- E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial is a 1982 American science fiction fantasy film co-produced and directed by Steven Spielberg, and written by Melissa Mathison. It features special effects by Carlo Rambaldi and Dennis Muren, and stars Henry Thomas, Dee Wallace, Robert MacNaughton, Drew Barrymore, Peter Coyote and Pat Welsh. It tells the story of Elliott (Thomas), a lonely boy who befriends an extraterrestrial, dubbed "E.T.", who is stranded on Earth. Elliott and his siblings help E.T. return home while attempting to keep him hidden from their mother and the government.
The concept was based on an imaginary friend Spielberg created after his parents' divorce in 1960. In 1980, Spielberg met Mathison and developed a new story from the stalled sci-fi horror film project Night Skies. It was filmed from September to December 1981 in California on a budget of US$10.5 million. Unlike most films, it was shot in rough chronological order, to facilitate convincing emotional performances from the young cast.
Released on June 11, 1982, by Universal Pictures, E.T was an immediate blockbuster, surpassing Star Wars to become the highest-grossing film of all time-a record it held for eleven years until Jurassic Park, another Spielberg-directed film surpassed it in 1993. It is the highest-grossing film of the 1980s. Appearing in Time's All-TIME 100 Movies, as well as the American Film Institute's original and updated lists of the best American films, critics acclaimed it as a timeless story of friendship, and it ranks as the greatest science fiction film ever made in a Rotten Tomatoes survey. In 1994, it was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". It was re-released in 1985, and then again in 2002 to celebrate its 20th anniversary, with altered shots and additional scenes.

This is insanely nostalgic to me. I used to see this ad all the time when I watched the grinch growing up.
I used to be terrified of E.T. and it started with this trailer on my Shrek VHS. Something about the CGI version especially freaked me out.
I think I remember back in 2002 this trailer was shown before Ice Age & Spider-Man in theaters. Honestly, this trailer was terrifying because of the CGI version of E.T.
When I saw this on my Shrek VHS when I was a kid, it scared the shit out of me!

Spielberg promised never to digitally alter any of his movies again, so if it does get re-released, at least it will be the original version, and not the 20th anniversary edition.

My grandma took me to see this in 2002 for it's anniversary release I was 7 years old. My first time ever seeing the movie. Today my local theatre played it as part of it's retro releases and I took her to see it, 22 years later. It was a great feeling.

0:27 The original puppet is shown in the closet, even though, in the 20th anniversary edition, it had the CGI version in that scene. I guess they weren't done "fixing" the movie when this trailer was made.
Don't know why you put "fix" in quotes. I prefer the term "touch-up".
I recently watched the 40th year anniversary re-release on IMAX back in summer 2022. Great anniversary re-release.

At least Spielberg has admitted that this version of E.T. was a mistake and decided to ditch it entirely and gave us the option to watch the original theatrical version with the 20th Anniversary DVD release, unlike a good friend of his with another Sci-Fi classic. (Cough cough… George Lucas. Cough cough… Star Wars Special Edition.)

Look I know many people hated the CGi version of E.T. And it scared the fuck out of me as a kid, but I don’t think it was that bad. Frankly I liked cgi E.T. I felt like he was more expressive and articulate in comparison to the puppet, and Spielberg made this choice to please the perfectionist within him, sure he regretted it, but in my opinion I don’t think there was much to regret, the film is the same, just with a cgi splash, it’s not overwhelming, it’s just different and while I’m not insulting the original fans of the 1982 film, I seriously think there shouldn’t be this much hate. I love the 20th anniversary, and I want to at least know there are some people out there who do who aren’t just being part of the crowd. I love both versions of this amazing movie. And I revere Spielberg for what he did.
He also fixed the scene of Elliot flying against the moon, where we finally see the cloak flying behind him.
This movie still made me cry 😭😭😭

This trailer scared the shit outta me when I was 3, and I'm not sure why. I think that it was in the intro for Shrek, and it made me hate E.T.

I kinda like the CGI in this movie but yes compared to stuff like Jurassic Park it isn’t that great
But I wouldn’t call it bad……..This 2002 version could’ve been better if they added animatronics to this version along with improving the CGI Alf it of course
And he's now in terrible unnecessary CGI!
