The digital - esp iPhone age has killed subcultures along with youth culture in general…Previously standing upon the frontiers of counterculture and coolness, ‘youth culture’ (if you can even call it that) has degraded into pure conformity and cringe. We now have aesthetics which focus purely on imitation of the superficial and ignore social mobilization and behavior being a defining factors.
To be fair thats how it's been for awhile now. For example 'Grunge' musicians and bands have gone and labeled Grunge as more of a marketing thing. But atleast back then it seemed that people were mimicking a lifestyle, now they're just mimicking the fashion knowing that they aren't really apart of the culture. But then again, both have always been done. Like unless we're talking about tribes then there's always been generations looking for identities in facades of identities.
@@randomguyontheinternet7940 "Grunge" was never a real thing though. It was, as most people know it, a marketing term cooked up by Sub Pop to link a bunch of bands who really had little in common with each other together. There was no lifestyle to mimic.

The civil rights movement led by Americans with disabilities, which eventually led to the passing of the 504 bill and of the Americans with Disabilities Act, is something that I always think about when I hear the word "hippie." (There's a movie called 'Crip Camp' that makes this connection and is very informative; I seriously recommend it.) There's people out there who will participate in the idea and the glamour of an idealistic style of living, but won't stick through with persisting for change. A lot of people can just go home to their middle class houses without much worry... so I think that your ultimate values and goals are really important. There's no point in making flower crowns if we're not going to continue fighting and standing up for a more peaceful future. Of course, it's very hard to get people to think like that when we tend to be scared of backlash when there is a sustained effort to go against current affairs. So many people tend to dabble in the idea of hippie culture as a result of that, I think.

I fully get the hate/disdain towards hippies, self-proclaimed hippies, and modern-day "hippies' but from reading a lot of comments here and on the other video, he's done about the hippie subculture as a whole, I've come to realize that most people don't know what a hippie truly is or the other types of hippies that were around at the time and that continue to be around now, aside from the very good points made in this video, it mainly covers two types of "hippies" the old/new Dirty Hippies, who truly don't contribute to any aspect of society on any level in any positive way, and Commercialized Hippies of old and new, almost no mention of genuine and honest intelligent people who wanted genuine change in non pretentious and progressive ways, anything from the way we treat one another, to having civil arguments and wanting any real change/reform against corruption in all forms of government, and the treatment of one another as human beings. The world is a wild place, and I really don't want to come off as preachy, I just want to put my honest views out there for anyone to have constructive conversation in a civil and peaceful manner, or at least as close as I can on the internet of all places. ✌️
my coworkers thought i was a hippie because i sell weed and had long hair. that was a wake up call for me, shaved my head and blast black flag now, i can’t be mistaken for one of those peace loving pot smokers.
You seem a bit based on this subject. I respect it. I love art, nature and the idea of being free. So I sort of resonate with the idea. But the real world strikes and makes it so hard to actually maintain a hippie lifestyle. Anyway interesting video altought you missed the vietnam and more things.
Hippies, beatniks' hipsters all were branches from bohemianism, a lifestyle that came about when Romani gypsies were camping in the poor part of France in the late 1800s. Poets, Stage actors, artists and singers all shared rooms etc. in that part of town and watched how the gypsies had a love for life and each other, laughing, happy, yet took no interest in the pillars of the communities, religious leaders, not even the laws, they had their own. They lived to a beat of their own drum. These people adopted this same lifestyle and applied to their passions, artists quit worrying what art institutions demanded them to paint and how, poets freed themselves and wrote as they pleased, and actors played parts that were considered indecent. They called it Bohemianism because the gypsies had come from Bohemia. It gave birth to things like Art Nouveau, Klimp and Mucha lived it, Art Deco and changed the course of poetry, acting and the arts as a whole. Beat Niks, Hipsters then Hippies all were branches from the ideology of that lifestyle. Problem with the hippies right away was drugs. The whole idea of peace and love is of good nature, we all like that. But when they read Native Americans used Peyote and other mind-altering things for spiritual contact, they decided to use LSD, weed, and other things to experiment the same contact. Back then, doctors were in argument how these drugs would affect them, and much of the argument was because a lot of younger doctors were using them to. Truth is, by the Summer of Love, it was not really about love and peace, it was about partying, sex, drugs and rock and roll. They were not a group of revolutionists trying to make a better world, they were a bunch of addicts trying to blame anybody and everything on their addictions. Most were average white middle to upper middleclass liberal college kids. They hated conventional American lifestyle and religion yet took handouts from churches and community centers because most blew their money on drugs rather than food. They despised the government, yet many went to free health clinics to be treated for ODs, VD, lice and crabs. The whole hippy facade was made by hippies, like it was a big important help to the culture. We always said it started with peace and love, it ended with the Manson family. Those that didn't OD or just burn out, became capitalist they hated so much. Of course, that's because they grew up and got back to reality. The only thing hippies actually accomplished was to start a drug culture that has and still is destroying America today. Almost all violent crimes, broken homes, single mother's parentless children, mental illness, and the list goes on is due to drugs. Now we have BOHO wannabes that love to dress in extremely too expensive costumes trying hard to look like then, making some capitalist clothing line rich. The real hippy is a myth, it was another liberal idea that did not work. Bohemianism is a life of freedom of self-expression, hippies lived in a freedom of self-indulgence, huge difference between the two. A person of true passion must be left alone to express that. However, if you feel you need drugs of any type to do that, you are dealing with insecurity and are emotionally unstable. If you want to argue that be careful, the first sign of addiction is to defend the drugs and why you use them.....
i would say i over the years have become a sort of hippie. but im more into the 60s-70s hippie music and i feel like hippie or not you should still be clean and not let yourself go. but i do plan on buying a van and traveling one day
Ok as a hippie (I don’t even go as a hippie in public because lots of fake hippies have made it embarsssing to do so) these tiktok hippies should NOT be calling themselves hippies. They most likely get their clothes from SHEIN, judge everyone they see, start fights on twitter, and do everything that a real hippie would NOT do. Now I understand that nobody has perfect behaviors but this is just outrageous. They’re uneducated as well. This is coming from someone who literally grew up in a lower middle class family, too. All my clothes are hand me downs and I have to make my own clothes and sew my clothes so they can fit me. you gotta do a video on rivetheads or industrial metal or something of that nature.
Hey man, just curious but do you have specific sources for the content in this
Either really funny or really scary ahahahahaha that sold me
I fully get the hate/disdain towards hippies, self-proclaimed hippies, and modern-day "hippies' but from reading a lot of comments here and on the other video, he's done about the hippie subculture as a whole, I've come to realize that most people don't know what a hippie truly is or the other types of hippies that were around at the time and that continue to be around now, aside from the very good points made in this video, it mainly covers two types of "hippies" the old/new Dirty Hippies, who truly don't contribute to any aspect of society on any level in any positive way, and Commercialized Hippies of old and new, almost no mention of genuine and honest intelligent people who wanted genuine change in non pretentious and progressive ways, anything from the way we treat one another, to having civil arguments and wanting any real change/reform against corruption in all forms of government, and the treatment of one another as human beings. The world is a wild place, and I really don't want to come off as preachy, I just want to put my honest views out there for anyone to have constructive conversation in a civil and peaceful manner, or at least as close as I can on the internet of all places. ✌️
Can you make a math channel with this kind of editing i need to finish shool this year and your editing is helping with learning stuff
This is an accurate depiction of my life
I am an Angry Hippie. And I approve this video for actually being educational and relatively unbiased.
We like your narrative starts bleak and kills it at the end.
my coworkers thought i was a hippie because i sell weed and had long hair. that was a wake up call for me, shaved my head and blast black flag now, i can’t be mistaken for one of those peace loving pot smokers.
I sincerely hope that that's a joke lmao
They still can't tell me what to do and never will homie.
Can u make a video on jazz pls
As a Whelan who used to take a lot of drugs, the sign at 3:11 like, totally freaked me out man...
Teds are the only real subculture left.
Time to watch on x2 speed so I can be the first person to comment after actually watching the video
Edit:
Interesting.
Would love to see a video on Grateful Dead / deadheads

You seem a bit based on this subject. I respect it. I love art, nature and the idea of being free. So I sort of resonate with the idea. But the real world strikes and makes it so hard to actually maintain a hippie lifestyle. Anyway interesting video altought you missed the vietnam and more things.
You should explain shrimp fried rice next
This guy is just British Cartman, no? 😂
so much hate in a video for no reason. hope all goes well for you all.
I see hippie as a mindset not a lifestyle for me at least
This was the real video narrative that we needed.
That's great grampa, now let's get you back to bed

OK, we get it. People in counter cultures don't shower as much.
i would say i over the years have become a sort of hippie. but im more into the 60s-70s hippie music and i feel like hippie or not you should still be clean and not let yourself go. but i do plan on buying a van and traveling one day
yes
I really apologize to everyone in this video who has met posers who act like this, I really am sorry :/
Didn't the Bohemian movement in the 19th century also influence the hippies? I always see hippies call their style "boho" so it seems like there's a strong connection there.
I read the book electric acid kool aid test when I was in high school
Modren Hippies
People that can afford to be homeless and jobless.
I saw that king gizzard album you used in the beginning. Dint think i didn't see that. I saw it v

This is why I just stick to the music of the hippie era. Hippies are gross but psych rock that’s far out man.
