Just a hint for contact cement: apply to both surfaces with a very thin coat, then let both surfaces dry for several minutes. Once dry, press the surfaces together firmly. They will bond instantly and will require hardly any clamping.
I MAINLY REPAIR leather and sails, for myself, so use the original holes if i can, i use sailmakers needles which are pointed. i learned that you pre-drill for the stitching, and that grooving tool is great, i noticed your needles had rounded or BALL ends, much easier, as they wont pick up the first thread thro the hole. i like also your wheel spacer for marking stitch length, - i bought one some time ago, without knowing what it was for, but then figured it out, i knew it was something I could use somewhere sometime, - never too late to learn , - SAILOR 75 years old :) - THANKS I WATCHED your knife making video first, then searched for this link..... :)
Very nice work. ,a side note for you ,olive oil works great on leather ,I've been using it for 30 years and it's great. Thanks for the videos you take the time to make.
Excellent job...instead of wet hand forming, use a Food Saver, and vacuum seal it for about an hour. Works great! I do that with all my sheaths and holsters. Saves time and works great!
WATCHED BOTH VIDEOS, FROM THE RUSTY FILE TO THE FINISHED PRODUCTS HERE - YOU DUN GOOOOOOOD! - BRAVO! I BET YOUR WIFE LOVED HER HAND-MADE PRESENT! - I ENJOYED IT ALL, GOOD WORK, KEEP IT UP, LORD BLESS YOU BOTH!!!!!!!
I use a little piece of elastic for my fire steel lanyard. That way it can stretch around itself easily and stays secure in the loop. Nice job on that sheath.
I use shock cord for most of mine. It’s kind of like paracord except its stretchy like elastic. In a pinch I’ve been known to use those stretchy hair ties girls use to put their up in ponytails. Cheers mate and happy trails
Really enjoying watching your videos. Loved this one a lot as I wanted to learn how to build a sheath with a loop for my fire steal. Thank you again for taking us into your shop and sharing your passion.
I am very new working with knives and you have given me a lot the things I should be doing. Even better are the things you tell to everyone, very calm, and even shows the things that you show your mistakes. This is great and I watch every night!
Jesus! Look at that thickness of the leather.. Am loving this show Sir.! i'd love a cpl. sheath's from you for sure. Dam-it, am very jeoulos. Very very nicely done. Most Thank-you !!!!
Man it’s amazing the level of care and thought you put into everything you do. I know this sounds a bit dramatic, but they just don’t make nice sheathes like that anymore. You buy a mass produced knife with a sheathe it will have nowhere near the care that was put into this one. Thank you friend
I know this video is two years old but did anybody else notice the secret ingredient added to the water for making the leather supple??? Yep! dog drool! 🐕
Nice job ! For the firesteel loop, 'don't need to sand it for thickness, just put it back into the water and clamp it hard into the vise (more material = stronger) ;)
Amazing knife and sheath, thank you for sharing this build with us! Know how hard it is to document and film especially when there are power tools involved. Thanks again!
Beautiful knife and a beautiful sheath to go with it...I would gladly buy this very knife and sheath if possible...regardless,very nice work.you did a great job.your wife should be very happy with this level of craftsmanship
Beautiful knife and sheath. Maybe a little darker leather. Also try Snow Proof for leather or Obenauf’s Heavy duty LP leather conditioner. Both are great.
Nice work! I've been getting into both knife making and leather work lately, and I'm learning a lot on UA-cam. Learned something from your video, so thanks.
Hey, I really like your videos. Between your calm voice, the music, and the video production these are very easy to watch. Suggestions for sheath making...use 1/8" or 3/16" shock cord (bungee) instead of the Paracord for the tightest hold of the fire steel. Also, I just tried something that I recently saw here on YT for wet molding and it worked great. Use a vacuum sealer like a FoodSaver for the best wet mold results. Leave the knife in the sheath for 10 to 15 minutes under vacuum. Remove from vacuum bag, remove the knife and let dry. You may need to massage it a little around the handle as the vacuum is being pulled. If one side of your bag material is textured, you will need to put something behind it. I used a double thickness of file folder material cut to the width of the sheath.
A couple thing you should invest in a beveller and when you stitch you should lock your stitches. Also it will help if you case your leather when you go to work with it. I would detach the loop so that you get the smooth side (buff) side on the outside of the sheath. It means more stitching but it looks better. Don't bother wet forming until you have sewn the sheath. Start out by folding the sheath after casing the leather then take the folded sheath and profile it on your sander so the sheath is symmetrical. then sew it up then wet mold it.
Great looking rig!! really nice job on everything. Im new and really enjoying your vids and style of presenting so many things I enjoy as well. God bless, and thanks for your time and effort.
Safety, safety, safety. Wear safety glasses when using your drill press NO MATTER WHAT YOU ARE DRILLING. Any power tool really. Eyes are irreplaceable. It is when you don't think it can happen, it does. Stay safe.
Really enjoying your channel. Want to either make some alterations to my Mora leather sheath or a new sheath if it doesnt work out. One is a fire steel holder like you have shown, two is a front pocket that would carry a small stone and maybe a Remington oil cloth sachet. Is that possible? Have you ever done it? Cheers Stu NZ
It is important to always wear a face mask when sanding leather. The dust will not leave the lungs. So too if one is sanding antlers or bone of any sort. Its serious busness. Nice product. Have found neatsfoot oil can go away much faster than some of the hide rejuvinator past products. Maybe use both? Anyway... Thanks for the video
Now we'd like to see your wife out in the woods starting a fire with your knife and commenting on the night while she carve some cheese or a steak whatever she's going to do with it maybe she's going to make some pointy sticks for roasting marshmallows nice video I really appreciate it I'm ready to make a few of those myself the drilling in the stitching that looks like tedious but worth it so beautiful job you did congratulations
Great work once again, I am new to leather work so I did not know why you cut a separate piece of leather for the fire steel instead of incorporating it into the pattern of the sheath and then you only have one side to sew down. Is there an advantage to using the separate peice of leather? In any case fantastic craftsmanship, the knife looks great too I may try using an old file.
Good question. I thought about that also. I think it probably came down to a few things. Making it separately may of allowed him to make it extra snug. Making the right angle corner cuts in leather, where the top corner matches the bottom corner, can be difficult to do free hand. Also, you can make the loop out of a spare bit of scrap leather. If you incorporate the loop into the pattern that you're cutting out you'll probably end up having a large void intruding into your remaining leather. I always try cutting my pattern as close to an edge as possible while fitting the pattern onto a section that doesn't leave dangly spare pieces hanging off my leather sheet, all while also avoiding scars, stains and creases already present in the leather.
Do you have a shopping list for what a beginner would use to make sheaths. I am a novice knife maker and well this is a natural addition to that, I'd love to start making something like this.
Thanks Joshua. The lights are strung all over the shop. We only move a few lights here and there but most are stationary. Gool old warm incandescent bulbs.
If you don’t have a 4 prog punch I use to use a fork it’s better than that Tandy roller marker and yes I also cut off the ends of another fork from the same set for the corner markers than I drilled out the holes and sewed it but the sheath you did is awesome
Question? Were did u learn 2 do all of this stuff (Craftsmanship), writer did a little of this in HS back in the 60’s, that was pretty much it. @ 72yrs.old writer is still working, R U or R U retired. UR explanation of what’s being done helps immensely. Is this just a HOBBY or UR job, just asking-David E. Thanks
Hey Dustin, I like your Chanel and love your knives. All the way out here from Cebu Philippines. But any chance you sell any of your knives? Would love to have one of your custom made knives.
hey! I love your videos I have a basic question I hope you can answer. what would be the best leather tool kit for a beginner with not a lot of money like around 40-45$ range? thanks I will be sure to like this video.
River Townsend Thanks so much for watching. I would recommend the basic hand stitching kit from Tandy Leather Factory (item# 11190-00). In the kit you will get the basic tools to help you stitch neatly, which in my opinion is the key to making a professional looking sheath that will last you a long time. If you wanted to get the minimum needed you could get by with just an awl, waxed Linen thread, rubber cement, and some tapestry needles. That's all I used for years. Good luck.
WOW! Nice work. To be honest, I'm not a leatherworker so I would have used my sewing machine for the stitching (it's a walking foot Consew). Why? No drilling, I may use different colors of polyester thread and the actual sewing goes fast and it looks uniform.
Just a hint for contact cement: apply to both surfaces with a very thin coat, then let both surfaces dry for several minutes. Once dry, press the surfaces together firmly. They will bond instantly and will require hardly any clamping.

@@prepperjonpnw6482 The hair ties are a great idea. The elastic I use looks just like them.
I'm just so fascinated by your skill in craftsmanship. Watching the video teaches me to be more patient and precise in measuring.

Hate the velcro and nylon junk. $150 knife and a $2 sheath so aggravating.
Nice 👍🏽

Ged Reilly,
No I didn't . Did you see what it was ?
Yeh, I noticed that too! Where do we get that? I have no dog!!
Get a dog. Best companion you can have. BOB
i'm homrless and have no resources {money} to support your channel, however, i want to thank you for your time and knowledge.
Thank you Ron. You comments mean a ton to our channel, keep them coming. 😁
You make this look so easy.
I like your idea, of the firesteel sheath, with, the knife sheath. I'm going to incoroporate it, into my next sheath, for my new, bone-handled knife.
Nice job ! For the firesteel loop, 'don't need to sand it for thickness, just put it back into the water and clamp it hard into the vise (more material = stronger) ;)
Nice film, thanks!!! 😇😊
I really enjoyed watching you create the sheath.

I’m looking forward to making one with a swinger for my Laplander.
Awesome work. Now I am off to make my own. Thank you
Real Craftmanship , and the riffs on the guitar was kicking goooooooooood play it again Art Craftsmanship :) Play it through your vedios please .

Great narration, enjoying learning how to do this while watching your videos. Thank you

leather color was to match the wooden handle of the knife

Great looking sheath. Idk if u know or not but if your leather is wet when u mark those stitch lines it marks a little bit easier
A wife that requests a loop fore a fire steel must be cool.

So did you glue up when the leather was wet?
How much do you sell the leather sheath and ferro rod loop holder for ??
may i ask why you made your stitching holes with a drill press?
It makes stitching a lot easier, although, I have switched to using a nail, instead of a drill bit, so the leather can self heal around the stitching.
Very nice work
