Perfect explanation. I personally could have used this information 39 years ago. My boys will definitely benefit from this expounded description of batting mentality.
We teach our guys the same approach. The younger the player, the more we look for 1 pitch....a fb in YOUR Zone with less than 2 strikes. The only other thing we do in bp is we make guys look at a good strike so they are still comfortable hitting with a strike if they miss a good one.
Yo Matt! Longtime Padres fan here. Love your videos. Could you do a discussion on pitch recognition? The reason I ask is that I was watching F. Cordero take some at bats a few days back. To me it looks like he was working on his plate discipline (good) but was struggling with pitch recognition. But my interpretation of what pitch recognition is may be way different that what MLB players really do. So, a tutorial on what pro players call pitch recognition is would be great. Also, how would a fan pick up the symptoms when a player is doing it well or not.
I read Ted William's book, and I seem to recall he said he'll always take the first pitch (he'll swing at a few to keep pitcher's honest) but one of the first things they teach pitchers is to always get ahead in the count early with first pitch strikes. So....is ambushing the pitcher on his first pitch a viable tactic?
You are like the modern day Tom Emanski. I have a question about batting practice. Wouldn't hitters get better if they were being thrown curves, sliders, other junk, and fastballs in batting practices? Something to simulate what they'd see in the actual game. And do you think it's better for a hitter to learn off hitting from a pitching machine in a cage, or having someone throw batting practice? With a pitching machine, cranking it up to 90-95 however fast it can go could simulate the velocity easier than someone soft tossing you easy batting practice level fastballs ?
Can you make a video on how to go deep in a game for starters and stay fresh with a high pitch count. I was told I was going to be in the starting rotation this summer, but I was always a closer/ reliever and I tend to get tired and lose velocity after the 4th. Thanks!
Did you ever hit against a position player pitching in the majors or minors? Also, do you think it’s more common for a position player to get tossed into pitch in a one-sided blowout (or extreme extra innings) in the majors or minors?
@@haydencassera3110 2-0 3-0 and 3-1 are all counts where you can swing away. If the pitcher is behind in the at bat he has to throw strikes or put you on first.
wish i would've had this approach when young. coaches always said to never ever swing at first pitch. i always sat on first pitch, and would swing a lot. guys almost always threw fast balls looking to get a free strike. fought coaches all the time. so annoying.
How can we coaches, parents TEACH approach to our players? 12, 13, 14 and 15 year old's who seems NOT to have any approach on hitting! is very frustrating for me to see these kids just taking fastballs right down the middle and then swing at real bad pitches
How do u adjust if you're sitting dead red fastball on a 2-0 count but you get an off speed pitch?. Mike trout spoke about this, idk how this could be done.
Antonelli Baseball Matt great video, i get what you mean about when your behind in the count and late in the count you shoot the ball to right and pull off speed but what about 0-1 counts. Say the pitcher gets a fastball on you then what does he do?

Brent Dowland I know right, time machine would be nice.
this is the type of analysis that makes me appreciate watching baseball even more
Yes
See the ball, hit the ball. Run like hell
Love your channel man, keep it up, cheers from France
I love your 2 strike approach
Brilliant! Just left a game with the entire team struggling with two strike timing. Thanks.
That is so interesting. Changing the speed of your swing according to the count. Wow man. Sports I tell ya
Thanks coach Matt! This is really good explanation!
Matt, excellent video. Really great content.
Thanks so much!!! Thanks for watching!
Saw Ted Williams and had to check this out. Sounds like solid advice....

I love the boston accent okay's in there every now and then. reminds me of mike francesa ogay?
I would always adjust from a inside high swing since I cant really go back inside high if I sit on something low and away.
Excellent video!
i look for a fastball early because i struggle with offspeed, most pitchers also want a 1st pitch strike
Very nice I have teds book useful tool.
Curious what your thoughts are on forearm strength for bat speed and hitting power, great channel, thanks.
Awesome video great advice! Hey Matt what was the worst pitch you ever chased while in the majors?

burningphoneix- There are a lot of great hitters who will take advantage of that... Same with 3-0

How many years did you have in the MLB? Also, how long did it take you to get to the MLB?
Nick Perez look it up
This is good stuff.
I keep it simple and look for a strike. Two strikes I widen my zone and watch for a breaking ball but load early Incase it’s a fastball,
Where can I find the image in the thumbnail
Type in "Ted Williams hitting chart" on Google Images and you'll find it.

How often did you bunt and what was the preferred count? Great videos.
mikbakunin I'm sure everyone's preferred count is 3-0 😂😂😂

Now I can hit dingers on my slow pitch softball team!!
michael wilson swing up, drop your back shoulder. It's all about launch angle.
How much people called up from the minors, make if they play in the postseason? Still only major league minimum?

Seems like a pitcher tries to get ahead in the count early, then on counts like 0-2, 1-2, etc., they start throwing junk.
For sure! Thanks for watching and commenting!!

It's a ball or it's a dinger I don't know the postion of the ball the only thing I know is dingers only
ted williams wasnt a bad hitter
Approaches are bullshit. be like Michael Brantley and just take the same swing every time.
But you were a lifetime .193 hitter.
Yet he made it to the major leagues. What the fuck have you done?
In 50 mlb at-bats. I’ve had a lot more at-bats than that in my lifetime
That thumbnail looks really interesting. Where can I find it?
