I used to see a lot of Irish dancing in St. Louis, also Polish, German, and Flamenco mostly on TV. but some in public. Loved them all .... but the Irish always made me tear up... such beautiful music. Fantastic!!!!!! I can just see Irish/Flemenco music/dance merging together into another spectacular dance form.

I've watched you sense I was very young & loved everything about you from that one special moment. I'm so very PROUD OF YOU & who you became. You have always been on my BUCKET LIST to meet or at least see perform. It's a very hard thing to realize that it's never going to happen.. That's a VERY HARD THING FOR ME TO REALIZE. Just please know that I have loved you & everything you've done from your beginning.. You've always been in my prayers. You're #1 fan. . Just me....

Such a brilliant dancer, he's also a lovely person. He was interviewed on tv one time, n l thought he'd be a brash, cocky person, a bit of a show off. I couldn't have been more wrong. He was such a lovely person, very humble n sincere. He took any praise graciously. I was full of admiration for him.... A true gentleman.

It's so easy to perform for the camera & to say all the right words & expressions, personally I think he's up himself so far he can't crawl back down. In other words he's an arsehole but I do concede that he can surely dance!!

Except for the fact if I know nothing about The irish-american Descendants who have maintain unbroken tradition with the native Irish dance, which was called clogging originally in Ireland and done in wooden soles shoes or leather soled shoes with wooden taps. Today that use metal tabs. Irish folk dancing has taken several branches in the Southern United States. One being the original style of Irish clogging Irish descendants have kept alive. And in spite of what they say today with the stiff-armed posture, the common Folk the average Irishman did not dance with their arms stiff. And true to the way they dance in Ireland, if they didn't have a building structure with a wooden floor, and they danced on a Barrel lid or on a small wooden board. This is still practice to this day both in Ireland and in the United States.
Flat-footing and square dance clogging or Mountain clogging or Appalachian clogging are additional forms of American irish folk dancing that developed out of the original old style Irish clogging. The whole Bluegrass genre of music in America owes its existence and origination from the Irish people who came here.
Michael Flatley is an absolutely amazing artist who has transformed Irish clogging and Irish step dance into something amazing. He deserves all the credit he gets. I wouldn't want anyone to think this narrator or who was scriptwriter for this program knows diddly-squat about Irish people who have emigrated elsewhere on the globe. While there creative forms of square dance clothing with the metal Taps which was very popular from the 50s to the 70s and featured on many variety shows on National Television dance troupes performed at the Grand old Opry and other prominent places. So Michael Flatley is not really the first person to bring Irish folk dancing national heights outside of Ireland.
But without a doubt Michael Flatley an american-born Irishman took Irish dancing to all new heights.

@@zyxw2024 Well as a Scot I have more in common with the Irish than the English ! I love Scotland, it's an amazing country but I couldn't live there, mainly because of the Nat health service ! I saw what it did to my mum over the years. In France the health thing is much easier and as I get older it's reasuring. I have never been to Ireland, I follow a couple of Irish blogs, mainly about neglected architecture, such a pity that the country doesn't look after it's cultural heritage. I LOVE Graham Northam and his humour. Although I am not French I tend to come back here all the time. I studied in London and moved to France at 21 to work in fashion and was supposed to change countries every two years to learn as many languages as possible but I met someone ( classic tale ) He was a policeman and when Younger my two boyfriends ended up in jail so a policeman was 'safe'. We stayed together for 19 years and are still friends today. My second french bf was a sociopath and I got out after five years still alive but ruined. I decided to play the field but met someone nice and it was with him that I moved to Brazil. He dumpted me after a few months for a whore, cancelling my plans for a visa and adoption and I was stuck in Sao Paulo, working for some criminals making clothes and designing a nightclub for four mafiosos ! I fled to China because someone paid my ticket but the Financial crisis hit and I ended up back in France with ten euros having lost everything. I didn't give in but worked and got back up on the ladder but gave up dating since 2006, no more trust. I am semi retired, living in the French countryside seeing no one, walking the dogs, reading books etc ,,, not exciting but had enough of that ! @@zyxw2024 Rain in Ireland! You surprise me ! hihihi ! Well it IS a green country, the downside is the rain. I remember when Young a period of three months when it rained EVERY day in Scotland !! Well your 1400 folks makes my village sound even smaller, there are no shops and I Don't drive. My second last job was working for a Lebanese designer and we would follow the Saudi Royals all over doing fittings for clothes. I got to stay in Beirut that I loved, less so Saudi Arabia ! so not my thing. My kid sister was killed when living in Oman so they are not in my favour. All my life I have stayed clear of money, never wanted to date someone rich and the few times I did I refused gifts. I only really value money earned and even then I've given most of it away. Today I struggle but on the upside I am free, potent and still creative. I would love to zip off to Amsterdam ( one of my favorite places ) or NY ( been a few times ) and above all back to India, a country I love. My mum is failing fast so my energy is for her now. My kid brother died 18 months ago and she took it hard, that's two children she has buried. As for languages, when you work in fashion you have to learn a few. I have French of course but also Portuguese and Italian and at one point I learnt deaf sign language! Don't ask why! Take care xo

Michael Flatly was the prime driver in the creation of Riverdance. His collaboration with Bill Whelan the composer were critical to the shows success. John McColgan and Moya Doherty as director and producer developed a show that was as spectacular and novel as any in the previous four decades. The split occurred as a result of who owned what. The prod and director wanted full creative control, they wanted complete financial control ( even putting Flatley on a salary) and complete control of the future direction of the show including selection of performers, etc. Flately refused and in 1999 a settlement was reached . Michael Flatly is believed to have been given 2% of the earnings of Riverdance which still travels the world. According to Forbes some years ago was earning him 54 million dollars a year . Add that to his earnings from " lord of the dance " and you can understand why he did what he did, he backed himself , well done Michael.

@@noelconway2589 Robert Downey Jr was the prime driver for marvel studios, did it make it his movies? No!.. Riverdance was never Flatleys show, he might of had a hand on making it spectacular but that dint mean he owed it, changes were going to be made, he dint like so he got replaced, if someone pays me to design and build a building I don't get to decide what the owners do with it after it's built.. also this UA-cam video doesn't mention that Flatley flirted with the dancers and even Butler, there's a reason why jean and him had a relationship

I lost respect for Flatley and Lord of the Dance, when the show was changed and the women started dancing in what appears to be underwear. As a Christian woman who tries to minister to young ladies and remind them that the Bible says to dress modestly, this is unacceptable. Ireland is a Catholic country, and I doubt that many of them approve of the sultry and sleazy nature that this show has adopted. The high waisted shorts and sports bras in the 1996 version, made me uncomfortable enough but then more "modern" versions, have them stripping down to Victoria's Secret level bra and panties. ( Time stamp 4:08)😮 Not only would I be embarrassed to pay money to see that, I wouldn't want young kids watching it, or my daughter to dance scantily clad in front of the whole world. Brilliant dancer and choreographer ? Yes when he helped create Riverdance but he seems to have gotten away from making his shows about Ireland and it's rich musical and dance heritage and turned them into hour long ads for Planet Fitness or an X-rated exhibition. So sad.

"Lord Of The Dance" should become a film based on Michael Flatley's life from humble beginnings being born to Irish parents growing up in Chicago to the glittering and successful life long career and the smash hit show of the 1990s and the part he played in bringing show to life starring Poldark's Aiden Turner as Michael Flatley, Mamma Mia actress Amanda Seyfried as Jean Butler, Pop Singer Shakira as Bernadette Flynn, Harry Potter and Star Wars actor Domnhall Gleeson as Daire Nolan, Game Of Thrones actress Masie Williams as Helen Egan, Cinderella Actress Lilly James as Anne Buckley and Love Island's Maura Higgins as Gillian Norris in a cast of thousands with Directors Steven Spielberg and Robert Zemnickis at the helm and Composers Ronan Hardiman and John Williams creating the musical score for the film to supersede "Bohemian Rhapsody" and "Rocketman" on the screen for the thrillseeking cinematic audiences across the globe and let the world be part of the journey that made the showstopping phenomenon of the 1996-1997 a reality.

I'm sorry but I need to correct one thing. Irish dancing IS very well-known in the southeastern United States where many Irish immigrants settled, especially around the Appalachian areas.
Where they still to this day practice both, their original style of Irish clogging ( it was originally called clogging because the type of shoe with wooden soles or with leather soles with wooden taps) - including many of the same steps done in traditional Irish barrel dancing, but done on a small flat board - as well as unique styles of the original Irish clogging better original to the Irish settlers in the United States.
We irish-american descendants have never stopped dancing our Irish dances.
Today's descendants of the Irish immigrants consider themselves irish-americans even though we're natural-born citizens by this point for several Generations.
My grandfather was a second generation Irishman born American soil, Protestant, like his father before him. His grandfather straight from Ireland. My grandfather played the fiddle and the guitar in a typical Appalachian bluegrass
of musicians. He was he was second to the youngest of 12 children ... all redheaded. Like Michael Flatley, my grandfather was not a very tall man and a fairly slim build.
Many of the American bluegrass songs have the same exact fiddle work and sound as the Irish music. Some of it has changed and developed a little bit into unique sound. The fact the Scottish and Irish settlers in the Appalachian area invented invented several unique instruments to play some of us music such as the dulcimer and the hammer dulcimer. Although do not believe what some uninitiated goon wrote on Wikipedia. No one in the southeast of Appalachia eversole eversole any instrument from Persia that Wikipedia is trying to claim what's a dulcimer. Dulcimer is not even an a Persian or Iranian word. The American Appalachian or Mountain Dulcimer was invented in America as was the banjo. The banjo the Unique Style to Appalachian music that created a whole new sound. But that did not stop irish people in the south from dancing.

I agree with you. Michael WAS a brilliant dancer and choreographer but after he left Riverdance, his shows gradually became sexually explicit and unwatchable. The 1996 version of Lord of the Dance in Dublin, was great, until the dance segment known as "Breakout" was shown. That is when the female dancers' Rip off their dresses in some weird attempt to prove to Morrigan the temptress, that they can be sexy too. Funny how the character of Morrigan kept her clothes on., I was uncomfortable with the high waisted shorts and sports bras but as time went on, it has degraded to Victoria's Secret level bra and panties. (See time stamp 4:05 in this video). I am a Christian and was trained in ballet. I love music and dance as much as the next person, but having females dress and dance seductively, is unacceptable. Ireland is a Catholic country and I can bet any amount of money that not all of them applauded when Irish dance took this sleazy and trashy turn. TRUE art, does not require it's participants to compromise their standards and principles. I would not pay money to see these shows, I would not take young children to see them, nor would I want my daughter onstage performing like a stripper. Michael started out as a brilliant dancer and choreographer but his ego corrupted him and anyone that he worked with. Still love Riverdance because it is still classy, tasteful and stays focused on the beauty of music and dance. These other shows, are now garbage.

The man at the beginning is the father of the very accomplished dancer, Joe Bitter, and his comments are about Joe, not Michael Flatley. He was interviewed for the documentary "Jig". You don't identify him here but you should. Or deleting these comments completely would be more professional.

Fuck he's not even Irish! 🇮🇪 hey, I'm Irish, and I must give this guy Kudos! We Irish a tough bunch! 🇮🇪 I participated in Irish Dancing for many years. I hate this new bred of dancer! It's not the spray tan or shoes that count but the bruises on your ass when you kick back and that high and that hard! 🇮🇪

He stole his idea from Stavros Flatley. Stav got his idea from Greek dancing. This Michael turnip is a fraud.
