Halo lore is one of those golden nuggets of sci fi fiction that everybody has a basic understanding of, but not many know just how amazing and extensive it is.
@Mox Infernum think you're getting the definition of fiction and non fiction mixed up. Fiction = fake Non fiction = real. Unless you believe the covenant are real and waiting until humanity reaches tier 2 tech level so that they can have their crusade.
The Flood are truly terrifying because of how they can take away an enemies greatest champions. And then use all of their talents against their former allies. Worst every single individual they consume/infect all of their knowledge is forever stored within the Gravemind. Making it possibly the most intelligent and wisest creatures in Halo.
@@Dr.Pootis and that the only way to truly defeat the flood is to wipe out all existence of them down to the last molecule. If even one spore survives, the flood retains all its knowledge.
@@Dr.Pootis This has so many existential implications, it means that eventually /all/ of creation will be the Floods domain. This isn't your regular enemy, like a singular foe working as a cog in a greater machine. This is a force of nature, the Flood is the inevitability of death given sentience. The consequences of mortality are such that it can never be stopped, and it very well knows this. The gravemind references this fact, "defeat is only the addition of time to a sentence i never deserved. I ebb and flow like water, through rock and metal and time." (roughly paraphrased) The Flood is a ceaseless tidal wave of flesh, with a singular timeless goal of absolute conquest.
When I played Halo as a kid, the first few missions I was like "oh cool, fighting with Aliens with fancy weapons in space". Then the flood level I shat myself 😂
Guilty spark 343. The creeps really set in when most of the grunts would run past me instead of away from me and most of the level just went silent. No gun fights. Nothing. Elite jump scares did nothing to me, but the silence definitely gave me the shitz
”One single flood spore can destroy an entire species.” It's an understatement, if you don't kill the first spore, you might as well say goodbye to an entire galaxy
technically speaking, the flood is not a threat to the galaxy, or even life in the galaxy, just biodiversity. in a way, it's still upholding the Mantle, it just doesn't allow any free will.
Wrong, they have goals that the precursors did. They are testing humanity to get the Mantal of Responsibility from the precursors. It was made clear in Primordial. They will test humanity but the outcome 'has not been decided yet'. Which is turn means depending on how humanity respects life and biodiversity, they might retreat on their own and allow freewill. As the Primordial said 'It has not been decided'.
@@elipsorange Your partially correct, but missing the main point: The Flood are NOT the Precursors. While the Precursors may indeed be testing humanity still, and the flood may be part of that, the Flood themselves are not acting in accordance with any such test. Take the Flood attack on the remains of New Mombasa, what possible result could come from such an action, if the Elites had not glassed the infection site? Just one: humanity falls. Earth was the last real bastion of Humanity, if the Flood had been allowed to spread, even a little, earth, and humanity, would have been utterly consumed, and would never be able to pass such a test, because they effectively wouldn't exist anymore.
@@FBI-ju5no Precursors shape space and time, no matter the state or outcome of any such thing, no matter the sentience will always be the will of the Primordial and the Precursors. It's all the same, they shape and test life no matter the scenario. They made all that clear in Primordium.
@@elipsorange And you once again miss the point: the Precursors allowed the corruption of the "dust" for revenge against the forerunners, saw it as a way to prevent any of their creations from ever turning against them again. Additionally, the entire saga Primordium is a part of originally assumed that humanity had already passed the test, by altering 1/3 of their population with something that would make the flood attack itself after they were infected. However this was later proven false, the Flood purposefully retreated to make the forerunners waste time and resources on a non existent cure, instead of properly rallying against the Flood. And once again, if the Flood had been successful in their invasion of earth, there would have been no humanity to test.
No one giving credit to how utterly resilient ancient humanity was? They were fighting a two front war with a superior neighbor and an extremely dangerous biological threat at the same time. The fact that ancient humanity lasted around a millenia in a two front war and at the same time horribly damaged the forerunners says something.
@@bensadfleck9972 that is pretty much how humans really are . We are resilient even against all odds we never give up . We will fight a guerrilla war until they leave or kill us all
They were technologically and even somewhat physically similar to the forerunner living 100+ years they only lost because they were spread between fighting the flood and the forerunners, if not for that they would have most like killed the forerunners as wel
With their backs against the Wall, Ancient Humanity dug deep and found the courage to fight harder than ever. It's said the only reason that Humanity lost their war with the forerunners is because they tried to focus on the greater threat of the Flood. Such resilience is why the Forerunners chose Humanity to be their successors. Even as Human worlds were lost to the Forerunners, The Flood was pushed back. And only after Humanity was defeated and de-evolved, did the Flood return. Imagine that. The Flood, a highly intelligent Hive mind who's intellect only grows as they consume more. With the ability to manipulate Neural Physics when they get large enough. Impossible to exterminate. And they never forget anything. A endless wave of Bio-mass that consumes all...and it was afraid. Afraid of the one race that it could never beat. Afraid of the Humans who fought it past a standstill. And would have won if not for the Forerunners. They fear the rise of their old enemy once more. Fear the return of the race who grew stronger as the Flood fought it. They fear Humanity's return. They are afraid that their ancient enemy will arise once more, stronger than ever before.
What's horrifying, is that the Flood never revert. Once they have learned something, it's there forever because of neural physics. Every Gravemind is the same intelligence.

@@galbert117 it's not even that they didn't know. It was told in one of the books (I forget) that the forerunners knew of the parasite but didn't consider it a threat (the parallels between Halo and today are astonishing man). The Forerunners and Ancient Humans had a deep rivalry and resentment of each other so when it looked like they were invading, the Forerunners had the "we're defending ourselves against their onslaught" to justify their war. When the Forerunners did find out about the parasite they bunched it with Humans as another sub conflict with fighting humans. "... And now you bring this sickness on our shores." Ur-Didact, Forerunner Supreme Commander. The only time they realized the flood was a potent foe was near the end of the war when the humans were practically facing extinction. They didn't care about the reasons the humans were invading, just that they were invading. It's comparable to when the Mongols invaded the Roman Empire. Iirc the humans tried to send diplomats, but that was far too late during the beginning of the war. The Humans were assholes, but not arrogant. It's also the fact that during the "pre-war" the flood managed to infect faster than the humans to catch up as seen in one of the terminals "... Is it possible we finally got here first?" The humans knew of the Floods imminent and potent danger so they took no risks and sterilized each infected world/ship. I’ve always preferred the original lore of the flood being an unknown extragalactic parasite from beyond the Milky Way galaxy. The mystery added to the terror of the flood, making it seem like it could have devoured countless other galaxies before it came to our own.
Well in the books the dust came from outside the milky way and as we know the precursors had seed with life many galaxies before ours, and my personal teory is that the ships that contained the dust weren't of precursor oringin, because the humans did not recognize them even considering the humans were familiar with precursor tech, is probable they consumed other civilization in other place to make their return to the milky way
And also when the flood retreated it is mention they went outside the milky way and hundreds of years later when they returned to consume the forerrunners, the flood was diferent, like it evolved, so maybe in that time the flood was spreading in other galaxies, besides is most probable the flood ensure to keep a part of his forces outside the milky way knowing the treat of the rings

Because boneswords as said in lore completely destroy the nervous system of whatever creature they get a clean hit on so any combat forms that are brought down cant be revived theyd just be lumps of flesh on the ground and that means the flood won't have any use outside of biomass also warriors have skin harder than diamonds so combat forms arent gonna be braking through that easily.

Lastly, the stories are incredibly simple for the most part (Some outliers here and there). Most stories basically are just good vs evil which is generic. The villains do evil shit just for the sake of being bad (no one wakes up and says lets do evil deeds). Most villains might as well have a flashing neon sign that says "I'm a bad guy" (Maul, Palpatine, Malgus etc.). What terrifies me the most about the flood, and what in my opinion makes them the most menacing yet tragic adversaries to ever be conceived of in Scifi, is the fact that they are a perversion of the very beings that created life as we know it. Imagine that. Imagine how magnificent the Precursors must have been. Neural-Physics, inter-dimensional travel, concepts that have grounds in real life that we can't even begin to grasp. Beings far beyond our comprehension only to be pushed to near extinction by their own creations, and to return as a corrupted and twisted version of what they used to be. Set on consuming and assimilating everything they were responsible for creating in the first place into one singular being. That to me is true horror.
Being 7 years old and having fun wrecking house as master chief to abruptly have it become a horror game was the most nerve rattling experience I had as a kid gaming!!!!

I mean, what the fuck did humanity do? They were just like "hmm this is interesting" at first then "oh he'll nah, this needs to end". Not like the flood came Ikea with assembly instructions, they didn't know what it was gonna become. I mean it was originally the forerunners fault tbh

The Momentum to our all sins. The Flood are one of the most deadliest form of parasites I’ve have encounter in literature media. The Flood don’t just create a zombie form, but create a Hive Mind that could out think any individual organisms, and worst they will used the intelligence of the host. Considering that the Forerunners were extremely intelligent and knew the strength and weakness of their technology, and considering that the Flood would’ve won the War were it not for the Halo Array firing killing everything. Though if the Flood were to be released in Cortana Galaxy they will spread rapidly and there will be nothing that Cortana or her Created can do anything about it, and considering that they all may be affected by Logic Plague. There is nothing we can do about it to stop it if it continues to grow.

Only thing about the Prometheans, they were actually the Warrior caste among the Forerunners, they volunteered to be composed into the robotic beings (Knights) so they could better fight the flood, the Didact later composed humans in an attempt to increased the number of Knights when their numbers started to fall.
Hey guys, since the flood is destined to return in halo, if a gravemind does return and master chief encounters it, do you think he will remember him and comment on it, or the personality be different and not even comment on master chief. Also do you think that the gravemind should have had a name.
one of the many tangents I wanted to go down but constrained was that the way the Primordial merged with the Gravemind, and something said that the Gravemind in the games has the memories of the ancient one, and I think that there was a proto on a shield world that also shared memories if I remember right.
MetaNerdz Lore yeah but you know they might do something stupid like, well idk. What I got from all of this is the old adage “Never bite the hand that feeds you.” The forerunners tried to beat their master, but the master had other plans. That is why they’re the master and you aren’t.
Can I just point out how the addition of the precursors actually breaks part of Halo's story? Well, not specifically that, but the rewrite that went with it did. Let me ask, why did the Covenant attack Humans? The original story was that the prophets were treating the forerunners like gods, letting them run the Covenant like a cult. They figured out that humans were descendants of the forerunners, which is why a human hand was always needed to activate forerunner tech. However, if the word got out to the rank and file of the Covenant, it would be revealed that the prophets were lying for their own gain, so they wanted to wipe humans out. But with the rewrite of forerunners and humans being 2 distinct species that evolved completely independent of each other, the catalyst for the whole series no longer exists. They also removed the explanation for why humans are the only ones able to activate forerunner tech.
The latter is explained anyway. Humans "inherited" the mantle of responsibility when the Halo rings were fired. It's by design that humans can operate any and all forerunner tech. I guess the first bit now changed to that they were simply mistaken. Also, according to other Halo lore, the Covenant wanted to claim Harvest since it contained many forerunner structures. Obviously humans declined and the Covenant got so salty over this that they vowed to destroy all of us.
@@Dennis19901 Also worth pointing out is the fact that many modern humans have inherited geases which were passed down by the Liberian that granted them an unconscious familiarity with Forerunner technology. (Hence this is the in-universe explanation for why Humans often don’t need to be told how to activate Forerunner structures, we “just know”. Also the Forerunner artifacts that the Covenant’s luminaries picked up on Harvest weren’t artifacts at all but were rather the Humans living on the surface itself because Humanity was already marked as the Reclaimers to the Mantle.
Basically to top off what Dennis and Panda said, when the Covenant found Harvest they were confused af as to why there were so many forerunner "artifacts" on the planets surface. Then after some consulting with a fragment of I think Mendicant Bias they realized that all this time they had mistranslated the symbol for "reclaimer" as in a person/group of persons as "reclaim" as in, reclaim these artifacts Basically Harvest made the Prophets realize their whole religion was a lie and the true heirs to the Forerunners stache were the humans, not them. In a bid to retain the power that leading a zealously religious stellar. . .empire (i think thats a good term for what the Covenant is) they waged war on the humans in order to wipe out the biggest risk to the entire Covenant as they knew it. It was this uncharacteristic bloodlust for human blood that ultimately became their undoing, ironically as up until that point the Covies tried to subjugate wrather than eliminate (even the Hunters/Lekgolo who literally were eating their artifacts, or atleast - some were). That combined with the rising interspecies tension, bids for power amongst the High Prophets before and during the war, and finally their attempt to excise the second oldest species of the Covenant basically resulted in the Great Schism and their own undoing So, no - the rewrite doesn't break the lore, instead it takes the original idea and adds depth to it while retaining aspects of the original prompt (atleast, the one you provided)
@@Dennis19901 The whole 'mantle of responsibility' rewrite is just convoluted crap that should've never been added in the first place, it degrades the lore as a whole.

It’s not everyone’s cup of tea but it ties in to the lore so I’d recommend either playing it or watching the cutscenes or a summary on UA-cam. Hope that helps feel free to ask more questions!
Δp well technically you’d get to the end of mission two on halo 2, THEN do ODST then go back to halo 2 & as ODST takes place within 24 hours and starts when the covenant carrier goes into slipspace at the end of the mission.
@@ThePilleroflightning if there is then there is nothing we could to protect ourselves or end the monstrosity. We can only hope it never finds us or purge everything and hope life restarts itself
Damn, didn't talk about those gigantic neural star highways (giant space rubber bands) that were created/controlled by the Precursors... Which subsequently could be controlled by the flood. Also that the flood consciousness is an eternal hivemind, and all graveminds retain all memories forever- i.e. the Halo 3 gravemind remembered the Forerunner war.
I think my favorite part of the Flood/Forerunner war and Mendicant Bias's betrayal is that the Primordial didn't have to lie or misconstrue facts at-all. It really was the forerunner's actions coming back to bite them. Every action that cost the forerunners and ultimately lead to their extinction was one of arrogance, kind of proving the Precursors right on why they weren't worthy.
Halo lore is one of those golden nuggets of sci fi fiction that everybody has a basic understanding of, but not many know just how amazing and extensive it is.
@Adderall Overdrive yeah, fiction. it’s not real 🤣

The Flood are truly terrifying because of how they can take away an enemies greatest champions. And then use all of their talents against their former allies. Worst every single individual they consume/infect all of their knowledge is forever stored within the Gravemind. Making it possibly the most intelligent and wisest creatures in Halo.
Not to mention the fact that each gravemind also possesses the knowledge of it's previous iterations, basically making it come back smarter every time
@@Dr.Pootis and that the only way to truly defeat the flood is to wipe out all existence of them down to the last molecule.
I ebb and flow like water, through rock and metal and time." (roughly paraphrased)

technically speaking, the flood is not a threat to the galaxy, or even life in the galaxy, just biodiversity.
in a way, it's still upholding the Mantle, it just doesn't allow any free will.
FINALLY A MAN OF SMARTS
Wrong, they have goals that the precursors did. They are testing humanity to get the Mantal of Responsibility from the precursors. It was made clear in Primordial. They will test humanity but the outcome 'has not been decided yet'. Which is turn means depending on how humanity respects life and biodiversity, they might retreat on their own and allow freewill. As the Primordial said 'It has not been decided'.
@@elipsorange
Your partially correct, but missing the main point:
The Flood are NOT the Precursors.
@@elipsorange
And you once again miss the point: the Precursors allowed the corruption of the "dust" for revenge against the forerunners, saw it as a way to prevent any of their creations from ever turning against them again.
So far it seems that humanity is the most underestimated species in the halo Universe. No matter bad things are, they always find a way
@@bensadfleck9972 that is pretty much how humans really are .

Though if the Flood were to be released in Cortana Galaxy they will spread rapidly and there will be nothing that Cortana or her Created can do anything about it, and considering that they all may be affected by Logic Plague. There is nothing we can do about it to stop it if it continues to grow.
Bro if you think the flood is bad go look up warhammer40k , the Xenos (alien) Species Tyranids, imagine the flood but far worse and grosser + Scary, that being said they do have alot of similarities.

Or worse still having to deal with activating Windows in space.

Can the Flood create any kind of bio form they want in shape, form, or purpose with enough biomass like Kaiju sized monsters, pure forms that would be able to mimic voices to confuse and lead their enemies into a false sense of safety, cybernetic pureforms, or pureforms that would act as bioships like the Tyranids do?
those are both excellent questions, I think I might make a speculation/theory/going deep into the restraints in the lore kind of video
Theoretically yeah, we've already seen them be able to mutate their pure forms into a variety of shapes and forms to fill different situations. So if the Gravemind felt it necessary, I'm sure he could introduce new mutations into his pure forms to increase their lethality.

Infinite’s set to last 10 years, so even if they aren’t in it during the initial release, I’m certain they’ll show up sometime during the game’s lifecycle. 🙂
What blows my mind more, is that UNSC don't even Know that ancient Huemans were more technologically advanced than them now.
We need the Halo story to come full circle with the return of a few or more Forerunners (maybe Builders), Flood/Precursors, and Huemans finding out their ancient past and finally receiving The Mantle of Responsibility.

The Story of the Halo series is an absolutely deep and fascinating story especially when it comes down to the FLOOD. They came nearly within grasp of assimilating almost every lifeform out there!
ether-way with their back against the wall they pressed that reset button and reset the entire galaxy back to the beginning of time. Talk about a bummer scenario but maybe everyone will get along this time ...Haha
Great job explaining everything by the way dude, you explanations were on point and i didn't hear any discrepancies in the canon or story.
All I heard out of all this was; “Exterminatus.”
Yes, Inquisitor, this planet right here.
Lol they literally were glassing planets, which is a similar method to Exterminatus, and that still didn't stop the flood.
Also, Halo Rings beat exterminatus any day, and flood still came back...

Great video I really enjoy "ancient" Halo lore.

But I so hope if the flood eventually return and master chief encounters him, that the gravemind comments on master chief like he did in floodgate, and in cortana. Also if anyone heard in halo 3 on the last mission halo, when getting near Johnson’s warthog, in the tunnel you hear him saying something, on how he will return. And in the gravemind log in halo wars 2, it is finally confirmed that a gravemind will return, hopefully with the same voice, and wanting revenge on both cortana and chief
I listened to this video during my 2 hour commute home from work and man it was great. I always have been a big halo nerd lol
Playing against the flood in the original HALO CE, was one of the creepiest and scary video game experiences I ever had.

And that's it? I quitted halo for YEARS before actually finishing it
Wow, that's a rich backstory! Well-written sci-fi. I've never played any of the halo games, so I had no idea the story was so deep.
Im only discovering this out now. This is so entertaining! I want more! Books a d strategy games, movies and more TV series!
The Forerunner Saga by Greg Bear is a trilogy of novels that contains more lore on the Floods than any other individual source, including the games.
Absolutely fascinating, thank you!
After watching so many of your Star Wars videos I loved seeing this halo one.
I love that you showed the terminals from halo three but followed with information that directly contradicted them in halo 4.

Storytelling at it's finest, tying in real world mythology and history into a fictional universe's mythology and history. Impressive.
What I got from all of this is the old adage “Never bite the hand that feeds you.” The forerunners tried to beat their master, but the master had other plans. That is why they’re the master and you aren’t.
The gravemind is the creepiest and also the coolest of characters and my favourite quote is " what am I I am a monument off all your sins"

Absolutely marvelous summary. Perfectly written, very clear, succinct, and terrifying. 10/10 would listen again 👍🏼
Damn good point
Then after some consulting with a fragment of I think Mendicant Bias they realized that all this time they had mistranslated the symbol for "reclaimer" as in a person/group of persons as "reclaim" as in, reclaim these artifacts
Basically Harvest made the Prophets realize their whole religion was a lie and the true heirs to the Forerunners stache were the humans, not them. That combined with the rising interspecies tension, bids for power amongst the High Prophets before and during the war, and finally their attempt to excise the second oldest species of the Covenant basically resulted in the Great Schism and their own undoing
So, no - the rewrite doesn't break the lore, instead it takes the original idea and adds depth to it while retaining aspects of the original prompt (atleast, the one you provided)
@@Dennis19901 The whole 'mantle of responsibility' rewrite is just convoluted crap that should've never been added in the first place, it degrades the lore as a whole.
This was truly fascinating to watch from start to finish. Thank you for making this!
How can 343 and Paramount create anything less than a masterpiece with source material like this
Because they hate it and want gone woke.
The Floods Always Been so Interesting to Me. They’re Not the Average Zombie Plague that will Devour Your Flesh or Take your Body. No the Flood Devours YOU, it Literally Eats Your Mind, it Takes Everything that Makes You Unique and EATS it. The Flood don’t Kill You, they EAT YOU
I didn't realize that the Halo universe had their own Tyranid race. They're quite similar, but cool in their own Lovecraftian ways.
I always saw Halo as a clean sci-fi universe without cosmic horrors like this. If I had known, I might have played these games. Very cool.
Also the Forerunners are like the Eldar as well.
'vEry cool.'.
compared to the main omniverses's/franchise's? and/or let alone as something also nearly similar to back in the halo franchise's like the marathon multiverse's (kind of. they have such like the w'rkncacnter beings/forces(?) there in their setting for example)?
no. the halo universe's and galaxy's still is very Causally-bound clean type of a sci-fi verse alright, so long as one only focuses Mostly still on those like UEG/UNSC era humankind's, the covenant empire races', or even the ecumene forerunners'/pre-UEG/UNSC era Humankind's time, etc anyways.
(now Yet still, there is the Psion-like 'endless' whatever corp beings, to even that telekineti-esc(?)/strong magnetistic(?) capability (on their individuals) of the ecumene forerunners', few etc all of a sudden popping up now of all times in Every new (343I-made mostly) game there in recent (post-bungie era-owned) Years without much clear context still sometimes).
I was one of those boys who grew up in the 90's only to rent movies for the explosions and action scenes, i always found it difficult to understand and follow what was going on. Same went for gaming hence why I was always skipping cutscenes to get back to the action. From a diehard Halo fan your 22 minute video literally explained the whole lore of this and actually made me understand things so much better and easier so thank you. i only played halo 3 as a kid at a friends house and just played 1 level. wish i could play the whole series :(
damn gotta fix that they are awesome
@Ninja Love
Ooo a potential new fan!
If you want to play them in release order it goes:
Combat Evolved, 2, 3, ODST, Reach, 4, and then 5.
If you want to play them in the timeline of events it goes:
Halo Wars (an RTS game but canonically happens first) then Reach, Combat Evolved, 2, ODST, 3, 4, 5, and Halo Wars 2.
If you don’t have an Xbox there are plenty of books that you can read and All of the games except for 5 are in the process of being released on PC if you’d rather wait for that.
Ninja Lover ODST is the name of a spin-off game which runs in parallel to the events of Halo 2. Instead of playing as a Super Soldier like the other games, you play as an Orbital Drop Shock Trooper or ODST.
Halo Wars is an RTS or real time strategy game which is very different than the other games which are all first person shooters. In an RTS you are like a commanding officer directing soldiers where to go. You can look up gameplay of a game like Starcraft or command and conquer to see what I’m talking about.
All Halo games are on steam now
So you'd best get on that...

When I played the flood level as a kid I started crying and had to take a break
Damn, didn't talk about those gigantic neural star highways (giant space rubber bands) that were created/controlled by the Precursors... Which subsequently could be controlled by the flood. Also that the flood consciousness is an eternal hivemind, and all graveminds retain all memories forever- i.e. the Halo 3 gravemind remembered the Forerunner war.
This is why we can't have nice things, some ancient devolved mutated life form always messes things up.
Came here after watching the Halo finale today
