Not something I talk about often, especially in public. I used to work in Hollywood as a make up artist. I was helping a friend on the set one day of a shoot that Diane Keaton was directing. During a break she sat down on the floor next to me she spoke to me as if we were old friends. She is so real, so kind, so good. One of my fondest Hollywood memories and I'm sure she doesn't even remember that short moment in time.
I always loved Diane. I think she is so unique and so different from all the Hollywood celebrities, who all have a similar way of behaving and presenting themselves. When my youngest brother was 18 he wanted to know what it was that was exactly wrong with our uncle - our mum's brother . My mum's never been able to be very open about him, but she explained that it was like Russell Crow's character in "A Beautiful Mind". I was leaving Gladstone’s Restaurant (the corner of Sunset Blvd and PCH) one night and as I walked past the hostess stand, my eyes locked with Diane Keaton’s - ( my brain said be cool, be cool and I smiled and kept walking)She was wearing this black flat hat (like in the interview) and a black coat with a big wide black belt and a full skirt. She looked like a star…she was my only celebrity encounter in 6 years living in SoCal
Moment 5:23 when something her brother wrote during the filming of 'Reds' hits Diane at her core...a very different interview than Keaton usually gives. And I LOVE it!!
My brother was an alcoholic for about 50 years, his entire adult life. Listening to her describe her brother's life was paralleling my brother's journey. There was a brief moment of 6-8 months when he'd come out of the hospital and starting going to AA and it was a joyful time for those of us who cared about him to see him sober and happy. It was too short though and he fell back into the monster of drinking. In the end he was physically ill, being taken to the hospital over and over, alone in his house for weeks when he wouldn't answer the phone. It can be tough for those of us who don't have this addiction to really understand what an alcoholic is going through. Just stop, just stop, you're going to die if you don't stop means nothing to them. For many they can't stop until it kills them. Now my brother is in a small box on my lanai with the ocean, and the sun, and the trade winds to enjoy in peace.
Her brother was very gifted. I believe we choose our lessons each lifetime. This was the path he chose for lessons. My feeling is they have had a very close relationship in past lives❤
Very touched, as I sit here sobbing. Over many years, maybe 20 years, some people said that the stigma of mental illness is ‘finally’ lessening. It’s still being said but repeating something over & over does not make it so, as we all know. The quiet and private people…I think their thoughts and feelings run very deep so it’s really something for Keaton to share this with us. *the photo of her brother instantly made me think of Richard Chamberlain. Her brother is quite handsome.
Her work on “Reds” is unbelievable, some of the best acting I’ve ever seen, if not the very best. Do yourself a favor and watch this one, if you haven’t yet.
My family did not mourn the death of my mentally ill relative. We mourned her life. It was at a time when people were placed in crowded, rat infested institutions where the mentally ill patients were mistreated. Now, we have medication. We need to talk about this more, even if it hurts to talk about it. Only then, will we see change for the better.
Yes, now they live out in the community with us and slowly poison the rest of their families. It’s a wonderful improvement. Oh, oh, and they live longer too, because of the great medications, which really only prolong the agony.
@@malkaz9167 , I'm a child of the 50s. Perhaps, because I lived in NYC" I was aware of mental health facilities, inpatient and outpatient. I had a great aunt who lived in a state hospital.
@@pickles9440 also, with medication, some sort of "normality" is achieved and with it.....now we are allowing the mentally ill to breed. Ensuring that even more people will be beholden to meds.
Diane also has two other sisters (that I remember anyway) Robin & Dory. I went to school with them (Santa Ana High School) and when I was pledging for a sorority there, I was taken to their house to clean their bedroom. When I realized I was in Diane's old bedroom as I looked around, I was in awe because to me, she was already "famous" and that is a cherished memory from my youth. 💜

I just Love Diane! She is one of the Greats! Nothing negative can be said about her. Just look at all the glowing comments from everyone here! I hope she knows just how much her fans adore her.
Love can make ANYONE beautiful. The magic elixir that can cause someone ready to let go of all the pain this life has to show and move through the veil, to stop, and think again of the little nuggets of sweetness that life has shown us through the years.
Love shows itself differently to different people. Some folks need to hear others say I love you. Some folks don't know how to say it. Some people give their lives every day to provide food and shelter because they love someone and their gift isn't even seen. Just appreciate life and the people who share it with you. It's fragile.
Helen Patterson The book , The Five Love Languages covers this. I never felt loved by my mother,,, her main love language was acts of service -if you asked her. She was a narcissist too, most likely./////// I saw like a yin yang, here.... An over achiever/ underachiever. But there was some sort of inability of Dianne to be completely egotistical which makes her so much more embraceable ,,, she almost is, or is, apologetic for her achievements. As though she steps outside of herself. Her brother stepped all the way out. Artistic temperaments? Expressing differently. There had to be some other pathology operating there. I’d be interested in reading her book, though.
I’ve always loved Diane Keaton but didn’t know how much until I watched her speak about her brother. She apologized for crying, which tells me she really is a lovely person, inside and out.
I never really understood what a drinking problem was, until I went away with someone on vacation who had a drinking problem. Then Bingo it hits you it's a problem because it's a problem for you. It's awful to have someone in your life who just drinks and wrecks precious moments and memories. You have to feel sorry for the family, I would not be able to live with that full time.
Even worse when the alcoholic tells those closest to them that "yes, I drink, and YOU seem to have a problem with it" after ruining christmas yet again.
I love her! I've watched something's gotta give a lot! My fav! Also I have a son with mental illness it's so hard . He's done better but battles depression daily.
Diane, my brothers and your brother are very much alike. My brother is a raging alcoholic and has mental illness. He also now has brain damage due to a freak accident and tries to use it as an excuse. It isn’t an accuse when he is smart enough to hide, sneak, manipulate, lie, steal, and do anything to get his next drink. He is also the man in town neighbors whisper about. It’s sad. I feel your pain, along with your unconditional love for your brother. Love the addict, not the addiction.
As hard as it is...these people canlive like this because somebody is paying their bills. Enablers. Sometimes the only good and right thing is to cut the addict off completely. For their and your good.
I too have such a brother. I can't even believe he is still alive. Al Anon family groups have supported me so greatly. If you haven't already, you might want to give them a try. Hang in there -- lots of love to you.

Like Diane's brother, my sister was mentally ill and was diagnosed with stage 4 bc. She never went to the doctor and when she finally did this is what she was diagnosed with. She lived for a year and a half after the diagnosis. She was always a positive soul and I loved her very much and miss her always. I totally understand the feelings that Diane has because I too have them. I lost my sister on Valentine's Day 2012. She was a hippie love child and somehow picked her last day to prove it.
Diane: You are and were the best sister Randy could ever have. I think your wishing you could have been "a better sister" translates (for me ) to, "I wish I could have stopped Randy's drinking. That never was and never will happen -- and it would not matter how much you wanted it not to be so. I am powerless over other people and the decisions that they make in their lives. I am in sober recovery for decades and my sister brought me into recovery, picked up again and is gone. Gone. Decades. Gone. I keep her in prayer but just like you -- I have a life and I have made a life understanding that my sister's life choices were her own and I have to respect her decisions while taking care of myself. And by the way, she never once asked me for my opinion about how she lived her life and it was never my job to offer one or try to "fix" her. Blessings ✨🧡✨
They call them mentally ill....but they are really sensitive souls with questions demanding answers. They feel the weight of the world on their shoulders....never content to just live life as "normal"....but always wanting everything to be alright with, not only themselves, but the world. This made me so sad for Diane, because I know how it feels to deal with this.

Still such a huge amount of stigma
There is no one quite like Diane Keaton. My husband and I love when we come across one of her romantic comedies on TV. SHE IS THE BEST!
Diane, you’re truly a BEAUTIFUL soul.🌸 God bless you, always.🌸
Her work on “Reds” is unbelievable, some of the best acting I’ve ever seen, if not the very best. Do yourself a favor and watch this one, if you haven’t yet.
Diane Keaton, has been and will always be a role model to me. Thank you for sharing yourself and your life with us!!
When in time are you speaking about?
@@manthony777 This was in the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s. Unfortunately, I see many street people now who need mental health intervention.
He is SO beautiful on the outside. I'm very sad that he was so tortured on the inside. Imagine how hard things are when dementia is a blessing.
Mrs Keaton is one of my favorite actresses of all times. She truly unique and I admire her for that.
I absolutely love her and her sense of style and humor...
Diane is such a special human being. I was taken back by the photo of Randy. He reminded me of Richard Chamberlain.
Diane's love for her brother is really beautiful.
Excellent, thank you for this important interview.
Diane Keaton, we love you ⚘
All those pictures and videos just show that life goes by fast and we should cherish our loved ones as much as we can!
He looks like an older Richard Chamberlain in that last picture. How fortunate to have a loving, non judgemental sister to love him unconditionally.
This story deeply touched my heart and soul❤~Thank you for sharing the journey, Diane, that Randy and you have been on together in this uncertain lifetime!!
As a Sister whom has lost Siblings to both addiction and mental illness, truly do appreciate the heartfelt honesty in this story of navigating family, love, loss, heartache, and somehow still JOY in the end~BLESSings to you both🙏:)
Holly Fisher so sorry
Thank you beyond words, Mary, for your sweet compassion~It has been tough losing family members who are only in their young 30's💔~ yet there certainly is some PEACE in knowing both are
now completely healed and in a wonderful place, without all their struggles here on Earth🌠...
May God Richly Bless You and ALL Your Loved Ones in This Lifetime❣:)
I like her a bunch, and i appreciate her speaking openly about her eating disorder history. It helped me with mine.
She was a narcissist too, most likely.///////
I saw like a yin yang, here....
Wow, such a sad story, and a contrast to Diane’s usually jolly persona. But, I’m glad to hear that they are doing well. Bless Diane and Randy!
I’ve always loved Diane Keaton but didn’t know how much until I watched her speak about her brother. She apologized for crying, which tells me she really is a lovely person, inside and out.
Kathy agree, there is an incredible sweetness about her.
Thank you. Love Diane and her love of all. Sending love, light, peace, abundance and joy to all.
Mental illness is hard.... and real
Diane’s Dad, Jack Hall, was an absolutely wonderful Civil Engineer! My husband worked at his company and really enjoyed his experience there.
I sister's unconditional love..amazing!
"wrecks precious moments and memories". TERRIFYING, I KNOW.
At one point one has to choose, and your own mental sanity and self preservation becomes the priority.
@@selmahare it is very hard...
Even worse when the alcoholic tells those closest to them that "yes, I drink, and YOU seem to have a problem with it" after ruining christmas yet again.
She is and was always such a beautiful soul. I always loved her movies.
I'm 32 and I think she's still gorgeous.
What a nice interview - and her brother's writing is quite beautiful.
This made me cry coz I am just like her brother and worst is that I am alone in this battle.
I love her! I've watched something's gotta give a lot! My fav! Also I have a son with mental illness it's so hard . He's done better but battles depression daily.
cindy127 we have that in our family as well. It’s tough.
It IS tough Cindy, no doubt. Keep going ❤
Everyone struggling with Substance Use Disorder should be so lucky as to have a family member like Ms. Keaton. What a wonderful human being.
WONDERFUL interview. She is an icon and a remarkable insight into her sibling relationship.
Please take care of yourself. Prayers for you.
Your brother isn't "smart enough," he is living at a feral level. Compassion to you.
I am so sorry about you and your brother. I’m glad that after all you recounted, you still can love the addict. Best to you...
God bless you, Diane! He matters so much!!!! And yes, he is so beautiful.
Totally understand when Diane talks about becoming closer after the Dementia diagnosis. It's the same with my dad and me:(
my Mom and me. ♥
No one can take away that love you feel in your core for your sibling. Not even them.
I don't struggle, I struggle with others not knowing they have mental illnesses! I have my own safe way to be mentally sane.
What do you mean? Hard to understand your way of speaking.
Just Love Her!!! So real & going thru the dementia of her Brother Randy & looking for the positives.
Diane looked aftet her mother and her brother. One of the most generous bosses and loving and generous on sets.my friend and my son told me.
But my favorite actress forever and a fashion icon.i grew up in orange co.
In the 50s and 60s .my husband said we had the life that minnesota kids dreamed of .Always at the beach.i love her .
Diane is a class act ... she is right every family has someone that struggles with addiction , mental illness and its very hard to help our love ones !!❤
Dang it...Diane Keaton is such beautiful lady in more ways than one. I just developed a little crush on her I think.
Blessings ✨🧡✨
how wonderful you are Ms. Keaton to open up about this...
Diane thanks for sharing it helped. IAM retired and use to work with dementia they were my loves! So darling!
She’s so fly!!! I just adore her 🥰🥰
May we all be so fortunate to have someone to have someone love us as much as she loves him.
Wow this was emotional. It made me cry
❤
Diane Keaton - what an interesting woman (and interesting life she's had.)
Diane Keaton is one of those great people that touched our hearts and thoughts as she is such a beautiful person inside and out .
I did not know this about Diane Keaton’s brother….as someone with mental health struggles, I feel lucky I never drank or did drugs. Nevertheless it was still an incredible struggle and I don’t wish it on anyone. Thank God for medication! I now have a career although I still struggle finding a partner to share my struggles (and joy!) with. Not gonna lie, it’s a painful, lonely life at times. But beautiful. My family has been instrumental to my survival and my ability to stand on my own two feet (with a masters degree!) To all those silently struggling: I see you. You are valuable. Don’t give up.❤️
Love her and I am so sorry about her brother~~🥰
For me personally
Baby Boom movie was my first introduction to her finest n most pure acting
Diane Keaton such extraordinary human being ❤❤❤
I m glad your sharing your family mental health. Thank you
LoVeLy tribute for her, but also from her to her brother.
Unconditional and Non-Judge-mental Love, the PUREST kind. ❤️
A very special lady! 🥰
I had to look up her age: she's 74! What the hell, she sounds like she's in her 40s, at best
@@mrs.847 Keaton has famously NEVER had plastic surgery, she wants to "go out authentic".
@@mrs.847 Poor, bitter you.
@@SheilaR.08 I guess it's all in what you wanna believe. There's no proof she had surgery and no proof she didn't.
No plastic surgery either x
Maybe no plastic surgery, but injectables seems to be something that she’s had since she has so much volume and lack of wrinkles for her age.
My brother has schizophrenia and know how devastating it was and is for him and the people who know him
I feel you, my sister has schizophrenia, too. Our mom passed away 7 years ago, and it has, been quite a journey for us.
I have a younger sister and we are both in our 40s now. it's wonderful to have a sibling when you can remember the past but be present and look forward to the future
I love Diane Keaton ❤️
Love her movies 🎥💕 she is so humble and Crazy like alot of people I know God bless you 🙏❤💙💕
The pic she took IS beautiful: he is looking back, in his broken body, at unconditional love.
