- In this video, we restore this pair vintage 1990's Doc Marten boots back to original condition. We use all original Dr. Marten parts, and we even fuse the sole onto the boot with FIRE...just like they do at the factory. We think these boots came out looking great! Time for another restoration!

Loved the fire portion but the whole video was fascinating. I am guessing that docs are less common in the US than they are here in Europe where they remain popular and are definitely not just worn by skinheads and punks, so I loved this. I am currently rocking a pair of docs Chelsea boots.

I made Doc Marten boot soles in the mid nineties at a moulding factory in Leicestershire, England. Good money too. A canadian bloke got the firm in debt so our factory got closed down and everything moved to France. Love the video you guys.

In the 90s I was stationed in England. Every year we had a Christmas Bazar in the hanger on base. I always volunteered to work at the Dr. Marten booth. I left England with 14 pair of Docs.

This was a great one! I bought my Doc's in '85 when I was stationed in England. I used them as duty boots so I had to dye the thread black. I used to wear them off duty too and without the yellow thread they were unique. Got a lot of compliments. I might have to dig them out of the attic!
I saw an Army Blackhawk pilot wearing Docs as duty boots around 1992. I complimented him on his choice. 😁

Had a pair of brown lowtop wingtips with the lugged sole. Loved those shoes. I walked at my HS graduation wearing them. Class of '91. Yes, feeling very nostalgic watching this wonderful restoration. Thank you, Brothers!!
Wore the dark burgandy Doc Martins boots at senior school in the early 70's in Southern England... bought back memories.. Great work guys...
Damn, I remember growing up in the early to mid 90's and seeing the punks with the bomberjackets and Dr. Martens and a boombox blaring Discharge, Motörhead, Ebba Grön or Anti Cimex. Always fascinated by the boots. Thanks for the throwback :) (sorry if my english isnt perfect, not my native tongue).

Actually they are not bomber jackets. they are Alpha MA-1 flight jackets but a lot of people make that mistake. Bomber jackets are the 3/4 length Brown leather jackets with a belt around the waist .

I was a child in the sixties and seventies and into the eighties into my late teens early twenties in the UK. back then these were the working class boot of choice for factory workers and police officers as they were cheap and comfortable.
The skinheads in the late sixties really started to turn them into a fashion statement, especially the oxblood ones and then came punk where they really took off as did the prices which slowly went up and up.
The end of the real quality for me went in the late nineties when DM started to farm out to China and other far eastern countries. I remember buying my last pair early this century made in China and they lasted a year. The insoles were compressed fibre board which disintegrated within a year and the soles soon followed.
I then changed to the still English made Solovair who used to make boots for DM ( it was in the early days a cooperative of Northampton factories all making un the DM brand.
The English made DM´s now are more fashion statements, the ones made out of the UK are like throwing good money down the drain. Now I stick to Solovair who use much higher quality leathers and a country mile better than DM´s
For my American fellows, Ian is referring the original skinheads - the real skins, not what skins are known as in the US.
The reason doc's are garbage is not because its made in china (don't forget most apple products are also from there). Its the fact that Doc's uses dogshit materials and cheap labour to max out their bottom line so they can burn money on marketing+sponsorships and let's forget to increase how much they can line their pockets.
Like you said wherever its made they're still garbage because that's what they're about.
@@seth_5394some people in the USA know and understand the history of the skinhead movement. The media kind of ruined it by exploiting the nazi thing in the late 80s - early 90s. Avg Joe un educated America totally associates it with that garbage. But there are some that know. I’m not into skinhead culture myself but the movement is sort of interesting to me. I do love Dr martens, Solovair and Gripfast though. Always liked the look.

@@Meloncholymadness Negative. OG skins were the opposite of racist. White English and black Jamaicans came together around shared love of music, dance, and culture. I don't know whether or not colors mattered in Britian, but outdated color meanings in the US may be what you're thinking.? I served in the military with a guy 20 years ago who was a (racist) skin and wore oxblood Docs, but I'm not sure if that's a coincidence or not.
I bought my Docs back in '94, and I'm amazed at the restoration job you were able top pull off here. Awesome stuff.
Just wish the Made-In-England ones were as cheap to buy now as they were in the 90s...

They were cheap cuz they weren't popular, seen as an ugly boot with bad association. Kinda funny how rehabilitated their image is now, and fucking yuppie people wear em who wanna feel edgy.
I bought my first pair of Doc Marten boots from an Army/Navy store ( Blackman's ) in Brick Lane ,London in 1970. They cost me thirty two and six. Which was the old currency of the UK. The modern equivalent of that is a half penny over £1.52. They were low top boots and i went on to buy a pair of high top ox blood boots that i two toned with flexs of black. :)
Thankyou so much for doing the Dk Martins, brought back so many memeries for me from the late 70s and through the 80s.I was in the shoe trade for 18 years. I went to night school twice a week, and then had day releace to go collage and got my btec in shoe manufacture after some 5 years. Our factory was right next to John Whites in lime street Rushden, in Oak street. We made a shoe called Pods which was also very popular at that time. And the shoe trade was very big in Northamptonshire, before the cheap inports killed it off. At one point it was cheaper for us to mould our own soles for the shoes, cut out all the uppers etc, box them up and ship it to Portugal to be put together as a finished shoe, and then shipped back again. And this was still cheaper to do than making them with our own labour in the factory. We did this to 10,000 pairs before we ceased manufature of the shoe. Funny thing is when we did, Dc Martins were looking to increase production of thier boots, so we just ceased, and the people we employed (some 120) carried on as John White employies, so no one lost their job.
Where I live in Northampton there were 3 doc's factorys, I live in a little place called finedon. And my girlfriend worked there, she did the resoles and repairs. They're all gone now, sad times 😩
Quite sad to see so many shoe factories over there closed down.
Cheap Asian production obviously more tempting than history and quality. Strangely one of my good friends was also one of the last people in a lot of factories, he was stripping down the machines to be shipped overseas. Said it was gutting.

Loved this video. I'm really surprised those gummy soles sanded down that well. I know people bag on Doc Martens, but they were hard to beat for going to rock clubs in the 80's/90's. They had enough squish to stand for hours, souls that resisted the glass, beer and unthinkables of a club floor, plus they always looked good.
Fantastic video as always. I too fell in love with Docs and owned many over the years. Never had their soles wear out! Only the leather. What a product.

WOW, what a good job! I think they look even better with that sole. Appreciate that you used only original parts. I started wearing Docs in the ninetees and never stopped since. now i have a collection of 30 Martens, some of them 40 years old. 5 years ago started repairing them for me and for friends but getting your fingers on an original sole is really hard, thats true.

Never been a fan of the brand, but it was interesting to see how they're done. The workmanship to bring them back is your usual top-shelf effort. Definitely brought new life to them.
I'm more a London Undergrounds than a Doc's Guy. Mine are now 25 years old, with the 5th sole on it. But they still hold on...

Tremendous amount of work, beautiful results. I still have an old pair of Doc's, once that lug sole starts to wear down you have all the traction of ball bearings! Another great video!
Always been a fan, bought my first pair in 1975, for work, they did not fare to well in the welding shop...got my last pair 2020, still love them.
I still have my original 9349s that I bought when I was 15 years old and I'm now 38. They are in pretty great shape! I should get them back to 100% and start wearing again. They definitely bring back memories.

Great video guys. Just a few days ago I bought myself a pair of the ox blood shoes after 40 years when i wore the boots as a young man . How time flies.
Wore eight-eyelet docs for summer motorcycling in the 'eighties and 'nineties. Loved them! I went through several pairs and sadly threw them away when the soles wore smooth. So wish I'd kept them and had them restored.
Dr. Marten’s and silver tabs, I remember the days well. Always wore the 6 or 7 hole brown boots and I loved those shoes. My brother had all of the guys in his wedding party wear Dr. Martens. Great video!

I got my pair of Dr Martins in the mid 90s also aged 15 I also had a pair of black low top boots. Wore them for school the entire year. Loved them.
That was fantastic as usual. Down here in Australia in the 70's and early 80's they were the boot of choice of the local 'Skinhead' gangs so no one was game to wear them. In the 90's they become a fashion boot with teenagers and school kids. Quality boots, made to last.

I still have one pair of 90s MIE Dr Martens in storage. They are like museum pieces for me. And yep--they are so very much better than the current MIEs!
Beckmans and a pair of Oak Streets are now my go-to boots. Still, I occasionally don a couple pairs of current MIE Docs for nostalgia's sake. Ahhh, the beautiful days of my youth.

You can also source new soles from Solovair. Technically they aren't DM parts, but they're made exactly the same way as the vintage ones.
Good morning guys. Cool restoration on these Docs. I used to wear brown Docs for work back in the '90's and if I wore them long enough the soles would start to separate. I also had one nice pair of burgundy Docs.(which I foolishly sold at a garage sale a few years back) The boots that I had always had the lug soles. The soles on these boots were usually used on their shoes back in the day. It was always a challenge trying to keep that yellow stitching clean and replacing the laces with OG Dr. Martens laces.😆
Man this video was too cool. I’ve always wanted a pair re stiched with white or silver like Solovair. But not bad enough to send them off. I had no idea you could cut the souls off with exacto knife. This was a pleasure to watch. It looks so easy.

My 20+ year old Docs suffered a serious crack across one of their souls (yeah.... I mean "soul" not "sole") and after being told locally that the original parts are not available for replacement, came across this video. These boots have seen so many shows, Iron Maiden, Ozzy, Metallica, WASP, etc..) that I can't let them die. Thank you for giving me hope they can continue to live and be right.

I've been waiting to see someone do this. Only person I've seen who did this with original parts on UA-cam was The Key Cobbler, who does DM resoles as a major part of his business. I've never seen a resole that also used the heat sealing method, only cement

I would love to send you my Docs. I bought them when I was 16 in 1987 and I still have them. The insole is a little hard and the soles are a bit worn hear and there bu the uppers are in excellent condition. I wore those things through NY winters and night clubs. You guys work miracles.

I started wearing doc's in the 70's and still wear them today
I am not of the Doc Marten generation, but my young cousin wore them. Her grandmother was horrified. I don't know if you had Greb Kodiak work boots in the US, but these were really popular in Canada in the 70's and I wore them throughout college. I loved those boots. Now that I am retired, I seldom wear my AE shoes and have taken to wearing cowboy and work boots a lot. I guess you can take the boy from the farm, but you can't take the farm from the boy. Another excellent video, BTW.

I used to own a pair of 8 hole black boots I bought in the late 80's, the stitching wasn't yellow on the pair I bought, and yes, they were original Doc's. I was a Chef for a lot of years, tried wearing my Doc's in the kitchen, the soles ended up cracking really badly after 6 months, and they weren't very "grippy" in greasy floored conditions, but, other than that, extremely comfortable. They make anti slip now for working in kitchens
I worked at R Griggs and Co in the mid 90s making DM's and my job was sealing the sole to the shoes and we used a sealing machine that had a red hot metal blade that ran between the sole and the welt and melted to 2 together.
