Good video. I live out of of the city and somewhat in the country. Not too far out.. I have a well with plenty of free water that I doubt will ever run dry due to my being close to the great lakes. Even then I still use a rain barrel.

Very helpful video and good engineering work. When I set up my drip and micro sprinkler system I had left over parts I didn’t need and parts I needed that I didn’t have!
I'm sure I'll run into that problem. I'm almost certain I will be 100-200 ft short of distribution tubing, and I will have to order more. However, I'm going to set up my container garden last, because that's the easiest to water manually. I placed my order with the intent that if I wind up short, I'll just piece together the container garden portion. As long as I have the raised beds taken care of, life is good.

Dude, your my hero. Look @ your backyard! I am just installing a bed for the 1st time & was wondering how you incorporate a drip line into it. Have rainbirds that pop up in the backyard but I want to put in drip system. What an amazing backyard, who needs all that grass, yeah some for the dog or kids but I want most of it for fruit trees & food. Just put in tree of life & fig- planting the blueberry next week. My husband thinks I'm crazy- but I'm on my way!

Thanks. As I stated in the video, they are all from the website DripDepot. You have to customize the parts you need to your specific design. They have dozens of sample designs in their literature, so I recommend going to their website and checking them out. They also sell pre-fab kits for small setups.
Great video! Teflon tape can prevent any of your threaded connections from leaking. Sometimes the rubber gaskets just don't do the trick.

I bought all my parts for the drip system in the fall and winter knowing that prices on Chinese plastic would at least double if you could get it at all. Great video - the only one I've found to handle combining rainwater and tap water. I'm going to try this exact same thing, but where would you add a timer to this? right after they Y where the two water sources come together? I don't mind manually switching from the rainwater tank when it runs out, but i don't want to have to go out and turn things on and off all time.

Thank you for this. I made the mistake of deploying a drip tube with a minimum PSI requirement so gravity-fed will not even drip slowly from my barrels. I may have to reinvent in the future once I get significant barrels collected.

Nice addition with the water barrels! Wish we could use them but doesn't rain here enough. Permaloc fitting are the best. (PSI Requirements is 25psi for tube, 15psi for tape.) For my setup I used drip tube for bushes,trees and drip tape for long runs in the vegetable garden. I used an auto flush valve to automatically drain the line after each watering (a little overkill). Also installed a controller so I could separate my zones to control the water each zone gets and so I can water early in the morning in order to prevent evaporation.
I would argue that the areas where it doesn't rain a lot are the areas you want rain barrels the most. Every drop becomes precious. The idea behind the rain barrels isn't just to collect water, though. They're also tanks to mix fertilizer and distribute the fertilized solution evenly.

I've been using drip depot for a couple years now. I haven't had any issues with them (prices are among the best, too). FYI they make in-line mixers for both drip pressures and hose pressures if you want to do your fertilization in batches without putting stuff in your barrels. Just gotta make sure you have a backflow preventer when you use the hose bibs. Another heads-up, you'll have to clean that in-line filter very frequently. Any algae will clog it instantly.
Might be worth setting up your zone shutoffs in a way for you to connect an air compressor to blow out all the lines at the end of the season. I'll add a removable cap to the end of each of the mainlines (faster to get the water out that way) and then once the mainline is cleared, you can go section by section and get all of the emitters cleared out. The more stuff you have in parallel without individual shutoffs, the more of a pain it can be to drain at the end of the season. I've gravity drained part of our mainlines before, but I doubt that does anything for your 1/8" mainline to the emitters or any of your dripline.
I totally need to get my shutoffs hidden in valve boxes, right now they're just under mulch and marked with some rocks. I don't think I'm quite ready to connect our rainbarrels to the drip irrigation yet. I'm fairly certain our runs are too long to just run off of gravity feed. For the rainwater, I think I'm going to just get a lift-pump and use them to hand water / fertilize with an inline injector or siphon.
I will probably look into an in-line fertilizing option later down the road. I’m not concerned about the lines freezing because it only freezes at night here, so the drain valve I installed should be sufficient. It rains a lot here, so my rain barrels will be flushed out a lot. It should help keep algae down, but on the other hand, using the barrels to mix fertilizer could cause a bloom. It’ll be a lot of experimenting.
I did all of my drip irrigation with Drip Depot parts too. I’ve purchased some extra parts from other brands on Amazon and they are extremely inferior to Drip Depot, despite being around the same price!
Drip irrigation is such a game changer. Having a timer is crucial too. Everything gets watered evenly early in the morning right before the sun comes up, which is especially important in the scorching hot summers my area sees.

Excellent to hear. I knew I made the right choice going with Drip Depot. I can't wait to finish my setup. I must've spent 2 hours today fertilizing my garden with 5 gallon buckets and 1.5 gallon watering cans. I hope to never have to do this again and just feed everything through my rain barrels.

I have a couple fish tanks that I use to water my plants. I am totally going to do this and just dump the weekly waste water into the barrel!

A Homogeneous dose of water to all and then hand/hose water to those plants needing more water.I suppose you will turn off system on days when there has been ample Rain...Dale you are a Handsome Sausage !
I am installing shut-off valves on each raised bed, so I will be able to control what fertilizer goes where. Tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, etc. can all share the same fertilizer, but I certainly wouldn't want to feed my fruiting vegetables with the higher nitrogen mix I make for my greens. That would be a disaster for fruit. The shut-off valves are only around $3-4 a piece, so I made sure to get one for every single bed. It's a lot of work installing, but like you said, it'll save so much time, and I only need to do it once.
If we are what we eat, that explains why Dale is a giant sausage 😅

You definitely can! The work itself is very simple. It's all in the planning. Lay out the equipment you need beforehand, measure twice before you cut and take your time. It can be a fun weekend project.
Tie one end of the distribution tubing to a tree, slowly back from the tree allowing the tubing to gently and slowly untwist. In coiled form, it is twisted and will kink 100% of the time, guaranteed. It is this twist that creates the condition of kinking, mostly.
sometimes I wonder if you could use the house water pressure to siphon the rain barrel water. I wonder if that is easy to setup with as high of a flow as possible for the rain barrel, probably needs to be a sealed system because the house water would pressurize whatever you are syphoning.

Thank you. I'll probably install 0.5 gal/hr drippers to the 5 gallon paint buckets and 1 gal/hr drippers to the large, black containers. That should make things evenly distributed per volume.
I have just laid visqueen through out my planned garden area on both sides of my shed. Currently the visqueen is under all my raised beds, which I have not added soil to yet. I was wondering, if you cut out the visqueen under your raised beds or maybe just poked a few holds in the visqueen, to let water drain?
Thank you for the very helpful video! I'm about to build my own rain barrel/house connection drip system. I'm wondering if you considered adding any automation to it and whether you had ideas for check valves. I purchased a RainPoint Bluetooth hose water timer that I will connect at the house and then continue with the same house line leader hose setup. This should automate the drip irrigation from the house. However, I can't add a second hose timer to the rain barrel because there is not enough pressure for it to function. I've been looking at some manual timers for the rain barrel connection. My thought process is this...the system should use rainwater first, then there is a soil sensor that connects to the Bluetooth hose timer on the house. If the rain barrel is empty and the soil is still dry, then the house water should kick in. The problem I see is how do I prevent the rain barrel from filling up with house water. I would need some sort of check valve, or I'll have to manually switch the water source at the Y fitting. Any thoughts?

For gravity feed to work with drippers, you would need a lot of head pressure, so your water source would have to be pretty high. I plan on adding a water transfer pump to my rain barrel to solve this problem.

Yes. It's more than enough to irrigate my entire garden and my entire container garden simultaneously. 1/2 tubing can move quite a bit of water.
New to gardening- I have a garden bed perhaps 20m long. Will water drain from one end (tank) to the other if there are holes drilled every now and again in the plastic pipe (how to know if there be enough pressure?). If water just goes into the holes closest to the tank and doesn't reach the other end, doesn't meet my purpose
Odd question. could you run the house water hose into the rain barrel and attach itto a toilet flapper(?) if that's what it's called.... When the water in the rain barrel gets low, it would automatically fill up a bit. Or would that not work? (just spitballin' here. I loved your video.

It is Part 1202, Irritec Perma-Loc Tubing Cross - Size : 1/2". You will have to purchase three Part #1191 Irritec Perma-Loc Tubing Coupling Valve - Size : 1/2" as well, so you can turn it on and off.

The T-filter is sold through Drip Depot, and isn't listed on my Amazon Store. All the specific irrigation parts were purchased through Drip Depot. The only items linked on my Amazon Storefront are the generic parts (hose connectors, hole punch, tubing cutters, etc.). You will have to go to Drip Depot's website and custom build your application. They have tons of parts.

How are you handling your overflow. I also live in NC and many of our rains could fill the barrels in a very short period of time.

Did your white madeira or del San Juame gran split at all last year?
My White Madeira was split resistant. Heavy rains would still damage the fruit, but it wouldn't split in half like a Black Madeira or I-258, which explode like a grenade. I did not get enough fruit on my DSJG the first season to really assess its split resistance. I'll need another season to figure that one out, but the fruits I did get were the best tasting figs I've had to date.

Was the 25 PSI regulator okay in the end or did you have to go lower?
You could use soaker hoses.
I do not like soaker hoses. Almost all the water comes out of the first few feet, and the remaining hose produces almost no drip effect at all. I think they're a horrible invention, and I never use them as a result. I recommend drip tape instead. It is much more effective and 10% of the cost.
How would you use a pump on this system and which one would you use.
A pump is not necessary when fed by the house line, because the water main in the street (or your well if you have one) is already pressurized. When fed by the rain barrels, I don't need a pump, because I use a gravity feed shown here: ua-cam.com/video/NmAHq447XkY/v-deo.html
If you want to use rain barrels, but you don't want to elevate them, you're going to have to install a pump somewhere after the rain barrel. That will be up to you, because every system will be different.
So that’s enough pressure on the rain barrel to drip into the garden?
How do you prevent the water in the barrels from going bad, algae or other stuff?
By emptying them regularly. Algae grows because the water sits. You have to dump them constantly, and the best way to do this is to irrigate.
How would you do multiple rain barrels located farther away from the water source.

As long as the rain barrels are at a higher elevation than the drip lines, the water will make it.
Are your raised sitting over landscape fabric? What is your view about that vs. on bare ground?
No. The raised beds are built out of 2x8's, which have a depth of 7-1/4 inches. The 7 inches of soil is enough to suffocate anything on the ground, so there is no need to have landscape fabric under the beds. I use weed barrier in the walkways as permanent weed suppression. You can set your raised beds on bare ground no problem with no fabric or barrier underneath, as long as you don't have a mole or vole problem. If that's the case, it isn't a bad idea to staple hardware cloth to the underside of the bed so nothing can burrow in, but plants can still get their roots through hardware cloth.
If you are going to place the raised beds directly on top of a lawn and you want peace of mind, mow the lawn as close as your mower can handle, then just toss some cardboard boxes on the ground before filling the bed. The cardboard boxes will suffocate any lawn underneath and naturally biodegrade.

It is enough to make it to the beds, but I don’t think it’ll be enough to make a 90 degree turn and irrigate. I think I will have to add a transfer pump.

Wherever you want as long as it's before the drippers. I assume it's just a time-controlled solenoid, so place it where you need it.
How you have city water or well you need a 300 gallon or less roll f rain water
I want to do this but I'm concerned the water pressure from the barrels won't be high enough to get to the furthest parts of the drip system. How is yours doing?
If you are running drip irrigation to a garden from a rain barrel, it will likely need a water transfer pump integrated. For a gravity fed system to work, the barrels need to either be right next to the garden, the garden needs to be small, or the water tank needs to be very high up. For a barrel and garden setup like mine, it won't be possible to feed the garden via the rain barrels without a transfer pump.

One barrel full lasts about 4 hours, what if it does not rain for 5 days? You need 20 barrels of water to keep watering your plants.
I hooked my system up to both the rain barrel and the outside spigot. If my rain barrels empty, I'll simply use the house line.

Drip Depot is finicky with shipping, Hoss tools has the same things.
They shipped mine very quickly, and it was a pretty big order. They were really fast. I was satisfied.
Perhaps you can fill plastic box with gravel too keep slithering creatures out

Centipede grass doesn't handle foot traffic. Dale tears it up very badly and it can never recover in the back because of him. Hence, I'm slowly ripping it out and replacing it with food. You can't have a lawn with that freight train running through.
