@@garyfletcher844 You must not know the Osmonds very well. Until the brothers had to support Donny and Marie they were trending in a Zeppelin like direction. From their trips to the UK they knew Zeppelin personally and I think were heavily influenced by them. Were their first efforts derivative, likely, but they were cut off at the knees before we could find out what future efforts would bring.. Wayne was hit particularly hard by the family's (read father's) choice of direction. There were no more hard working, talented artists than them since early childhood. If they had to learn something new by the next day they'd be up all hours to learn it and have it perfect the next day. That hard work and stress affected their adulthood.

Yesssssssss!!!!! We get a rare glimpse of Jay doing lead vocals, with Merrill singing the line "What a show, there they go, smoking up the sky." This was the Osmonds at their rockin' best! Horses pertains to horsepower from automobiles creating pollution in the sky, that's what the song is about.

As much as a phenomenon the Osmonds were, they were still very underrated, especially today.
The song is about air pollution. "Crazy Horses" represents automobiles - "horsepower" - that create pollution in the skies from the exhaust. Keep going in the Osmond trail. They do pop, rock, and country. They have two older brothers who are deaf. Their sisterMarie joined in and then younger brother Jimmy. One of their theme songs is “He ain’t heavy. He’s my Brother.
Not only does it rock, it’s spreading awareness about pollution. The Osmonds are truly next level.
Yet it was banned in several countries because they thought it was about heroin.

Yep, Donny was on organ and slaying it. He was using a Yamaha YC30 electronic organ which had a bar above the keys called a Portamento Strip, which when you pressed your finger to it and slid from one end to the other, it would produce a continuous pitch from each key from low to high. You could also produce a vibrato sound by twitching your finger side to side quickly which Donny is doing at the end of each slide. The Osmond's were one of the first groups to incorporate this into a song with this model of organ. Funny you should say this songs makes you think of Led Zeppelin. The Osmond's were on one tour and opened for Led Zeppelin both in the U.S. and in Great Britain. At one of the Osmond's concerts in England John Bonham also brought his young son to their concert and got them to meet his son and get an autograph.
WOW! 😮 I had no idea that the Osmonds opened for Led Zeppelin! Do you happen to know which tour that was? Incredible! That must have been an amazing experience! Fun Fact: Did you know that Jimi Hendrix opened up for The Monkees?
Donald Fagen of Steely Dan also used a YC-30 on Do It Again, which was recorded in August of 1972. One month after Crazy Horses was released.
Now think about this: Jay was 17 -- just SEVENTEEN -- when he recorded the lead vocals on this song. Another good one in the harder rock category is "Hold Her Tight." Also give "One Way Ticket to Anywhere" and "Goin' Home" a listen. Those rock, too. Donny's vocals aren't on this track much -- his voice was changing. The keyboard noise is a sound bar, similar to the one you hear in "Good Vibrations" by the Beach Boys. It was a Yamaha keyboard. This is a fantastic song and I'm so glad you reacted to it. Love it! Beach Boys used an Electro Therimen(sp) on Good Vibrations. Donny was playing a Yamaha organ with a slider bar.

The Osmonds are so talented, They can just about do any type of Music.
Growing up with 5 sisters, who love the Osmonds, I always discounted them. I was into Rock and not bubble gum pop, which is how I categorized them. Later in life I came to really appreciate their talent. And this song especially, made me a believer in their talent. This is a really good Rock song, underrated.

@@michaelasay8587, they DID. But by that time, Donny and Marie's career had started to heat up. The radio stations no longer wanted to play the Osmond Brothers. The record company got firmly behind D&M, and stopped promoting the brothers, as the rockers they were evolving into. From their first album, OSMONDS, to Homemade, Phase III, Crazy Horses, and The Plan, there was a tremendous amount of growth. But the general public never got to see it.

This song did better in Europe. Great Britain than it did in the US .
Don't forget about their sister Marie Osmond. She and Donny look like twins and they have great duets together. They also had their own TV variety series.
Biggest crush on Marie back in the day as a teenage boy. She still is stunning and beautiful

They also got an award for being the youngest hosts of a tv show.
Saw on Twitter that Donnie invited them to Las Vegas to see one of his shows. Hope they get to meet him too.
From 1992-98, Donny toured in the Andrew Lloyd Webber-Tim Rice musical “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,” as the lead. To hear just how great his voice is you need to hear him sing "Close Every Door" from that musical. The musical was filmed as a movie in 1999 and there are clips from it on UA-cam. Just do a search for Donny Osmond "Close Every Door".

This was the one of the first songs written about Automobile exaust and pollution. They wrote it, produced it ... they did everything
Saw Donny and Marie in person about 5 years ago. Totally blown away by Donnys vocal strength. These days live performances can be disappointing. But he NAILED IT. And Marie was so FUNNY. Like stand up comic funny. So talented and they seem like they really value family. Totally respect the Osmond family.
Check out their “The Plan” album. They wrote it all- and they wrote Crazy Horses as well. They are so talented. Musicians all.
ABSOLUTELY BEST ALBUM EVER THE PLAN...
People forget that the Osmond Brothers have performed songs in many different genres, to include rock. In fact, there's another song from the "Crazy Horses" LP, called "We All Fall Down." I highly recommend you guys check that one out. It's another rock song and an incredible video with a surprise at the end. Some folks can only think of the "Donny & Marie Show" when they hear the name Osmonds; fans of these talented brothers know otherwise. Since the early 60's they've proven that they can do it all .... they sing, dance, play numerous instruments and put on a good show.
We All Fall Down is an amazing song. So many to think of.

The whole Crazy Horses album is heavy and good.
The Osmond family is unbelievable. Although it might ruin some Stevie Wonder reactions, the Osmond's and Cher singing Stevie Wonder hits compilation are a must see. Also, the Osmond's as barbershop quartet along with Andy Williams really shows their talents at a very young age.

@rossallee9790 Yes, they were great on The Andy Williams Show but I especially second their performance of the Stevie Wonder medley. I've already recommended it twice. Hopefully, Amber and Jay will do it soon. It is brilliant! 😀

The Osmonds have been performing for 50+ years, although most of them, now, have retired. They are a very talented family...they sing, they dance, they act, and they play over 20 instruments. IMO, you can't go wrong with the Osmonds. I have the cd/dvd of their 50th Anniversary special and i cry throughout the whole thing. SO many memories!
Merrill and the Older Brothers wanted to continue with the Rock side of music... However, Donnie became the Teenage Heartthrob and the girls went crazy! Donnie put out a solo Album in 1971 at 13 years old so the bubblegum teen sound took over! In Europe the Osmonds were the next Beatles and were extremely popular!
Donny almost got thrown out of England cause the girls went so crazy. The crown said it wasn’t healthy for the girls to get worked up like that.
All of the brothers wanted to continue including Donny. However their parents had other ideas and boom Donny & Marie with the others as back round scenery for humiliating skits. Wayne said that when he showed up and the script referred to them as 'the others in lobster suits' he was done. Alan & Merrill stayed on as producers. There's a documentary a few years old and they talk about it very honestly(sans Marie). It took years to heal.
Another interesting fact about the Osmond family, is that the majority of their songs are written by them. Donny's voice is still amazing at 65 years old. He was on the first season of The Masked Singer as the peacock (He did the theme from The Greatest Showman). Donny is amazing in Sacred Emotion, You should check out any of the Osmonds love songs (Let Me In, Darlin, etc.). Donny also starred in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (see Close Every Door) and him singing along with Jim Brickman's accompaniment of Love of My Life. Great Stuff.
Yes! Donny's voice on 'Sacred Emotion' is an amazing song!
I still have a special place for Jay in my heart. His lead here is stellar. I don't know that people think about it anymore, but horses in this song refers to horsepower. The smoke in the sky is symbolic for pollution. Turns out this was an early ecology song. I love it so much.
Donny said this in an interview about the keyboard he played on this song “It wasn't [a] theremin, it was a YC-30 Yamaha organ with a portamento slide. We had a wall of Marshalls in the studio. It was so loud that you couldn't even walk in the studio, so we had to play the organ from the control room. My brother Alan actually played it on the record. I played it live. But the secret to it was a wah-wah pedal. We opened the wah-wah just enough to get that really harsh kind of a piercing sound, but it was the loudness of the Marshalls that got us that sound. And then we doubled it. That was the secret to that sound.”
The sound Donny is making represents a horse. This is a song about pollution, crazy horses are cars. And Merrill also sings lead on Down By the Lazy River. The whole Crazy Horses album is just killer!! And Marie looked a lot like Merrill back then.
Donny explained that was created in the studio by Alan. He somehow wired the keyboard incorrectly to the mixing board to make that scream. Then they had to figure out how to do it outside the studio. Alan and Wayne are the instrument geniuses of the family.

You should listen to the full version of their Album The Plan. A mix of orchestral, rock and ballads. The absolute best album of them all.
Ozzy Osbourne actually told Donny he was a huge fan of this song. They wrote this song about pollution. Crazy horses was referring to horse power in cars smoking up the sky. They really wanted to pursue heavier rock, but were forced down the pop music road by the record industry and Donny and Marie emerged as a duo leaving the other brother as an after thought by the record label. There were 9 children in all, but the oldest 2 were deaf so they never performed. Jimmy was the youngest and also had a solo career.
At Christmas time, you have to hear Donny Osmond's version of "Mary Did You Know" . . . it's my favorite version of the song. Very rare that I fall in love with a song the first time I hear it, but his version of this song is the best.

This was the first record I ever wanted and my parents bought it for me, 7 inch vinyl single in a paper sleeve. I was 4 years old .....50 years ago....oh lordy!! I remember bouncing around the living room to this and on my mum's settee!!😂🤣

Crazy Horses was Ozzy Osborne’s (Black Sabbath.) favorite rock song at that time! I saw the Osmonds twice in the 70’s. Once at the San Diego Arena and the second time was at Caesar’s Palace in Vegas!! My dad called in a favor & we (me & my mom) had front stage seats and guest passes!! Another Osmond rock tune: Hold Her Tight- there’s a video where Jay’s killing it on drums and Merrill on bass.
In that same hard rock vein, "Business", "One Way Ticket to Anywhere", "Hold Her Tight", "Don't Panic", and "My Drum" (Jay sings lead on that one too). In the bubblegum pop vein, "Double Lovin'", "Keep On My Side", “Flirtin’”, and "Yo-Yo".
Then, there are many more of Donny's solo hits from the 70's as well as some from the 80's. He is still putting out music today, at 65. The Osmonds were always super talented, and full of surprises.
I really liked the Phase III Album.
My Drum is a KILLER track. So is Business. Not sure what album that’s on though.
Another rocker was "Goin' Home". Not as good as "Crazy Horses" or "Hold Her Tight," but still pretty jammin'.
as a guy with 4 sisters growing up in the 70's I heard a lot of Donny's album. "Go Away Little Girl" , Puppy Love, Twelfth of Never" so many tunes he had on the charts at once.

Bought the album just for this song. When it came out it blew me away.
If a heavy rock band had released this it would have been an all time great, I remember it in the charts and still listen to it today. Quality.

My friend and I would buy the Tiger Beat and other teen magazines and she would take the DeFranco pics and I would take the Osmonds.

In 2002 Donny did his own version of this song with a slightly different arrangement (more horns) with his brothers backing him up instead of him backing them up.
Amber, there's a song on Donny's 2004 album, What I meant To Say, titled, Keep Her In Mind. I'm pretty sure this one will melt your heart.
Next Christmas season, you should find Donny's solo Christmas album, Christmas at Home. It has long been a (if not THE) favorite in this house. From the sacred (O Holy Night) to the secular (It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year); from sweet ballades (A Soldier's King), to a funky Motown groove (Who Took the Mary Out of Christmas?), he is the master of every style and genre.
I can't tell you how many times I've watched your reactions to the Osmonds! You guys have made me smile so much! I've loved the Osmonds since I was a little girl. My sisters and I played their music EVERY DAY!! I love seeing you guys appreciate my music!! And not just the Osmonds but so many other musicians that I grew up with. Some random comments on this phase of The Osmonds. Donny was going through puberty when the Crazy Horses album was being made. This meant his voice was not reliable, so he took a back seat doing vocals and some of the other brothers stepped up. Donny was playing keyboards and that sound he was making was supposed to sound like a horse neighing. It's the thing people remember most when they think about this song. The Crazy Horses song and album were a departure in sound and style for them. The whole album is on the heavier side, and this would be the only time they would do it. They wanted a chance to show off their musicianship and show they really could play as well as sing. They were big enough at the time and their record company let them go with it, although they had their reservations. The Osmonds also probably wanted to show they were more than just a bunch of cute guys singing cute songs.
I'm 56 and never knew they did songs like this. My mind is completely blown. You guys are introducing me to new "older" songs. Love the channel.
If you want your mind blown listen to these four songs on the video called "The Osmonds The Plan Promotional video" on UA-cam. This is the embryo of the music they wanted to do but life and family stepped in the way.
Lol I watched your reaction 2 times. You both put a smile on my face. Donny sang a song “ Go away little girl” in the early 70’s. One you will like for sure. They are a very religious group that never got caught up in the messes of show biz. They kept their morals and integrity intact.
I'm 61 and have loved this group since I was 10 years old. My 40 year old son saw your "One Bad Apple" and said, "Mom, Amber's mom sounds so much like you." This really makes me smile.

i remember the osmonds from my childhood - this was by far my favourite song of theirs!
Over the years various death, heavy, groove metal bands have covered the song. This song was an early example of environmental pollution concerns. At the time a few countries banned the song because of their misinterpretation that the song was about heroin (‘Horse’ was another word for heroin) or drug usage.

You got it. Donny had a whammy pedal hooked to the keyboard. I lived in SLC in 1979 and saw the family in person. Best concert I've been to. They could do everything from soft ballads, to pop, R&B, gospel, and hard rock. Amazing, and during a time when music was transitioning away from the disco/country pop era.
Osmonds also had a medley called “Motown Special “ (early 1970s)

Woohoo, another Osmond song! They are my absolute favorites, (and how I found your channel in the first place). I love all of their songs. Give "Love Me for a Reason" a shot; it is gorgeous (but really, you can't go wrong with any Osmond song). I'm so glad you are enjoying them too.
Can you do some Jackson 5 reactions? That's a rabbit hole worth exploring. So many songs like "Who's Loving you", The Love You Save", "I'll Be There", Dancing Machine", "Forever Came Today", "Body Language", "Shake Your Body", "Blame it on the Boogie. The list goes on. And with the Jacksons, you have to show them live or recorded to get the full experienceof Michael and his brothers doing their thing!!

The first time I heard this on the radio I went straight out and bought it and almost wore the album down, even though I`d been giving my sister a lot of flak over her obsession with Donny`s Puppy Love🤣
They are extremely talented. Each one plays several instruments. I enjoyed the video where they sang I've Got The Music In Me and played numerous instruments. Their family Christmas shows are also impressive.

I was born in the mid 60's and grew up with The Osmonds. I had never heard this song until now and I'm shocked that they could rock like that.
Back in the day, boys couldn't be seen to like the Osmonds but secretly did. I was a huge Slade fan at the time but I bought Crazy Horses for my sister for Christmas, just so I could listen to it myself.

If you wanna hear them get on a blues grove, you’ve got to check out the live version of “Lazy”! One of my all time favorites🤘It’s a tour de force of the whole band individually and collectively! Ian Gillian was howling like a banshee on those vocals and the band was at there absolute best! This and, 'Goin' Home', are the 2 stand-out different-from-everything-else-they've-ever-done songs that they did, which surprises most people who hear them for the first time.
Going home is nothing compared to “Traffic in my mind and The last days”. Those 2 songs are better than crazy horses.
As a little kid, watching early seventies a TV show in the Netherlands, the Osmonds came live playing in the show, playing Crazy Horses.
I was in chock.
In a positive way.
The were on tour in Europe and the song became in the top of many music lists in Europe

I love Crazy Horses! Jay doing the lead....WOW! Two more "rockin" songs I'd suggest are Hold Her Tight and One Way Ticket. They rock, and Jay's drumming in it is amazing! In the 70s, Jay was voted one of the top 10 drummers in the nation!
I was born in 1970, so I grew up in the era when they were huge, and my 3 sisters lost their minds over them.
I had a massive crush on Marie Osmond, and watched their show with the family. But I got in to heavy metal young, and prefer rock and metal.
However, I came across them again recently and really could appreciate their talent. They can sing, play, and dance. And they were genuine good people, happy, loved their family, and appreciated their fans. Their energy is impressive. Look up "Osmond at Ohio state fair". Crazy energy. And the video brings back memories of a great decade.
There's a family band from the 80s that I don't believe you guys have touched yet. And it would be a travesty to overlook them. The group is called, THE JETS. Trivia: The band's name was taken from the Elton John song, "Bennie and the Jets". They made such great music. It was too bad they got screwed over by their label.

Donnie’s favorite color is purple so everyone wore who loved Donnie loved purple and wore purple!! The reason all of them know every instrument is because their parents sent each one to lessons to learn a different instrument and they would then teach other!! The instrument Donnie learned was piano!
“Hold Her Tight” is also a great rock song. I’ve seen them in concert many times over the years. And they were very approachable. They would come out of their busses in the parking lot after a concert in their later years (after they were no longer teen idols) to talk to the fans. I actually spoke to Merrill and he was very sweet and appreciative of all their fans.
I never was a big fan of the Osmonds, but... OMG!!! I have never heard this song myself. Wow!!! I can DIG IT big time❤❤
See that's the thing. People who weren't their fans, and only ever heard their pop stuff, that was played on the radio, never actually delved into their albums. They just wrote off The Osmonds as bubblegum pop. There are MANY great songs on their early 1970's albums, that could have been major hits, if they had been released as singles. And many of their more rocking tunes were released over in Europe. Where, to this day, they are a highly respected "Rock" group.

The keyboard Donny was playing was a YC-30 Yamaha combo organ with the portamento strip. That squealing sound was made with the strip. That strip allows the player to move quickly from one note to another with their fingers so that the sounds kind of merge together. So Donny slides his fingers across the strip and then when he gets to the top, he adds some vibrato by moving his fingers back and forth quickly over a small area at the top. It's a very cool effect and not something that had been done at the time in very many songs when this song came out. The whole Crazy Horses album had a lot of very cool rock songs.
One of the best tunes of the 70s - love it 🙂 They did good ballads as well, check out 'Love Me For A Reason' and 'Let Me In'.
In the late 1980s Donny had a comeback and released new music. Two singles were SOLDIER OF LOVE and SACRED EMOTION. You should give them a listen.

I'm loving that you guys love the groups that I grew up loving all my life!!! It is so fun watching you react to my favorites!! Thank you guys for the smile on my face now. You guys help me get through some hard days. I take care of my mother that has Alzheimers and my husband that has Pulmonary Fibrosis and is seriously ill. And having your reactions to look forward to gives me joy.

I also grew up with the Osmonds and one you should see is the live video of Marie Osmond,their sister singing Paper Roses and Doony and Marie did some great duets.One other famous family band at the same time was The Cowsills, the famiy band that the TV show The Partridge Family was made from. Keep up the great work you both do.

Jay wrote a musical "The Osmond Musical". it toured in Great Britain last year. He came out and did a curtain call to Crazy Horses. You should check it out for fun. The play has lots of Osmond songs in it. I HOPE it comes to the States!!

You can totally see why we carved time out on Sat mornings to watch them, Jackson 5 as well. The Donnie and Marie had a weekly variety show. Show around bands was very popular, after the success of The Monkees. Another band that we watched on Sat was the Scottish band Bay City Rollers. I know I am jumbling up years, the 70s was a great time to be a kid. And yes, I had a pair of sparkly, purple knee high socks I wore as much as I could, and definitely wore them Sat when I watched them. Marie was more country music, so the theme song for their variety show started with Marie singing "I'm a little bit country," and Donnie's line was "I'm a little bit rock and roll..." Dang, now I'm going to find the rabbit holes for all these shows.
Love the Osmonds. My bedroom wall was papered with all their faces. Still have most of their albums.
The Osmonds are one of the original American Music Families. They were raised in it. They danced and sang old songs on the Andy Williams show weekly. Much like your boys the BeeGees...music was all they knew and like pros they changed and moved with the times quite successfully. They saw The Jacksons and said "We can do that!" and so on.
Actually, the Jackson’s used to watch them for dance moves. They were good friends.

The organ Donnie was playing his a feature that let's you slide through the notes instead of playing one key at a time. That's why you see him slide his hand from the middle of the range up to the high notes, back and forth.

This song is the first time that The Osmond Brothers had a song that is a pure rock song. The song did peaked at the #14 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart back in the late summer of 1972. For the first time, Jay Osmond sing the lead vocals. This song is a definitely banger indeed!!!
Loved hearing about Amber's mom remembering Donny and his purple socks. Bringing back lots of memories. How excited we would be when The Osmond Brothers were going to be on a TV show. Donny was my cousin's favorite. I liked him, but my favorite teen idols were first Bobby Sherman and then later David Cassidy. I remember there was a magazine called Tiger Beat that had silly little "articles" and lots of pictures of all of these teen idols. Also saw Donny in a musical called Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat. He was fantastic and the show was great. Highly recommend it. Saw it in Chicago.

Donnie had 2 big solo hits in the late 80s you might like, one was ...Soldier of Love . I don't recall the title of the other song but it was from the same album.

I'm so glad you finally are enjoying a band I've listened to since I was 9 (55 now). I love this song. If you want to get into Donny's solo music my favorite is The Twelfth of Never.
Also there's another band you might enjoy. Tony DeFranco and the DeFranco Family Heartbeat It's a Love Beat.

The Osmonds started singing as early as they could manage it in church and when their parents and congregation realized what teneted singers they were they were cultivated and raised to be one of the world's first bubblegum boy bands.
Haha, love it. I went to see the Osmonds play in Brighton UK about 10 years ago and they played this one three times, beginning, middle and end of the show. I can still remember seeing it on TV for the first time in the 70s too and being amazed
