Haven't seen Victor Lucas since my high-school days....damn....great to see him again 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
This review is exactly the type of thing that makes Victor one of the very few game reviewers whose opinions I value.
I'll still try it myself, I'll just have a better idea of how far I should go if it doesn't grab me right away.
Great review Vic! Surprised by the score but it really drove your point home.
Watching Vic and reviews on the run for 2 decades now? I think lol. And he’s always honest, thorough and one for the best. Giving your personal opinion needs to be respected in this industry. Just like soulsborne game etc, it’s not for everyone. This looks like a work of art though
Oh boy 3am EP Review!
Great honest review. Thanks Vic
Xbox really needed this! It’s a shame they keep missing the mark over and over. Thank you for the review!
Awesome review Victor!
I just have not been sold on this game... All I ever see is torch lit sword fighting in foggy, dark tribal environments and these ethereal looking close ups... constant close ups... As if its a close up simulator.I have no idea of what this game really is other than a cinematic experience? This review is the most Ive seen of this game. Solid review, thanks Vic!
Plus advertising has been non existent. Usually it would be hyped up with presentation, teasers, something
Btw your summary almost reminds me of Tomb Raider (Survivor Origin trilogy)
The first game did feel like that at first. Then eventually finds its ground and exploration, combat, and story interweaves throughout the narrative
But to build that in a short amount of time, how any game can establish where it wants to go in five hours. That's a speed run
Close up simulator 😂
It's a walking simulator with occasional sword play
So pumped to find this channel. Been watching EP since I was a kid great to see Victor still doing it! I like the honesty in this review. We have been burned way too much lately by false marketing, lies in general, and shills who refuse to criticize games in fear of missing out on a review copy. Stay true!
That’s a tough review but it’s also reinforces why when I need a reliable reviewer for movies,tv, tech or a new video game I come to ep. Thanks Vic
Vic always delivers
The game is gorgeous. The presentation and subject matter are ambitious...but this is a sequel/next iteration that should build from the first game (esp since development took 5+ years). Honestly, this game feels like really great DLC.
For a full-fledged sequel, adding a really simple skill tree would have been nice since the combat is literally 1:1 the same as the first game. Also, maybe adding a very small semi-open area with side content exploring Senua's past, such as a quest exploring where her inner voices started, or previous battles from her past with her tribe, backstory on the side characters, etc. Anything would have made for interesting optional content.
Lastly, adding a new game+ could have been something really unique and different, for example in the 2nd playthrough, you hear different inner dialogue, new enemy encounters in areas that previously did not have any, different puzzles, etc. Just minor things to spice up a second playthrough that don't have to be overly expensive to add.
I feel they did the same with the order 1886 where there was some missing material that was pulled out. There's a lot of key art in Tesla's shop that seems to confirm this. The first senua was sold to us as being a short double A title so expectations were low. It seems like it should have been priced in a similar manner to the first, because the length seems right on track with their history when it comes to their story driven games. Granted the tech assets may have been what was being paid for, but the content itself never increased.
Interesting 🤔 wasn’t expecting that score at all
I love victors sunglasses! Anybody know brand and model?
lol those are Ray-Bans originals
@@cicitrout6266thank you !
I agree with your score.
I think we have the issue of places like Sony giving Santa Monica, Naughty Boy, and Insomniac a fool's ransom worth of money to add in as much as they want, with excellent results. The problem being then these games become incredibly expensive and unwieldly, and if it doesn't pop with the audience, or is poorly timed (Horizon 2 anyone?) studios then think "Welp, back to looter shooters again for the cheap cash in"
Games like Hellblade are important in that they are BOTH grand but focused. a small team like Ninja theory can make a techincally marvelous game with a great story, with the drawback of not having the Naughty Dog money, so they can't make it 30 hours. I'm personally happy games like Senua exist
Sony doesnt have problems selling AAA games, but the rest of the industry does. Games like Suicide Squad, Immortals of Avenum, Calistol Protocol, Redfall and Starfield are failing. None of those games come anywhere close to something like God of War to be considered AAA. Even smaller games like HIFI Rush failed to make any real noise, so its not about development costs, its about making quality games people want. If the game is good, then it will sell, like Harry Potter, Baldurs gate 3 and Elden Ring,
Horizon is still a very successful franchise regardless of when it released though. Horizon Forbidden West sold 10 million copies before Sony gave it away on Ps Plus, and they said it cost them 8 million in sales in the Insomiac leaks. They still plan on making Horizon 3, a Tv show and MMO.
@@ronniepettway1328Starfield sold well. But Sony isn't the only developer. Diablo 4 sold well, even if Square wasn't happy, Final Fantasy 16 sold 3 million in a week, & they just said it's going to meet its sell goal, Elden Ring, Street Fighter 6, Tekken 8, Stellar Blade, Lies of P, all the Resident Evil Games, Monster Hunter, Valhalla being the best selling Assassins Creed game, Yakuza/Like A Dragon and Persona 5 both sold over a million in its 1st week. Games sell. Senua 2 was originally marketed as a big step up from the 1st game, which was done by a small team. But Vic feels it's a minor step up at best, and that's okay. We'll see if people run to play it in Gamepass and/or buy it. Hopefully it meets the Metrics Microsoft is looking for.
@@thefearmakerliveWell FF obviously isn’t doing what they want cuz square is going full multi plat and the reason those other games made those sales is because they were multi plats
Holly hell...Delusion ahoy! 😂
@@ronniepettway1328Who cares, third party is 99% of the industry anyway, stop acting like first party even matters out side of Nintendo
I'm 43 old school gamer, but my time is limited having a 1 year old and running a business. I will absolutely give this ago. I've been craving a shorter, straight forward current gen experience. I find myself leaning toward vintage games, or games like Deadcells or Lonely Mountain. You can get a fix with those and call it a day. I think this will do well BECAUSE it's not a giant open world with complex skill tree 200 hour epic. I bet there's more gamer like me out there than studios realize.
Ditto
100% agree. This is the disconnect with many other gamers. Everyone chooses their own priorities. Mine are my wife and kids. I understand if others can justify playing games for 100's of hours when the world goes by. I cannot without a certain amount of guilt that Im neglecting something more important. But hey that's my choice. But, I'm with you on shorter, direct games
Interesting - I am a 47YO without the kid, but very busy with life (as is pretty much everyone else) That said - I personally lean the exact opposite way. Having limited gaming time, the last thing I want to do is learn new mechanics and a new control scheme every few days with a new game. For me, I actually enjoy the big open world games that I can chew on for a month (or two) because they are easy to jump in to and play when I don't have much time. Everyone hates the Ubisoft model with icon diarrhea on a map, but I find it pretty comforting. I can plop down with an hour of gaming time and just pick out a few things I feel like doing. One night can be climbing some towers and crafting, the next can be knocking out some outposts (or equivalent), and another night I might feel like pushing the story forward. To me, the worst is sitting down (again, when you only have an hour or two) and feel like you are constantly fighting controls or spending half the time figuring out where to go or what you should be doing.
FF7 Remake: 30 hours of fetch quests
FF7 Rebirth: 80 hours of side quests and mini games
I hear you, just give me a straight up 5 hour interesting plotline that's fun to play. BUT THAT'S BORING... ugh.
@@michaelheim1149 interesting, thanks for sharing your viewpoint, never thought of it that way.
the industry is in such a terrible state we're thinking twice before saying we didnt like a game.
This review reminds me of the Key and Peele’s Gordon Ramsay skit. It was a back and forth of saying this meal was sh*tty but I love it and in the end he finally gave the review of “meh” 😂😂😂😂😂
Godspeed Ninja Theory. We love you 🌹
i cant wait till microsoft shuts them down and sony picks them up to make Heavenly Sword 2
@@TheOfficialChannelOfChannels It's crazy how much I loved that game. Right place right time I guess. ⚔️
@@D_9000 yeah , me too, it really sold the PS3 in the early years
I don’t really care about the corporate drama when I play these games. Why should it affect my enjoyment of a game? As a kid, I was never aware of studio squabbles when I was playing Castlevania, Metroid, Halo, or Gears of War. The 24-hour news cycle can ruin anything if you let it. Just ask yourself if the game you’re playing is fun. Don’t overthink it.
I think unfortunately the game is just down right boring and not fun.
Congratulations on not having a backbone or a soul.
Exactly. The masses don't really care or follow the inside baseball stuff. A great game or a great experience is a great game or great experience. I don't care what ms does in the background, Sony or any other company
Congratulations on not having a backbone or a soul.
'Don't overthink it'? But that's literally a critic's job.
I was hoping for better combat & more complex puzzles but it’s flat on those aspects.
Phil Spencer needs to go into rares office and make them develop a new banjo game
I think this game should be reviewed similarly to Silent Hill or other horror games. Hellblade is all about the experience and its been known to not have challenging combat. Hellblade is trying to create its own genre and its like a psychological thriller
Now this, this is a walking simulator. Cant wait to hear the discourse around this one...
Nope. A walking simulator is where all you do is walk. This game has combat, so it's not.
@@JBJblazebut it has more walking then combat
@@brentyetter2216 doesn't make it a walking simulator.
@@JBJblaze it's a slightly interactive cutscene that can be finished in 3-4 hours. 90% of "gameplay" is nothing but holding the left stick up.
You know it, I know it, we all know it. This "game" took 7 years to make, for what equated into 4 hours of "gameplay". If they took out all that "gameplay" this cutscene could have been finished 5 years ago.
Giant waste of time. Massive flop. Another x for Xbox.
If this was a PS game, you guys would be losing your shit about another sad dad over the shoulder walking sim and you know it. Have some fukn balls god damnit
@@d8l835 if walking and combat and puzzles don't make a game for you, then you have no idea what a game is. Have some frigging brains first, gorrammit.
I’m absolutely loving this game. I’m a little confused by why you would compare it to GOWR. 🤔
Obviously they’re two completely different types of games. I love the fact that it’s short because I have other games that I play routinely. Had this been a game that would have pulled me away from those games for too long, I probably would not be playing it.
So I liked what you didn’t like. 😊
It’s getting great reviews on Steam so most people are enjoying it. I guess that’s all that matters really.
Prepare yourself because you’re about to get a lot more subscribers. . 🤣
I agree on the amazing production value but the is no game here. It felt like this was one real-time qte driven experience, than an actual game. And that’s ok and ppl need to know that so they know what they are getting into.
Seems like the best and worst thing you can say about Hellblade 2 is that it's exactly what you think it'll be . No more, no less
This has always struck me as a tech demo rather than a game. The visuals are great. I'm hoping the next gears of war can bring graphics like these with amazing gameplay.
I give it a 8
Legit surprised with the rating 😮
This is one of the lowest scores out there. There isn't one negative review on Metacritic after 71 revews and it's at 81.
Feel like Victor was pulling his punches too much. Tell us where you found the game lacking.
Damn Vic, you savage!
How much $ do you charge for a 5hr tech demo?
$15 a month
It's crazy how Microsoft has a dream team of studios but yet they can't produce a bona fide legitimate hit. It always feels like it's one step forward two steps back.
They have had many bonafide hits (Foriza Horizon 5, Flight Simulator 2020, High Fi Rush) and they have an upcoming showcase with huge games to show.
But, yeah "xbox sucks" because most of us gamers don't console war like people like you do.
Great video. It's so unfortunate that this game review is mired in the recent studio closures. Incredibly short-sighted and ill-timed move by the bean pushers at Xbox/MS, huge loss of talent and studio culture (especially with the loss of Arkane Austin) and now infecting the experiences of games being released in the wake of it all. The executives who made that decision should really step down and resign, IMO.
Think when the price drops on this it will sell lots of copies.
7 years for 6 hours.. I can hear Phil Spencer loading his gun now. RIP Ninja Theory
Not a chance. Their next title has already been greenlit.
@quasisapien7762 that means absolutely nothing in the game industry run by corporations.

They didn’t begin development until after the announcement trailer in December 2019. The pandemic began three months later.
Idk why everyone keeps calling this a walking simulator are you guys not paying attention to the audio. It’s meant to be played with headphones. Walking through this game helps the player focus on the voices.
Finally! Someone that gets it! I think this installment is more than just a game, it's an experience as was the first game. Not sure why everything has to be over complicated to be fun.
@@Terrance865Blu I saw some review wish it had a skill tree and all these other things. I can appreciate a game with a skill tree I love fall out and games of that kind but not every game has to be power ups and complicated. I enjoyed Hellblade for the struggle in combat. Love Senua. She’s a small woman fighting guys bigger than her.
@@SirriffsalotNo doubt! Senua is deffintely punching above her weight class while dealing with mental health. The story and lore presentation alone makes this a worth while game. While I wouldnt have minded a bit more flushed out combat system, I think what they have compliments the narrative while not distracting...meaning the battles felt just as connected to the narrative as anything else. Every game doesnt have to be 70+ hrs long and open world to be good
I had a feeling this game was mediocre, next up is probably Avowed which to be honest doesn't look that good..
Must be a pony lol, game is fire right up a ponies alley. Best looking game of all time, no cap. Y'all ponies just cope, yall have nothing 1st party till mid '25 lol...

Stop lying, the game is really good. I can't say it's the best ever....but the game is really good 👌
Expect similar with fable and Perfect Dark.
I respect this review as always I’ve seen a lot of 9’s and 10’s for this game which I don’t think it’s worthy of those scores it’s a good game not great by any means
This is why you have to hype responsibly, people.
They focused on the wrong things
😩😩
Just like Ninja Theory did with Heavenly Sword, they focused more on the production value, than they did the actual gameplay. M$ might just shut them down.
I remember seeing Heavenly Sword in gaming magazines. Never played it. Then I heard it's mostly cinematics.. so.. yeah we're back to that presentation again
Given how much games are capable of, how a game like this can be a hit & miss from the original to its sequel. Usually a sequel is supposed to improve on what the first game established. Not degrade or fall apart. Something definitely happened behind the scenes for it to fall short 🤔
@@kadosho02 now I'm seeing gamers complain abt a part of the game, when they're literally just lighting torches.... that's crazy if it's true.
@@Killasim1 I find that kind of sad, it was a narrative item, that helped you traverse any dark area even back in the 2D days.
Even being part of a supernatural narrative, exploration is key.
Tomb Raider, Uncharted and many more used torches to aid players to move forward.
The odd thing, I heard about the first game, it felt like the ghosts were behind the wheel, more than the main character.
So do some players dislike exploration? 🤔 They are playing the wrong game if that's the case

@@ripleynosgoth yeah and some people think fallout 76 and cyberpunk are Masterpieces.
6.5 seems way too low. But I get it. People get themselves hyped up and expect a lot from a game that had such a long production period. But we are forgetting 2020 and 2021 delayed a lot of game developers. This likely would have launched almost 2 years ago if not for the entire country shutting down. That being said, this game is very similar to the original, with a huge jump in visual and a minor improvement in the combat. I agree the expectation for more innovation is warranted, but I don't understand giving it a score lower than the first game. But to each his own, I guess. Visuals, narrative, and sound design alone deserve at least a 7.5
A game that has nothing to offer but visuals deserves nothing more than a four and thats is being nice.
@game-sheriff like I said, it's way more than visuals. The sound design is extremely deep, immersive and draws the player into Senua's mind, the voice acting and mo-cap is top tier, on top of just being one of the most gorgeous games of the generation. All those things factor in. Yes, the gameplay is minimalist, but that should have been expected going off the original. I think people expected Senua to suddenly become Kratos, and that's not what the Hellblade series was ever supposed to be. It focuses on the psychological narrative over the action by design.
@@EpicHelios83 nobody is expecting this game to be god of war most people just want games that are filled with gameplay mechanics to master and just not visuals and walking.
@game-sheriff many games that are popular are more about story over gameplay. Look at games like Life is Strange, Tell-tale's The Walking Dead series, Detroit: Become Human, Heavy Rain, etc. Very little gameplay yet those games get huge critical praise. Sometimes story, visuals, and a great narrative is all that's needed to make a great interactive experience.
@@EpicHelios83 the most popular games on earth are online multiplayer games with no story and maybe a little bit of lore that people don't care about.

Weird music choice for the background of this review, it was a bit distracting.
Panning voices left and right isn't a great portrayal of psychosis. Spec Ops The Line did it a BILLION times better.
Another review based on expectations and not on the game that it is. Comparing it multiple times to God of War.
Yeah, that threw me for a loop. 🤣
If it was a Playstation exclusive like the first one was for awhile. It wouldn't just be OK!
