Dr. Finkel is what happens when you lean apologetically into what you love. Suddenly the most obscure thing becomes fascinating to everyone around you.
As a 37 year old Ex-PhD-student of Ancient History now gravely in love with Functional Programming… I aspire to be like Irving Finkel, too. Not the looks, mind you, but his kindness, knowledge and his humour are all quite endearing 😄
Why do all us antiquarian humanists - those with at least one humanities degree and a persistent interest in ancient languages or history - fall for FP? I'm a Classics major/ex-Arabist who's read a significant part of the Greek corpus (not to mention plenty of Classical Arabic literature and Hebrew too). I got so frustrated with procedural programming in Python that I wrote an FP that compiled into Python. Out of sheer rage at tedious programming.
There is a recent video Irving is talking about ghosts, mesopotamian ghosts, and he is telling one female ghost is having trouble, unsolved business, the solution they (ancient people) came up was to bring a totem of "a very sexy lover, bearded, of course, " that little comment he made was superb for me
I assure you, that if there was a secret society named after the Order of Merlin, and there were ranks that related to the profoundness of one’s beard, Irvine Finkle would most certainly be involved.
"What we call a diagonal; from the greek diagonal, meaning diagonal."
Mr finkel. Is a (by definition) real world wizard. An encyclopedia of knowledge and wired as wild as a bat, and far beyond that.
did you just write a Captain Beefheart lyric for Dr. Finkel? :)
It’s Dr Finkel, not Mr. He has a PhD in Assyriology from the University of Birmingham.
Yer, I had never seen that word before today either.
@@almishtiDon’t give him ideas like that! Too many rude words rhyme with BOTH Irving and Finkel.
He’s the real life Elminster
As a 31 year old historical linguist, this is who I aspire to be in 30 years.
Hi, I'm interested in going into historical linguists. May I ask where you studied and what you enjoy most about the job?
Good, the world needs more people like you
Only 30 years? This wizard is at least two hundred.
better start growing the beard now then
You want to grow a beard?
The third one is what we call diagonal, from the Greek diagonal meaning diagonal
I had to pause the video to finish laughing.
Dr. Irving Finkel must be protected in this time of madness at all costs.
Dr. Irving Finkel represents the invaluable timeless madness
Dr. Finkel will eat the current madness for breakfast
As a second semester sophomore majoring in history, Irving Finkel is the pinnacle of what I want to be when I grow up.
No you can not, you are a muggle, ypu can't attend his wizarding school by any mean. 🤔
Dr. Finkel is what happens when you lean apologetically into what you love. Suddenly the most obscure thing becomes fascinating to everyone around you.
Unapologetically*
Don't be fooled my his eccentric but friendly persona, behind that impressive grey mop LIES Professor Moriarty

It’s hilarious Dr. Finkel isn’t a Harry Potter fan because he’s obviously who most of its characters are based on

Kind of makes me wonder if the director of LOTR had Dr Finkel in, mind when he was trying to visualize / bring Gandalf to the silver screen. Lol
He could have made a great Tom Bombadil or a Blue Wizard
@@jasons2023 True. I agree.
What a Chad.
Irving is my spirit animal
Outbreaks of sanity and honesty are not well tolerated on UA-cam.

A very cool Uncle Grampa
I kind of have a crush on this guy.
At least I would love to be friends with him
Cool video.
Are we sure this man isn't secretly running Hogwarts nowadays?
I assure you, that if there was a secret society named after the Order of Merlin, and there were ranks that related to the profoundness of one’s beard, Irvine Finkle would most certainly be involved.
