met Andy via a mutual friend, about 3 years ago. He had come upstate with his girlfriend. They were enamored by what was available for such little money (at the time) in the Hudson Valley. Later, Rourke and I would split hairs about music and he would go on to tell me about his new musical project with singer, Dolores O'Riordan (The Cranberries). Then She passed. Mr. Rourke did manage to play some of the music he and Ms. O'Riordan were working on....I wish I had a recorder on me. It was pretty amazing.
I am generally "anti-your hero's" but Andy was a very approachable human....super humble....I had confessed my youthful love for him, and he assured me that he and the rest of the Smiths were "mere mortals". I am with the rest of the "Smiths World" in that I am feeling this loss....or trying to process this loss.
Listen to Johnny Marr's isolated guitar tracks, especially from the early albums. They're brilliant but they sound hollow and it's immediately obvious how important Andy Rourke's bass playing was to the songs. It's a shame that he's not as revered as Marr has become over the years because his bass parts were so good and critical to The Smiths' sound.
They are not hollow. They are specifically designed to not get in the way of the bass. Marr knew exactly what he was doing.
I think it is because Marr wrote a lot of Rourke's parts
@@sunepedersen8537 common misconception that Marr himself has confirmed is not true.
@@sunepedersen8537 Nah Joyce, Marr, and Rourke would all jam out the songs together then record them on to cassette to give to Morrissey to sing over. There's even videos of Rourke recording the bass parts himself in the studio.
Yeah I feel very bad for their rhythm section. The drums and bass are amazing, but Marr and he who shall not be named are just endless fountains of talent.
R.I.P. Andy. Bless you ❤
Andy Rourke's bass playing is essential to the smiths sound. If you catch the Smiths performance on the tube, he's like a machine
Barbarism Begins at Home is one of the best bass lines of all time!!!
Especially because whenever I hear it I can see marr and morrissey dancing to it
Rest in Peace Andy, left and indelible and unforgettable Mark on music from his era that continues to influence bassist to this day.
my bass hero, andy rouke. finally somebody recognizes too
I'm so happy you covered Andy Rourke here. Whenever I want to practice my pick playing, I queue up a Smiths song. I love how his bass lines bounce around so much, and the frequent octaves are good string skipping practice. The Smiths wrote some of the best songs of the 80s. Rourke was a huge reason why these songs remain so emotionally resonant even today.
Andy is so underrated!
As a huge Smiths fan & bass guitar player & web dev, this comment is such an unexpected crossover lol. Thanks for all you do, and great taste!
Andy is one of the great innovators on rock bass, though he’s maybe not recognized as such. When I run out of ideas on bass, I put on a smiths track, and am reminded music is boundless.
What a fabulous testament to an outstanding sadly now legendary bass player.
Thank you.
Such a sublime bass player... Puting the funk in the emotional sad guitar riffs of johnny
Mike Mills. Also great video again Paul!
Would love a video about Bruce Foxton from the Jam!
He never gets the recognition he deserves unfortunately. Great video to show how amazing he really is. He's 100% a GOAT I'd like anyone to argue why not, they'd have to ground to stand on
Rest In Peace Andy Rourke
R.I.P. Andy Rourke who passed away today May 19, 2023 (12:40 am Pacific time)
Extra tip is to get a chorus pedal. Rourke has one on for a majority of the mid to late part of the smith’s timeline. (Hatful of hollow onward) It helps to thicken out the bass sound in a mix with less guitar emphasis.
Loved it.....his style of playing is so unique....his genius is how he thinks about what to play....he makes the instrument sound entertaining to the listener.....the perfect accompaniment to the guitar legend that was to become johnny marr......Andy is often overlooked in the shadow of Morrissey and marr but to those that know he is a true maverick........thank you so much for all your hard work in putting this channel together.....jj burnel of the stranglers or Bruce foxton of the jam would be great.
Great tribute to Andy.❤
Thanks for doing Andy he's great,
His bass playing was a signature to The Smiths sound!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is an excellent analysis of Andy’s playing style. Great job!
He wasn't hogging the spotlight. He just got the job done and did it very very well. And Barbarism Begins At Home alone proves it. I'm surprised in a good way how many people miss him and all the press coverage.
Another one of my favourite bass players. The Smiths’ producer said Andy should have received royalties.
I luv Andy’s work. You sum up his contribution very nicely. Bello
Andy Roarke is one of my all-time favorites. This is a great video of appreciation. Excellent work! Have you done a video on Bruce Thomas? He was the bass player for Elvis Costello and The Attractions. That would be amazing!
So many great bass counter-melodies
Great video Paul, especially with the recent passing of Andy. Thanks for posting your videos with bass tabs, I've learned so many new songs by following your channel.
Great film Paul Thank you. RIP Andy Rourke..Half of the best rhythm section of the eighties...And the completion was fierce!
Hi Paul - this was a gem of a dissertation on Andy Rourke. Thanks for doing this. I am also really happy you did a feature on Alex James from Blur. You have a highly developed musical pallet.
Thanks for posting this series. Firstly, I love many of the bassists you cover, but also, I'm learning to write my own bass parts and the tips and hints you give are the most useful tool I've found for learning. So thank you so much!
R.I.P. ❤
You can definitely hear the funk influence in his bass playing I absolutely love his style.
Jack Bruce of Cream and or Noel Redding of the Jimi Hendrix Experience 😄
Great Video..i never thought Andy got his due. His bass lines are amazing. I kind of equate them to Tony Levin's bass lines for Peter Gabriel's "So". Nothing complicated or flashy..but the bass is there where and when it needs to be. It's brilliant!
I might be wrong but the way I have it the reason for F# tuning is that the strings react differently under more tension having more snap, which Marr prefferd aswell as forcing him to not rely on blues bends because of the higher tension.Great video as always!
Excellent vid of such an underrated bass player. Good darts!
Great video as always Paul! It's great you cover some of the less recognized bassists. E.g. Geddy Lee's playing has been analyzed by legions of youtubers (and rightfully so) but there are so many others who deserve recognition. I'd absolutely love to see a video about John Wetton - especially his work with work with King Crimson was phenomenal (and his distorted P-Bass tone was heavy as fuck)! Also, JJ Burnel from The Stranglers would be a really cool subject. Thanks and rock on!
Very much liked the way you have presented playing examples to show the riffs are played, old video and your explanation. Really good.
Fantastic bass player.. seriously under appreciated and under paid..
Making a Video about Andy Rourke and his work in the Smiths and not mentioning There is a Light That Never Goes out. that almost a crime. Such an amazing bassline
Man I love your videos!! Great detail on not just tone but the techniques too. Thank you!
Great videos mate, they've got me playing again. Ben Shepherd of Soundgarden or Rick Danko of The Band would be good subjects for a video.
This is a really great video, you go into depth about his technique and how to play like him. I am going to use all these tips in the future
I have two recommendations one Colin greenwood from Radiohead and Tina Weymouth from talking heads and Tom Tom clue
Jack Bruce of Cream aswell 😍🙏🏻
Yes please for Tina Weymouth!
@@nathanwilson2116 no no it's not Johnny's the guitarist and Colin this the basis look it up
Why I don't see your comment no more don't tell me you deleted it after you made a fool out of yourself
That shows talk what you know Nathan check your stuff before you come for me but I get it it was an honest mistake but make sure you check your resources
Great video
Excellent player
Very distinctive sound and rhythms
Love these! Rick Danko of the band is a monster who doesn’t get a lot of shine - but tbh I would LOVE to see something on Michael Anthony from VAN HALEN
Well done
Love Marrs' playing,a favorite.Andy always stood out as a bassist.
They had so many great bass lines...Another band with many incredible bass lines is Talk Talk!
This is brilliant! I’d love to see Alex james from blur
This is great series, I like it a lot. If you haven't already, do Steven Severing from Siouxsie and the Banshees.
Absolutely fantastic video. I love this series, very well researched and produced. I would love to see you cover Adam Clayton some day 🎸
Andy, RIP
love his tone and playing, as for his tone i would use a precision type bass with the mids scooped and the the bass and treble boosted. He had the perfect punk rock tone
Rourke was the ideal culmination of post punk and pop bass style. So melodic and complimentary to Marr's guitar playing, making the three piece sounds a lot bigger than they were.
I'd love it if you did a video on Dennis Dunaway of the original Alice Cooper band, one of the most underrated hard rock bassists ever.
I 2nd this suggestion
Yeah! A must! 🥦🥨🥦
You nailed mate, what a great review.
El vídeo que estaba esperando ... MUCHAS GRACIAS!!!!
You should do Trevor Bolder, bassist for David Bowie in his classic period. His basslines hit that sweet spot where they are melodic, chromatic and hit the chord tones in the right places
I think is very underrated bass player, Bowie always picked the best musicians
Sideburns
Never heard him get the kudos he deserves. The bass lines on Hunky Dory. Ziggy Stardust and Aladdin Sane are second to none.
sideburns
The bass stands out to me more than Morrisey’s vocals or Johnny Mars Guitar. Andy’s playing makes me move ❤
In my opinion his most beautiful bass line is found in the song 'Well I Wonder'.
you should have much more viewers. the stuff is always entertaining and interesting.
Next time you think there is still time to make your mark on the world remember: the songs reviewed in this video were composed when Andy was between 18 and 23 years old.
Now that you covered Andy Rourke it's time to cover Bruce Foxton of the Jam one of the most underrated but most deserving of a how to sound like video. Foxton's bass lines were the sound of The Jam.
Bruce Foxton and Andy Rourke are two most underrated bass players of all time. Don't hear them mentioned with the likes of Flea, John Paul Jones, John Entwistle, Sting, Paul McCartney and the like. May not have been in as big of a band as these lot but easily wrote some of the best basslines ever. In The City, Town Called Malice, Down In The Tube Station At Midnight, A Bomb In Wardour Street for Bruce and for Andy the likes of Heaven Knows I'm Miserable, This Charming Man, This Night Has Open My Eyes, Headmaster Ritual, I Know It's Over. Like those lines could rival anything those other GOAT bass players wrote.
Really enjoyed this
Sweet vid! Can you do JJ Burnell of the Stranglers?
A video on Mick Karn of Japan would be very much appreciated :-)
Sir, what an excellent and entertaining analysis, and you're spot on, some of what you say I'd suspected back then but much of it was really informative. I was a bass player myself and a big Andy Rourke fan at the time. Please can you do a video of Bruce Foxton of The Jam, Stuart Morrow of New Model Army and Martin Hewes of Redskins, three other fantastic bass players - I'd LOVE to see your analysis of their playing style! Great job, thank you very much for posting my friend! 🙂👍
Fantastic as always. I’m thinking, Robert DeLeo perhaps next?
Thank you so much for this excellent video!
A video about Chris Squire would be totally awesome.
Can you do one on Stefan from placebo please...love your videos
Let's see some more ska/reggae/punk ones, these are great
one of the best bass tones ever, thats why Morrisey solos suck, he is missing that AAA rythem section.
@66fredo99 la France you're right but Andy's personality is missed.
Good work with this. Smiths were great.
Superb video Paul
Please do Mark Sandman from Morphine or Tina Weymouth
RIP Andy!
Awesome videos. Make one about Rex Brown from Pantera please
Great video. Congrats!
Great channel, just discovered! What about Nick Seymour from Crowded House? Thanks for your work!
Death of a disco dancer.Andy carries that song.PS great series.
Absolute favourite bassist
The reason I got a p bass
How to sound like Andy Rourke
step 1: get a p-bass
step 2: be freaking good
It would be great if you could explore Steve Hanley’s work with The Fall
Tip 1 1:35
Tip 2 3:13
Tip 3 5:04
Tip 4 5:31
This is speculation on my part, but Johnny Marr was a Fender Jaguar player (for the most part). Those are short-scale guitars (24" instead of a Gibson 24.75" or Fender Strat/Tele/Jazzmaster 25.5"). As such, if you don't want the strings to be too loose and flubby, the Jag really benefits from either fitting heavier-gauge strings (for standard tuning) or, as Marr often did, tune up a semitone or two. I used to tune my Jag to F, then I had it with heavier strings for a while. The short scale length and stringing with 10-46 strings just didn't work for me.
This was a very cool video. Great job breaking down Andy Rourke's sound and style. I would love to see a video on Adam Clayton of U2. I subscribed and will check out your other videos. Keep rocking.
Great knowledge passing! Marrs needs guitars!
Was wondering when Andy was going to be covered
Mani from the stone roses next please
Great video, Paul. Have you ever thought about covering Scott Reeder from Kyuss or Al Cisneros from Sleep/Om? Two stoner rock fingerstyle players with very distinctive sounds!
Cool video, man; thanks.
Andy was key to the success of the band.
great! what about Gary Thain of Uriah Heep, great melodic bass
do Grosskopf from helloween next!
What about Mel Schacher of Grand Funk Railroad? Wicked tone and odd gear
How's about Robbie Merrill from Godsmack and John Campbell from LoG, please 👍🏻😁
