ALOHA GANG!!! Okay, so I went and watched the music video version of this, and OMG - Soooooooooooo moving and even more impactful. Thank you all for dropping that link.
Yeah, that was a mistake not doing it first :)
Check out their live studio performance of Mara Effect. Also, enjoying your videos, my favorite channel right now:) Might I suggest Mastodon? You may appreciate The Last Baron or The Czar.
Check out mastodon best songs oblivion, crack the Skye, blood and thunder, colony of birchmen, steambreather
You have composerS in the title
New single just dropped called secret garden think you’d really enjoy it
Courtney’s grandmother wanted her to sing a nice song at her funeral without screaming or growling. Her Grandmother died and Courtney wasn’t able to return to Canada for the funeral due to COVID so this song is dedicated to her.
As well as Constance, the grandmother of the videographer that has Alzheimer's
Are you guys guessing or is that true? too lazy to google
@@dariorox1 It is true. Courtney's grandmother passed away and the grandmother of the video director is still alive but struggling due to Alzheimer's.
@@dariorox1 and also the videographer's grandmother is the Constance the song is named after, the real Constance is the woman in the picture that is shown about halfway through the music video
oh ok thanks a lot, very touched
Ohhh good... Constance... I haven't Cried today.. yet.
Yeah feel that
Its just past midnight, so I admit to shedding a few tears today
Yup I'm welling up already
I tear up a little every time too. Especially now. My grandmother died from covid complications on new year's eve.
seriouslyyy lol
Someone who also reacted to the song said it best: 'that's the thing about pain: it demands to be felt'.
A bit of context about the song: this is a tribute to their frontwoman Courtney's grandmother, who passed last year. Due to the lockdowns, Courtney wasn't able to say goodbye. At the same time, their video director Dylan is dealing with his grandmother's illness, who's been suffering from dementia for many years now. Courtney and Dylan wrote the song and video in tandem, as a joint tribute, to tell both of those stories; I'd say they massively succeeded. What a wonderful track.
You're right about this being a "softer" song: so far, this is the only song where Courtney has only done clean vocals. If you want a HUGE deep dive into Spiritbox, there is a full band live session: "The Mara Effect live at Silverside Sound." It's a 16-minute track that showcases a lot of what they have to offer.
By the way, I really enjoy listening to you picking these songs apart. Keep up the great work.
I second the request of the Silverside Sound Live Session. It really is a magnificient piece of musicianship!
The Mara Effect is my favorite of theirs.
constance is also dylans grandmothers name!
Only music video that I have a 100% cry rate on.
Same, 100% of the time
tears and goosebumps....every time. Hate how reactor's always pause the breakdown though. Thats the bit that breaks me every time.
Same
So I guess I'm crying today. Thanks Spiritbox.
No growling in this one because Courtney mentioned her grandmother always wanted to hear her "nice" voice in a song before she passed. So the softer direction of this track was part of Courtney's tribute.
My biggest take away from the song besides tears was the way that the breakdown (for lack of a better word) mirrors the violence it brings to their mind. It becomes so chaotic and dissonant along with that slow trudge down in tempo to symbolize the final moments of her sanity melting together until they grind to a halt. The way that last bit of synth distortion fades into those soft synth chords is truly HAUNTING.
Very well put. I have a few relatives that had alzheimers and watching them forget who you are, their smiles disappear. It's tragic.
Couldn’t describe it better myself💯
“Where Owls Know My Name” by the band Rivers of Nihil.
One of the greatest damn songs🎷
Yeah. The music video is trippy
I play Sax
In a jazz band?
Nope, metal
😂😂😂
@@plantdesigns7889 the sax man looks exactly like this guy who cooks roast chicken at a fast food restaurant near my work
Second that!
@@plantdesigns7889 No spoilers man!
Just got hooked on Spiritbox. They're absolutely deserving of the popularity they're gaining.
My grandmother has recently been in and out of hospitalization for unresponsiveness. She suffers heavily from dementia and has been given a week left. This video hit me like a truck.
I'm so sorry to hear that :(
🥺…
Man I listen to this song a lot, but this is only the 4th time I’ve watched this video because I just can’t get through it without tearing up. I love spiritbox for so many reasons, but their ability to create such an emotional track is incredible, and I’m so excited for them to get seen by so many.
This song is going to make me literally crazy... every single time that i hear it i start crying and start to feel emotional pain and sadness... but at the same time, this song is so perfectly satistying to listen to that i can't stop coming back every now and then.
These guys are killing it! One on my favourite finds of the last few years
The complexity of Metal is finally being validated, been waiting almost 30 years. This song is exceptionally good brings actual emotional reaction out of everyone listening 😈🤘
This song just keeps getting more beautiful the more I learn about it
AH. A fellow Aries! I knew there was a reason I really liked your personality 😆
absolomb by periphery would be super cool! theres a very beautiful orchestral section along with a really cool key change in the piano riiiight at the end end
you really need to hear Sigur Ros. They're from Iceland and have been around since the late 90s, but they have a very uniquely beautiful sound that was a big influence on a lot of "post-rock" bands. This is their song "Svefn-g-englar": ua-cam.com/video/VCVtqwu3_vg/v-deo.html
100 percent more post rock
This is one of my fav songs by them
Meh
Untitled 8 -> if he does not get "chicken skin" at the end...
*clicks video knowing I am going to cry*
The song is about Courtney's grandmother who passed away. "Constance" refers to the video director's grandmother who is living with dementia - Constance's son commented on the video with more details.
Versa Films also directed "Blessed Be" by Spiritbox. I think the video is really well done, although a bit disturbing. The song is great and would be a good stop on your Spiritbox journey :)
Goosebumps on my whole body when they drop into the chorus
Killing it with your vids man
Thank you for finally doing new Spiritbox! You rock Geebz
LEPROUS please. The sky is red, (drum playthrough)
Always love how you pick out little production details that I can appreciate on the next listen. Gives a extra life to songs that I've listened to a bunch already.
Hauntingly beautiful! Great reaction!
I've never been one for reaction videos but you Sir, are different. I love hearing your perspective. Keep up the good work!
Thanks Geebz! Appreciate ya
Yes Spiritbox! I got to know them from your channel and now I am addicted. I really enjoy starting my morning with your reactions! keep it up!
reptile by periphery needs to be on the list
this
yeaahhh
Yes, please. It's a trip!
I don't know if you still read these old video comments, but this was the 1st reaction I watched you do, and you kept me coming back for more! I hope your new projects keep you as interested as this project did, and I wish you nothing but GREAT TIMES AHead! Keep up the GREAT WORK!
An Incredible band. The word you
We’re looking for Is “layering”. Love your channel thanks for posting!
really nice reaction and good musicaal analysis, keep the hardwork man!!!!
I love watching you soak in a piece of music, absorbing everything and feeling through it
I didn’t know of this band prior to the previous video you posted. It was awesome to be first-time reacting along with you haha. Checking out their catalog now. Aloha! 🤙
Rule of nines and holy roller are bangers
Howdy, mate! Cheers from Brazil.
Love your content and, even though we have never met, I can tell that you send good energies to the universe.
Your channel was the first good surprise I got this year, hopefully not the last.
Hey, I hope to see you reacting to Mastodon sometime.
If I were to pick a song it would be Oblivion.
Much love and peace from Brazil, sir.
Take care!
I just love the way you describe music man. Really enjoy your videos. Spirit box is also great
Another solid reaction of one of my favorite new artists of last year.
I'm so glad you got to review Spiritbox.
Easily jumped to one of my favorite bands within the past year.
I really hope you get to do their "The Mara Effect live at Silverside Sound" (all 3 parts of The Mara Effect in one go); it's hands-down their best song overall.
This is one of the 2 Spiritbox songs that I do not really play because of issues. They both make me absolutely bawl. But, they are both SO well done.
What’s the other song
wow the end of the song was a pov metaphor for experience of dying
yup, that's why in the video stuff/people is disappearing as she is fading away and joining her husband in the afterlife.
Oh hey Geebz! Please more Spiritbox! Yellow Jacket (ft Sam Carter from Architects) off the new album is fantastic! ... Honestly anything from Eternal Blue is great.
9:52 very meta reflection during this song XD great video, love this band!!
I cant get through the song without balling. Its so beautiful.
Literally one of my favorite songs by spirit box. Just so full of emotion
I love this song so much
Spiritbox, Novelists and The Contortionist are my favorite Prog Djent Band
Wow you really broke it down lol enjoyed listening
Hi Geebz!! I have a special recommendation. Disease, Injury, Madness from Between the Buried and Me. The second part of the song (around 4:50) starts with some crazy 13/16 riff and contains a nice little trip to another unusual genre later in the song. :) Hope you see this and im looking forward to seeing the reaction video! Love your vids!!!! La la lalala la lalalala
I firggin lost it the first time I heard this song and I had never heard of this band before. I don’t know why but a few days ago while listen to reaction videos I had just let YT roll when Constance came up. I stopped working, rewound the song and gave it my attention. I’m 49 years old and thought a new song from a metal band could never make me cry...it did. The second time around I pulled up the lyrics on Google and again cried. I don’t know why.
amazing song, great review man.
I can't wait for their album! Leprous and The Contortionist next
From what I've read, the nurse in the old photo is "Constance" who is the directors Grandmother. Sadly, she suffers from Dementia.
Great choice geebz!
had to comment again after enjoying the video so much
Those drums in the beginning especially with the snare how crisp and driving it is 🙏🙏🙏
Following your videos now for quite some time and really enjoying your content.
Since you give a composers point of view:
Godspeed You! Black Emperor
- Static
or - Storm
This has to happen!:)
Greetings from Germany.
Hey Geebz! Spiritbox just released an album titled "Eternal Blue," and for closing out the last month of your first year, I'd definitely recommmend giving some of the tracks a listen. Maybe "Sun Killer," "Hurt You," or "Secret Garden."
I ❤️ this song!!!
Make me cry every time
I recommend Tallah - Overconfidence
The drummer is the son of Mike Portnoy
Keep it up brother. Loving the passion
I knew I had seen his name was Max Portnoy but I didn't know if it was a coincidence or not. That's cool to know
Justin recently dropped his one-take vocal for LED, but Overconfidence is fantastic too.
This song hit him home.
I'd love to see you check out "Holy Roller". They recently had a very talented 10 year old girl named Harper back Courtney up on vocals at a UK show after the girl belted that song out out on a UKs Got Talent show.
Thanks for covering Spiritbox again. Check out Twelve Foot Ninja--songs such as Silent Machine, One hand killing or Deluge. Silly band name, but very talented dudes.
You really need to do the song "The Summit" from the new release titled Eternal Blue.
So talk about the content! The message!!
Would love to see you react to the music and composition of:
- Between the Buried and Me - Extremophile Elite (LIVE)
- Ne Obliviscaris - And Plague Flowers the Kaleidoscope (live in Colorado 2016)
I can't handle this song. But I keep coming back and I'm glad I do.
Love your reactions/analysis man 😎 you’ve done stormbending by Devin Townsend and I feel like you will enjoy a lot of other songs he’s done. Hard to pick a single but I’m gonna suggest his song Higher (same record as stormbending) because I think you’ll vibe with it and it’s just an epic piece of music. Cheers man!
I cant even watch you watch this without crying 😢
A sonic confluence is a good term for what you were trying to describe, Courtney's vocal and that wide chord. Her vocals are heavenly and when you read others breakdown regarding the circumstances involved in making this song. It's so hard for me sums up a loss like this. I love Spiritbox. This song was mixed perfectly. You have a really cool way of breaking a song down.
Haven't had a song make me ugly cry since Lightning Crashes - Live
Excellent song from Spiritbox here, well done 👌
You have shown me Jinjier and Spritbox (both on my metal playlist now, thank you!) so im discovering with you! I would love to see you react to Tool - Rosetta Stoned // Johnkew Drum Cover. Rosetta Stoned is a weird song in that at first listen its just Maynard babbling with some random beats until you listen again and again and realize how complex and amazing it is. The drum cover really gives you an appreciation for the complexity of the polyrhythms, tempo changes and complex time signatures of this song.
You look so much like my late father. I really need him right now
he will always be here with you in your heart my friend, watching and guiding you through everything you do from within. Trust your heart and you will be in tandem with your late father bless his soul.
much love
Who would have guessed SPIRITBOX would deliver the most emotional heartbreaking song this year? So lush and atmospheric. Like a 90's ballad but with modern elements. I love songs that are more about colors and this is definitely about colors. From airy early morning orange hue of the sun trying to break through the clouds at the beginning and then slowly the clouds start swirling into a dark gray mass towards the end and then.., a gentle and warm red hue of the setting sun briefly breaking through the clouds again. Amazing production on this song.
music is an explosion of emotion the composer is who we can thank
that's why we say "feel the music"
Love the channel,Tool army member here. Appreciate your perspective on so many great bands including karnivool, definetly keep exploiting them.
I'd like to request you check out Scale the Summit. A song called Blue Sun,thanks
Awsome ability to create tension in parts of the song
Also Rivers of Nihil, Where Owls Know My Name
Done already
The Contortionist - Language
Nice! spiritbox!
mara effect at silverside studio! awesome musical production by these guys, youll love the instrumentation
You should check out the back story behind this song. There's a lot to unpack and you'll understand why it's so powerful and meaningful for Courtney
You should absolutely check out Haken (cockroach King will probably be their most recommended song, but Invasion is amazing too) and septicflesh enemy of truth.
This song has some of the best vocal melodies/cadence I've ever heard.
More Spiritbox pls! Old ones would be nice!
Lost my uncle to that.. Emotional this...
Gotta say my friend; sure it comes with maturity, but you're attentiveness, and respect to the music compared to the other people doing these types of videos is on another level.
Or in other words, the quiet reaction makes all the difference.
👌 ❤ 🤘
React to Blessed Be or Trust Fall by Spiritbox. I do really like both
Hi there Mr. Geebz!
I found your interpretation and reactions very accurate and close to mine. Thank you a lot for this sharing and good look in future!
I'd like to introduce a band which rhythmically goes beyond some Meshuggah stuff with a very recognizible melodic manner
Will you please decompose
VILDHJARTA band
from Masstaden LP, preferably in instrumental, so you will touch it to the core!
Thank you!
Song still hits me like a truck even over a year later... Geez.
I'm gonna nominate this song for a lyrical breakdown. That way we can breakdown lyrically as we breakdown emotionally.
Spiritbox - The Mara Effect (live at Siverside Sound)
This one is a MUST.
This song made me very cathartic. I didn't even watch it . There is soo much going on in the lyrics and music that its a bit overwhelming for me. I can hear her pain and approach to her art in the vocals.
Perennial next ;)
my uncle and grandmother had Alzheimer's and i cry like a baby everytime i hear this song..i love spiritbox
At first I didn't like this song, but the more I listen to it, the more I feel it and love it.
Has anyone mentioned Dance Gavin Dance yet? If no one hasn't can we do Inspire the liars or Man of the year?
Yes!
You would really enjoy Spirit Box. The Mara effect parts 1-3 live at silver sound studios.
Interesting like that last riff is totally based on gradative losses. First it's a loss on bar (4/4 >> 4/4 to 4/4 >> 3/4), after loss high frequencies (tuned one octave lower) and in the end loss tempo turnig down from 115 bpm to 95 bpm.
Really beatiful way to show how cruel is Alzheimer's Disease.
