  • This video is created resulting from the numerous requests to be more detailed in how to hydrate butterflies for mounting. Here, I have gone thoroughly into detail on this process. I experienced a little hiccup when shooting this as the water main broke. I improvised so that the video would be complete. I used snow instead of water. I hope that you enjoy it. I love how you improvised with the snow - made me laugh! Great instructional video. I was actually surprised at how similar my own technique was, but I also learned some new things from your method that I am going to try. Much appreciated!

    How do you make a rehydration box using hot water?
    What would you recommend buying to start pinning butterfly and moths?

    How long do the butterflies have to dry after hydration and spreading and how to you prevent mold growth?

    Does this hold up against mould/mildew?

    Do you keep the box in the fridge?

    I would find it very helpful to know how your usual hydration box with the hot water is set up!
    How do you place the styropor with the specimens above the water? How much water do you use? Thank you so much!

    Hi there, I made a hydration box using a capful of pinesol and wet paper towels. Some droplets formed on the lid and fell onto my specimens unfortunately. The specimens were Blue Morphos and sadly the structural colouration on their wings was damaged by the droplets. Do you have any recommendations for how to avoid this in the future? It’s nearly impossible to not agitate the droplets when removing the lid from the box. Thanks in advance!

    What is pinesol? i google it and came out on a cleaning product? i have read that u also could use windex cleaner? is that possible?

    • @Butterfly_Art_Studio
      @Butterfly_Art_Studio  7 років тому

      That is correct. It is a cleaning agent. This is very useful. Windex I find can discolour certain species. So I don't use that.

      what makes pinesol the best so i can find something similar?

    • @Butterfly_Art_Studio
      @Butterfly_Art_Studio  7 років тому +1

      I have not yet found a species that this product discolours. This is why its good and it does not allow mold and fungus to grow for about 5 days. Look online for its ingredient list and look for a competitive product that has the same ingredients. This is what I found works best.

    why can't the wings get wet? and do you have any collecting videos? Have a look at my collecting videos.

      Wings that get wet become very difficult to spread and they usually crumple up. The ideal is to have the wings completely flat and spread evenly. Sometimes, wet wings will permanently lose colour.

    and oil to fry ??? excuse the question but are Italian and do not understand english. XDXDXD

      oil and fry? I am sorry, I do not understand your question. I remove oils by using acetone. I never fry the specimens. I use the humid box to relax the entire specimen so that i can pin it without damaging it. I hope this helps.
