- This was about as much of a surprise to me as it might be to you! But with the Hilux being in the workshop for maintenance. I figured it might be a good idea to pick up a second vehicle, that can be my backup overlanding vehicle incase of something major happening in the future or have a daily drive that is a bit more sensible. So when this vehicle came up at the right price, I jumped! I landed up with a Toyota Landcruiser 100 Series VX Limited with a 4.2 1HDFTE a Straight Six Turbo diesel beast! This Cruiser has crossed Africa, Cape To Cairo and back Twice in its past. So that shows its more than capable for whatever I throw at it! It's been neglected in more recent years and deserves a bit of love! So I have come to my friends at Terrain Tamer to find all the bits and pieces I could ever need for my very own Toyota Landcruiser!

I love my 80 Series, and I was not surprised you fell in love with a Land Cruiser. The 100 Series is the most underrated Series when it comes to the Land Cruiser line up. Most don't regard it as good offroad as the 80 Series, nor as comfortable as the 200 Series. But as an overlander/tourer, with real 4WD capabilities, it is very good. The upside of it being underrated, prices in the used market are not as high as the other series. In Australia, you can get a newer 100 Series with less kms for less price, than an older, higher kms 80 Series. Congratulations. 👍

I'm so envious of the vehicle choices you guys have in Africa. All the good Landcruisers (The forthcoming American version is to much) and Hilux's to boot. We have an old RAV4 as our off-roading rig but I'd love to have the option to get something like this.

Feels like the stars are sending you may way. When I first bought my Hilux you started the build project. I just bought a 120prado and then you get the cruiser 🙆🏾♂️, I trust you to take us through the build project also. One thing that had me baffled was the comfort of these cruisers when compared to the modern trucks

Congratulations. I own a 105 and love it to bits. Great vehicles but they are getting old so you will eventually end up going through the whole thing. Its addictive and very expensive but I'm happy for you ❤

9:41 Do check for FL driveshaft inner boot which needs replacement or in worst case you may be required to put new driveshaft to get rid of one of the clunking noise contributors.

Loved my HJ100R. Had 450k plus on it when I reluctantly sold it. Put 25k kms on it in 3 months around Oz pulling a 2tonne trailer. Replaced the alternator and rear shocks was all. Excellent motor and drive line. A 3inch high performance exhaust and throttle controller will make that ride even more amazing. Upgrade intercooler and transmission cooler maybe.

i have a 1996 80 series 4.2 donkie diesel. 490 000km on the clock and is my daily driver. cruisers are very nice cars for all round driving conditions. ill re spray my car yellow if terreain tamer spoiled me the way they spoilt adrians cruiser. enjoy your car bud. they are great cars regardless of age.

The 100/105 is tip of my heart wrt 4x4. I watched ASPW & Paul Marsh rebuild a 2nd hand one a few yrs ago. (Khaki one) Its a beauty. All the best with your project. Might not always be easy but definitely well worth it but TT is an excellent partner.

Congrats on the LC. Can you perhaps do a budget breakdown of the parts?
Its difficult to do but I will try! My quote for all the parts from toyota for a front to back rebuild of 90% of the important driveline, brakes, suspension, bushes, balljoints basically a full resto, excluding diffs,engine,transmission etc was R120k if I recall correctly; and we havent had to do it all yet.

I'm following this with interest to see how long it takes before the complete Terrain Tamer or ARB catalogue is added for the sake of content.
Well first up I’m just trying to fix the old girl up, so you’re definitely going to see a lot of terrain tamer during that process. I am trying very hard not to go over board, as that isn’t the intention for this vehicle… so I challenge you to keep me in check as the process goes along. But be warned I have an incredible ability to justify almost anything to myself, so I predict there will be resistance!

Hey, I noticed on one of your Botswana trips, you had a Hilux with Maxtraxx fastened to the canopy side door. I have a Bushtech canopy and would like to fit my recovery boards to the canopy side gullwings. Where did you get the mounts to secure the recovery boards?
I am completely surprised about the roadworthy idea in Africa! I've been in African cars with no floors, with doors held on by fencing wire, tyres down to the steel belts, and no-one batted an eyelid!
South Africa has strict rules when changing ownership. (well in theory anyway.)
After that, it is the owners responsibility to maintain it as such but no continuous testing is done UNLESS you are pulled over at random by traffic police.
Terrible tires, no brakes etc will get you towed and impounded. It happens every day, but really only to the very worst vehicles.
Roadworthy’s are only necessary for licensing the car, after that there’s nothing else needed till the car dies! And like most things in Africa, roadworthy’s can also be bought…

I have lightened my 80 series by removing the rear bumper jerry can wheel carrier, and returning the factory bumper.
With all the mods, and two people, it was at 2980 kg.
Top GVM is 3036 ???

What did you pay for it if I may ask? I bought a 2001 4.5 EFI 105 with 208k km on the clock for R162k by accident. Was at the wrong place at the right time. Had to do a little work on it. Fitted OME suspension and replaced all the bushes with terrain tamer bushes. Fitted a snorkel and some new tyres and victron duel battery system.
Sounds awesome! I accidentally paid R130k myself. Saw it on Facebook on Saturday, viewed on Sunday, got Nicky to check on Monday and then drove it home on Tuesday

Actually been surprisingly good so far! I’m a couple months ahead here in the real life, and been up and down to jhb and back to capetown a couple times, vehicle is driving like a dream. We did a lot of work over the month that I got It to get it nice and safe/comfortable! But I am definitely lucky to have good friends at terrain tamer, but when I bought the vehicle I budgeted for fixing it without assistance anyways 🤙🏻 so far still within the budgets, so I’m stoked!

Land Cruiser, it's like a Jeep but for grown-ups.
Don't be alarmed I would rather have that with 500km on it than a new Range Rover. Toyota make lots of great products and are known for making reliable stuff. Just enjoy it.
Omg 650 😂 for someone to tell you what’s wrong with your car where are you from in Australia it’s $80-$100 for a roadworthy and most people won’t charge you if it fails and they will tell you what’s wrong with the car for free
R650 ZAR. That is about $35 US. You pay for your first inspection. They will either pass or fail your inspection. On the second inspection they will only check to see that the issues on the first inspection were carried out. There is a time period the failed issues have to be sorted out from first inspection (normally 30 days). They dont charge you for that second inspection.
Sell that SUV and get an 80 series.
They are just as bad as land Rover's Toyota fan's keep all the faults secret because of their obsession to Toyota same as the Land Rover obsessed I had a 100 and 200 rubbish rubbish rubbish period. You will see in the end

@@RoamOverlanding sorry that I put it so bluntly I owned lots of Toyota land cruisers mostly the older ones they were the best they broke the least the problem is age they all to old and the new ones have gotten way to supposedly advanced and they break even more and the cost's is out of this world a tip diesel engines are the worst 3 problems with them their turbos and they break for Shure just think those things spin thousands a second diesel pump's all ways problem's cost's unbelievable next the diesel engine every time you start that engine the oil gets thicker it's just how it works compaired to a petrol I'm retired don't even drive anymore I walk wife ride's does all the buying she traded her 2003 Suzuki grand Vitara for the 5 door jimny her gv nothing what so ever broke the front brakes lasted 16 years even the air-conditioning worked all 21 years I will probably be dead to give comments on the jimny I can tell you one last comment when I ride with her in the jimny it ride's waaay more comfortable than my lc 200 could dream of especially all the potholes it's unbelievable I'm really sorry but people talk way to much about the lc's
