Missed you, Josh. I don't normally watch poll videos along with unboxings and reaction videos (boring!) but I really enjoyed your presentation. You made it great fun, and for the most part I agreed with the results! Can't wait for Abominable Snowmen! Many thanks. XX
Okay, if they ever make an episode showing a young version of the first Doctor (or whatever number he is if you count all the timeless children)...Josh Snares should get the job. You've already got the costume and a far better understanding of the character than most of the NuWho team.
I rewatched Ice Warriors recently and was surprised at how much more I enjoyed the story, especially the animation. It looks quite basic, but I forgot it was animation after a while, which was a good sign.
You made me crack the heck up when you said "The Macra do not exist!" A great callback to your missing episodes series, and the intro for this one is spot-on to the original. This was a great video. I'm only sad I didn't know about the poll, though I couldn't have voted in it, anyways. I haven't seen any of them. Thank you for the best laugh I've had in a hot minute!
My mate and I watched ‘Evil of the Daleks’ in its entirety the other night. It was a blast! Lots to spot in the backgrounds too. Although I was a Who fan before the original aired I have no memories of seeing it on TV strangely.
Amazing work, as usual, and the "telesnap" reconstruction midway gave me a welcome laugh! Bring on the Myth Makers! And can we get the Daleks' Masterplan while we're at it?
Yes, Macra Terror is absolutely my favourite animation, it's a perfect length (as you said) and the flow was just amazing, it kept to the original story while also adding tweaks to enhance the story quality. I always find myself going back to it if I need a Troughton fix (which is often, he's my favourite Doctor).
I love the recent missing episode animations but it feels like it's getting more advertising than the upcoming series 13?? Can't wait to see what will be animated next though!
I’m a huge fan of Cosgrove Hall animation. I feel that they should have been allowed to continue, would have been great Maybe a special edition with Zoe’s catsuit would be nice
Given the BBC are guaranteed money from their Mafia bully boy tactics, money for such a flagship show should’ve been an issue! But hey…gotta pay that prick Lineker!
Just found this, Great video! And thanks for the kind words about Macra Terror. I work at Sun & Moon and we really tried to give that story every bit of love the director would let us.
Out of the episodes that have not had the animation treatment, I would love to see Marco Polo, the Highlanders or the celestial toymaker, hopefully one day all of the missing episodes will have their animations
The thing I love most about your videos is how into it you are and the quality of production. And then there's that first Doctor costume - you won me over in a double-heartbeat!
I absolutely agree on the Web of Fear stuff. 3D has huge potential if the work is put in: better animation, fewer cut elements (ie. stuff like the outfit changes in Macra), and a feel closer to the source material. Web's animation falls short through, I suspect, a severe lack of time and budget. Little effort has been put into properly mimicking the look of 2D animation, the likenesses look like a first draft, and several animations look like they had the bare minimum of clean-up work done on them before they were shoved out the door (wiggling arms, models sticking into one another, etc.)
Here’s how I’d rank them even though some of them I’ve not seen in ages: 1. Evil Of The Daleks 2. Macra Terror 3. The Moonbase 4. The Invasion 5. The Faceless Ones 6. The Tenth Planet 7. Shada 8. 2020 Power 9. Fury From The Deep 10. The Ice Warriors 11. Reign Of Terror 12. 2016 Power 13. Web Of Fear
Another great video, Josh! My two favorites are The Moonbase and Macra Terror, good stuff. Don’t feel bad about wanting Myth Makers, I have this nonsensical desire for Space Pirates to be animated, though it could just be because I love me some Bob Holmes.
It's always surprised me how highly the animated epidodes of 'The Invasion' are ranked amongst fans. I remember finding them below par, even with the DVD was first released. Nothing comes close to 'The Moonbase,' and 'The Macra Terror' for me, for lots of reasons but most importantly, they capture the likeness of Patrick Troughton perfectly, which none of the others do.
The Macra Terror is a good one. Really good animation and a good story. I love Shada... Im not bothered how many other people like it or if people hate it. LOL. Douglas Adams just has a way of writing. I find the same with Mark Gatis, you know when its one of his episodes of Who.
I’m excited to see how good the Evil animation is. It’s not out in Canada until mid-November and I decided to wait. But just listening to it it was always one of my favourites despite the length (like you I usually prefer the shorter ones because there’s less filler). Great video and good to see you back!
I'm watching this in 2024 so it's kind of funny to hear you excited for Galaxy 4 and "the heavily rumoured Abominable Snowmen animation" because both of those are out now. I really like the Abominable Snowmen. and I love the options to watch with the surviving episodes, or the black and white animation and then the coloured animation, love this.
Yes to "animate The Myth Makers"! I haven't watched The Evil of the Daleks yet, but I'm definitely excited now. Great video, as always. You do such a geat job balancing information and comedy; balancing poll results and your own feelings. You're so charismatic and I love this First Doctor costume for you!
Josh, you are a true Whovian. Dont worry, as long as we Whovians continue to buy animated episodes of the missing stories, they will continue to make them. My Top 5 stories that i am waiting for to be animated: 5) Marco Polo. 4) The Celestial Toymaker 3) The Wheel In Space 2) The Crusade 1) Mission to the Unknown/The Daleks Masterplan
You dressed as the First Doctor, I can totally see him going "What are you, a cop?" I get that 2D animation takes longer, but geez, you can put a little more effort into it. You're recreating lost episodes! That's amazing, take pride in it
Great video! I kind of agree with your Shad’s assessment. I feel it so obsessed over because it’s a “lost” Douglas adam’s. But that era is long gone. I think people will never find what they hope to in it! But let’s see how the six part plays. Anything has to be better than that kind of dull movie version!
I just realised, when Josh did his "There are no Macra" speech, you can see what appears to be two lights reflected in both his eyes. The eyes of Macra?
Been watching Classic Who for the first time and just got to season 2. Ive only seen the missing episode Reign of Terror animation but really enjoyed it. Thought the facial expressions were great :).
Anyone who wants The Myth Makers animated is a friend of mine! I love that one and it's got some quite funny bits too. And The Underwater Menace! My fav animation is probably The Invasion and not for sentimental reasons. I really like the quality, and it's helped by long scenes where no actor is on screen. A truck on the road, a motorcycle at night, that sort of thing. Daleks are easy to do. No expressions, rudimentary movement, everything expressive is on the soundtrack. That's easier to animate than Troughton's mercurial facial expressions, which no on can quite do. They do a good job with Jamie in The Invasion, and Zoe is precious and very acceptably done. It also matters whether you're watching the animation to be an entire animated story, or whether you're watching it to fill the gaps of the missing episodes, to watch the existing ones and the animated versions for the missing ones. It works very well in that service. Another interesting question, since most of the animations exist in both colour and B&W versions, is which is better. I love the B&W era and go into it thinking that they ought to be watched in B&W. But in my experience several of the animated stories look so much better in colour! The Macra Terror is an example, and (since I'm writing months after this vid was posted I can add) Galaxy 4.
I've been going through the Patrick Troughton era of Doctor Who and when I get to the Web Of Fear I'll probably just watch the updated telesnap of episode 3 instead of the animation
I predicted evil would be on top, not neccesarily because it looked great, but because it just released less than a month ago. There's still some leftover hype for it
Thanks as always, Josh, informative, exciting, world class presentation, and as ever, bags of charisma for one of the best presenters on the planet. TV companies across the globe are missing a star. Keep doing what you do. 👍😎💥
I worked on the Power of the Daleks animation. I have to admit that even 6 years on, I've never watched it. The potential was there because everyone worked as hard as possible, but working 20 hours a day in the last month burnt everyone out and ultimately it got that quality control failure on it because of the desperate short cuts in the last weeks. The time where it should have been honed and fixed was instead the time in which things were rushed for the sake of the deadline. There were some bad choices in terms of some character designs early on that didn't bode well either. Ultimately it was much less than the some of its parts. Also I guess the dogged adherence to the camera script made it more complex than it needed to be. Animation is its own beast and should have been storyboarded with that in mind - it would have worked much better - and really who actually cares that it was released on its anniversary? - it could have been announced on it's anniversary and released six weeks later for Christmas and allowed the breathing room for a better product. So, yeah, I'm very (very) familiar with the story, the sets and the dialogue, but I have never sat and watched the animation because it's just not the the product I'd hoped I was working on. It has some good scenes for sure, Rob Ritchie's Dalek sequences are exemplary, but much of it is too frustrating to be bearable. Ten minutes into episode one I started skipping chapters, always to be confronted by another disappointing example of the 'it'll do' approach in the next scene. The assets were there for a considerably better effort but it just doesn't capture that atmosphere of the story - and it is one of the most important stories in Dr Who's history, it needed a realistic timeframe for completion. The team did a much better job with Macra - but changing the design of the creatures wasn't necessary in my opinion, and it's a story that looks better in B/W.
Thank you so much for the insight, Daryl! It is really upsetting when the higher ups get in the way of the creative process. I rewatched the special edition last night, funnily enough, and found it to be quite enjoyable still! It’s an impressive production on such short notice. I rarely, if ever, watch my own work, so I can relate!
Heyyyyy, Josh! We haven't seen you for a while. How's life in these times of horror? :-) How has everyone already seen Evil of the Daleks? I had to pre-order it and it's not out on DVD until next month. I have faith that, eventually, the BBC will release animated versions of all the missing episodes, but how good they are will come down to the quality of the animation itself and which studio the BBC hires for the job. Still holding out for Marco Polo, though. I really want to see those costumes in colour!
Great video Josh. Nice idea with the fun facts. I haven't seen much of the animations before. I'd just wait for the Collection Boxsets to be honest. Is there any chance of a "BIG DOCTOR WHO POLLLL" for the modern era? Please.
I think that these episodes deserved the animation that The Adventures of Tintin had in the 90s,that style of animation would have fit with the Doctor perfectly
I personally prefer the LC reconstructions. Yes, it's only still images that occasionally get shifted around, but I fell it's a more authentic experience as they're actually photos from the real episodes.
I’m so glad they did Evil of the Daleks justice. When I did the Troughton era during my marathon (I’m currently stuck in the 1970s), I found Evil to be a bit… meh. Good ideas, but it dragged. I did acknowledge that in general I found telesnap episodes to be less interesting, but I still didn’t enjoy it that much. Power of the Daleks, on the other hand… now that was a story I loved. The slow burn, the inexorable build-up to an inevitable bloodbath at the climax… I could look past the slightly shoddy animation because I’d found one of my favourite Who stories. I’d taken a break from my Doctor Who marathon, until recently. I’d taken a break from the show entirely for about a year - everything gets a tad stale eventually. I read somewhere that Evil of the Daleks had finally been animated, and was intrigued by the rave reviews it seemed to be getting. After haggling with the iTunes Store, I downloaded it and started watching. I watched it all in one sitting. It did not feel like nearly three hours. Not at all. Wonderful. All I needed was something to watch, something to see, a TV program instead of a slideshow. I’d still rank Power over Evil, but only just. Now Evil is comfortably one of my favourite stories of the Troughton era. I’m so glad they properly did it justice. It’s visually stunning.
My quibble with The Macra Terror is them cutting out the cleaning scene due to the cast changing costumes was too much for the animators to handle. I suppose the scene doesn't mean much to the story but I don't want cuts like that. If the BBC makes deadlines too tough, tell them to forget it. I hope they eventually do The Dalek Master Plan, The Celestial Toymaker and The Wheel in Space. I watch (or DVR) the animated stories on BBC America.
OMG SOOOOOO glad 'Evil of the Daleks' got NUMBER 1!!!!! 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍 I've just managed to catch up on some of the more recent animations via AMC+ (although sadly they do not have 'The Ice Warriors', 'Web of Fear' or 'Galaxy 4' so still more searching to fully catch up 😵😅). 'Macra Terror' I had already seen but not 'The Faceless Ones', 'Evil of the Daleks' or 'Fury From the Deep' so I binged them all in broadcast order so first 'Faceless Ones' then 'Evil of the Daleks' and finally 'Fury From the Deep'... Then found myself rewatching 'Evil of the Daleks'... And then found myself rewatching it AGAIN... And then AGAIN... I've watched this same story now FOUR TIMES OVER and it sticks so firmly in my skull that I doubt that I'll be done rewatching this story anytime soon! 😅😍😁 I've NEVER rewatched a Classic Who serial this often nor this quickly, I am just frankly IN LOVE with this story and hats off to Big Finish Animations for their work on it...they really did just an AMAZING job, everything about this story looks sooooo beautiful and the music...mmmmm that music, Dudley Simpson simply created a masterpiece of a soundtrack with cues so memorable that one could well find oneself humming something like the 'Dalek March' from the cliffhanger of Episode 1 and no dialogue would be needed...you can see the scene in your mind just from that cue ALONE...😍♥️💞 'Evil of the Daleks' is now my Number 2 favorite serial, just behind 'Caves of Androzani' and is the first animated recon to make my personal Top 5, that's how good this is. Fast fact for YOU, Mr. Snares: One, animation credit for 'The Faceless Ones', 'Evil of the Daleks' and 'Fury From the Deep' ACTUALLY goes to Big Finish Animation. It's actually ON the end credits on all of those episodes. Who is Big Finish Animations? Well... remember Planet 55 Studios? The ones who did 'The Tenth Planet' and 'The Reign of Terror'? Well, they didn't just disappear into the sunset... evidentially, somewhere along the way it seems Planet 55 got bought out and it seems they were bought out by Big Finish, well known for their widely acclaimed audio adventures. So, Big Finish Animations IS the studio formally known as Planet 55 Studios, so basically it's been Planet 55 that's been bringing us several of these more recent animations. They clearly learned a thing or two from their earlier efforts and having the added budget and time provided thanks to the partnership with BBC America have now been able to bring us some of the most amazing animations to come about recently...including my most favorite of all, 'Evil of the Daleks'. Truly awesome stuff...☺️😁 Until next time...ALLONS-Y!
@@JoshSnares Don't get me wrong, I got Marco Polo (colour and B&W) on a blank DVD disc in a case with custom artwork, but that won't stop me getting those desert splatter discs!
Here is my ranking at the moment (it has been a while since I last saw the Invasion animation though): 13) The Web of Fear 12) The Reign of Terror 11) Power 2016 10) The Ice Warrior 9) The Tenth Planet 8) Fury from the Deep 7) The Invasion 6) Shada 5) Power of the Daleks Special Edition 4) The Faceless Ones 3) The Moonbase 2/1) The Macra Terror/The Evil of the Daleks (can’t pick) PS: I would honestly love to see the Myth Makers aswell 😂 An underrated one although I hate the ending
@Karly 💗 If time and money is a factor. Obviously no one cares if Feast of Steven is forever lost. So that's one less episode to animate. But just slotting the remake of Mission to the Unknown at the beginning of the story wouldn't be the worst thing in the world.
I’m a big fan personally of the Planet 55 animation artwork style and would put those three near the top. Especially The Reign of Terror; it’s great that a historical story was given the investment despite having a more limited appeal. I’m sad that this company won’t be making more stories; I think their style would work great for say, The Massacre, and yes, The Myth Makers! That said, I’m so happy to have any animated reconstructions at all and I will buy absolutely anything! Even The Space Pirates. The downside is that US versions of these take so long to be released. Sometimes we have to wait a whole year longer than the UK consumers to buy the US region versions, which makes me sad (and impatient). Are these animated stories available to watch on BBC America? You seem to suggest that; can anyone confirm this? That would be worth a subscription to me, to bide my time until the actual disc releases.
Do they announce when the broadcast the animations on BBC America or have I just not been paying attention?. You get the latest series announcements all the time but I don't remember them ever saying "Time To Watch The Animation, Kids!"

Gotta say again your videos are amazing. So well produced and edited and your presentation is so fun. Keep it up!
Good fun as always! I agree with most of your rankings.
This was very entertaining and well done
Heyyyyy, Josh! We haven't seen you for a while. How's life in these times of horror? :-) How has everyone already seen Evil of the Daleks? I had to pre-order it and it's not out on DVD until next month. I have faith that, eventually, the BBC will release animated versions of all the missing episodes, but how good they are will come down to the quality of the animation itself and which studio the BBC hires for the job. Still holding out for Marco Polo, though. I really want to see those costumes in colour!
Would LOVE to see Marco Polo!
It’s been out in the Uk for a few weeks now, north america gets it next month
Marco Polo would be on my list of finding the original episodes.
@@BobaTennant that explains it. Australia is always the last to get anything, sadly. 😔
@@ksaunders4362 actually nah, australia gets collection sets before north america
your hair is just amazing here , almost as good as the video itself
Great video Josh. Nice idea with the fun facts. I haven't seen much of the animations before. I'd just wait for the Collection Boxsets to be honest.
Is there any chance of a "BIG DOCTOR WHO POLLLL" for the modern era? Please.
Ahhhhhh _Josh Snares_ ...... I needed this. :)
Love the Macra impersonation! can you also do the crawling all over you bit? hahah! nice video!
😂
9:00 oh no i’ve been exposed as a GallifreyBase user
Great video as always
😂😂
Finally you are back!!
Yeah- I'm just waiting for the collection box set for all these
"what are you, a cop?" MASSIVE LOL 😛. awesome video as always
💕💕
Great video as usual Josh. Love the humour.
look at 8:18 where josh jsut pretends if his shada ranking was from the bbc and lost but he reconstructed it XD :D
The Daleks Master Plan would be impressive!
14:37 I thought that the Dalek’s Master Plan was your favourite story? 😜
I am constantly changing my mind, I am inconsistent, I am flawed!! 😂
I want the daleks master plan to be reanimated
The special edition of Power of the Daleks still hasn’t been released in the US
My quibble with The Macra Terror is them cutting out the cleaning scene due to the cast changing costumes was too much for the animators to handle.
JOSH YOUR HAIR IS SOOOOOOOOOOO FABULOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
OMG SOOOOOO glad 'Evil of the Daleks' got NUMBER 1!!!!! 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
I've just managed to catch up on some of the more recent animations via AMC+ (although sadly they do not have 'The Ice Warriors', 'Web of Fear' or 'Galaxy 4' so still more searching to fully catch up 😵😅).
😅😍😁 I've NEVER rewatched a Classic Who serial this often nor this quickly, I am just frankly IN LOVE with this story and hats off to Big Finish Animations for their work on it...they really did just an AMAZING job, everything about this story looks sooooo beautiful and the music...mmmmm that music, Dudley Simpson simply created a masterpiece of a soundtrack with cues so memorable that one could well find oneself humming something like the 'Dalek March' from the cliffhanger of Episode 1 and no dialogue would be needed...you can see the scene in your mind just from that cue ALONE...😍♥️💞
'Evil of the Daleks' is now my Number 2 favorite serial, just behind 'Caves of Androzani' and is the first animated recon to make my personal Top 5, that's how good this is.
Truly awesome stuff...☺️😁
Until next time...ALLONS-Y!
Imagine thinking Macra exist lmao
Macra don't exist
They should televise these on the ABC!
Would love to see the Myth Makers animated honestly
In the invasion, personally the first half is better then the second
Did you get The Myth Makers on vinyl? It was actually the best £26 I ever spent just as the actual day it dropped came at midnight
Nah I didn’t get it, I prefer recons over audio!
@@JoshSnares Don't get me wrong, I got Marco Polo (colour and B&W) on a blank DVD disc in a case with custom artwork, but that won't stop me getting those desert splatter discs!
I wonder where Galaxy Four and The Abominable Snowmen would fit on this ranking, if it were to be updated
I like all the animated story's apart for the web of fear.
john you are a dear and i want to hug you
I’m terrified at the idea there may be more Shapeshifter releases.
I highly doubt we will get more from them…
Here is my ranking at the moment (it has been a while since I last saw the Invasion animation though):
13) The Web of Fear
12) The Reign of Terror
11) Power 2016
10) The Ice Warrior
9) The Tenth Planet
8) Fury from the Deep
7) The Invasion
6) Shada
5) Power of the Daleks Special Edition
4) The Faceless Ones
3) The Moonbase
2/1) The Macra Terror/The Evil of the Daleks (can’t pick)
PS: I would honestly love to see the Myth Makers aswell 😂 An underrated one although I hate the ending
I Thought Ben In POTD (Power Of The Daleks) Was Cross-eyed
If you watched it with the sound off you'd never guess it was supposed to be Ben.
I don't have issues with the existing ones but can't we have : Marco Polo, Myth Makers,Dalek Master Plan ,CVe;estial Toymaker,Massacre and Savages?
Only need The Wheel in Space now. To finish off my Cyberman collection.
Although The Dalek Master Plan is still the holy grail.
Bbc America live broadcasts I mean!
Do they announce when the broadcast the animations on BBC America or have I just not been paying attention?. You get the latest series announcements all the time but I don't remember them ever saying "Time To Watch The Animation, Kids!"
No idea, I live in Australia! 😂
Same, I wanted more Ice Warriors.
