Matthew had his struggles as do many people in this world, but at his best he still was able to put one more positive thing in this world even if that meant him not being here anymore. His family is brave for going forward with what he ultimately wanted to do next which was help people.
I remember watching Kieth more than 40 years ago on Canada a.m. This conversation is an excellent example of good journalism in this country... information without exploitation.
I lost my beloved son at 46 yo. When he was 38 yo we found out he had Muscular Dystrophy. What confounded the doctors was we have no family members on either side that had this genetic disease. Actually, it hurt so much to lose him. I feel for you Keith, so sorry. Blessings.
Great sensitive interview Tom. Matthew seemed like a very likeable guy and it's just sad what being in the throws of addiction can do to anyone. It's certainly the downside of being able to get whatever you want, regardless of how bad it is for you.
Thank you so much for this difficult conversation Tom and Keith. I'm sure it's a problem everywhere, but the number of options for rehabs in Canada is abysmal. Especially on the East Coast. There are literally no options at all in Newfoundland besides a 30 day alcohol treatment program, which is NOT even close to enough for opioids. I helped someone very close to me get into rehab last Christmas, and even in the very lucky situation we were in where we could pay the money to get him in right away, the only Atlantic Canadian option we could find was 50 days(still not long enough). THEN after all that hard hard hard work he put in, there was only ONE safe, sober living option in the province of Newfoundland which had a 2.5 month wait time before he was able to get in even after successfully completing the rehab program. Absolutely ridiculous. When someone makes the decision that they are ready to get help, we need to be able to provide them help IMMEDIATELY, and then the only path to success is to provide supportive care once they come home.
His pain and grief is expressed in his eyes and voice. Very sad interview. I've always liked Keith Morrison and loved his son, Matthew Perry. I'm sorry for the loss of your stepson. My sincere condolences to you and your family. Matthew was so talented and his struggles were so sad.
I agree, this is so heartbreaking. As a mother who lost a child (as an adult) as a result of addiction - you never get over that loss. Irregardless of the heartache that you go through during the years addiction and the many relapses, you love that child (no matter an adult, they are still your child) and you know them beyond the addiction and the beautiful people they really are underneath all of that. That is what is so heartbreaking on top of the loss. They are still a human. I have felt such anger towards those people who facilitated his addiction for the monetary benefits and ultimately are responsible in aiding that. I personally hope they get many years in jail and lose everything they have (they are still alive and the people they facilitated are not). I am just listening to the end of Keith’s interview and he is so right that addicts need longer for treatment and have a place for them to move to after, monitored, treated and cared for. A year at minimum is needed. I hope that Matthew’s Foundation will be able to do as much of that as possible. My heart is with his family.
This Keith guy is just something and I think Matthew really appreciated him and loved him deeply and I can see why. He loved Mathew so much and he explained everything so well that they went trough and it is so sad. But M. P. was a king and to me will always be. He was an addict but he was great person, smart and funny.

I always watched Matthew on Friends and in various movies because his talent made me feel good.. So, I continue to do that- Matthew's talent was SO unique and incredible!! I am so sad that he lost his battle, I feel deeply for his family- and I am grateful that his talent lives on💔♥️
This interview was conducted in just the right way. Also I think the point about the lenght of a stay in rehabs seems very valid. The longer someone could stay in residential treatment, even a year or more as the way to go for a firmer chance at recovery makes sense but this has always been a matter of money and of course insurance companies. Great this was pointed out and is being worked on.
I will always think fondly of Matthew. He had a huge impact on me. I was so hoping he could slay the dragon. He was so so much more than a dragon slayer. RIP amazing soul. To his family my sympathy. It must be so hard to lose a person like Matthew. If it helps at all I have been, and am determined to continue, living a much healthier happy life. I am so grateful I've never had to deal with a family member on drugs because it's all consuming. You'd constantly be battling with the choice to cut them out of your life so you don't have to struggle with the fallout from one crisis after another.
So, so important to remember that Matthew was prescribed phenobarbital in very early infancy, which set him up for a lifetime of addiction. How might he have been if he hadn't been so powerfully sedated for his newborn crying?

You have to have self love. Without it, you can spiral, lost it all. No one can make you see your worth, but you. You have to want to save yourself, and you can, if you see it that way.

And when he talks about the cellar under the stairs 😢😢😢😢.. ❤When Keith talks about that time as a child, I have a hard time... Otherwise we can see that he loved ❤❤ it, it disgusts me that the assistant dared to call... He was a trusted person for the family and was betrayed. It can't be easy but they look strong ❤
Only one question and this is valid for any problem a person wants to solve. Why didn't he opt for another route seeing that the one he was taking (doctors, rehab) didn't work? There are plenty of other ways, but the person has to be willing to be more open-minded.
Unless you have lived with a drug/alcohol addicted person it is natural to blame the family. No parent wants their child to be addicted to drugs and tries desperately to help but unless the individual wants to quit and change their lifestyle it does not work. I think Keith and Matthew's family are right to try to get long term help for people but it always comes down to money. The Government only has so much health care money and at the end of the day will they want to spend money on mental health and drug addiction? Its 15 to 20 thousand to get into a 30-day rehabilitation program here in Canada. What would a year cost you? Who could afford it? It is such a huge problem but at least Matthew and his family are making a start. Someone has to start somewhere. The lack of help is appalling and is so frustrating.
It’s sad that we don’t realize the old values handed down to us Mothers play a very important role in our lives and how we grow up is the bonding in the formative years of childhood of right and wrong so that it evolves with us as we grow. We do need the presence of God in our lives no matter how rich or poor to help us go thru this life
I hate to say it, but it could have been worse. Matthew could have survived and been horribly brain-injured. An acquaintance of mine has an adult child in long-term care due to a “recreational” ketamine overdose.

He lacked selfconfidence and came from a family who wasn't able to support him in the way that he needed to thrive, coupled with depression. It's amazing that he survived as long as he did.
Starting and continuing to take drugs is a personal choice.... time and time again, his parents spent countless hours and funds sending him to rehab...

If you haven't been around an addict then you really don't understand that it isn't a choice. The first time, yes, but if you are predisposed to alcoholism or drug addiction (it's real) it stops being a choice. It is nit a weakness. It is a disease.

Addiction to me is in the genetic makeup. This is not something that is a choice and breaking it is very difficult.
