  • Thanks for all the replies over the last few years with regard to the Drain Pump issue. Hopefully it's been an easy fix as promised in Part 3. I now have a NEW Drain Pump, as of last week. Characteristics of a pump going bad are, the Rinse Cycle stays on for about 15 minutes, it tries to drain but stops every 20 seconds or so and you might find water leaking at the pump rubber seal. If you've taken the pump off, you'll know what I mean. A WARNING, though - Don't let it persist too long. It might blow the board. Total cost for the fix, about $90 for the part and remember that 5 minute fix I promised.

It is the exact same noise we had on ours after 5 years. It definitely was the pump. You can replace it if you want but I just pulled mine out and fixed it. If you spin it with your hand real fast you can hear it squeaking. The rubbing is actually coming from the motor. I took the pump completely apart. I found the motor rotor (the large drum looking metal piece below the impeller of the pump) and the stator that it spins in had corrosion (rust) in them. I took a wire brush and gently brushed the rust away, wiped it down with a dry cloth, greased the bearings lightly, put it all back together and it works like new. Thanks for the comments below, it helped me diagnose the problem.

HERE IS A SIMPLE SOLUTION!!! Mine did the same for several days... I did some research and found a "guru" that it needs some lube. It's not a diverter valve and it probably isn't a pump making that kind of noise. Its the bearings and the propeller of the pump that are dry. You need to lube it. Guru said to use silicone paste, but I had on hand silicone spray. I sprayed the propeller, the post, and anywhere I could get the red spray extender thingy in and sprayed away. THE NOISE IS GONE!

The waterfall effect is normally called Eco Active. That is for the wash cycle. Hope that helps. Hopefully it is still going.

That noise is the drain pump, spray some C.R.C. / wd40 lube on the pump bearings from underneath the machine and it will shut it up for a long time. Its just that the pump bearings are running dry. probably best to get a new pump. Hope this helps you out :)

Well my spouse was not too impressed when I used her tweezers to get the lint out of the pump, but a few shots of white grease later and all is forgiven now that the screech is gone! Thank you AW!

Easy fix. It is 100% the bearing on the outlet pump making this screech ( NOT main drum bearings). I fix several of these and recognize the exact tone of noise and part of cycle it occurs. Easy to test place in diagnostic mode and turn pump on/ off. Easy to fix. flip machine onto back and lube pump bearing or WD40 if you don't have grease. Only other thing is blockages or loose items stuck in pump causing extra pressure on it as it turns.

Yes spraying some lube on the two pump bearings stopped the screach for me. My model is Fisher & Pykel Prime MW511

Thanks. That was my next idea. Sears techs just don't have enough product knowledge regarding F & P. They should've done that in the first place. Aynyway, I'll give that a shot.

@awparamount Thank you for this update. I'm in the process of chosing a W/D setup, and I was thinking I might go through Sears, but this is a good heads-up for me.... appreciate it. Thank you.

Flipped it over and spray some lithium grease on the small motor and it went away...whew!

Ok- so my washer wasn't making noise... but then it wouldn't spin. WTH? After taking apart everything, I found the connectors in a housing attached to the motor on the pump were too far down. I took off the plastic housing and bent the two prongs up a bit. Reconnected everything and ran the diagnostic to check the pump. It worked! The repair man said it the water pump would definitely need replacing (a two week wait and over $300 just the part). He can keep it! ... So check your connections!

I'm having the exact same problem during the fill and rinse cycle with my F/P GWL11. My new pump should be arriving today. The P/N I ordered was 420325P. They had the part in stock.

Water pump down under buy a new one very simple to replace check for debris in the hole when you remove it. Might have to pull the inner tub out to clean it if you find a bunch of sand.

my pump motor bearings were ok but the winding laminations were scrapping on the side as the motor turned because the two retaining holes in the plastic had stretched leaving the motor not quite mounted straight.maybe it's a bit the bearings as well but the motor is heavy and the retention is not adequate.
anyway squirting silicon into the bearings and motor seem to have helped as well as tightening the bolts !
to remove the motor unclick a plastic latch and rotate

I knew it was a shagged pump.. even before hearing the video hope you got your money back for the $60 part if the diverter does not work it does re-circulate the water Hope your washer is been working since..

all that is, is the pump, tilt it back and the pump is on the right side underneath, spray a little crc or oil on the fan of the pump and it will go silent.

Just passing through, I don't know much about washing machines but troubleshooting machinnery at work with limited fitters handy, you get an ear for some things (you have to troubleshoot stuff before you call them). If it happens during the rinse cycles it's probably one of the pumps. It sounds like a dry bearing or shaft, or even a loose or collapsed bearing maybe?

@awparamount Thanks everyone for your replies. I fixed it a couple months ago and it works fine for now. It WAS the bearings and it was a quick fix. No more than 10 minutes. Sears, however, that's another story. Some of the most incompetent and unprofessional people to deal with. The whole thing took over 9 months to resolve along with over 60 phone calls, all recorded. It was so apparent they did not want to refund my $242.41. Never, ever again will I deal with Sears, and nor should you.

I removed the drain pump, disassembled it and cleaned and regreased it. The squealing noise issue was resolved for about 2 days and returned. Now I'm tempted to replace the diverter valve, but I don't want to start throwing money at it until I'm certain I have isolated that erie squealing noise. The noise appears when the machine is filling, so at that point is the drain pump being activated, or should I turn my attention to the filler valves or the diverter valve. Or, redo the pump and hope for the best.

I know what your problem is. Your drain pipe that connects to the wall to drain the machine, is inside of your wall to deep and thus is draining your water faster than your pump can catch up because there has to be water flowing through the pump, or it will make that noise. When the drain tube is to far into the wall, it siphons the water out before the pump can drain thus, blowing your pump and board. trust me I know.

You are right and if you leave the pump too long not draining it can cause a burning smell and so it will blow a fuse in the board in the housing.

Mine isn't screeching but it does take forever and or fail to get through the rinse cycle (doesn't drain promptly or completely). Do you think it is worth trying to lube it or should I just buy a new pump?
By the way I have been through the diverter valve fix(mine had a safety pin stuck in it) The symptom of the diverter valve being blocked is that it spits water out the top during the spin cycle.

Hi I have a Fisher and paykel washer. Our drain pump went out. We had a repair man come and look at it. He turned it on said that's what the.problem was then he couldn't get the part. We ended up getting the part ourselves. My husband went to fix it today and we noticed that now when we plug it in its getting NO power to it. I read online it might be the control board. After hours of searching I found ONE online. I ordered it and we are waiting for it to come. Do you have ANY suggestions for us? Have u replaced either one on your washer? Our model number is 479595 GWL15 any info at ALL would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
