I have been watching you and using Anubis’s for a little over 2 years and there were at least three things I did not know! Thank you! You are awesome !
I love anubias! You've taught so many great tips...a new one for me was making sure the rhizome stays clear of detritus, etc. I didn't know the peace lily was related! I just bought one on clearance. I thought it was a great price to try growing out of the aquarium, but it is so healthy and still blooming, so I'm enjoying as a houseplant for now. Be proud you have a bloom after all this time! I just learned that nurseries give the plant a growth hormone so they force bloom for sale. It's a little harder to get a natural bloom after that. Congrats!! 🌱
I have one that I bought when I first started my tank, I’ve changed tanks now probably 4 times now and I don’t know what kind I have but it’s so cute cause it’s all big and bulky it looks like a little bush, I love it I have cut accidentally little piece of it with out knowing I could until now and they all are doing just fine, it’s an interesting and very cute plant I love it! It’s the center piece of my tank, thank you for all the info you put out there for us new people into the hobby.
Hi Joanna, great video! I also love anubius and have had the same anubius barteri rhizome going since 1998 which is now in numerous aquariums. I think you hit the most critical tip which is not burying the rhizome, the second most critical advice, I think, is to keep it with fast growing plants (like hygro poly, hornwort, floaters, etc... ) to ensure that excess nutrients are sucked out quickly and algae doesn't cover the slow growing anubius. As the scape matures and the total volume of anubius increases I dial back the fast growers as the larger amount of anubius starts to sequester more nutrients. I've managed to get to a number of "end game" anubius scapes which were/are 100% anubius jungles and absolutely bullet proof. I would say they are my most stable tanks and I've actually been able to keep neons to the age of 8 + (still going) in one of the tanks. The one other tip I can add is for people who are having success with anubius. When new growth has shaded distant portions of the rhizome to the point where it is completely bare of leaves but still healthy, snap off the leafless portion of the rhizome (I like to use at least two inches) and put it in an extra aquarium that has low light and nutrients. After a few weeks little plantlets will start growing from the nodes of the rhizome. You can allow them to get as big as you like, but I like at least 3 leaves and some roots. When they have achieved this size I just pry them off with a finger nail and glue to wood or rocks and place in an open space in one of my aquariums. After doing this for a while I now have a 1 gallon aquarium dedicated to anubius rhizome plantlet starts. I just add bare rhizome as I discover it and remove any rotten rhizome and plantlets. I don't fertilize, I just keep the water topped up. It's been a factory for baby plants.
Anubias is just like all other stolonic aroids. I've divided the stolons of P. gloriosum, pastazanum, and dean mcdowell the same way. Coming into the aquarium world from the houseplant world I was excited to learn about aquatic aroids. But kind of sad that Anubius grows from stolons and won't vine up a moss pole as I have all my vining plants on moss poles.

I purchased a beautiful coffeefolia. I just wedged it in wood...the darn thing got rot. I got it out before it infected my other anubias in the tank....but so sad. I want to try a new one but I'm leaning towards tissue culture for all my plants. It seems like I have better luck with them. Love this video. I'm a huge anubias fan. I just got some bolbitus and I'm waiting for it to grow in. I saw the hygrophila pinnatifida and I'm really wanting to try it out. How is it growing for you?
Thanks, Joanna! Anubias Nana Petite was the very first plant I was able to keep alive when I began using live plants in my tanks. I would love to be able to have them grow out of the tank, but I have a cat who would would love to go fishing. 😮
So about the emerged growth... they do need humidity and not just spraying, they need constant high humidity. I have mine in and out of the water often, because my anubias are the perfect 'I need some green in my breeding tank' thing, and I have them all tied to some wood that is easy to carry around. When I don't have space in any of my tanks I just use a plastic (transparent!) bin with maybe 5cm water in and close the lid tight. Place them near a window or under a light and they will live just fine.
Thanks:) Some good points mentioned that I wasn't aware of. I have never cut the roots only because I love when they get really long and wonder around:) So cool.
THANK U THANK U!!! Now I know why my Anubias have rotted away in the past. I used to bury them completely in gravel 😝 I have NEW anibias and will plant them exactly how they need to be. Thank you!!
Hi Joanna.(How do you spell your name?) I don’t know if your had seen on 2 videos about sponge filters in the comment section that I had to step out of the fish hobby due to serious health problems. I couldn’t care for my fish with the shape I was in but I have recovered 80%. I am now getting back into the hobby with a 90 gallon discus tank. Well, here I go. This tank is going to have anubias in it. This will be my first planted tank. This was a perfect video for me. Your info will help me tremendously. Respectfully, Marty Borst
Thank you for the Anubias care tips! Just ordered a few Anubias petite pieces and looking forward to growing and caring from them. Thumbs up & subscribed :)
Excellent video with a lot of great suggestions. My favs were keeping the rhizomes free of detritus and making small cuts in the rhizome will create new growth.
I love Anubias. In 7 years of keeping the same 2 monster common/comet goldfish, it is the ONLY plant which they will not eat! I have them all over the tank, but I also have 1 massive clump that started as a single baby plant from Petco, and now it's the size of a softball. Absolutely the best beginner plant, especially for low-tech aquariums.
Great video, Joanna! My favorite anubius, also, is the Nana petite.. I find that they do best underneath other plants and when I ignore them!😆 A watched pot never boils!🥰
I am new only since 10/27/22... but like you, I am coming to love this Plant. I have a few varieties in my tank, including that tiny one. I bought my first one because I noticed my Betta ignored the fake Betta Bed and the store suggested getting the midsized variety. My Betta loves sitting on it and under it. I added more of it and it is his favorite hide out place. Great job. Thanks for the tip about keeping the Rhyzome cleaned off. And, I do have one of those tiny floaters that must have got accidentally knocked off during my siphoning attempts. It is nice to know that I can reglue it back on one of the Driftwood. This time, I will stick it in a joint. :-)
Technically it's a stolon, not a rhizome. Rhizomes (like ginger or turmeric) must always be buried vs stolons (like Philodendrons gloriosum; pastazanum; & dean mcdowell) should never be burried as they will rot. In the houseplant world we call plants with stolons terrestrial or creepers/crawlers as they grow along the forest floor. If Anubias grew up trees it would be called a vine as stolons grow horizontally. It's been fun learning a lot about aquariums from your channel. Thank you!
@@francesdumaliang6132 The point was to stop the spread of misinformation and to help people. Both of which you failed. Tubers are potatoes & taro. Botanists agree that Anubias is an aroid grown from a stolon.
Ik this isn’t part of the video but ur tank is really cool! Are they multiple tanks attached to each other? If so, where did you get it? Or did u make it?
Carole Cox: Any "gel" superglue is fine. You dont have to use a certain brand. And any super glue accelerator will work. I've got bottle of accelerator that I use with multiple multiple brands and viscositys of superglue and it works fine with all of them. One thing though, rinse the plant off good after using an accelerator. Don't want the accelerator chemical getting into your tank.
Awesome! My favorite. Something else ppl should know about Anubias… they’re essentially the ‘aquatic Philodendron’ (or Monstera, Anthurium, Pothos, etc.) equivalent, as they belong to the same family, Araceae-the aroids or arums. You know I had a bunch of different types for like, ten years, and I’m also a plant collector, and I always said to myself “wow, these Anubias sure look and behave like a mini Monstera,” without ever stopping for two minutes to look on Google or Wikipedia. Yep, my mind was blown to discover that. 🤔😂😂 And Cryptocorynes & Bucephalandra are aroids too! Crypts, to me, are like aquatic peace lilies or calla lilies. Both also aroids. They’re close, in form, growth habit, etc. Hardy, but don’t like being moved, and the lighting has to be just right.
Since they have stolons I guess they behave more like P. gloriosum and pastazanum rather than a vining aroids like monstera or pothos. I also come from the houseplant world so it's been funny coming into the aquarium world seeing all the mislabeling of plants. Rhizomes (e.g. ginger and turmeric) always must be buried.
I love it! Do you have any suggestions or videos on planting, decorating a filled tank? I have a 65 gal on a stand. So, getting to the bottom is a chore! I know I should I planned better. 😣
Can a peace lily be planted in your tank too like all the way under ? Very new to plants 🌱 in the tanks 👏 learning thank you ‘ enjoy watching your videos
Loved your video, very informative. I am new to keeping live plants and am loving the Anubias I have gotten. Might be your favorite Nana Petite. I am battling some brown algae and some of the leaves are hard to get to. It's ok to pull the plant out and do a quick clean and trim right? It hasn't been in my tank long so the roots haven't really taken hold yet. Thanks in advance and thanks for all your great videos!!!
I Love Anubis. have 4 different types in my 15gal. Have another 2 on my new shopping list when my 50gal is shipped over that we will migrate to... I did not know about the Peace Lily... that is so weird... that is a plant I love. What could it mean: my favorite garden plant and tank plant are the same family... Hmm... thank you for a great video!
Hi i have anubias in my 75 with a nicrew at about 35% strength but have always had trouble with black beard algae and it's only on the anubias. I also have java fern and other low light plants and don't get black beard algae. I'm baffled any ideas?
Anubias rock! Had mine for ages! But it's time to add some non-green colors to my tank. Been looking through various online forums, can you recommend plants as durable and easy as the Anubia is, ideally in small size and that can add color to my tank please? Lots of love!❤❤
35 Ltr tank, semi natural light, 6-8 hours of artificial light. Danios + short and long fin, corydoras, gobi, elachy tetras (had my fish community for over 2-5 years, considering adding more fish next week)
I tried something in one of my tanks, I took a pleco cave and glued one Anubias to it and tied a second one to it but with a string just long enough so it looks like it’s floating just up from the cave. After awhile the roots grew down the string to the cave.
hello. Does the rhisome need light or just the leaves. Reason asking is I have holy rock and have put the plants in the holes. So only leaves are exposed to light
I just got an anubias marble white. It is so tiny and adorable! It came in a tiny cup as a tissue culture, growing in the jell stuff. I'm not quite sure what to do with it now. I believe I have to rinse off the jelly stuff, then attach it to something. My tank is a 5 gallon one, that is cycleing with plants only in it so far. I hope I don't kill it! Any advice will be very welcome, and thanks! BTW it is barely the size of a quarter with a lot of tiny leaves, so many that I can just make out a teeny tiny bit of rhyzome!
i recently got a bunch of Anubias nana and barterie from a grower when i got them they were mounted to a piece of drift wood that was wrapped in filter media. The growth was amazing as in these were really healthy plants. I asked why cover the roots and rhyzome with filter media he said it grows the roots faster. I wish i could post a pic here to show. i also peaked into the rhyzome and it was healthy
Hi Joanna, I have a 14 gallon cube aquarium that I would like to set up for a betta. I would like to make it a bare bottom tank but I would also like to put a plant that has big leaves on it like Anubis’s in some sort of a glass container in the middle of the tank. I have never had any luck growing plants in aquariums. And I don’t like the mask when they melt and believe die, and everything else. So I thought I would try to grow something in a container with the proper substrate and see how I did having a clean, sparkling aquarium means a lot to me. Do you have any ideas.? Thanks, Larry.
If you are getting a spreading rhizome rot (like it has hopped from plant to plant and its not due to burring the rhizome) in your tank treat it with kanaplex and sequester your tools and nets so you dont spread, rhizome rot is very contagious and can hop to buce too.
When stolons rot (in the houseplant world) we can use cinnamon to help stop it. In the case of Anubias - I guess that would only work if the stolon was out of the water. Thanks for the kanaplex tip!
Hello! First of all I just want to say how much I enjoy your videos, you are definitely one of my faves! Second, I was wondering if you could help me….i’ve had my Anubis’s (it’s one of the large varieties) for a couple years and it grew kind of big, however in those two years I didn’t really look after what nutes it was getting and left the light on for days….anyways, I moved it around, cut of all the leaves with algae growing on them it’s much smaller now, but I was thinking healthier, getting nutes and other plants….Anyways to the point of my short story 😅 there’s a “banana” growing out of it 😮😢 a new leave growing, but it turned out to be a case and a “banana” looking thing is coming out of it. I have pictures but can’t post them here? Thank you in advance, I’m just kind of at a loss here.
Thank you so much! Lucky you!!!- that is an Anubias flower! I’ve had only a few flower over the years. It won’t be around forever so try to enjoy it while it’s there 😊
Great plant, very expensive here in NZ I am collecting quite a lot of it easy plant nice flower, I didn't know it was related to the peace Lillie! I have a naughty severum that has eaten all the leaves in one tank
My Anubis, the coin shaped ones are located at the top of my tank attached to driftwood but appear to be yellowing, compared to my regular big leaded Anubis that are attached to rock. Any ideas as to why they may be yellowing? The rhizome is clean. I assumed it because the light might be too bright.
Hello Joanna, ever run into an anubias petite that grew into a nana/barteri when emersed? I've had had this happen to one of mine. I'm wondering if it was even a petite to begin with. So frustrating.
Ive had mine for over 2.5 years growing in rock substrate only on the bottom of the tank. It still has all of its original leaves (never trimmed it) and it flowers about once a month. I dont add any fertilizers or co2. This is in a 20gal guppy aquarium with both male and female, approx 25 fish. The tank does sport a marineland 75gal filter though.
These things can grow really big if given space. Had one of these that was over 30 years old. It was gigantic. One thing I noticed was that once it hit the water surface that's when it started to bloom. In my tank we had old school light bulbs(it was long ago) and once the leaves got over the water they would often burn on the lights. The "flower" would dry out quickly and die off which is to be expected I guess. It's such a sturdy plant and never disappoints you. The leaves can get quite large but it takes a while. Bigger fish like pleco liked to hide under it as it had a "natural" cave and big leaves. Definitely one of my favorite aquatic plants.
Hello and thank you for your videos! Im beru much a "newbie" when it comes to aquariums, plants, etc. I was recently gifted an 2 Anubias plants for my aquarium. One is called a Nana, but I dont know the other. Can you help identify my 2nd plant by chance? Thank you much!
Had trouble with algae on Anubias when I got back in the hobby. Now mostly A.'coffeefolia' Trying to.acclimate some to my wc calvus tank but I'll have to bring the TDS down. You might want to search out ' Bonsai ' ; pretty neat.'Pangolino' from Europe is perhaps the smallest. White cvs. are grown emersed and don't think many have success with them.Never heard of 'Gigantea' but will be lookout for it. Your Petco has to be 10x better than the one here.
I hope you can helpppppppp me. I'm new to aquarium plants as in only about 1.5 months. I bought a few types of plants from Petco. I bought crested Java fern, Anubias Bateri. Someone gave me some moss type ball, and I also bought some hornwart the other day. The Java fern and anubias is getting brown streaks. I treat them with Flourish K, Fe, Excel. I did a 50% water change yesterday and added those treatments again. I tested my pH tonight and found it was 6-6.5. I have a bare bottom tank. If I need to increase the pH I can add some bags of substrate to bring it up. It's a 20 gallon but I'd love to set up both my 75 gallons but learning with this 20. What should I do?
You didn’t mention what temperatures or ph’s they can handle, I was mainly wondering if they can handle around 40f degrees .. I’m currently treating my fish so I wanted to put my plants outside for sun but I’m worried they might get too cold outside at night
I've got a arubius in a tank that has heximeta, can I bleach it to be certain that the Parasites aren't transferred to another tank? Do you know? I thank you for your education 😮
I was surprised when my anubias put out a beautiful white flower. I've never seen a video that describes the underwater flower, but after 8 months in my aquarium I get a new flower about once every 3 months
@@HerHairExpression I wish I could tell you I have had them over a year. The three I originally glued to a piece of driftwood now are a clump about 14 inches long 4 deep and 6 tall and there are currently 6 4 to 6 inch stems with a single white flower on top of them. The flowers last about two weeks and than turn brown and fall.
I have 3 anubias minima since a year ago. They are super-glued to my centerpiece driftwood. They have grown very well. However, none of my other plants were doing well because I only had the low-level lights in my hood that came with the kit. Then, last June, I bought a glass top and added a Stingray 2 light. Now all my plants are doing great, except that my anubias is just exploding with black algae. I have to frequently take a toothbrush to the rhizomes and trim back the roots as they get covered. My several otos and amano shrimp can't keep up. Have cut back on light to only 6 hours per day, water changes every 1 to 2 weeks. Periodically use Easy Carbon, but it is hard on my anacharis. Am careful about not overfeeding fish...once per day. Any suggestions for dealing with the algae on my anubias?
I bought an anubias nana online.. it's roots were covered in artificial cotton and some of the roots and leaves were dissolving.. and there's only 4 or 5 leaves and already 2 of them were dissolving.. i don't think it will survive and it's my first time keeping anubias
I have a standard 5.5 gallon tank. I currently only have artificial plants. I want to only try 1 plant to start with. I was told anubias is prone to algae growth. Is this true?
Yes, they can get algae because they are slow growing. Keep them in a shady part of the tank. Maybe add some floating plants above them. And keep your tank clean and the water clean and that helps a lot too. Good luck.
I 💚 Anubias plants! I also grow some peace lilies out the tops of my larger aquariums. By the way, my peace lilies that I grow as house plants do better grown in a bowl with rocks and aquarium water (leaves are out of the water) than they grow in soil. So you might want to try that. I also grow Anubias in little cover terrariums and in plastic containers - in and out of water. Anubias Nana Petite is my favorite variety of Anubias💚
Not biased? You're Anu-biased. Too right, too! 😁

I hate to bug you but what is the special Super Glue you like? The one that uses a spray accelerator?
Thank you for all your tips!
@@gunnerneikoify Thank you! I always use the gel but have felt it needed a little help!
@@caroleinwv I love using an accelerator!! Sets the superglue in mere seconds and you're one your way!!!
@@gunnerneikoify I'll miss not getting it all over my fingers while I hold it in place 🤣
@@caroleinwv Been there, done that!!
And Cryptocorynes & Bucephalandra are aroids too!
Rhizomes (e.g. ginger and turmeric) always must be buried.
hi.
you have nice black sand in your tanks. what is the name of the sand? Where can i buy it?
I have one in the priest rectory tank. Took a few years, but now over a foot long and growing.
Lots of great info! I love Anubias too!😊
I love Anubius and Java fern! Thank you!!
👏🏻👏🏻 I have a coffefolia with holes 😟 any way to salvage it? Thanks 😊
Your set ups are beautiful
Thank you so much! 🌿☺️🌿
How would you recommend i add it to an existing tank? I have a large piece or driftwood, and a decent flow.
Thank you I got one, happy with the information provided.
Cool!
I absolutely Love anubias 😃
🌱🙌🌱
Thanks! Do you travel to Davenport IA for the swaps there?
Good to know. Thanks.
It won’t be around forever so try to enjoy it while it’s there 😊
Wow!!! She really is happy now then 😊 thank you so much. I’m pretty new to aquascaping, but apparently I’m doing something right!
Great info Joanna
Great plant, very expensive here in NZ I am collecting quite a lot of it easy plant nice flower, I didn't know it was related to the peace Lillie! I have a naughty severum that has eaten all the leaves in one tank
A Wednesday Foist watching some great info
Anubias is my fav too 😊
🙌🙌🙌
I love my Anudius jungle 🐠 very easy to spread around 😜
Yay for Anubias jungles!!!
I just found an Anubias Nangi at Petco. I had never seen it before… my betas love to rest on all of my Anubias leaves ❤
Hello Joanna, ever run into an anubias petite that grew into a nana/barteri when emersed? I've had had this happen to one of mine. I'm wondering if it was even a petite to begin with. So frustrating.
Lol - never - but all Anubias start out real tiny and very hard to distinguish between them all when they’re babies ☺️
Love ANUBIAS!
🙌🌱🙌 Hi! See y’all soon!
My anubias petite nana leaves are turning brown, i did just upgrade my light. Could this happen because of a lighting issue?
Looking to add live plants to my 10 gallon community with guppies and pygmy cory. You've sold me!
Woop! 🙌
I love your vids there the reason I got a nano tank scaping
Hello and thank you for your videos! Im beru much a "newbie" when it comes to aquariums, plants, etc. I was recently gifted an 2 Anubias plants for my aquarium. One is called a Nana, but I dont know the other. Can you help identify my 2nd plant by chance? Thank you much!
Very cute
My favorite plant too!!!!
Great explanation, thank you! 🙂
I have a seed pod or something growing out of the rizoo is this normal?
You should watch (fatherfish channel)
You didn’t mention what temperatures or ph’s they can handle, I was mainly wondering if they can handle around 40f degrees .. I’m currently treating my fish so I wanted to put my plants outside for sun but I’m worried they might get too cold outside at night
( I have a coffee and a nana) thank you for all the other info tho
Also my plants would only be outside for about a week
I've got a arubius in a tank that has heximeta, can I bleach it to be certain that the Parasites aren't transferred to another tank? Do you know? I thank you for your education 😮
I was surprised when my anubias put out a beautiful white flower. I've never seen a video that describes the underwater flower, but after 8 months in my aquarium I get a new flower about once every 3 months
How
@@HerHairExpression I wish I could tell you I have had them over a year.
Any suggestions for dealing with the algae on my anubias?
add nitrifying bacteria to your aquarium
If I had a piece of driftwood that goes above the waterline, could I put anubias on it so it looks like the driftwood is alive???
Do cherry shrimps clean the rhizome
Is it okay to plant the roots or will the roots pull the rhizome into the substrate?
Hi Roger, you can definitely plant the roots. They will usually wind up growing there anyways ☺️
Do anubias need any fertilizer like seachem flourish?
Yes, they need food just like all plants just less since they grow slower.
I bought an anubias nana online.. it's roots were covered in artificial cotton and some of the roots and leaves were dissolving.. and there's only 4 or 5 leaves and already 2 of them were dissolving.. i don't think it will survive and it's my first time keeping anubias
I just installed my first aquarium and put an Anubia plant in, 2 weeks ago. Now the plant has lost most of its leaves. What may has gone wrong?😢
Excellent vid! Thanks!
Hi.. Is gorilla glue Gel safe to use when attaching plants?
If it’s cyanoacrylate it is
Can they survive in outdoor ponds?
I have a standard 5.5 gallon tank. I currently only have artificial plants. I want to only try 1 plant to start with. I was told anubias is prone to algae growth. Is this true?
Yes, they can get algae because they are slow growing. Keep them in a shady part of the tank. Maybe add some floating plants above them. And keep your tank clean and the water clean and that helps a lot too. Good luck.
Just set up a nano Betta tank for my daughter! And guess what plant we choose? What is that beautiful fish at 8:42???
Omg where did you get your driftwood
I get it everywhere! Mostly fish stores or at Aquashella ☺️
@@thesmallscape I'll have to do some searching on aquarium stores close to me. We only have a petco and petsmart 😒
Thanks for the tip! Yes, I think I will do that soon, move my guy out of his soil. LOVE nana petite!!! Always will! ☺️
