As a Classic Who Music aficionado, hearing actual music from those stories being played always gets a smile out of me! (Like you actually used the clean released music from The Invasion! I’ve seen reviews of The Invasion where they’ve just used a UA-cam rip from the audio of the episode itself, even tho the score has been officially released!)
Admittedly, I've only seen The Tenth Planet and Power of the Daleks but from what I've seen in this video there's definitely a bunch more I'll have to add to my watchlist. Definitely agree with the ruling on Web of Fear though. Those animations just look like floppy ragdolls being loosely puppeted.

Nice review. I only have a few of these stories on DVD/Blu Ray (we get short changed in the US and most are only on DVD) so now I have an idea which to get first and save the not so good for last. 👍
I feel when when the CBBC went to their own dedicated channel the quality went downhill and we lost alot of prime quality content. This was the era when programs started going into computer based animation and we stopped having great British animation and programming which has had an effect on the quality we produce today
I think people big up The Macra Terror’s animation too much nowadays, it’s way too uncharacteristically smooth and looks like how a computer interprets human movements. Evil’s animation is simply perfection and yes I do agree with The Invasion’s also being one of da best of da best.
Having spotted some interesting smear frames when editing, I reckon they used some sort of auto interpolation to smooth out the animation. Gives it a bit of an uncanny smooth look at times
There's something jarring about 60s B&W episodes in colour, and/or modern aspect ratio. Not seeking to recapture the atmosphere, trying to make it 'better'... misses the point. For me anyway. The missing episodes, even those that comprise full stories across multiple episodes, exist within a context. Trying to 'do something different' asks us to not just engage with the DW premise, which we've already agreed to, and then engage with animation of that in live-action format, but asks us to step through further layers that take all that away from the 60s into something entirely different. Context matters. I tend to rewatch seasons, or sit to 'watch the second doctor' (BIG second doctor fan here), and as someone else noted, sticking with audio and stills actually works better than most of the animation efforts to date for all the reasons noted above. But I have all the animations regardless. Because... Doctor Who.
I am tickled by the idea that the Fury From The Deep relies on wide shots because of Covid, as if the animated characters are having to socially distance from each other! 😂😂
Have the 1990's audio cassette release of Evil of the Daleks and comparing it to the blu-ray (and indeed the audio only transfer of said cassette included as a bonus feature) I 100& agree that Mark Ayres has done a fantastic job with the audio. I know they were dealing with 90's technology and probably zero budget but those three original mid-90's lost story narrated soundtrack releases (Evil of the Daleks, Tomb of Cybermern and Macra Terror) sound terrible by modern standards. I only keep them as BBC Worldwide having misplaced the master tapes they are unbelievably themselves now regarded as lost media.
Let's be honest, Reign of Terror / The Moonbase & Tenth Planet (all Planet 55 productions) are the best animations...🏆🥇🎖️ all the rest look way to inferior... sorry BBC, I mean I do appreciate them getting animated & am looking forward to Galaxy 4🤞🏻, but the early animations are the better... so I disagree with the guy on the video...to me the more highly detailed animations look 💯% better than the new stuff 👍🏻👾
I don't know of it is deliberate but I can't hear the phrase "could have been better" without thinking of young Chibnall's didn't-age-well critique of season 23. As an aside, those Ice Warrior claws predate Lego minifigures: just another example of Doctor Who did it first!
I love every second doctor story that has been animated up to 2022 and I the tenth planet episode 4 animated version and the shrda and 2023 the shard animated is not really good that should have not done it because the power of the daleks animated version is way better because I looks way better
How do you rank Scream of the Shalka and the Tennant animations ? Can you do this same treatment to doctor who spinoff media ? (P.r.o.b.e, the Sontaran movies, Sil, Downtime and the Auton trilogy, etc)
Personally I really want like one original animated episode. I'd prefer it not be a gimmick episode where "The Doctor and the companion get sucked into a TV WOAAAAH", cause I feel like that's cliche, just... Make like a straightforward Doctor Who episode... but it's animated. But it actually has the budget of an average episode so some money can actually be put into the animation. Hell, that would be a good idea for the 60th. How do we include all the past Doctors if the actors are much older than they're supposed to be, or can only be played by look-alikes/sound-alikes? Make it animated. I heard that Big Finish would make visual medium stories if the actual show ever goes under, and if that happens, I hope they go the animated route instead of just making a live action show again. or like a motion comic at least, so you can save some money on the animation.
In animation alone I think The Moonbase is top tier, but I couldn't help but feel like the animation didn't fully line up with the audio. I can't remember the scene but two people are talking over a radio, the voices obviously indicating which character was in the room for the shot, and sometimes the animation would hold on somebody as their voice went from clear to tinny as the shot was supposed to change. I dunno, it wasn't major, but it took me out of it a bit. Still, like I said, the animation itself is amazing, I'll never be ungrateful for any of these releases
I have to disagree with you on The Macra Terror, it's tough to explain but the best way I can is, the characters seem to be constantly moving to the point that , for me, it detracts from the story. Even when standing listening, the characters seem to shrug or sway and move appendages throughout.
