getting paid and being financially independent (before I got laid off due to covid) really feels so much better than college. Even though I have 40-45hrs/wk carved out for a job I didn't necessarily enjoy, it was nice to clock out and just focus on hobbies & relationships when the work day is over. No all-nighters, no weekend last-minute cramming sessions.
Also, for some folks the workload will be different. Had to work 50 to 60 hour weeks in the last two months of this year. And nobody gives a damn if you get sick. Gotta hand in those assignments on time. I'm soo much looking forward to working!
you don’t get that much more opportunities with a degree. A degree makes you specialized in something specific.

I'm sure many (all?) of us agree that taking control of who designs your post-college life is the most valuable lesson one can learn as a young adult. Unfortunately, many adults go through life not being able to control their own lives and then experience an existential crisis when they retire because they can no longer rely on work as their identity. Adulting isn't a transition of a college identity to a work identity. Your college experience does not define your identity, just as your work does not define your identity. You define your own identity and have the power to design your life.
I wish my college life was fun.

Being in college in Japan is so much better than being full time employee. You can get scholarship and not worry about expances when you're an international student. And curriculum is so much easier compared to colleges in US.
My worst and most often recurring nightmares are about going back to Uni - and I loved my time there! It's just life after uni is so much better ❤️
Once I graduated I spent whole year hunting jobs. I couldn't find anything professional or suitable, fell into depression, moved back home. Then, I did coding bootcamp, where I had epiphany I must work in tech as it gives job security and in time I'll find passion for it. Now I'm pursuing my bachelor's in CS and I never looked back.
P.S. After college making friends got easier, especially compared to high school.
When I started college I used to look forward to the summers where we had no classes. Now, as I'm nearing graduation, I've started to appreciate college life more. I'm definitely nervous about adulting in the future, but this video made me feel a lot better!
It's very easy to get rose tinted glasses, I certainly do, but then I force myself to remember all the parts of college I didn't like (which was the majority of it), and all of a sudden I'm much more satisfied with where I'm at. I don't like working 40 hours a week, but now I'm self sufficient, I could afford to move in with my girlfriend, I get to have my own space, do things the way I want, organize my own home, plus all of a sudden I can buy nice things and still save plenty at the end of the month. Sure, post college life has its ups and downs but it feels really empowering. And then I remember adults lecturing us kids about how difficult this all is and how this is what growing up means... hell naw, adulting is the easy part of being an adult, the real shit comes when that disillusionment hits, that lack of purpose or meaning, and when you start asking the big questions and trying to find good enough answers.
College sucks. Even before COVID I wasn't having a good time. I can't see myself majoring in something else and I like what I'm learning but I never feel happy about it all. I just want it to end already, I'm hopeful that life after college will be better
You can make your life after college better but there's no guarantee! Having a decent paying job with a work life balance will allow you to fill your life with things you enjoy though so thats a positive!

Honestly, there needs to be a course in college or really high school called “Adulting 101” 😂
A second one in college called “Adulting 202”
Luckily our uni has this employability course to help lol but there should definitely be a "how to transition to an adult" course lmao 😂😅

I think colleges'/high schools' biggest fear of making such a course as "Adulting 101" or even "Personal Finance 101", would be the fear of dropouts or loss of interest in school from their students. Unless it was given in my final semester of school, I would feel so eager to want to implement what I learned from such a course that I might actually consider dropping out. If I knew what about a 401k, ROTH IRA, and how to achieve financial independence was earlier I would feel like being in school was taking away from me going out and actually trying to achieve such things. Or, if they taught you how to create lifelong relationships with people or about the process of moving out of home to your first apartment or buying your first home; then going to class for me would feel like such tedious task. It's like saying, "Hey, here are all these great tools for success after school BUT you can really hit the ground running with these things AFTER you finish school." I would definitely feel a lack of interest in taking classes and wish to just get started with my "real adult life" or post-school life. I am not saying that creating such a course is a bad idea but the fact that its never been done on a wide-scale makes me think of reasons like this. Of course these are just my thoughts, how does everyone else feel about this topic?

Imo college is easy to romanticize bc of the highs, but I am much more at peace now. The structure of work lets me exercise in the morning and learn/work on hobbies in the evening. I don't have to work late nights so much anymore. The social life is definitely harder, but if you put in the effort, it can be just as good as in the past.

This is something I could relate to, so much! Things were so good more or less and was predictable in many sense with all the support around me. But things became so much difficult and I learnt so many lessons by myself the hard way. I now feel so blessed that I got to learn so much about myself and things around life in general after college, which made me so much stronger and confident, than ever before. I wish the best to everyone and want to tell everyone and anyone who is struggling and kinda feel stuck and frustrated, that things will definitely get better. Just stuck around, take care of your health (both physical and mental), take pragmatic decisions and use your emotional intelligence wisely. Cheers! :)

I love this perspective. College is just like life - it goes the way you want it to and design it to be. Of course, there are caveats, but we have a lot more agency than we give ourselves credit for!
Now that I am turned 27 this year, ive learn that you are “an adult” when you take care of your needs independently. As long as you can pay for your rent, food and other expenses you can then do wtv it is that you want. Ive met everything, from fresh out of college kids doing amazing, renting and focusing on their careers, to some guys who only really care about their hobbies like videogames, anime and twitch to some people who are really making some serious mistakes (drugs and spending a lot on drinking and going out) but at the end of the day most of them pay for all of that with their paycheck and/or live alone, so its really no ones business what they do, at that point, when not even their parents or someone else have a say on your affairs you are just another adult.

I had a gap year after high school and I think that definitely helps to learn to be alone, and as you said have nothing planned whatsoever and dealing with the emptiness of the days
I feel really privileged to be actually working before finishing college because I actually know what I want to do, however now that im just a semester from graduating it feels really uncertain where my life is going to be.

I have quite a few goals that I can’t fully focus on one at a time. I think it’s okay and even good to jump around so you don’t get too bored in one, but maybe I’ll have to cut some things. Have a friend who started grad school in Spring 2020, his master's degree is now one semester away from becoming an online degree.

I've just been in campus for a year. I would say I was like 80-90% productive then. Now I'm slightly less productive cuz of staying at home all the time. Even the profs seem to be less serious than they usually were. It feels like things are slightly out of track.
I went to college after going into the military. Got a lot of money saved up, bought a condo after I got out, went to college for Electrical and computer engineering while balancing work/school/ and just life.
It was really rough but doing that helped me with not having any student debt.
She’s right, check yourself and make sure you’re taking care of you. College life for me was just like going to another job but paying to go to that job lol.

Adulting is lonely as heck compared to college. If you don't have an SO as a straight dude before you move out to the Valley, you're gonna be out of luck, or forced to look way beyond your usual circles and risk incompatibility instead.
On the flipside, if you're in tech and into men, as long as you take care of yourself and want to date you'll never need to search for opportunities! :')

I wish I had seen this video when I started my first job.. now 5 years later .. I feel like this video is showing me all the mistakes that I have made....
This video has been really interesting, because at the very least it showed me how non-representative the American (maybe Californian?) university experience is of broader university experience, both in North America and the rest of the world. A lot of these problems are things I have personally never seen anyone deal with (like having cliques in university, not knowing how to cook, etc.). Very insightful in that regard at least, to know how university social dynamics operate in the U.S.. I've been thinking about going there for grad school, so this is actually kind of valuable and entirely unexpected all at the same time lol
Wish I had more of an idea what I wanted to do with my life after university. But honestly, finding yourself and making friends, growing as a person and doing what you can to change your life if you're not happy with it, those things are invaluable. Something I heard recently, "You are the architect of your own life." No one else can do it for you, so you have to get up and change things for yourself.

I was literally venting to my father about this 1h ago. I know all this stuff that you said, I don't feel lost. I feel stuck, however. Watching this video reassured my that I'm on the right path. I just need to find where the ropes are so I can cut my binds to any anchors. Turning up the engine to 11 won't do nothing if I still have anchors holding me. I just have no clue where these anchors are. I thought it was college but nope. I graduated 1month ago and I still feel as stuck as Evergreen was.
I just graduated and decided that i dont want to work full time for now, so i dont. I was lucky and got job where I can basically work as much as I want to (with limits obvs) when I want to. My final year and thesis fucked up my mental health quite badly, so this work style is quite liberating and refreshing.
It feels like, for the first time in nearly 25 years, I'm finally in control of my life lol

I suppose this only applies if you start this journey in a nice work environment, with a decent salary and if you are not directly responsible for other people, like kids or old parents. Not every one is so lucky. In any case, nice video, gave me a lot to think about.

İ loved the video but I think it's kinda different for us who don't live in a developed country. You said that one can choose the place where one lives in, but that is nearly impossible here, and also the job in which one have to work. Here, if youre lucky, you get into a call center listening to the shouts of people you don't care about.
So, what advices would you think might be useful to adulting in this context ?

It’s funny, I worked after high school which I was Toyota Auto mechanic and in 1989 , I was 29 and I attended JC college majored in Psychology, social science , and Electronics 1995 they had no computer courses it was part of electronics We had networking, computer repair and DOS. I couldn’t afford cal state Long Beach to major in psychology. I had the credits but just couldnt afford it. I was able to afford Electronics and electrical engineering. Today, I am security tech and love reading psychology and philosophy. Downey California
I missed college. I miss getting drunk and dancing. I just want to sit around and play video games after work. I'm tired
For me, life after college is start by questioning urself with "who am I?", "What I wanna do?", "What I wanna be?". And yes, the scary things is u don't know which one will work out. Does ur academic background "enough" for ur post college life? I personally have Chemistry Science background. I used to working in a paint industry. But now, I'm a programmer. It's really a big gamble for me try to shifting career. But, I'm glad I did it back then.
note: I didn't mean to say being a chemist is not a good choice. But, YOLO and exploring new things might be good and might be not good for you. That is the gamble that I took.
I was a loner during my university days of BE and ME so my university/college life was not so fun, and one of the hardest things I had to cope with was that I had to immediately start working for a company with virtually no help from other people. University and college did suck, but a new-grad junior software engineer life even sucked more. I had to wait for 27-or-so years later after graduating with ME to realize that I could do whatever I wanted to do, provided with careful planning of not going bankrupt.
Also, good eating and cooking capability are a MUST for an adult. I wish I could learn cooking before 20.
I feel you, it's a difficult thing to realize and feel ready to take on, this whole adulting thing.
