Profitable trade will get inpossible in the mid-late game because your empire will have expanded by a lot and everyone will start to hate you
Yeah but early game all that extra cash helps you get the ball rolling, by mid game you should have enough to self sustain. All that trade early game =2-4 extra armies or quicker infrastructure gains
That 800 would have only got you 2 units, which would then have cost you each turn. You can use them to conquer, but you could instead the trade deal and recruit the units a bit later or recruit mercenaries later, and still do the same conquering.

Are there also foreign trade nodes like there was in Shogun 2? Some that you'd park trade ships on?
Your dog would have preferred you to recruit units (mercenary war dogs) instead of paid for trade. 🤣
