“They are ours.” 1:46:35 Just incredible. I can’t help but notice the loose similarity of redeployment/rapid reinforcement capabilities of Napoleon’s formations at Rivoli and the Union’s at Gettysburg.
Probably because all the commanders in the US civil war were trained on what was learned from the Napoleonic wars 🙃like at 1:02:10 Napoleon attacked both flanks to get the enemy to weaken their center, which was one of Napoleons trademark tactics and its what Lee tried to do at Gettysburg it just didn't end as well.
I think this is Napoleon at its best, always in the back foot and always having to react. fighting both the Austrians and the Directorate being calm and collected in the worse of scenarios and almost always making the worse of scenarios into victories. almost no general can be as good as him without external help
Some of the Mongol generals were this brilliant with battlefield tactics in the 1220s through the 1260s. And the Muslim generals right after Muhammad’s death in the 630s through the 670s. And, of course, Alexander the Great. But that’s about it in terms of history.

Epic History TV is one of the very few channels that have covered Napoleon and/or his Marshalls in this level of detail and the only one that is coupled with animation. Viva la Epic History TV!
Napoleon found himself in some situations where it seemed impossible he could’ve clawed his way to victory. People often attribute Napoleons success to his enemies being ‘incompetent’ but I think both Wumser and Alvinci would’ve beaten any lesser general.
Oh yeah, most definitely. Even with Napoleon's skills, there were still some dangerously close moments such as in the Castiglione and Arcole sub-campaigns. When you actually track down the exact dates of the movements of the armies, you realize that Napoleon won just by the skin of his teeth through daring, audacity, and lightning quick manoeuvres. All of these had to factor into his success and, if even one element was out of place, it would have meant defeat. I've studied so many capable captains throughout history and don't think anyone else could have done it. Some might have come close, but fall just short; most everyone else would have been caught by Wurmser and Alvinczi's encirclement of their forces or forced to give ground entirely. The Rivoli sub-campaign, even accounting for Weyrother's poor usage of concentration (Provera, Bajalics, failing to use Mittrowsky's column), would have seen any lesser tactician destroyed. EHTV does have the numbers wrong for Rivoli, as Napoleon possessed only 20,400 engaged in the battle at most against 28,000 (25,100 if you don't count Vukassovich's column). Yet, Rey's division did not arrive until the end of the battle, so for most of the engagement, the actual French forces on the field were only 16,200, odds of 3:2. This is also because Massena had left the 32nd demi-brigade to guard Verona, so Brune was forced to hold off Lusignan's column with just the 18th demi-brigade (about 1,600 French vs. 4,400 Austrians). Even in the Bassano sub-campaign, you see Lauer concoct a plan to outflank Napoleon's positions concentrated around Rivoli and Verona, which is strangely reminiscent of the plan employed by Prince Eugene to bypass Marechal Catinat at the onset of his own Italian Campaign. By thrashing that operation as he did, he proved himself superior to a great captain (and one of his personal heroes), in that Eugene's plan rehashed by the Austrians were completely dashed. More so, because Wurmser and Lauer had far more resources than Eugene ever possessed.

Thank you, I came to post this exact moment after coming back, just like you. Awful doesn't quite describe it, it's like Ridley Scott was acting on purpose to craft the most obnoxious film possible.
@@GrandMoffTarkinsTeaDispenser If Napoleon's Marshalls were played by Carrot Top, Gilbert Gottfried, John Leguizamo, and Rodney Dangerfield, it would have been less obnoxious than what Ridley Scott shoveled out.
Didn't waste my time with it new it would be a stinker. Funny thing though Scott's first movie "The Duelists" is period piece from the Napoleanic era and is a good movie.

This is extremely well done. Ive read napoleon: a life and this explains the battleground in a much clearer the way. Also, the visuals are very helpful. Bravo
This series is easily the most informative and helpful overview of Napoleon's rise. I have read many works which covered his personality, misdeeds, successes and errors but always I felt something missing. This series brings the whole adventure to life in a thoroughly professional and accessible way. Watching these videos I am lifted out of the theory and gossip into the realm of actual understanding. I am very impressed by the detail and care obviously taken to provide true and comprehensive perception of this many-talented and many-flawed master of warfare.
Much better than Ridley's Movie. I don't understand why modern movies aren't made more in this way. Better strategic explanation and more wholesome geographic context. Heck, Kurosawa used it better half a century ago in 7 Samurai ...
His first film The Duellists was very good, but very average after that. Terrible DocuDrama of Gettysburg, but I will give Gladiator a B as it really wasn't dealing with 'real people' 'or at least I don't think it was?)
Ridley Scott's movie was a farce, Napoleon wouldn't recognise himself, total rubbish these documentaries are brilliantly entertaining as well as educational.
Thank you so much for this. Everything you produce is pure gold. This is absolutely incredible. I have watched this all the way through multiple times and will watch it many more times in the future.
I have no doubts that this, as well as your other videos about Napoleon, wil always be better than ridley scott's movie or any other "historical" crap hollywood will produce. You guys are awesome and gift for people with a true interest in history.
Napoleon was one of the Great Military Generals of Europe on the same scale of Military skills and Government management skills as Ceaser and Augustus. This man gave pride to France and organized his military like Roman Legions with much mover advanced logistics. These documentaries give justice only about 1/3 to what he accomplished both in the battlefield and as a statesmen. He was the Pride for France and Europe, and for Albanians and Greeks against Ottomans. What a great general he was.... Unmatched.
This! People often don't speak enough about how much the French Revolutionary wars and Napoleon inspired the Balkan revolutions, and especially the greek war of independence and it's Greek-Albanian warriors. Many of the commanders even served under the Grande Armée in Corfu
Absolutely epic! I have watched the entire two-hour episode in one session. Visualization of a strategic situation as well as battles are of top quality. Informations about broader political situation provide context. Keep up the good work :)
I'm 100% + convinced that Napoleon would still go down in history as "A GREAT" concluding his military carrier here at Campo Formio, without the stress of adding Marengo, Austerlitz, Friedland, Jena-Austendt, Somosiera and Wagram to his CV.

The first Italian campaign executed by Napoleon is a work of art among military triumphs. (The Gallic Wars conducted by Julius Caesar is another.) Despite the setbacks he faced on the battlefield he managed to beat the odds and show the world what he was capable of. Bonaparte set the stage for what was to come in this campaign. I couldn't help but be amazed by him and the courage of his men in what they were able to achieve. Thank you guys for making this and thank you to PMF productions too. Absolutely amazing.

I find this very detailed production to be of very best for a student of Military history. While a reader of comprehensive French history of the period would surely become familiar with the Generals who comprise Napolean 's inner circle it could not possibly grant the reader the fantastic degree of insight that this study of Napolean's Marshalls allows. As for the movie I just saw in theatres. If he wanted to do a movie on arguably the greatest conqueror there was. Then display his planning, cunning and execution. Show the strengthening bonds with him and his men. Show the risks of battle paying off. Show his inspiring speech to his men. This man earned his place in history. But rather… the movie was dominated by Josephine, he was belittled and shown to be weak. You never met his generals. You never felt excitement. You only saw what you’d think was a spoilt boy born into kingship. He was never portrayed as charismatic, he was never portrayed as successful. Napoleon was seen as a figure disconnected from reality that held a negative attitude rather than a beaming positive attitude of what he could accomplish. This director took on a film on Napoleon then ignored his history…why do I care about him whining to Josephine for more than half the movie? He won over 50 battles, would you like to delve into some and I’ll watch a romcom for a two hour love story? The pacing of the film is so bad you’ll end up confused as to what’s actually happening with the flashes through time. The explanations are horrid, they should’ve Atleast had a narrator so the butchery wasn’t so bad. To put it plainly friends I feel like a Prussian after the battle of austrilitz after watching that horrid, horrid movie. Please keep Hollywood away from all historical figures.

This series is literally the best historical documentary I've ever seen. I've watched Rivoli and Arcole about 10 times each.

Its the perfect combo of music, narration and pace.
That rivoli bit is so good….”all eyes looked to the general and he said ‘they are ours’ “
I have my bachelors in history. I teach history at a high school level. I was not a Francophile before I found this channel, but I am now, best most concise historical videos I have ever seen on UA-cam. Honestly, even better than 90% of what you see on TV. Please never stop making these.
So watching French people invade everywhere, burn down Europe and terrorise the catholic church made you like French people? Ok.
On me it had the opposite effect and made me love the coalition even more.
This is pure excellence , the editing, the correct use of music, the script, all the minute details, the maps, the historical paintings, the battle plan and animations, and let us not forget the amazing narrator , all combined into perfection.
This is by far the best history channel on YT, this has convinced me to contribute on patreon as I eagrly wait the next video.
I remember as a young student first being introduced to history I loved the maps that went with the text, especially the battle maps where they had regiments and unit markers much like these videos do now, back then I’d use my imagination to trace the movements of the units but nowadays we have actual videos to visualize! It’s amazing and just adds fuel to the flame of my love for historical events
The First Italian Campaign contains the essence of Napoleon's strategy and tactics.
Exactly and I was very disappointed when in Ridley Scott's movie they never mentioned the Italian campaign
That Ridley Scott's film was a caricature and it pales in comparison to what we have here. This is a masterpiece! Kudos Epic history!!!
idk why the director even bother show us napoleons private love life and that awkward s*x scene, crawling under the table like wtf.. who cares about that??
You guys are by far the best history content creators on this platform. Not only are your videos so gripping to watch, they are gripping to rewatch, and for a history channel that is an achievement. Never stop doing what you're doing.
This is one of the best documentaries on UA-cam and possibly my favorite documentary ever. Gripping and informative from start to finish.
I've been watching this channel for 8 years since your very first video on the Battle of Waterloo, one of my favorite battles. After 12+ years of studying Napoleon and the Napoleonic Era, I must say that this channel always quenched my thirst for such content, and with such amazing details. Thank you and your team for all your hard work after all these years! Vive l'Empereur
I never knew how intense this war is. So many ups and downs. Seems like two steps forward for Napoleon and a step back. Great video! I now appreciate not just Napoleon's genius, but his perseverance and determination to overcome all odds and not make a setback discourage him.
Their is only one problem with this production... You can't ever stop making Napoleon content in the future as I'd miss them too much 🤣 The Videos are just too damn good, great job as always Epic History TV

“They are ours.” 1:46:35
Just incredible.
Indeed. Belisarius is the only similar general I can think of.
Some of the Mongol generals were this brilliant with battlefield tactics in the 1220s through the 1260s. And the Muslim generals right after Muhammad’s death in the 630s through the 670s. And, of course, Alexander the Great. But that’s about it in terms of history.
Man, imagine watching all the individual battles and then rewatching everything as a series...
Truly an Epic Compilation

The one thing the trailer for the Napoleon movie did was get me to watch these videos. I've watched these 2 or three times over.
Bien que français...j adore ce format. Un anglais fluide et articulé donc aisé à comprendre. Des recherches historiques sérieuses et documentées. Une animation agréable et facile à comprendre sans parti pris.
Congratulations gentleman for your creation and work . its a real pleasure to watch !
Epic History TV is one of the very few channels that have covered Napoleon and/or his Marshalls in this level of detail and the only one that is coupled with animation.
Viva la Epic History TV!
The visuals, music, and storytelling were absolutely stellar for this video... outstanding work.
This is unbelievably well done!!!!! I've watched it three times. It pays all the homage Napoleon and the French Army deserves.

I see Like me you seem to have a habit of going off an a tangent and giving the details but it was an interesting comment you just posted!
Wumser was a good general. Anyone who says he is incompetent is not educated enough to discuss the napoleanic wars
Had to come here to cleanse myself of the atrocious Napoleon film.
That film is bad.
Glad I didnt waste money on it then💪😂
As an ex Lecturer of Classico Romano this programme is the finest I’ve ever seen. The Narration and Animation authentically Superb. Thank you the PMF Production team and researchers who put this wonderful epic enactment together!!
Watching Epic History TV’s Napoleon series will forever pull me in more than any hollywood studio film. Thank you for your hard work it shows!!! ❤

Napoleon being outnumbered asking the enemies to surrender and they did😂😅
His Charisma alone is enough to make enemies shaking
Absolutely epic! I have watched the entire two-hour episode in one session. Visualization of a strategic situation as well as battles are of top quality. Informations about broader political situation provide context.
Keep up the good work :)
This is soooooo much better than any movie I have seen on Napoleon. Top notch.
I'm 100% + convinced that Napoleon would still go down in history as "A GREAT" concluding his military carrier here at Campo Formio, without the stress of adding Marengo, Austerlitz, Friedland, Jena-Austendt, Somosiera and Wagram to his CV.
It's look like watching movie in a modern cinema, the narration is beyond perfect voice is priceless.

If I fall asleep with UA-cam on, these videos will be playing when I wake up almost every morning, no matter what I watch when going to sleep For some reason the same episodes are played again and again. Alexander, Julius Caesar, Konstantin/Bellasarius and sometimes Bonaparte.

Brilliant account of the battles , when ya think about wars and battles and the amount of men that died over the centuries all over Europe , it’s scary .
Men such as Marshall Lannes, Berthier and Ney you come to see as his '^go-to' Generals

Capn save a h03ism ruined the film?
