- ***Early this morning, through the Internet, I learned of the passing of my one time good friend, Chrissy Amphlett after a long battle with cancer. While we weren't close, bosom buddies, when in Australia, through Mark, I met this very special young woman. The character she portrayed in the clubs as a Divinyl was not who she was. This was a "show business" In our eyes, she was a warm, friendly, very talented and somewhat quiet and thoughtful human being who loved life. She will be sorely missed by those who were fortunate enough to know her and love her. Our deepest condolences go out to her American husband and her Australian family and the many thousands of friends and fans who will sorely miss her and never forget this very talented woman. Rest in Peace dear Chrissy, it was our honor to have known you, and to call you "friend."
Judge Stuart Namm (Ret)***
Well over 20 years ago as I mentioned in my South Pacific video, I met Mark McEntee, one of the principals of the then very popular Australian rock group, "The Divinyls," on a flight from Los Angeles to Sydney, Australia. My dear departed wife, Lenore, and I were invited to his home at the head of Sydney Harbor for a day, where we were introduced to the lead singer of the then very well known musical group, Chris Amphlett. Mark and Chris, besides being the principals of "The Divinyls," were close friends and neighbors. Lenore and I became good friends with them, and when they told us that they were going on tour in the United States we went to see them perform at a popular rock club in New York City, and when the group was scheduled to perform on Long Island, where we lived at the time, we spent an afternoon with Mark showing him the sites of Suffolk County, like Port Jefferson harbor. As we walked the streets of Port Jefferson, Mark was recognized by several young people on the streets. The then very handsome and svelte Mark was hard to miss, especially with his trademark long hair and tight fitting leather pants. After we returned Mark to the rented tour bus, later that day we were their guests at a theater where they were scheduled to perform that night on the south shore of Long Island in picturesque Sag Harbor located on nearby Peconic Bay. As can be seen in this video, we were invited backstage to say "hello" once again to Chris Amphlett, the lead singer of the group which at that time had a very well known hit song which went to No. 4 on the "Billboard" pop chart, the very sensual "I Touch Myself.." At the time, it was being played regularly on MTV, with many visual images of Chris on the screen as they performed their biggest hit to date. As a friend always armed with a video camera, I was granted permission by Mark, Chris and the tour manager to video their entire performance, and was stationed alone in the front of the balcony from where I had a great view of the entire performance. As in my earlier videos, the taping is somewhat primitive as I was still shooting on VHS tape with one camera and no tripod, and the spot lighting was too intense for the camera lens. It was long before I began shooting, as I do today, in full 1920 x 1080 high definition on my trusty SONY. However, the sound and the live performance provide, I believe, true images and the magnificent rock and roll sound of "The Divinyls," Chris Amphlett, Mark McEntee and their American back-ups in their prime as world renowned rock & roll performers, especially with their major hit, "I TOUCH MYSELF." Although they have had some setbacks over the years, hopefully one day they will be back on stage together, and the world will then see the immense talent of the great "Divinyls" once again.
Mark McEntire did, by far, one of the greatest guitar solos in Rock history when they played, Love School at this concert.
It is a damn shame they are not recognized much anymore.
And yes, The Divinyls should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Agreed 💯
37:48 Just listened to that solo because of your comment. You are so right! Thanks for keying us in on that one.
Chrissie looks stunning ! I love her quirky hand gestures and body movements .
McEntee sure could play the guitar. No shredding, just harmony, melodics, etc. What a talent.
Great rendition of Pleasure and Pain. What a great musical duo Mark and Chrissy were. Thanks
Just found some very old VHS video that I shot at Mark's home from his TV set during our visit to Australia. Mark and Chrissy were showing us video that Mark had copied when they were younger and performing on Australian TV. It is precious and if I can manage the technology, I will copy it to my UA-cam site. Hwever, it may be a while. Stay tuned, and thanks for your love of the "Divinyls.".
Stuart Namm I and surely others would love to see this--hopefully...:))
+Stuart Namm Any progress with that VHS tape? ;-) . Depending where you live, there are places that will transfer VHS to DVD for you if you lack RCA inputs on your own computer.
+steveolus dont hold your breathe, sounds like a load of bullshit, pretending to know the band,im calling bullshit
+Stuart Namm...I clearly see the obvious connection between friends that for me adds the greater value and lends a special uniqueness to these videos that is to be be found nowhere else on any youtube posting. I want to sincerely thank you for sharing in this way the wonderful personal relatoinship you and your dear wife had with Chrissy and Mark. Both videos (warts and all) are precious and priceless to the many Divinyls fans around the world who search for any little tid-bit, let alone something as marvelous as this....and I think you've gained the affection of many by doing so. I fully understand the passion fans have for Chrissy, Mark and Divinyls and I share it ....I sometimes laughingly refer to it as ''Divinylitis''...a very pleasant but demanding condition that I thoroughly enjoy! Chrissy brought to the stage qualities that made every performance a theatrical and cinematic treat....she was ALWAYS bigger than life. I know some of the comments are rather terse and abrupt, but I would simply ascribe that to the enthusiasm and love that many of us have for this amazing band and it's principals...Mark and Chrissy. You see, Judge, when it comes to most things Divinyls, we're absolutely insatiable and more is never enough....
I still Love them !!!!!
Wow...44:30 Unbelievably great! Chrissy's Vox and Presence! 🔥
THANKS FOR THE UPLOAD! 🇦🇺 🇺🇲
⭐ R I P Beautiful and Special Lady ⭐
Are you American hun?
Thanks mate, 👍Saw them back in the Day, Chrissy, 🥰 front of stage was the place to be for a young man at a Divinyls show, 🤩R.I.P. Chrissy,
I read Chrissy's biography a while back. The Divinyls story is one of the more sad band histories. It feels like they only got to enjoy a small portion of the success they deserved. For me Chrissy is the most magnetic front woman I can recall... such sex appeal. And I never saw them live unfortunately. She reminds me of Michael Hutchence in that respect. The rest of the band may as well be invisible. What a legend!🤘
Agree 💯❤
I was close to Chrissy. I still miss her, especially her energy. We spent many an hour and drank a drink or two together.
It was a hell of a time we spent together...
One band I never got to see live and I could kick myself. Chrissy, you were a young kid’s total fantasy. It broke my heart to hear about what she went through at the end before she passed away. Rest In Peace sweet new wave princess. Your music lives in our hearts.
I’m an older Aussie who saw Divinyls live often. It’s always wonderful finding unknown/unseen gigs and this one is a most pleasant surprise Stuart, thanks for sharing. RIP Chrissy.
The best & hottest chick singer around Sydney in the 80s.
One Aussie to another. Totally agree 💯.
Much respect.😊

I had tickets to see them on this tour in Detroit, but the night of the show I got stuck at something I'd been told would end early enough to comfortably make it to the show in time. By the time I was able to leave, rush to pick up my girlfriend, drive downtown, park, and race to the venue, we walked in literally as they were halfway through their last song. I'd been a fan of theirs since 1984 when I saw them on Rock & Roll Tonite and had taped the simucast of that and their US Festival set, so I'd really wanted to see them. At least this video gives me a bit of a taste of what I missed.
Thanks... 😅😅😅🤟🏼🤟🏼🤟🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
She was truly amazing to hear and eye candy galore, Us young Aussies, at the time, loved coming to their concerts, she never disappointed. Never an off note or an off night, unlike some other bands which finally got their shit together, she was a spunk !!
Man, for a band to sound this tight and perfectly in sync without edition is so rare. The Divinyls is obviously one of the greatest bands of the eighties era, fronted by the best front woman in fucking rock history Christine Joy Amphlett. All the incarnations of the band had it and got it. And then you hear Crissy asking the audience "You're gonna have sex tonight?, you're gonna have sex with a stranger?". Blessings, admiration and lots of respect to Mark and the rest of the boys that conquer each and every stage they performed. You managed to engraved yourselves in our souls.
You seem to enjoy "You're gonna have sex tonight?, you're gonna have sex with a stranger?", like it is some sort of highlight??? I don't get it. I luv the Divinyls but do you think this is a BLESSING requiring admiration or am I taking this the wrong way? Like F a stranger .... its a 'blessing'?
Yes, thanks for saying
I would like to say this. Never met Chrissy Amphlett in person, and I know there stage/music business self is not the same as her privet self. However I feel the stage Amphlett should be taken with respect and be an example of a woman holding her own in a productive light.

Love in the80s
I was so immersed into this concert,I can say proudly I saw them probably a dozen times in small pubs & clubs in Sydney.
Australia 🇦🇺 in the 80s.
This is not her best performance, she was a bit pissed that nobody could stand & rock out.
RIP Chrissy 🙏
Thanks for the memories.
Chrissy será siempre la verdadera reina del rock, lamentablemente muchos no la conocieron. Descansa en paz, Chrissy
I also thank you for posting this video. Chrissy will be sorely missed and I will always remember her as one of my all-time favorite rocker girls. Rest In Peace.
Wow! I've never seen this concert before, thank you so much for uploading this! I love the Divinyls and I adore Chrissy, she's one of the most wonderful women in the world not to mention how beautiful she is.
What an amazing video! I just finished watching all 64 minutes and it was certainly a fantastic show. The setlist was a treat, they played nearly every track off their self-titled album.

Saw The Divinyls in 1995, supported by Joan Jett, @ Coogee Bay Hotel. Great, Great night. Was a POM backpacking around Australia at the time. Great days! RIP Chrissie. Love you xxx
SilverSurfer it was a shame that it was a period that Chrissy and Mark were at Breaking point
Chrissy is/was the best at what she did.
Mate....thank you so much for sharing this awesome footage of one of the most talented rock groups of all time.
The best of the divinyls here.
Boy did Chrissy put on a DANN good concert, sorry KICK ASRSE concert.
You're a still missed greatly till this day!
Rest In Peace Chrissie Amphlett.🙏🌺🇦🇺
How cool! I saw them on this tour on the East End of Long Island, way out in the town called Greenpoint. School of Fish opened. It was packed. & Chrissy & Mark rocked!
saw them 3 times, twice in 88, and 07, the bass player in this recording is Jim Hilbun (Ex Angels/Angel City)
59:08.
Nobody (then or now) could/can convey that amount of sheer erotica with a song.
Chrissie was a one of a kind unique talent.
I touch my self. ❤
I saw the Divinyls once about 1990 University of Tasmania and can still picture them. Great memories.
Wow! Thank you. Just amazing. I was fortunate enough to see them live at Taree NSW RSL (the Rissole) in 1989.
You did a great job recording this!!!! Chrissy could out rock them all....THANK YOU!!!
I was not fortunate enough to be at the show - thanks for sharing.

This is probably the best live performance of them on YT. Thanks so much for posting!
thank you for this Stuart. It is a fantastic record of the performance of Chrissy and the band, and those of us who are long time fans of Chrissy greatly appreciate you sharing it, your thoughts and experiences at this time.

Superb, spectacular, footage of fabulous new wave band!
What a great video! Thank you for sharing!.Not to compare but I was watching Shirley Manson/Garbage videos since reading about her arguments with some dumb ass, as of late and I thought of Chrissy. I had no idea she had moved on! Very sad news! I bought Desperate (on cassette LOL) sophomore year of high school and it blew my socks off!! HER VOICE!! OMG HER VOICE!!! Much respect for her! I have Desperate on CD that I bought years ago and it will always remain a favorite!!! You go girl!! Happy journeys!!
I hope you are still rockin' on somewhere else!!! And I'm pretty sure you probably are!
Thanks for sharing your music with us!!!!!!
Stuart: Thanks a lot for sharing this. God Bless you Chrissy.
Best wishes from Argentina
The Late Great Chrissy Amphlett, And The Divinyls! "Aussie, Aussie, Oy, Oy, Oy!"
dirk diggler .....yes indeed, (as an Australian) all that silly nonsense really annoys me. I particularly dislike “Straya”, it makes us sound like a bunch of “yobbos” who can’t speak the language.
Bugger Me! Chrissy Friggin' Amphlett.... who knew?.....and there I was thinking..........
Thank you for your kind comments about my good friends Mark and Chris. The last communication I had with Mark was after he had moved to Perth where I believe he is still, with his wife, in the "rockers" clothing business. As you may know, Chrissy, when last I spoke to her, was living in New York City with her American husband. They were then talking about a possible revival of the band and going on tour, but I'm aware of Chris's health problems, so I wonder whether this will ever happen.
Stuart Namm, thanks for sharing this great moment in time. I've shared it into my FB group "Chrissy Amphlett & Charley Drayton Fan Group".
That's great. The wonderful and talented Chrissy should never be forgotten. I am so proud of my small part in keeping them out there for everyone to enjoy. It's one thing to hear their music. It is another to see them in action! Thanks for your comment, and God bless!
Rock On! :-)
***** Interesting-I have a grandson, a high honors graduate of University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, with majors in English and Performing Arts, Josh Wolonick. In his senior year at UNC, he directed a full blown version of Shakespeare's "Julius Caeser," which was incredible. He has written a financial column of the Internet at a site called "Minyanville," which has now closed down, at the same that he auditions for commercials and off Broadway shows. This summer he is teaching acting at the North Carolina Governor's School, after which he will return to Manhattan and continue to pursue a very difficult path. His significant other is also an actor, as well as a costume designer, and she also lives in the Big Apple, and directed several shows at UNC. Acting is a tough road to travel, but they are resigned to it, and he spent one summer studying Shakespeare at Oxford in the UK. As I see it, his only shortcoming is his height- 5'3"- but an incredible performer and very motivated! You can check out some of the videos from childhood and as an adult of him on my UA-cam channel. Perhaps you have some pointers, although he is well connected to many other actors, graduates of the University of North Carolina.
Stuart Namm Cool! Yes a tough road alright! My pointer is to 'guard your heart' and screen who you work with before deciding on a project. As opposed to the bygone era where actors proudly took any work they could get, these days everybody is a "filmmaker" and it can be challenging knowing who to trust and invest your time in. Oh, and the other tip, "Learn your lines and don't bump into the furniture" Terry Norris, Cop Shop
Mesmerizing!
Was this recorded on the East End of Long Island? If it was, I was at the gig. School of Fish opened for them.
Sexiest voice in rock, r.i.p. chrissie.
Jenn: Thanks for visiting with Chrissie and the Divinyls. She was as nice a person as you would ever want to meet, and her death was such a tragic loss. It was our pleasure to have known both Chrissie and Mark.
Stuart Namm I am so glad you knew them. I never met them, but had the EXTREME pleasure of seeing Divinyls in the early '80s in Syracuse NY. One of the most memorable concert experiences of my life, and I would have loved to have been able to meet her.
Thank s !!!!!
Of course, I never gave a thought to the rarity of this video tape. I have paled in on UA-cam so that the world can, hopefully in perpituaity, view and listen to the great talent of my wonderful friends, Mark McEntee, Chris Amphlett, and the once great "Divinyls." Hopefully, this will encourage them, despite some serious problems, to return again to the worldwide stage and the audience which loves them
was this in Greenpoint Long Island? I was there. School of fish was there.
wow. thanks for sharing this. what a performance. 8 June 1991
hope Chrissy would not mind it shown now... did she ever see it?
Christina Amphlett's stage presence reminds me of Ruby Starr's. They commanded your attention and got it. Both had powerful presence, intensity, and voice. Both now have sadly passed Chrissy with her MS and breast cancer and Ruby died of lung cancer and a brain tumor.
+KnEpH131 Thank you so much for your comment. I knew them quite well at one time but I had no reason to believe that Chrissy had a serious physical ailment. The two of them were very special people, and it troubles me that Mark no longer responds to my efforts to reach out to him in Perth.
Great
Iva Davies just announced that Chrissie has passed on, via the Icehouse fb.page.. =((
Check out Temperamental a Divinyls tribute band on youtube, seen them last week, f'kin awesome, the lead singer does a great job.
Where on Long Island was this?
No tripod? How did you enjoy the show? We appreciate this.
I saw them at the club Malibu Lido Beach Ny...does anyone know if this is the show
Thank you so much for posting, do you know how rare this kinda stuff is!
My so beautiful. I remember following her around at the world expo in Brisbane. Also many live perfomances. No I am not a storker just love Chrissie.
Dav Nix: I presume that you live in Australia, specifically Perth. If you happened to be in the store again, please tell Mark that Stuart says that he is disappointed that he hasn't heard from him in a long time, and that I'm very disappointed! Judge Stuart
Punksie: For Chrissy's sake, whom I know to be a wonderful person and a very talented entertainer, I would appreciate it if you would put a link to my UA-cam page on your very interesting page so that their fans can get to see them again.Judge Stuart Namm (Ret) Thanks so much.
for a vhs recording , get the program , they usually do cassettes ,and vynal,, all you need is a graphics card with video for the lead from vhs player ,audio goes to audio,,.. tis easy ,,..record into what format you want and you have it , take out his ,etc ,,..
Hello Stuart Namm
I'm a video producer with The AGE (a newspaper based in Melbourne, Australia). As part of The AGE Music Victoria Awards (annual, local music awards) Chrissy is to inducted into the hall of fame. I'm putting together a tribute reel for the event and was hoping to use some footage of the Divinyls playing live. Is it possible for me to use the material you shot in 1991 in the video tribute? The event is happening on Wednesday 21st November. Any assistance you could offer me would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Tim Mummery
Please know Chrissie Amphlett was NOT born in 1959, byt years earlier. Also, there was NO Mark McEntee, just Shturcite guitarist Petur Gyuzelev with a pseudonym.
Fokker TISM .......Chrissy was born in 1955, making her 59 when she died, still too young.
I don't think the USA quite understood Australian pub rock. It was huge in OZ but it took the states many years to understand. They where the king dicks but had there buts kicked by Oz rock bands and actors. Did you hear of AC/DC?
Sure did!
Seen acdc with bon on a cold night in winter in 77 saw dragon pub circuit divinyls backing up cold chisel pub circuit. Lost count seeing cold chisel around the clubs. Inxs saw at Sydney entertainent center.
Could have been bigger in the U.S., but broke to cardinal rules: 1) Poor management 2) Not keeping band member relationships plutonic 3) Reckless drug intake. RIP, Chrissy - one of the greatest.
+steveolus If i can remember correctly Amphlett experimented with Heroin but never injected it.
I was referring to the band in general. It's been a while since I read her bio (I do remember her admitting just two drinks would send her over the edge). I'm pretty sure they lost the original bass and a guitar player to the heavy stuff. It's just sad they didn't break a bit bigger in the USA - they were much more than "I Touch Myself", and like every other 80's band were killed off by "Grunge". Underworld was a good record and it wasn't even released in the States.
Underworld is a very underrated album indeed but unfortunately it was released in Australia shortly before Divinyls' unofficial demise in late 1996 which Chrissy and Mark ended their 16 year collaboration due to ongoing feuds with each other. It would take them a decade for them to talk to each other again when Divinyls were inducted into the Aria Hall of Fame in 2006. Underworld was originally going to be released by late 1995 but was delayed repeatedly due to ongoing production problems.
@@steveolus The original bass player was Jeremy Paul who joined after leaving Air Supply. He seemed to have a habit of leaving bands when they were on the verge of really breaking out. As far as I know he live somewhere in the Snowy Mountains and is still gigging with a covers band that includes Gunther Gorman on guitar.
Probably, because I was the only person up in the balcony. But my eyes were fixed on the viewfinder on my video camera, so I'm not really certain.
.
Where in Sag Harbor was this concert? What year?
I'm sorry that at age 85 I have forgotten the name of the theater but it was in the middle of Sag Harbor. Thanks for your interest! Judge Stuart Namm (Rer)
Is that her waving at you at the end ?? lol
Wonder if went commando in that skirt?
Stuart, The Divinyls were a musical band that consisted of a singer, an average guitar player and session musos, often hired for the night. I filled in for a totally wasted bass player one night. The band were OK, but the singer was brilliant. Christine was a wonderful person and a great performer. I really liked her. I still owe her for a burger.
Average guitar player?..your wrong..no one on earth agrees with you.
Ah yes.. reality check...Mark Macantee is a brilliant song writer/ player....his phrasing...melodies etc revolve around Chrissie's ethereal presence and unique singing voice....he is quite underated.
Jacques, I was working the Sydney music scene both playing and renting out sound and lights at that time. I would put to you that the original lineup was a true band in every sense of the word that later morphed into the situation you are alluding to. As for Marc's guitar playing I saw him play away from his comfort zone at places like the Musicians Club with Leon Berger where he more than held his own playing over Stevie Wonder's changes and other fairly complex tunes. He was succeeded in that gig by Rex Goh if I remember rightly. As for Ms. Amphlett I was renting sound to and running FOH for a young band who had aspirations bigger than their abilities so I took them to see the band. After the gig I said to the young lady vocalist, can you compete with that because that's the standard if you are going to quit your day job. She knew she couldn't and didn't.
@@paulbradshaw431 that's a bit harsh, mate... no one can match Chrissy for stage presence!! 😂
@@paulbradshaw431 Mate, the original line up was phenomenal.
Would you know why Harv left the band? I was shattered to learn he died recently. Gutted. One of my favorite drummers ever, always mystified me why he left in his prime. The drummer in this video don't come close in my musically uneducated opinion, no offense intended, but in my lay man opinion Harv is a bloody hard act to follow. ( luv to hear other drummers take on it).. I put him up there with the best I have ever heard ,depth, 'subtle', subdued and powerful AND restrained all at the same time if you get what I mean, and although the last drummer (Chrissy's partner?) was not bad I do not think any of the post Harv drummers were near as good, or had that deep restrained feel that made the band. Man ... Elsie! (a bloody work of art), Science Fiction, Boys in Town of course! Victoria. That's part of what made them.
Also do you remember the old Tivoli on George Street, where I first saw Divinyls in the very, very early 80s before it was closed down?. Really small venue, low stage (like most of the old Oz Rock venues) The best gig I have ever seen.
Of course man Grossman is 'legendary' for want of a better word and well documented but Harv is a mystery to me.
blend good.... beat good . music good words not heard ... maybe you are too loud .... hear a voice no words....
Good concert but leaves out at least 5 or 6 of their great tracks.
These guys have only one good song, the last one on this set
Divinyls ,, yes ,, The Divinyls? NO!! show respect when using someone's name.
Yeah I think the camera man was smoking to muchs choof it such a shame that someone had recording through of a TV
They are crap live..lve heard cover bands playing em way better..
I am a fan but did she lip-synch in this show !
is out of sync, you can use an easy video editor program..
Never lip-synched in her life. Chrissie had too much integrity for that. Saw them many times live, always brilliant. The sound quality here does not do them justice at all but it's good to see just the same.
Yes. She is ALL that. Brilliant. ..... Gone.
Fun Story! Thanks for sharing the show too. Really nice work on the "quality" transfer. Can you imagine if you didn't film this, you'd be kickin' yourself every day. Ten years before this show Divinyls released their first album "Desperate"...that's the album everyone should know, it's a masterpiece. We still have our copy on vinyl and it still lands on our turntable atleast twice a month, and there has been times when it just stayed on there for 3 weeks straight. Cheers&Thanks!
