    As somebody who lives close to Luxembourg, would like to add another contributing reason as to why Luxembourg may have decided to come back: Luxembourgish people (and those from across the borders) go to concerts of Eurovision contestants. Mahmood, Hooverphonic, Duncan Laurance, Salvador Sobral... Plus, they seem to actually watch Eurovision. I haven't talked to too many, but for a country that didn't participate for 30 years, I've come across surprisingly many (young) people who watch it.

    4:39 I was lucky enought to be there, on that day, to watch and cheer for Tali. I had no favorites, I hadn't even heard or knew about any of the contestants prior to that day, my wife did, and she was the one that suggested that we should try and go, to attend the finals, since it would happen right when we were spending part of our vacations in the country, and we would be staying very near Rockhal, the venue where the finals happened. After listening all 8, Tali, the last one to perform, was the one I liked most 😁

    The siren sound is referring to an old Luxemburg fairytale in which music plays a crucial role in guiding and following your instincts to do the right thing. (Melusina) 13:40
    Also the word “fighter” is shorten to represent the Luxembourgish resistance quote “Mir wëlle bleiwe wat mir sinn” (we want to stay what we are), as foreign policies often threatened the existence of Luxembourg and its people throughout its history.
    So even though this song has been written by a non-Luxembourgish songwriter it’s roots and message are deeply anchored with the countries identity.

      Yesss! Do Greece next please! To me, the lyrics have a double meaning and can be read as a message to the homeland from someone who had to leave due to lack of perspectives and expresses the bitterness and nostalgia of feeling abandoned and rejected by the beloved motherland, something in the lines of Croatia's entry, but in a metaphorical way. Like when she says "Where will the wind take us?", or "I pretend to forget your scent/ And everything around me changes suddenly", or "I’ll be coming in and out of your mind/ Because you didn’t give me your hand/ Not even to hold onto" which might hint at expats who are only able to go back home on vacation ("in and out") but do not get any means to stay (the hand to hold onto). I got this idea especially from the music video that showcases all the touristy tropes of Greece, as if the country were just a postcard background, which might evoke this kind of bittersweet feeling of attachment and alienation on the diaspora. If that's not overthinking it, I don't know what is 😂

    The thing with Luxembourg in the past was that RTL had a different tactic compared to bigger nations in ESC - especially during the 60's-80's. At the time, France had a strict monopoly on radio and television, which meant that RTL - who at the time was broadcasting over middle-waves to the French public, could pick up promising stars and songwriters to participate for them in ESC. Through that, they manage to make themselves a household name while applying pressure on France and their monopoly. Monaco also had that approach, but abandoned ship in 1980

    The problem with Luxembourg was that RTL used to be a small station that broadcast across its own borders to Germany and France. That's why German and French stars were also sent (and win) to the ESC. With the privatization of TV stations in the 80s, RTL (now owned by Germans) became one of the largest broadcasters in Europe. However, the ESC is a program of the EBU, the public broadcaster in Europe. That is why only the small local station from Luxembourg is allowed to take part, because it is recognized by the state as a public one. It's like NBC taking part, but only the local New York studio.

    As excited as I am for them to come back... I wish the song wasn't such a nothing burger. It's not bad, but it won't stand out in a year where there are at least 3 other upbeat pop songs performed by women clad in all black (Malta, Georgia and Austria come to mind). I wish the concept and the song were more interesting and had more impact.
    For example, Norway is presenting a song strongly influenced by Norwegian music and culture. I wish Luxemburg did something similar, or at least went for a more 'powerhouse' direction, rather than doing a Sweden and getting a song that came straight out of a pop music factory.

    • @efi3825

      Yeah you're right, this would have really been an entry where it would make sense to feel the cultural heritage, whatever that means in the case of Luxembourg. Or maybe, this is just the "We're back, baby!"- entry. And I think they deliver in that sense. This song is great!
      But if anything, I would compare it to "La Noia" from Italy. Both are songs with some Latin elements about a young woman who wants to rearrange her life and struggles with an inner restlessness.

      Yeah, the more I read the more "it's a second Israel" it looks. The show was produced by an Israeli event company that produces the ESC in Tel Aviv in 2019.
      And Tali dedicated her win to her brother who is a soldier fighting currently in Israel against Gaza (sic!). She absolutely did not think that this may be inappropriate, as a contestant representing, you would think, Luxembourg.

      @@berlineczkaYes the fandom was behind a Palestinian representing...Iceland and thus capitalising on the war but Tali being of mixed heritage winning and dedicating her win to her brother is suddenly a scandal 😅 At least Tali has been living in Luxembourg for years!

    • @berlineczka
      @berlineczka 2 місяці тому +7

      @@Anna-hh6brThe fandom was actually quite conflicted on the issue of Bashar Murad in the Icelandic preselections. Also, the deadline for submitting the songs to Söngvakeppnin was in September, before the Hamas attack.
      Tali is Peruvian-Israeli who just happened to have lived in Luxembourg as a kid due to her father's work, and honestly I wouldn't care less if it was all there was to that. Even if I personally find it a bit disappointing that she had lived there for a decade and didn't bother to learn the language. She also moved to the USA after the pandemic, so it's not like she has been living there still.
      That being said, I wouldn't normally care. But it is an element of a bigger problem here. Israeli participation this year is already extremely controversial. Then the ties of the Luxembourg preselections to Israel are a bit too tight, for my taste. Her song was written by an Italian, but her choreographer and her dancers were Israeli, as was she (and the whole stage production team). And yes, dedicating her win to an Israeli soldier is disgusting, in my opinion. She just won to represent Luxembourg and dedicates her win (already with heavy Israeli influences) to an Israeli soldier. Where lies her loyalty? I am not Luxembourgish, but I can imagined that they could feel betrayed and outraged at that. Not to even mention the problematic nature of the current military activities of Israel, and the looming famine in Gaza due to Israeli blockade, done by the Israeli soldiers. What if her brother commits war crimes at the time when she dedicates her Luxembourgish win to him?

    • @Anna-hh6br
      @Anna-hh6br 2 місяці тому +8

      @berlineczka You people are funny. She didn't dedicate her win to an "IsRaeLi solDier" but to her brother, who happens to be a soldier. Not the same thing. The song was not written about her brother or thr IDF either as some like to claim, as it was written before the terrorist attack on Israel. And yes she might have personal ties with a hostage or a victim of the attack-if a European country was willing to give a platform to a singer from Palestine mentioning the war everywhere without even winning the thing, so does Tali have a right to show her support to whatever she wants. Just because you disagree with her it certainly doesn't make it disgusting. The looming famine is not because of Israel either, but because Hamas has been stealing aid to keep or sell to others. Many say how they have to buy aid they receive for free from the US or the Saudis.

    something about Krick, why she didn't won. She had the most public votes, but that were a lot of people who knew the song already. Unluckly the staging was bad and it wasn't here fault. Krick had a subtile song, like a James Bond song. The main staging was also like that, but the spectators were lit up, so it didn't feel like she was completly alone and ruined her stage performance ...
    With Daniel Marques (P3) he is famous in Luxembourg because he came until the half final of last season of the voice Germany! but his stage performance wasn't good at all, he was too static. I think he moved during the song around 2sq meters for an energetic song ...

      I see no issue with a Jewish israeli-Luxembourgian man fighting against Islamist radicalism terrorist group who attack his ancestral homeland (and likely where he has family living) murdering 1200 people and kidnapped hundreds, using people as human shields.. is what exactly?

      Those that chose to go into the IDF CHOOSE IT. It's something you can opt out of.
      And the war crimes keep mounting.
      The IDF kills everybody, but seems to have it in for journalists. The EBU got rid of Belarus after they got one blogger, not even an accredited journalist. He's still alive & free right now. But the IDF bodycount of journalists is in triple figures...
      Even if the EBU doesn't care about starving children, you would expect them to care about that.

      @@LeafHuntress It doesn't matter. I repeat: political opinions and stances aside it's still her brother. Had it been a palestinian girl dedicating her victory to her brother who's part of the "resistance" who kidnapped babies nobody would complain. She has a right to dedicate her victory to her loved ones and I'd have the same opinion had it been a russian girl dedicating her victory to her brother fighting for russia for example. I'm sorry, but nobody has the right to boycott the love someone feels for her/his own family.

      @MintyDragonfly 2 місяці тому +1

      @@JustYetAnotherUserI think a lot of people would’ve had an issue if a Palestinian girl dedicated her victory to a family member in the resistance actually, there are a lot of people who are absolutely behind Israel and you mentioning the resistance “kidnapping babies” would be one of the reasons they might be (Israeli soldiers are sniping toddlers and women fleeing their bombs so there isn’t a moral high ground to stand on with either side of the FIGHTERS there; there are atrocities being committed on both sides of the fight if the reports are to be believed, but this does not excuse the fact that the majority of the Palestinian nation is suffering a genocide at the hands of the Israeli government and military). It would be equally disturbing for a Russian person to dedicate their win to their family member in the Russian army and I think a LOT more people would take massive umbrage with that since they are the attacking force who chose to subject another nation to war without being attacked themselves, family member or not that’s bonkers to do publicly when there are major issues with what they are doing. What you’re saying is a poor argument against the reaction that people have had to Tali’s statement, family or not it was definitely a controversial thing to do and she knows that. People have the right to do whatever they want so if Tali wanted to express love for her brother in a controversial statement of support for the IDF then she has every right to do that, but other people have every right to respond in their own way to that and take it as an anti-Palestine statement, boycott the song because of it, etc. For example, I’m not judging anyone else for accepting Besa’s song from Albania but I personally have a problem with it since she has publicly liked a lot of very controversial anti-transgender tweets - that community and their rights are very important to me and so I personally cannot support her if she is transphobic. Not everyone knows that or associates the song with her views though so I understand that other people will not have the same response.

      @@MintyDragonfly My argument wasn't poor, I'm just not a snowflake to feel outraged by something as personal (and irrelevant to the public spectrum) as someone dedicating her victory to a loved one who she's afraid might die. How does that harm anyone? For me this isn't disturbing at all, be it from israelis, russians, palestinians whatever and it's only controversial for those who have been sleeping under a rock, for the israeli-palestinian conflict has been going on for almost 80 years. "Oh israel has been commiting crimes for decades", ok but people only started to care now? Where were all these snowflakes last year? Oh right, dancing to the unicorn girl. Where were they when israel won several times throughout the years? And during all that time palestine has been loudly accusing Israel of doing the same thing and nobody cared (except for a few consistent souls). They only started to care because it became a hot trend on social media and people love to pretend they're full of principles and that their opinion matters, let's be real. So why are people all of a sudden so upset to the point they can't even bear a young girl dedicating her victory to her brother? Are we seriously geting to a point people are gonna be judged negatively by something so personal? Not to mention that as you said "there isn't a moral high ground on either side" since this is a really complex issue with a lot of gray areas... right, only for people to overreact over this. Now imgine if she had openely said "Am Yisrael Chai" or something, at this rate she'd be lynched. Also, people can't complain that eurovision shouldnt be political only to make it political to this extreme themselves, that's a whole other level of hypocrisy right there. So for heaven's sake, people gotta get a grip...
