Hi Chris, Just a small tip, make sure that the pilot light is turned off on the stove if it is gas stove. My dad had a friend who sprayed lacquer cabinets and the pilot light was on and the whole kitchen blew!
I was a co-owner cabinet maker at green & green cabinet in Richmond Virginia with my father and older brother the business was around from 1985-2006. been making cabinets since 2003 I miss it I love painting cabinets my favorite cabinet is oakwood with maple stain and fruitwood stain my father did cabinets at age 16 he died in 2012 age 70
I still use the latex products because it is less brittle, also people in Seattle see a painter and they are sick from the fumes even before we open the can. I used to use lacquer primer surfacer on all millwork and top coated with Kelly Moore Durapoxy. The Durapoxy had super impact resistance.
yeah, solvent won't fly everywhere. I was cringing thinking about some of the places we work. We shut down ventilation systems before we go in. We were on a job in DC where the painters were using a oil based stain the the sub basement. The ventilation system carried the fumes through all 10 floors of the building. They evacuated. It was ugly.
Really helpful guys. This is a good format to reveal important thing that pop into your minds off-script. Thanks! P. S. You can PROVE that there is no explosion risk by finding out what the Lower Explosive Limit of your solvent is (the lowest ratio with air that can explode) and then comparing the volume of the room with the amount of solvent in the cup. Worst case in your scenario, with his 25% thinning and 8 oz. product: if you threw the whole 2 oz of laquer thinner into the air in that space, it probably wouldn't reach the limit. Of course, I don't know the room size or the thinner's LEL, but it also doesn't include the fact that the fans are increasing the air volume wildly, that the inbound fan's sparking motor is in clean air, and that the outbound fan can only light thinner on the way out. So don't point it at the kid's sandbox and your golden. (It's just mentioned because it's a gas to do the actual calculation sometime for professional fun {pun intended}). Great show! You guys ever try accraguard instead of laquer? The guy at Sherwin Williams told me it's more durable and easier to work with because it's water based. I've never tried it, just interested if you guys have.
For the past 2 years I have been doing 3 to 4 kitchen cabinet jobs/month. With inside hinges I never take off the doors anymore. I just mask off the whole kitchen and spray it all in place. The time saving is incredible and I have never had a complaint about the hinges chipping or peeling. More profit for me while at the same time I can charge my customers less. Can complete the job in fewer days also. And I only use airless as well (although I don't use lacquer) since the application is 4x faster at least. Never get complaints about the finish either.

Hey guys about start respraying my cabinets this weekend with a HVLP air compressor setup and pigmented lacquer what are the mixture ratios of primer/paint?
This was great, I just painted a vanity with your masking technique came out great. I actually put rolls of tape on a tape gun for packing moving boxes very easy and quick
I'm redoing my son's cabinets. I spent hours sanding, priming, resanding, and taping off. Finally it was time to shoot the boxes. What a disappointment! There are so many runs and sags, so now I have a lot more sanding to do. I'm so discouraged. It's my first time spraying. Any tips for avoiding this in the future?
I wonder what John would think using some of the recently available water based alkyd enamels for doing cabinets. Sherwin and Benjamin Moore sell these special paints. I'm not sure when these became available. Back when I was doing high-gloss stuff I used Imron and automotive paint. In recent years, I've been using water based poly for covering solid wood (from General Finishes . varathane product is good too). Those are amazing and you can achieve beautiful high-gloss or satin finishes by brushing or using paint pads -- you would need to paint flat - one side at a time though. as usual it all boils down to prep.
Hi Chris. What is the brand name of the pre cut lacquer you use and where do you buy it? Also the same of the primer. What is the brand name and where do you buy it.
Hi, I've seen a method that starts by coating a layer of paper maybe(I don't know exactly the name and details) and then going to lacquer. Is it a better way to have a better smooth and polished ending? And do you know what is the name of that material in industrial cabinet painting?
Great video , i just wanted to ask , do lacquer paint create overspray dust? , I have done couple of job with it on a hvlp and I notice it leave lots of very thin dust , thanks
Sometimes you sand. Sometimes you don’t. Depends on the quality of the cabinets. Depends what kind of wood. If you sand too much with cherry wood, it will bleed through. Do not use TSP. It leaves a residue. Use denatured alcohol. 2 coats of primer. 3 coats of paint,3-4Buff inbetween coats. First use a 240 sanding pad to get rid of the little bumps , then use a 500 grit sand pad to make it slick and smooth. I use general finishes paints. I have never tried anything else, although I’m about to venture out and try new paints.
Do you have a video on thinning percentages for hvlp. Basically what is your mix ratio? I am used to airless and have hvlp but don't know which hvlp tip sizes are best or ratio of paint to laquer.
I'm looking to lacquer my cabinets but found they have a polyurethane top coat on them. What do you guys suggest I do to prep them? What products would you use to prime/paint?
Thank you for sharing this video. I spray lacquer on pianos, but was thinking I would need to spray an oil base or latex on my new cabinet doors. I am now fully confident to spray lacquer on my cabinet doors. By the way, I use a box fan at my piano shop also.
Hey Chris! Thank you for this info! You’ve inspired me that I could pull this off. :) I’m gonna tackle my kitchen and give this a try. I talked to the paint store though and they weren’t sure what products I was talking about with tinted lacquer from just what you mentioned in this video. Could you tell me specifically what products (or product numbers even!) you use for the primer surfacer and the tinted lacquer? Thanks! -Sasha
How do you feel about 2 coats of sherwin williams extreme bond primer (latex) followed up with 2 coats of sherwin williams emerald urethane trim enamel? Existing cabinets look original (house built in 1940), I'm having a hard time telling if they are finished with lacquer or polyurethane. Any help would be much appreciated! Just subscribed to your page, you guys are an amazing resource!
Great tips. I prefer using a high quality self leveling latex paint. And I can give an extremely smooth finish using a couple brands of roller covers that I have discovered over time. I do pull the doors and drawer fronts for environment controlled spray booth.
How quickly does the lacquer smell dissipate from the customers house if ventilated while spraying.? Customer has small children and is reluctant to allow us to use lacquer on her built in unit.
how would you say the finish ends up being on this, if you get really close and shine a light on it can you see a small amount of eggshell, or is that why your thinning 25% seems thin for a 1.3 tip

Nice video. Similar to automotive paint process. I use TSP to remove greasy residue and give the surface a 'tooth'. That cup gun system is cool. I'm guessing a bit pricy for DIY folks. A reduction gun HVLP sprayer is a nice (cheap) alternative to a full HVLP rig since you can use your existing compressor but you do have to keep the cup mostly upright. I think you can get these for about $90.
Great video. I like watching them. I have a question. What do you do for tiny cubby holes? I ALWAYS get blowback and more paint on my face than in the 6 x 6 cubby hole. Also in tight areas like between the hood and surrounding cabinets? Thanks
I'm dealing with that right now. My super-do-it-yourselfer-probably-stupid guess would be yes. They (Paint Life TV) recommended this (www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00LEFWGWA/ref=ox_sc_act_title_5?smid=A22PHV6UV6XP0Y&psc=1) in one of their previous videos. I can stand the look of early 2000s orange looking oak cabinets and we have them everywhere in our home.
You talk about 2 prime coats followed by 2 clear coats. So where is your actual color? Is your primer colored or is your clear tinted to your desired color? I would have suspected a color coat over your primer & under your 2 top coats (clear)?
I'm painting my cabinets and they were painted by a brush before so there were bad brush marks on the doors so I cleaned then sanded down the doors. And the sanding exposed some bare wood spots and when I primed them there's staining coming up through the primer from the bare wood areas. I'm now on three coats of primer one coat of polyurethane and one more coat of primer and still there's staining coming through were the wood was sanded bare. What do I have to do to stop that staining from coming through? Thanks
why not include link to lacquer paint or some description to it would be helpful like is it shervin william and if it is what is the name of it so we can ask for the same? Thanks
I always prime cabinets with white shellac. Your comment on this? Also you are exhausting paint out the door. Doesn't this get on stuff like sidewalks, cars or outdoor furniture?
You can't use hvlp for walls and trim the hvlp your using is a turbine which gets hot after 20 mins of use and u need to shut it off till it cools, also you would go through alot of needles (spry tip) latex paints are very course and you would ruin tips quickly, hvlp made for small fine finish work, nice work chris,Henry in ct
I have an hvlp sprayer (3 stage) and it's just ok. I don't like to thin paint to get it to spray properly. Most of my jobs I use normal latex house paint. Sometimes I feel maybe it's not the ideal tool for me

ElectricPulse100 hvlp turbines can give you an automotive finish if you know how to use it and the temperature is right, and yes you can use a compressor to spray but you will need at least a 60 gallon compressor if you want to do it fast, plus compressors are too heavy and bulky compared to the titan capspray
This is a great video by pros for pros, learning about using lacquers. For the everyday homeowner looking to paint 1 set of their own cabinets and trying to learn how to, this is a decent video for ideas. But do not use lacquers, it is a while different league then regular paints. Everyday homeowner (and many other painters not looking to use lacquers), would be fine using a primer like a couple coats of Zinsser Smart Prime for waterbased, or original BIN (smelly). For paints Sherwin Emerald Urethane, Ben Moore Waterbased Satin Impervo. If you have Kelly Moore or Dunn Edwards in your area they have good cab paints.
I own my own business and have no idea how to do this stuff. It’s old news in Seattle. Only time I’d ever even been on a job with the solvent stuff is painting a brand new bar.
I know what you about using an airless sprayer but what about using the newest Graco handheld battery sprayer? Too bad Titan doesn’t have a handheld corded or battery spray gun!!!
The Dude Even the Sherwin-Williams and PPG staff have given the graco battery gun poor reviews.. you can spray lacquer with a small pump like a nova and a fine finish tip. Before the green tips came out paint contractors were shooting lacquer products with the black tips with no problem.

I like cleaning my cabinets with Simple Green before priming and painting or laquering. Simple green smells good to:)
I like the HLVP but I also use a 390 and a 208 tip good video!
I like the 440 with a 310 tip
Thoughts on using krud kutter deglosser to clean vs dawn?
I’m working with some 1995 golden oak cabinets with a little shine on them :)
We like dawn better
Do you get orange peel with the hvlp? Also, could I use an hvlp with a regular compressor instead of that titan?
Thanks for sharing Shamus!
shamus jubenal what would the process be of painting over laquers
I own my own business and have no idea how to do this stuff. It’s old news in Seattle. Only time I’d ever even been on a job with the solvent stuff is painting a brand new bar.
Swaglodyte Dad but you can get easy sand still is Seattle! That’s stuff is gold in a can.
Airgun tip size gun? 1.8?
What HVLP system are you using
Titan capspray 115
another great video thanks
I know what you about using an airless sprayer but what about using the newest Graco handheld battery sprayer? Too bad Titan doesn’t have a handheld corded or battery spray gun!!!
The Dude great sprayer but hvlp give a finer finish
The Dude
Even the Sherwin-Williams and PPG staff have given the graco battery gun poor reviews.. you can spray lacquer with a small pump like a nova and a fine finish tip. Before the green tips came out paint contractors were shooting lacquer products with the black tips with no problem.
How much that job can be charged??
What did you use to hang the cabinets ?
We have many videos on our cabinet process and we use Paintline hanging system we sell them on our website store.theidahopainter.com
Hey guys, great information. Do you use a clear coat over the pigmented lacquer? I am being told at Sherman Williams that it is necessary.
can you refinish mdf cabinets?
Yes, you can
