    Being greek, I have been in the proximity of persons whose lives and careers were ruined after the crisis of 2008. I won't deny the first verse "I am falling and rolling like dice" hit a nerve. This is not a gambler's throwing of a dice, we were the dice that were thrown around to fall as they may.
    I loved the analysis, btw.

    • @Mithras.Invictus
      @Mithras.Invictus 5 місяців тому

      The dice/gambling metaphor (both throwing and being the dice) really works on so many levels. On a personal relationship level it works as gambling on getting back together with an ex, but also being dependent on other circumstances for that to work. As a political metaphor it works as the Greek people being the dice thrown around by politicians in a game that is fundamentally rigged, as any gambling game is. The house (ECB/Troika) always wins. It also makes me think of the lottery ticket sellers and gambling shops. When you have nothing the smallest chance at everything is impossible to resist.
      Anyway love the analysis, and love Marina Satti's blend of modern and traditional music sang in her own language. It are the kind of submissions that I've always found the most interesting about Eurovision.

    I was 21 years old when I first moved from Norway to Greece in 2017. I knew little about the history, and less about the politics back then. Honestly, I was young and Norwegian - naive, if you will. With that said, my family have regurlarly travelled to Greece during my upbringing, so I still knew a little bit of what kind of culture I was getting into. And what I will say is: I never regret moving to Athens! I love the liveliness of the city and the people. I love the food and how they keep family, friends and neighbours close. I love how honest they are if you ask the Greeks absolutely anything - they don’t hold back. And I love how Marina is showing the rest of the world the Greece that I fell in love with. The perfect mixture of art, architecture and history, and the messiness of the aftermath of the economic crisis and skewed politics and the Greek people trying to work for a better life for themselves and their future. I will always love Greece for what it is when you see beyond the tourist photos, and I feel incredibly lucky and thankful to be able to experience both sides of the tourism «issue», being a western expat in Greece. ❤️

      @@DemosthenesKar because we all want to feel superior to non-Western immigrants. This is the sad truth and the reason why I insist on saying that I was an "Italian immigrant" when I lived in UK and Germany. And this was the way I was viewed, too. Even though I was studying at University on a scholarship, my German colleagues would ask me if I would stay in Germany and work in an Italian restaurant as a waitress. No joke. This Norwegian woman is as much of an immigrant to Greece as I was to Germany, but accepting that we are all equal on an individual basis is too humbling for some people.

    • @whitegardenia3813

      @@mimmiblu6138 Hellenes (Greeks) have been through a lot with wars, invasion, genocide, occupation, civil war, all caused by foreigners. And we have been betrayed by our 'friends and allies' several times. We have fought and lost many people to have our country, our language, our religion, our ethnos in general, so foreigners can come and enjoy themselves, live in our free country, and some come in illegally and collect their benefits. So it is insensitive for foreigners not to call themselves immigrants or 'expats' as if they are part of the indigenous population, but with a different title.

I have heard so many times other Greeks of diaspora to draw a picture of a dreamy greek experience with ancient monuments and good food. The food, the traffic, the tourists, the crazy car rides, the tavernas with old people and the old lady sitting outside. What is not true from all this? Who said anything about pride? Showing the everyday life in Athens is a choice Marina and her team made instead of showing again just monuments. Greece is history and monuments and beaches but it's also this. Fun, crazy, boring, beautiful and ugly reality. Also don't forget that this is actually what Marina and her team chose to show, so it has to do with their artistic aesthetic as well. What a great analysis!! I'm very disconnected of Eurovision this year, but Zari and Marina Satti is definitely one of my highlights already. I *LOVED* the video because it represented so well my own perception of the country when I visited. When I went I was expecting something like Rome, and what I found was a sheer contrast between the carefully curated (albeit still chaotic, like we see on the video) tourist streets and more run down and depressed streets. It was a continuous contrast that really enriched my whole experience. As a greek who was raised in Athens and who currently lives for the first time abroad (in Germany), I feel astounded by things that are not so engraved in our culture the same way they are in central Europe, such as bike mentality or even the way recycling is done. When I get asked about my home country and why I like it being here since 'I speak the Language of Plato and was raised where he once stood and that should be enough', I sometimes reveal some of the not so perfect aspects of Greece that totally represent modern times. Its funny how people believe that our motherland is just a living museum, a dead country that lives through its past and just exists to share its best ancient qualities with the rest of the world while being completely inactive. Showing our imperfections and everyday lives is to me like showing our truth, we are far from perfect and also we are so much more than our great ancestors. We are blessed with the sun and sceneries with rare beauty, but they dont belong to us. I feel odd feeling proud solely due to the fact that I was born greek. We, my generation and the next to come, admire and love our cultural heritage, but we also live for today and try to wear our national flag with pride for todays achievements while we continue writing history. Marina really shocked the world with how true she is and thats why, in my opinion, that is the best type of marketing and advertisement she could have done. Thank you for all the journey, Marina. I'm a born and raised Greek that used to be obsessed with leaving Greece and in certain instances I was ashamed of stating ny nationality while living abroad. I returned to Greece 2012 and I have shifted my mindset so much as regardless of the economic situation and the corrupted government, I find the life quality here much much better than let's say some of the Western European countries that I lived in and are undeniably way more developed and financially stable. That being said, I have loved Marina from Koupes onward and I love what she does with her videos. Some Greeks that have my old mindset (of shame) find this an offensive depiction of Greece but what I see in her videos is the pride and confidence to say "THIS is who we really are, take it or leave it". And I love her for it. We have to stop pretending that we are "Europeans" because of geography. Our culture is SO old and colorful and mixed...in a way, I feel that some Greeks try to export an image of the all white statues and marbles forgetting that they only look this way because their vibrant colors have been washed away by the years and the weather trials. This is us. We have been here for yeard, we have been through one shit storm after the other but we're still colorful and vibrant and to my fellow Greeks who don't want to admit it let me say one thing. Be proud of who you are, not of who you want to be. GO Marina, win or no win, I'm 💯 in! Maybe the first time I'm interested in Eurovision....

      And no, this isn't us trying to look "European" (whatever that means). Greece has a lot things to be proud of with its rich history and culture, the degradation of the last decades is nothing to be proud of though. We should try to improve our nation, not revel in its pathetic current state.

    If I was a stage creative director for Greece this year: When the song goes to that part where Marina stops the video saying “Opa opa opa” almost like something interrupting her dance routine, in that part the tourist does a cameo on stage LIVE interrupting the performance just by crossing it. Almost as if he is lost and accidentally ended up on stage. It could also be a reference to a few cases when other Eurovision contenders had a similar experience, a stranger interrupting their performance live on stage. We first saw that In 2010 when Jimmy Jump interfered the Spanish Eurovision act as he went on stage during Daniel Diges’ performance. Also Vitaly Sedyuk aka Eurovision’s Naked Butt Guy stage bombed Jamala at the Eurovision Grand Final 2017 during her interval performance. Lastly, during SuRie’s performance for the UK in 2018 in Lisbon, where a stage invader Dr ACactivism grabbed her microphone to scream “Nazis of the UK media, we demand freedom” before he was wrestled from the stage.
    I think it would be a clever idea to include the German tourist but also make a statement and create a viral sensation. It will help the song with the Televoting for sure.

    Not only did she show how we really are but, crucially, how we sell ourselves to the outside, because we’ve convinced ourselves tourism is all we have, and that we need to be more like Western Europeans or US-ians. We even get embarrassed to use Greek in international spaces because we think we “should” be speaking English. She did a brilliant not just showing what (part) of what the country is really about, but also satirizing how (we let) tourists see us. Μπραβο της! Ένα πόντο και να μην πάρει έχει κάνει εξαιρετική δουλειά.

    @jimkats1 7 місяців тому +18

    As a Greek, I can assure you aswell that the blue shirt tourist guy is indeed what we usually see here in Greece from many Germans, in other words, a stereotypical German tourist in Greece xd.
    I have taken a photo with that Mickey Mouse, it actually came up and pretty much forced me to take a picture which then I had to pay for xd.
    Mantissa was the song that made Marina Satti known to most of Greece. It became viral pretty quick.
    The song, or specifically, the video, indeed triggered a lot of fuss in Greece, which we haven't seen for many years. It's the first time since 2005 that our Eurovision participation is being discussed by the media soooo much.
    And people forget that Zari may not be likable by many Greeks, but it's what the rest of the world will decide to vote or no. And Zari depicts indeed what Greece is actually, for those who haven't come to Greece. There are tourist traps indeed, but there are also places with important history aswell but are neglected due to not being profitable enough for the archaeology service/state...
    Thank you for this video. Great job.

    • @jimkats1
      @jimkats1 7 місяців тому +2

      Oh, and what the modern Greece is, the image that the video depicts, is in my opinion what some other countries have aswell, not so unique. It's subjective though, but it's the combination of climate, the people you meet, that makes your time in Greece, or any other country, great or no. So, even if the tourism is the main industry of Greece, the popular things like ancient monuments and beaches and stuff, isn't necessarily the only things that a tourist should look for. And I know for sure many tourists who come to Greece for a, what could be called, alternative tourism.

    I’m speechless with your analysis. You gave us ,an absolutely perfect one. When the song came out , I saw many reactions from people and I truly couldn’t understand why some of them were against it and they couldn’t react by using their brains first than their tongues…
    Greece had almost 2 terrible decades with the crisis , we lost many of us especially from committing suicides , also some of our dignity mostly, from what our friends from North Europe said about us (in general) and they didn’t specify their opinion (about our corrupted politics and their policies)..( they said that the majority of us are lazy , that we don’t pay our taxes etc)..
    As I said we lost some from our dignity yes , but we never let them make us believe that they know us better than us.
    Greece is what Marina gives you in our song , is our people in our streets is our Mediterranean happiness and hospitality, is our sadness for our stolen Marbles of Parthenon and many other things in our everyday life .
    But our culture and our dna always forgives but never forgets.
    For that reason Marina gave some donuts to our ( German friend) and at the end “ it doesn’t even matter” we tried so hard … and here we are again. Good vibes only❤Love from Greece 🙏

    I loved it! What a superb analysis! So insightful! What can I say? Kudos! This is the good thing about Eurovision, which I very much enjoy. It can create a much larger audience for artists who have a lot to say and offer the world, like Marina Satti. This year, Greece is offering a controversial but very true to our own identity song and a complementing video. So many times we've experienced things on our journeys that had nothing to do with the idyllic images promoted by tourist authorities. But if we take a closer look at the real place and roll the dice with optimism, then, we end up with good memories. That said, Marina rolled the dice and, staying true to herself, she produced some amazing work. We look forward to the competition and hope that she wins, because this kind of work is really so unusual. It's the very definition of "out of the box". Marina is suffering the loss of her father and this is real turning point for her, but we send her our positive thinking and wish the best for her!

They are both married with Greek husbands. They love Greece,the truly enjoy the country, they rarely visit their homelands. They see Greece in a completely different perspective, maybe that's what we need after all.❤ I would also like to mention that downtown Athens is not the entire city. Every city in the world has some seedy neighborhoods and Athens is no exception, yet Southern and Northern Athens where middle class, upper class and rich folks live, is completely and entirely different.😅 Not to mention the fact that Athens is not the entire country and rural Greece is actually quite beautiful and humane.

I totally can see why other people have gravitated towards it and I really hope this does super well for Greece and promotes future entries with a similar meaningful context, I just wish I liked the sound of the song more than I do. No wonder the lifo magazine is mentioned. They are masters of the subcultures, like the vice conglomerate.
    When we analyze enough subcultures, we'll might begin discussing about cultures. That run deep.

      Yeah when I saw the donuts in multiple videos it was like the moment at the end of The Usual Suspects where it all comes together. -MB

      A large part of the microplastics polluting our waters is from cars tires. Doing that deliberately seems insane to me.

    From an Eurovision song to its artist Marina Satti, then from ancient Greece to Heidegger, technical reproduction and mutual gaze, I must say that I really enjoyed this video, especially knowing most of the references (because of my profession). I love Eurovision, but I didn't think it could be analysed this way! So cheers to you and good luck to Marina 🍀🎉

    How just how! How did you find all this information about Greek music, culture etc. I am Greek, I know most* of the info mentioned but I had never made those connections!! You are amazing! (*I knew nothing about her for sure)... Thank you so so so so so much for this, from someone from the lost Greek generation!!!!
    PS I did not work on this song and yes, I did not like it, it's not my cup of tea, and thought it was kitsch and full of clichés. It is growing on me for sure though.

    It's unbelievable how stupid you make some 'experts' look with your deep dives.
    Your videos are awesome and should be mandatory viewing for commentary channels.

    What an amazing video, there were small elements you mentioned, like about how the song isn't necessarily just about a partner which I thought myself but hadn't seen anywhere else. Just a really enlightening video essay from start to finish about the past, present and future of Greek culture and about well just how smart and talented Marina Satti really is. I hope many many people can see this video!! And yes they should definitely bring the tourist onto the stage, that was a fascinating explanation of the 'mutual gaze', something which can be seen with tourists and locals all around the world.

    I was stunned from your analysis. You did some serious work here sir and I would like to thank you for making it much deeper than it seems at first glance. That was awesome. The allegory is expressed as it should. Kudos to you for that brilliant work!!! ❤
