I was in Navy boot camp with a guy whose father owned the Shelby Dealership in Garden Grove. I owned a Sunbeam Tiger at the time. Got to get a few "test " drives in 289 Cobras until I had to go to Electronic school. Later I owned a 66 GT-350 SCCA BP car that I ran in Hawaii. The original owner crashed his 65 GT-350R at Bridgehampton and then bought a 66 street car and swapped all the parts over. At Riverside in 1969 the car set a speed record being clocked at 157 MPH on the straight with 4.11 gears at the Riverside Time Trails. Since those days I have also owned 2 more Tigers and a Boss 429. Today I have a 2017 GT-350 that I only autocross. I raced for 20 years in the SCCA driving Mazdas and Mustangs. Did not get to run any West Coast tracks. I really miss those roadsters, big or small block.
@@DANTHETUBEMAN When you do, you will have the time of your life. Just one suggestion; keep a cooler with bottles of Snapple Ice Tea. When I come off the track, the first thing I grab is a bottle and chug it down.
Just no catching that 63 vette especially in the uphill straight...busy driver with a 289 on this track with all that shifting...nice lines though...great race...love these cars! Thanks for posting!
Spiffing! A jolly good show. I found this video to contain all the essentials for appreciation of the AC Cobra and its American users. RIP Carrol Shelby.
With the 289 setup you can probably brake later, throttle sooner. I would love to drive one and see how much success I could have controlling the throttle. Number one favorite sports car of all time. Yes I am prejudiced...
Thanks for the ride. Nothing like a small block Ford V 8 at song. Attended many races there with my dad. Had a Boss 302 myself. Won a raffle at Portland International Raceway with Carroll Shelby doing 3 laps in a 427 Cobra in the early 90's. Ride of a life time.
THANK YOU for posting these racing videos! ALL of us have dreamed of what it would be like to be behind the wheel of real Shelby Cobra... a Boss 302, 65 GT350R model... this gives a us a cool feel for it.
I drbeove a 289 Cobra once at Summit Point Raceway. Street version. Terribly handling car. Race version simply had better power to weight ratio. Closest race I ever had was at Watkins Glen against a GT350R. That car was fast & driver was good. I pushed my Sting Ray to the limit with oil and water guages maxed out. I thought sure the engine would let go. But I remember thinking I traveled 6 hours to race and if the engine goes It goes. It held! We were about equal on straight but I could get by in corners. Finally got him with about two laps to go.
Jesus! I about had a heart attack for you @3:45! First that guy almost runs you off the track, then he slams on his brakes in front of that Vette. Get his ass of the track!
Thats a cool run if i say so myself. Curves and strightaways ,what a great day to have a race! All the drivers respected their peers, i noticed alot of curtesy while driving, good sportsmanship guys ,good sportsmanship. They're right about 69 staying off the race track !
I'm sure you and I have met - I spent several years with Lynn Park - I know Jim B. and Jim F. through Lynn. I'm gonna post some of the other videos I have of the Parks on the track soon.
@@josstyk so i would assume your familiar with HMSA don't know if you knew we lost our technical director Steve Ferron last july he was my best friend and high school metal shop teacher.
great footage, great car, good driving, looks like an amazing day, is that the breaks scraping? no matter its still awesome haha please do more videos like this
yeah the 69 car was just flat out dangerous. That race was no place for that level of Inexperience. I've owned a very nice Unique replica. After owning/driving one, you can truly appreciate the level of intensity and balls it takes to drive a Cobra that hard nice job. go pros are a great invention! wish they had those back in the 60's.
Nice pass at 8:41 ! The corkscrew is awesome at Laguna! It scared the crap out of me the first time I saw it and I was only doing 40 in a crew van at the time during a test event rain delay. What motor is in your car? 289?
Holy shit man... Your friend is a great driver but the beginning of that race was plain dangerous... Your buddy showed good reserve in avoiding the bad driver and the tensity at race start props to him and his driving skill.
I'm hearing a lot of that ring gear singing. Typical of early sixties cars. My MGB did the same thing. I wonder if his Cobra even has synchromesh between 2nd down to first.
There's a lot of guys like 69 when they're supposed to point you buy they break check you not cool I would definitely had words with him after the race.
The Tiger was surprisingly well hooked up, rear end wise. How is that? Mebbe Gary Wheeler's Robert's Linkages?? Something from TractionMasters.. A la the Penske Camaro, Banned in TranAm, 1968... SEEN at Daytona and Sebring... With the 911s... J.C.
Yes, and I was able to get him and Edsel Jr. and Henry III to pose for a shot - Jim is on the far right of that image and Jim Farley from Ford Racing is in the middle (he was car 96 in the video).
The 289 can be built and seems to be a better all round fit. Has anyone ever done a direct comparison? I could see how the 427 could better for ponies but throwing it into a corner it might be a little "loose". A road race levels the playing field.
427s were too much for this car... the car is already lightweight and when you add the extra power, you lose grip and you eventually lose your brakes. Just my opinion, but the small blocks were the perfect plant for the era.
Sometimes I must think it must be hard to see the flagman's flags that he waves, the gren flag, the yellow flag, etc, only becasue with the bridge right behind him it makes it a little harder to see them, always use to seeing them with a clear background on the other side of the starter's stand like a lot of other racetracks......
Interesting - he mentioned that before the races, but seemed to hold his own so I never really thought much of it... he had it setup for Willow or similar I believe... good catch!

MrBenBoomer I'm sure it was a Sunbeam "Tiger" with essentially the identical Ford 289 in it as the Cobra's.

(probably another lap and nicely spliced in).
I wish there was a way to know when he is on the brakes.

OK... What happened at 6:41 the Vette and the white car completely disappear!! Was obviously some editing by the poster but why??
Same thing happend at 8.21. Yea like you said there is no reason for any editing for any of this
I removed any laps where no position changed and nothing happened of note. The edits were just to keep the action pumping.
Is that a Cobra of a Miata with a Cobra kit body?
10:40 LOL at the finger of disapproval at car #69
It actually looked as though #69 was trying to wreck him
69 was taking bad lines into the corners
