It’s so nice to see a guitarist who can strum just like Keith! I’ve seen so many other guitarist from UA-cam video to cover bands and they all seem so lifeless they just play in the pocket but what they forget is that it was Keith’s impeccable sense of groove which gave the band their edge. Well done👍
'Just watched a load of UA-cam videos on this very special song and this is, in my opinion, is the best explained and most comprehensive of all of them - (You mentioned the drums - I believe it was producer Jimmy Miller that played drums on the studio version of this for some reason - the drum part is equally interesting and still captured Charlie's special feel really well - I think he played on Shine a Light too). Thank You James James, it's been a great evening learning all the parts and embellishments....now to try to remember them all next time we play it live!
Honestly, the chord structure is pretty similar to the way I've played it in the past in open G, Capo on the 6th. Once again, you've gone to show that you really have a great ear for capturing the studio magic. Great job as always!
Love your lessons, your music taste, and your guitars!!! Great playing, too! And congrats on turning the big 50 this year, or so I calculate from your video comments.
I sold an MIJ, Orville by Gibson , hummingbird acoustic with a P90 in it, to a guy in WA , biggest mistake I ever made. I always rate your lessons and demos very highly. This is exemplorary, and I cry about the gibbo, and your advice re: buying one , is well founded. Congrats
James James dang, I’ve been missing out. I’m glad I subbed to this channel. I like what you said about strumming. I totally agree, and though we come from a time where your best tutorial came from listening to vinyls, there is a great opportunity via UA-cam to connect with guitar players who have great taste in music such as yourself. Thanks again for another awesome video.
It is the strumming most importantly, but thanks for showing a couple of those extra cord sounds that other tuts don't show! Cuz as soon as you played then I thought yes, that's in there, glad you pointed it out. Great ear
JJ, little tip for ya if you’re ever in Chicago. There is a stones tribute band here called “Rocks Off” they’re absolutely killer. Look em up online and you can see some video clips. I see em every chance I get. They often play on the south side and in south suburbs. Thanks for another Stones lesson. Rock on 🤘🏻🎸
I remember learning this way from you years ago, then you laid the open g (capo at 5th) version on us and it just stuck. I might have to go back to this version. It's a lot fuller.
I think producer Jimmy Miller drummed on this one. he also did on Happy from Exile. I twiddled around with this and found on the chorus " when you try sometimes.." the second fret and then fifth fret, you can play the fifth fret chord barre with ring finger tip, just covering 6,5, and 4 strings 3rd string muted but the 1 and 2 strings open, kinda sounds good; more open. also came up with some thing cool on the bridge, if interested I could let you know. Ü ♫
You have some beautiful acoustics. Always wanted a Bird or Dove....or a J-200, Nick Lucas, Country & Western, J-160e, Southern Jumbo...I do have a Songwriter though. A local Gibson dealer tells me that I wouldn't like the newer"vintage" Hummingbird models because of playability issues but I wouldn't mind finding out ! I like the tone of them
Strangely, I struggled with the strumming pattern when I tried to play this, kinda unusual, because Rolling Stones songs are usually pretty obvious in terms of strumming. Finally figured it out, sounds so beautiful for such little work, Keith Richards at his finest.
Love your work - was wondering if you checked out Jon MacLennan's analysis of acoustic guitar tuning for "You Can’t Always Get What You Want”. He says it's tuned to C6 (G6, capo on 5th) with 6 strings on a 12 string guitar. I tried his way on a 6 string with no doubled high e and it seems close. Given your great ear, was interested if you think he could be right. Fyi - he says - remove the e string and all the high/doubled strings, except for the high e "So it would be tuned from the A string down GDGBEE then capo it on the 5th fret so it becomes CGCEAA."
That would be an awfully exotic tuning for Keith. And I have doubts that he’d use that tuning just for one song and never again. He was using plenty of open D and E around Let it Bleed period, so that makes sense to me. But I’m known to get it totally wrong sometimes. :)
"Here Hear" for what others say about you JJ, You really make life so much easier for us struggling guitarists to learn songs such as this, which was not yet on my list to learn but came across your above video and just had to pick up my Epi 200SCE and give it a shot. Wonderful and take care and hope you are getting better and that 2019 will be good for you. Michael -Sydney-Australia Jan 2019
What year is that Hummingbird? You probably mention that in another video. I'm considering a Hummingbird, Dove, J-200, or J-45 but have heard about Gibson's quality issues. I'm not sure if I should avoid certain years. Yeah, I will try them out first.
I am wondering if Mick wrote the song playing the lick like your brother said it was. Playing it that way is very similar to 'Moonlight Mile" which he also wrote and he usually plays really similar stuff.
Pliz guyz help me, i have big question making my life hell, when you guys learn how to play a song with guitare, do you strum like how you feel the song or you figure it out some pattern strumming ? Pliz help me
@@jamesjames9275 thanks a lot for your answer mister james, as you said in the tutorial, strumming make my life so hard as a guitare player ahah, learning alone since i started by the way if you can get me some more tips about strumming i will apreciate it a lol also i just wanna say that when you played this song with the playback on IT WAS "fucking hell " AWESOME i just saw myslef with a smile in my face, nice performance !!!
This needs a “love” button on youtube - thank you JJ wherever you are.
The coolest neighbor😂
Just pure joy listening to you, let alone being able to play it ...
Gibson sure knows how to do a burst!

You nailed that song! Thanks so much James. I knew if I looked up this song if you had it I'd be able to learn it from you.

Beautiful
What is it about open tunings (especially Keith's) that just hit the spot?!
Almost spiritual their effect on me

Wouldn't C be a capo on 5th fret??
Love your lessons, your music taste, and your guitars!!! Great playing, too! And congrats on turning the big 50 this year, or so I calculate from your video comments.
Come on back JJ we NEED you!
I just noticed you coment/request. Didn't realize he wasn't posting any longer. Any idea what happened?

That Gibson sounds incredible man
Hummingbird is awesome.
Another Great One...........................
Sounds cool with my split top Taylor buzz!
Love it, such a fun one to play. Thanks for doing this, i never picked up on some of the 7th chords.
I don’t think I’ve heard you play this hummingbird yet. Sounds fantastic!
Seriously? I’ve probably posted a couple hundred videos with it.

Just wanted to drop by and say your videos are very helpful and inspiring to keep on playing! Thanks man! Having a lot of fun with this one :)

I have a Bird that's about 10 years old... Everybody that plays has a fit over it.
Thank you for this brother. I’m having so much fun learning this on quarantine 😄🤞🏻 take care stay safe. Thanks from Brasil

Music for the people

Good job again. I think in the D-F progression, he plays the F close to the Capo (with 020120) but somebody probably said that already. Thanks !
I've always done G with a capo at 5, which way was it done for the record?
It was done like this for the record. He didn't really start using open G in earnest until after Let it Bleed.

I swear I kept hearing the French horn part as you were strumming the intro for the lesson. Weird how the brain works (at least mine.)
I did too as I was reading your coment and listening
Awesome
Is that a crack on the Hummingbird directly up from the bridge? Or war wound?
Scratch in the finish, not a crack.
Are you tuned to open E? thanks, tom
love Hummingbird
Nice! Thanks!

cool shirt...….
Good :)
what easy peazy🙂

Hopefully, they're both the same thing. If you practice, you'll get to the point where you're feeling the song with the right rhythm.

If you're capo'd at the eighth fret and the guitar is tuned to open E, then the resulting open chord is a C maj? Is that correct?
Yes.
C F G ????
The best song ever recorded in my opinion
what is up with your bridge? it looks to be modified.
No, just factory spec.
Oh, I see what you mean. Yeah, it's shaped a little differently toward the high strings. I've had these on a few acoustic guitars.
Better than Keith
👍 🎸😊😜😱
What's note open E ?
is that a orange amp in the background?
Hand-built by my brother Joe Carson (check out his UA-cam channel!).
thats pretty cool, and i will check out his channel
check out this guy's video on this subject: ua-cam.com/video/WYH8M-XfeWc/v-deo.html
didn't you play it in open G
I've posted it in open G (like the live versions) and in open E.
Why he keeps counting the frets after years of playing ??😅
I don’t view the fretboard in terms of numbers. I only consider which fret it is when I teach something.
