Thanks for the guide, I removed my fan without having to take the airbox out. I completely removed the anti-roll bar as I was doing the work on axle stands and it was in the way. Then I removed the plastic wheel arch trim to let more light in and aid access. The worst part of the job is getting coolant dripping into your face! The water pump single top torx bolt is awkward to get a good angle on. Once you have it all out, the new parts go back in easy enough, I fitted the thermostat first and then the pump. I connected a 10A capable charger and ran the bleed process, the new pump could be heard working. I used an OEM Pierburg pump and behr thermostat. 2006 E90 323i N52 (Japan Import)
No to air box removal. Yes, to dropping sway bar. Also move the power steering line and hanger tab. I'm working extra tight, 128i, 2012, N52. Also doing belt, tensioner and idler. The tensioner bolt is known to sag and if you leak oil from filter housing the belt will feed into the main and hand grenade the engine. Replacing plastic coolant flag on front of engine with aluminum Rein (next to tensioner). It will fail and leave you on the side of the road. Finally, an oil change while I'm there.
For future information if the torx bolts are not being used to bolt the head down to the block then you dont have too replace the bolts. Same goes for the starter bolts.
@@TOMAHAWK813 They recommend, yes. But they're not going to back out, or break on you. Bolts that are used to mount and not seal you can get away with reuse.
@@zureai If they were the head bolts, crank bolt, or any kind of internal bolt id say yes, but being there are 3 bolts that hold up the water pump I'd say it doesn't matter. I didn't use new bolts when I replaced mine 2 years ago, and it's just fine.
Makes the job 10x easier. And taking the fan out is very easy. If you do the job without taking the fan out you’ll notice you have barely any room to work with.
Im not following why you removed the airbox and fan...This entire job is done from underneath the car. Why complicate things?? Even your radiator hoses can stay in place (other than removing them from the water pump and thermostat).
For room. Doing it from the bottom would complicate things even more and you wouldn’t be able to get it done without taking the fan out. It’s a really tight fit in there and everything I did was necessary. Airbox needs to come out to take the fan out from the top. I don’t know anyone that has done this without taking the fan out. All rad hoses need to go as well to get the fan out easier. That’s all the easy part.
Once you start wrenching on them BMW’s, you will find out IMMEDIATELY, to why he is taking them all out! 😝 It is a mother funker to work on them small itty bitty places
its easier to maneuver and simple to remove. thats all. I've done a radiator without touching the airbox, but if you can get yourself a bit of extra room for not a lot of extra work, it can be worth it.
So is the pump connected to the timing i beed to do this on a 2011 535i i believe I'm not 100% sure on the model its my first BMW plus my first time replacing anything on a BMW any advice will be highly appreciated ty God bless
No, That is why it is called an "ELECTRIC" Waterpump. It is independent of the belt entirely. Very genius. This is so the car can continue circulating coolant 5-10 minutes after the car is shut off to continue cooling. Meanwhile, belt driven water pumps turn off with the car, meaning you're cooking your gaskets until the car cools off. Scary when you think about it. Another reason I only buy BMWs. Easy to work on & full of great features.
Bought a damn 328i with every common issue under the sun and every leak immediately but it was $1300 with 124k miles. either way, wish me luck everyone because i need it. Quoted 3.9k in repairs but i know whats wrong w the car at the very least
Trust me bro you’re better off fixing it up then having a car note in this economy. Try to do some of them yourself if you can! But if not don’t stress. Look for shops that has a finance option as well. That helped me a lot on my E90. Currently gonna start revamping the entire suspension DIY! They are good cars and last a long time just gotta do the maintenance!
@@trustyoungpierre9959 that’s what i was thinking and my thought process has gone like this. I could have purchased a bmw for 5k with 112k miles and similar issues, or the one i have and only have it cost me 5k TOTAL.
@@yungjetski2751 yeah exactly! Then you wouldn’t have to worry about it for years after. Trouble free BMW. Stack your bread up etc. at the end of the day, you and I don’t gotta car note. Just insurance, gas and maintenance. We can really afford these cars all because we don’t have a car note!🫡
I bought this for my son, loaded, for $7k, with about 75k miles on it, and am just now having some small issues like this arise. I'm ok with the maintenance bc I know the quality of a vehicle, bmw, is.
This happened to my car as well I’m 130k I couldn’t figure out what was wrong because upper hose was cracked i thought was that then happened again the light came on then I did radiator that didn’t work and took to shop they said water pump after quoting over 1500$ so I’m do it my self again ! lol anyways does anyone have a part number

Regular folks will say "iTs a mOnEy pIt, WoRsE cAr eVer" then take it to the BMW Dealership. You gotta pay to play and learn how to fix stuff 🙃
Tide Pod right lol. Working on this car is very rewarding.
I’ve had five bmws currently running two. You gotta know how to turn a wrench and do research. They are good cars just need looking after.
@@TOMAHAWK813 I bought a new lower radiator hose but what are the 3 other hoses that go on the thermostat? Cant seem to find them.

How long would a noob take to replace the water pump and thermostat? with all the right tools, of course

do you know if the date code on the waterpump is visible without having to remove everything?

nice welds @1:55
Thank you

When you replaced the water pump. Do you know if the old pump brand was pierburg?
That’s a good question, I think it was the factory bmw one that came with the car.
I did some research today on this project and according to FCP Euro website, Pierburg manufactures the water pumps for BMW, they are the OEM.

No coding or anything:) Just make sure to bleed the coolant system.

I don’t understand stand why you have done it that way. You made it longer than it needs to be
Did it what way? Why so vague? Can you explain lol. There’s no other way to do this so I’m not sure what you’re talking about.

All the hoses you can get
For real I would replace every hose if possible . They aren’t that expensive since you already got everything apart

8 ft lbs torque is incorrect on the coolant pump aluminum bolts. supposed to be angle torqued after initial torque spec.
Oh well, I think it'll be fine lol
7 ftlbs + 90* is the correct spec
