I loved Helen Slater as Supergirl. She brought such heart to the role. I adored this movie as a child and still do to this day, even though it seems a bit cheesy nowadays. I loved the special effects and the flying sequences.

I watched this movie back in 86 in my country I was a kid, loved it , eventually I migrated the US and went on to become an actor my self, as i watch it again beautiful memories come back,....how little I knew about acting...it has some cheese scenes, over all the production wasnt good.but it's always good to remmenese.
i never saw this helen actress as a sexpot especially considering the way she portrayed super girl as this virtuous, confident, dignified upstanding passionate and serious woman not like melissa benoit’s Goofy mild mannered self deprecating version which i apologize maybe it’s the writers and director who are silly and maybe melissa is a very virtuous person but in free speech opinion i just feel her version of super girl does the character a disservice i’m just speaking as someone who has read the comics for, oh, FORTY YEARS!!!!!!

The cinematography is better on these older, Superman and Supergirl movies, look how the scene is lit, it makes her costume pop. The new Superman movie, I am not even sure if you can even call it color, it's so drab!
Dude ... Supergirl is one of the most critically and commercially panned superhero movies of all time! Right up there with Catwoman, Batman & Robin, and Howard the Duck!

There is a highly complex and legal reason why the American version of Supergirl was panned. It had to be chopped to bits in short order before it came to the U.S. because of the Suskind's (long story). What was left was a fragment of what the movie was in London a few months earlier. This was a movie that the critics should have done their homework on. Nearly 10 years ago, I think, Blu-Ray came out with what was nearly the original version of the movie and that version has had far more critical acclaim than what was released in the states.
@Racbir Singh That's true and I would have loved that but, the whole point of this movie was Supergirl leaving her home planet Argo City because the Omegaheddron was lost in space ending up in Earth and she only traveled to Earth just to get the Omegaheddron back and once she returned back to Argo City with the Omegaheddron, Argo City got it's power back where I would assume she would have no interest in going back to Earth. Especially she was probably not attached to anyone or anything on Earth since the girl school groundskeeper named Ethan fell in love with her and she didn't show in interest in loving him back. So for that, it would be unknown how they would make a sequel to this film. However, one idea could be that her cousin Superman comes to Argo City to ask for help in fighting Lex Luthor and she agrees to help her cousin.
Great sequence. While the US theatrical version does deserve scorn, the Director's Cut is a far better film overall. This was always my favorite part, as I love the effects and camera movements for when Kara gets imprisoned and then flies away to the Phantom Zone.
This movie was So Underrated when it came out: it has a Fantastic plot, lead actress and actors: i really cheated myself by not seeing it at the time. having said that:1984 was like the busiest year of my life up to that point: lots of ups and some downs and now i see a very special relationship i had missed out on at the time that i should have went for if it wasn’t for my own stupidity stupidity stupidity and it may have changed my life for the better if i had just given it a chance: this crazy year 2020 has made me so emotional
She fell onto a trap. Same Crystal prison like the 3 Kryptonian Criminals like Ursa, Non and General Zod. Memories from 1st Superman movie in 1979. My skin got bristled when Supergirl yelled inside the prison while Selena was kissing Ethan in front of her. Then Supergirl was carried to Phantom Zone and then she lost her powers, same as her famous cousin Superman (RIP),
So that is the Phantom Zone. The people who talked about it in a recent vid on the various prisons in DC said it was an awful, desolate place, not one you'd want to find yourself in under any circumstance. Boy were they right about that!
They had a PERFECT Supergirl in Helen Slater, she was beautiful, had that innocence that made her a natural. They should have given her at least another movie to see if that one would have done better. I agree with Utubienut that they should have had Christopher Reeve have a surprise cameo before she went back to Argo City, it would have spiced up the movie and made a perfect springboard for a sequel.

@londongamer Actually the way it sort of billows I believe that it's a thick layer of fog laying really close to the ground that just happens to look like some sort of slime. The sound effect when she hit sounded like she hit a solid mass like rock rather than some material that would give way like mud or anything along those lines.
Though I didn't care for this film, (and it was an effort to get to the end of it), aside from the romance , I thought Helen Slater was very good at acting the part. She also brought a nice, appropriate innocence to the character too.

They tried to Get Chris for this film, actually. But he said no bc he felt he had done all he could do with the character, if I remember what he said in an interview correctly. They had to up his payday and give him some creative control in order to get him back for S4. The whole 'nuclear disarmament' storyline was his idea as it was something he felt strongly about irl, but even he later admitted it was a huge mistake in his memoir Still Me.

You got to love the fact that the lead villains of Superman and Supergirl were off "Bonnie and Clyde".
