Great video. The only thing missed is the specific reason for flannels, and why they were in so many thrift shops in the area, thus making them popular. That being the huge logging industry of the Pacific Northwest, and that lumberjacks wore them.

In order for those cothes to be in thrift shops, first they needed to be in stores and in fashion, so his statement is true.
"Grunge" fashion is just fashion that was and is in circulation.
I personally do not care about how those people used to dress in the late 80's early 90's. However, I do care about being comfortable, a flanel is casual, it can hide some dirt that comes from living in a city unlike let's say a white sweater or light single colored garment. It is light weight and comfortable and also warm. If it is too warm I can take it off, if it is somewhat warm, then you can just unbutton the shirt and roll up the sleeves.
It is a versitile and comfortable way of dressing that also looks good. So why not?

I think it’s interesting how grunge does have defining fashion, like I do feel like grunge artists must have thought about what they wore while still being casual. For example, Cobains patched up jeans and specific sweaters. It’s also funny how the “grunge” in runways is obviously unauthentic and dramatized. It is also cool how it’s accessible and easy, but recognizable with certain parts. I think you can still tell if someone is dressing grunge vs causally, because sometimes grunge has some sort of subtle alternative flare.

as someone who lives kinda close to where Cobain grew up, its a pretty working class industrial area. Makes more sense to just buy second hand, warm, and comfy clothes rather than what was “on trend” at the time.. especially if you don’t have any money ..probably contributed to what later was known as the grunge style ..just my two cents :)

I lived in the PNW when grunge came out and that was how we already dressed. It was the grungers copying the rest of us. We spent the 80's thinking it was still the 70's and by the 90's we were back in style.

Dressing for fashion is fine, but I think comfort and utility is much more important. Like, people are playing dress up with costumes - but there are real people out there who just dressed that way because that's what they feel. It's a line between being yourself and trying to fit in to appear cool and relevant. Grunge is not fashion. Grunge word was invented by medias. They used to wear those clothes because they were poor, from countryside where men worked in wood timber factories, working class alcoolics, without much hopes. Kurt said it many times, he couldn' t afford brand new clothes till 91. It became his trademark later.

For example that flanell shirt plus jeans plus binnie hat was taken from early Hardcore Punk fasion and sweater Cobain took from first wave Punk fashion (Anyways he had his style, that kinda "homeless" look).
Torn jeans, combat shoes and to that rolled up trouser legs came from that circle rest came from Alt Rock which was part of scene up to 90's.
And that thing took meansteam fashion industry and press and changed it to neo hippie crap.
In 90's I was wearing flannel shirt with jeans and snickers. Or combination of M65 cargo trousers (olive and woodland) with hoodie and somethimes something on hoodie like t-shirt or sweater or flannel shirt. To that snickers or combat shoes. As jacket bomber jacket or parka jacket.
I has short phase in early 90's with shiny tracksuits which gave me that grabber look😁 and wide jeans hip hop inspired.

But androgyny was shown in nirvana from time to time when they’d wear dresses and some women associated with the grunge scene (even if they weren’t totally grunge) had some androgynous looks. As for Hole, yes, she dresses in babydoll dresses and would be considered grunge still. You could argue that because hard rock is associated with men that just her doing that is somewhat androgynous, idk.

Wait, hang on, grunge fashion ended when grunge ended…right around 95-96ish, I haven’t seen anyone dress in grunge fashion (if it could be called that, it really was anti fashion to be honest, the point was to look the opposite of the highly commercial hair band’s tights and teased hair look, from the late 80s, but was then taken by every large company and made commercial which is what ended grunge) if you see someone today wearing a pair of old beat jeans, a flannel etc etc then they’re just lazy people who don’t care what they look like. There had to have been a better subject to make a video about than “grunge fashion”
