In this episode of #TheDailyDoug, I'm listening to Cockroach King by Haken. This is my first time ever listening to music by this band, and I was completely entertained and engrossed! Thanks to all the folks who have suggested this band for the channel.

Thanks for covering our song, Doug! You nailed the lyrical interpretation and seem to really get what we tried to do musically! All the best, Ross (Haken Vocalist)
Keep going guys!! Hope you can make it back to the states when we get control over this virus.
Hope you guys stay in health 🔥🔥🔥
discovering Haken and Leprous is what got me through 2020!
@@jedinxf7 Big same, their music pretty much saved my life last year, and they have become my favourite prog band.
So grateful that I got to see you guys before COVID shut the world down back in March '20 with Devy in Charlotte. You guys put on an INCREDIBLE show, and I became an instant and permanent fan. Hope to see you stateside again sometime soon!
I shared your reaction vid with Ross (Haken vocalist), he said: "The best reaction a musician can hope for... And he immediately nailed the meaning behind the lyrics too".
Wow that's great!
... and (prophetically), in 23 July 2019, they too got a matching "especimen" in office... Yikes!
His lyrics are well understood, your reaction is just juvenile. Sorry. Please stick to the music and you'll be fine.
@Richard Thresh I was talking with Doug and he would like to do Julia by Troika on the channel this week. Doug also just did the entire Mountain album by Haken for his Patreon. I know Ross also has his solo album recently released. So, I was wondering if Ross might be interested in an interview with Doug. Doug said he would be interested. I know you shared this video with Ross before, what social media platform did you use? Or maybe you might pass along the idea.
@@Arrow2theACL ... happy to pass on the idea
Doug, I'll bet you would LOVE "Falling Back to Earth" by these guys. The last 6 minutes of it are...transcendent. I don't know what other word to use for it. And the album "Visions", a thematically unified composition, is simply a masterpiece.
listen to this man
PLEASE
Seconded
I have a snippet of "falling back to Earth" as my ringtone on my phone. Easily one of their best songs... EVER!!!
@@moose6666 I looped this line from Crystallised as my ringtone. ua-cam.com/video/DjaE3w8j6vY/v-deo.html
Your channel has become a daily stop for me. Seriously, dude. Your analysis is incredible music content. Happy to see you tackle some Haken. Highly recommend checking out their Visions concept album. Hard to explain, but they feel like a more "modern" Dream Theater. Keep kicking ass and I'll keep on binging these. 🤘😁
Seconded, their Visions album is my favourite of all! Many people will disagree though. But that is the beauty of music, it is always subjective!
Essentially, in the early part of their career, they were aping DT. Visions was the record where they started finding their own sound and voice, and I was so thrilled when they did.
Not busting on them, though. The fact that they were even CAPABLE of "aping" DT is an impressive feat all its own.
Haken is absolutely Dream Theater 2 as far as I'm concerned. Haken has their own feel don't get me wrong but I think they deserve the progressive metal crown whenever DT feels like passing it along.
@@VagueLuminary check out Bad Salad. They're even more Dream Theater 2 than Haken. So less original, but still well-written and absolutely face-melting
Oh, small world.
Hoping this band will become a regular on the channel! Their recent albums are a lot heavier so take that how you will. For a second listen I would recommend either another song from The Mountain (Atlas Stone or Falling Back to Earth) or pretty much any song from Aquarius.
EDIT: I completely forgot about Crystallised, if you want a really long song, that's my favorite.
I long for the day that someone react to "Celestial Elixir" or "Visions", but they're such long songs that i don't think anyone else but Doug would do it. So let's hope he does :)
Messiah Complex is equally dope
@@TheRubeoHagrid I'll take your word for it. I haven't heard anything past "The Montain" yet. But i will soon fix this mistake :)
Atlas Stone, yes please!
React to Visions, Atlas Stone, Crystallised, Falling back to the earth, The Arquitect, Pareidolia, Carousel, Prostetic, Messiah Complex.
Celestial Elixir is a must listen suite
Agree
Definitely
Yes. The entire Aquarius album is perfect!
Try a long song from them called "Crystallised". It´s dope!
Yes!
Yes yes yes!!!
Indeed it is!
A thousand times this!
I was about to comment this
Haken is, in my opinion, the modern torchbearer for the style of prog metal Dream Theater pioneered at their (imo) peak (Scenes From a Memory, Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence).
"Cockroach King" is probably their most unique song, though. They don't have anything quite as altogether whimsical as this one, and their later stuff tends to be heavier.
"Crystallised" would be my next recommendation since you liked "Cockroach King". It has some of the same whimsy in the latter half of the song (though it's an 18min epic), and is a terrific song all around.
Aside from that, others have made great recommendations as well.
I would argue that a lot of songs off of Aquarius have a load of whimsy, but I otherwise agree
React to Visions, Atlas Stone, Crystallised, Falling back to the earth, The Arquitect, Pareidolia, Carousel, Prostetic, Messiah Complex.
I love crystallised. Doug will have to guess which drums Mike Portnoy played at the song....
Plz react to Crystallised by Haken next time. It's one of their best composition ever. Epic and adventurous.
Agreed. Amazing piece of music.
Agreed
I’m hearing a strong Gentle Giant influence (a good thing). There’s a particular British eccentricity to this, which I adore. First listen for me, and I’m impressed.
Yeah the Gentle Giant is really strong on this. Not something they do often though so maybe not the most representative first listen haha.
Yea this song is an ode to Gentle Giant
"Crystallized" is another of their very heavily Gentle-Giant-inspired pieces.
@@relinquishh yes, no question of the Gentle Giant influence. I hear a bit of King Crimson here and there too. Like Doug said, "I think I'm a fan ya'll"! 😁
I never heard Haken before, but my first reaction was: Gentle Giant in modern clothes. I like it!
Haken musts in the future include Pareidolia or Atlas Stone (also from The Mountain), The Architect or 1985 from Affinity, Puzzle Box, Veil, or Nil By Mouth from Vector, Carousel or Messiah Complex from Virus, or the full albums of Visions or Aquarius as their first two albums were huge concept albums. Aquarius is absolutely bonkers. The amount of crazy concepts they crammed into that album is astonishing for a DEBUT ALBUM. At such a high level of musicianship as well.
Missing crystallized in those recommendations
Aquarius is my favorite album of theirs ❤️
@@Meister_Dwight it's so much fun!
Dude, Crystallized!! And from the newer music I think he would very much enjoy Carousel
Yes to this.
Ayreon - The Human Equation album is a must for long episodes.
God I love ayreon glad to see someone mention it
Crystallized by Haken as well 🤯🤯
Oh man, can't wait. You really gotta hear Puzzle Box after this!
One of the 3 best prog bands from the last decade along with thank you scientist and bent knee. Definitely hoping to see more of them in the future.
You misspelled Leprous.
@@TwoandaHater leprous are good, but not quite as good as these 3.
@@keenanbartlome8153 I would put Leprous WAAAAAY above Bent Knee (I saw them both with Haken), but to each their own.
The answer is actually Moron Police.
Thank you scientist! Thats a warm recommendation.
Haken's Crystallised is a perfect next song for you, I think it's got the tastiest vocal harmonies and layering outta their entire discography, and it's a trip back to 70s prog
Totally agree....it's their best song!
At the end of the song, that was the biggest smile I've seen on the channel. Glad you enjoyed it, and after recommending Haken for months all I can say is I TOLD YOU SO! ;) hahaha
Queen, Gentle Giant and King Crimson (particularly ‘80-00s stuff you haven’t heard yet) mashed together. I was so excited when I saw you were doing this song.
Haken's recent album, Virus, is bascially a sequel to "The Cockaroach King" - sort of like how Dream Theater did "Metropolis Part 2".
Vector as well, i think
@@marcojacobsson1898 True. However, when I listen to Virus, I recognize riffs from Cockroach King - does Vector do that? It might - I have to admit, I don't really like Vector all that much, whereas I loved Virus right from the start. So I may have missed them quoting riffs from Cockroach King in Vector.
@@geoffglenister5535 as far as i know, Vector and Virus tell both the story of the Cockroach King; musically i didnt' recognize riffs or themes from the original song in Vector as well...
There are some tidbits of Cockroach King in Nil by Mouth
I cannot wait for the inevitable day that you listen to Ayreon - The Human Equation
Absolutely...Ayreon's masterpiece...just do it Doug.
Yes!
Please do it! It is auch an epic piece!
Yep! A perfect proggy folly double album.
This is great. So much Crim and Giant influence. I'll be seeking out more of this band. Thanks, Doug and those who suggested it.
If you like the whimsical and theatrical elements, head to their first two albums. This particular track is from their 3rd album, which is a great mid-point. If you liked the heavier, more riff-based aspects, head to their 4th and 5th albums. But all of them are great - enjoy the ride friend!
@@Jaymzmiller Alsp the EP is a absolute must. Crystalised is amazing.
I've been waiting to see you hear Haken for months. SO glad you finally got into them. The whole rest of the album is utterly perfect. Their last two albums have become quite dark and heavy, but I think that is a phase they will move on from. They seem to be evolving, which is really exciting to see in an artist. Good stuff, Doug, keep up the fun videos!
I hope they do. I really like virus but it got a bit repetitive to me- obviously great musicianship and call backs to other albums/songs but I love their eclectic side.
@@ckokomo808 Same feeling. Loved the changes, but want to hear more eclectic content, too.
Both Dream Theater and Haken have gone quite djenty and modern metal. The nostalgia, humor and playfulness of the early albums are much missed
Doug reacted to the entire album The Mountain accessible via his Patreon. He enjoyed the entire album, but you can tell he really enjoyed Because It's There and As Death Embraces on an emotional level.
Doug, I think u will enjoy listening to the band Leprous, the song "The sky is red" is excelent. The singers voice is amazing! And so is the drummer. They have many many great songs.
Agree. The Sky Is Red is a masterpiece, and it takes a MOST unexpected turn towards the second half.
oh yeah
Haken are great! I'd recommend 1985 as a reaction. Not their best song but a really cool thing to react to. Heavily influenced by 80s synth composer Vince Dicola. Hopefully your Patrons reinforce this.
Mh, I'm not sure that's a good pick after Cockroach King. Both are quite different from almost everything else they've done.
Don't get me wrong, I love both songs, but if Cockroach King is the first Haken song you hear, and 1985 the second, you're a bit lost about how they sound IMO.
@@exscape Weird take. So we should avoid sharing stand out masterpieces by artists because they're different than what they usually put out? If it earns the band a new fan, it did it's job. I certainly didn't get my ex wife (an indie music fan) into Dream Theater in 2002 with things like Metropolis pt 1 or Dance of Eternity. I did it with things like Misunderstood and Space Dye Vest on a mixed CD. And she slowly got hardcore into them. I introduced her with elements she was familiar with and could branch out from. Both Cockroach King and 1985 are things Doug seems to enjoy and are fine things to start with.
The whole album is a masterpiece and my favorite by Haken. It’s a very good song and I like the style and direction they went for in that concept album.
Very Rush like in some passages on the song.
I've been waiting for this for so long. So excited!
Richard Henshall (a member of Haken) put out a solo record a couple of years ago called "The Cocoon". Amazingly complex stuff. Anything from that album is worth hearing, but the title track and "Silken Chains" are favorites.
Amazing album
Thanks for reminding me about that one, it's time for another listen.
YES! and dont forget Lunar Room
this is the first of your videos i am watching and instantly subscribed to your channel. the depth of your analysis is outstanding and i love listening to you. Keep it up!
This song dropped me in a hole I still can't climb out of, they all have virtuosic skill in their respective element, their styles blend together so beautifully I just can't stop. #1 Favourite band At the moment. I'm just glad you loved it.
Thanks Doug, I hadn't heard these guys before, thank you!
Watching your videos is pretty much the only time I feel musical and happy at the same time... God! So so good!
I'm really pleased to see you reacting to Haken, I hope it becomes a constant band in your reacts, they have a ton of great songs. Kind regards!
Wonderful song - thank you for featuring it!
Wow, thanks Doug!!! Another band i never listened to before but will get into.
Glad you went with this as your first listen. Can't wait to hear this several times already. Curious what direction you take the reaction. I could delve into the muscitianship, the technical stuff, influences, quirkiness and even the powerful lyrics.
I didn't do as much theory in this one...the flow of the piece, lyrics, and spunk are what captured my fascination in the moment.
@@Doug.Helvering Excelent. When you grab the Theory guy another way, it's a good one. Glad you liked it. You would love Crystalized emotionally powerful and childish fun. But Celestial Elixir (Their debute concept album) is just as fun. Visions is fun with a deep story. Anything from The Mountain for Gentle Giant and King Crimson or Yes fans. Affinity goes a bit deeper into lyrical interpretation and for those who want a heavier sound Vector and Virus go together in much heavier concept peice.
For anyone interested. Doug reacted to the entire album The Mountain accessible via his Patreon. It is well worth a few dollars for the hour and 45 minute reaction if you have the means.
Right there with you, Doug. First time hearing them, and I am all in!
You should really do their song "Visions", it'll fit great on your friday extended reactions!
Visions is my favourite song from Haken!
Visions is up there with Octavarium as the greatest compositions of all time
@@themountain3461 I haven’t heard Visions at all (new to Haken at the moment but a big Dream Theater fan.) but looking at the song length, I can already tell it’s Haken’s Octavarium
@@Beefy3240 absolutely. They're just like Dream Theater in that the epics are the best songs. Visions, Celestial Elixir and Crystallised are the cream of the crop
Ohh, I suggested this one before so obviously very excited to see this.
So glad Doug picked up on the Gentle Giant influence, somethi g I hear every time I listen to this! You totally got it, thanks for your insight.
I have waited so long for Haken! Yes!
Haken is so fucking good. Their earlier stuff is my favorite Aquarius and visions are my stand outs but the new stuff is still great
Celestial Elixir next please! you're gonna dig in to it
Haken is without a doubt the greatest prog metal band in my opinion after the gods themselves, Dream Theater.
I prefer Haken by a lot these days.
Leprous and Pain of Salvation are more in my favour.
@@rolandweigert5169 same, these three are more interesting to me that Dream Theater. And Pain of Salvation isn't much younger than Dream Theater, but are way more adventurous now than DT.
JA! you hear Spiral Architect.....????
Opeth, DT, Tool, and then Haken for me. Still, top 5 is nothing to sneeze at.
Haken are an absolutely brilliant band , more coverage is needed for their genius to be heard.
It's not often I hear something that truly sounds unique. I gotta check out more!
You're in for a ride.
thank you doug... you rock!!! and this is one of my fav songs to show off my studio.. any time you want a beer.. just let me know!
Haken is basically Dream Theater with more imagination
There’s no context to
Back that up but you are entitled to your opinion and music and what is created at a point in time, is subjective after all.
I thoroughly enjoyed this. I've been remiss in taking time to listen to much of Haken. Huge fun! 😎👍
Doug you have a great ear and are talented at providing analysis, but one thing I never see in the comments is an appreciation for how quickly you are able to parse the meaning of lyrics. It's a whole other skill, one that I don't have at all so you've really helped me to better understand songs that I've already loved for years
My favourite song from Haken, love it so much and so glad you do too !
Their last album Virus (released last year, no joke...) is great.
Thanks for your interpretation, sounds great, I didn't know the lyrics.
Cheers from France !
I love to see this reaction. This is absolutely my kind of shit and to see you really enjoying it and getting it makes me happy.
Cristalized
PLEASE
Yes !
Got some Gentle Giant in there. Got some King Crimson with the whole tone stuff. First time hearing the band!
Their first album, Aquarius, is a concept album, and deserving of the Scenes From a Memory treatment. Would love to watch you hear the whole thing in one sit. Visions as well. I love this band.
Aquarius is so damn underrated in the Haken fanbase these days :(
Don’t forget Affinity too
All of their albums are conceptual pieces, some more straight tales than others. I'd like to see him analyze Affinity lyrics as that album is the most human-philosophical of them all.
Well the Mountain was voted on by his Patreon, so he did a full album listen to it. It was still worth the listen though.
@@Arrow2theACL wait, he reacted to The Mountain in its entirety and didn't upload the video?
I freaking love this channel.
Adding Haken to my playlist right now!!!
What is done is done, but you are missing by not checking out the full studio version
Check the reference video in the description, it’s the full version.
My bad, I didn't even realize that in the band's official channel they only have the video edit
I found this full version on another channel with less than 1000 views.
@@Doug.Helvering I saw that. cool that it looks like they put the video from the short version onto the long version. im assuming they cut away from the video during the parts not in the edit.
also, while I have you, i cannot recommend thank you scientist enough. they are quirky and jazzy, and some of the best musicians on the planet. Highly recommend the song blood on the radio from them.
Doug, I appreciate your immaculate ear and musical insights!
Honestly blown away that you can just grab the keys and chords out of a first listen like that. Adds a lot to a reaction channel.
Haken is one of my favourite bands (if not THE top band), and I honestly hope you just do every song by them haha!
But if I could recommend a few:
Streams and Aquarium from Aquarius (or any song from that album.. or the whole thing! It would be perfect for an extended play lounge episode)
1985 from Affinity
Waiting patiently for Aquarius to get on the extended play lounge on Patreon much like The Mountain was.
YEAH YEAH DOUG! Thank you for trying HAKEN! You will definitely love them for sure!!! \m/
I agree with a lot of people requesting the song Crystallised by Haken. It's from their 2014 EP Restoration, which is often overlooked because it's not in the "album" sections on Spotify. Their albums The Mountain and Affinity (and EP Restoration) are top-tier 10/10 music for me. The rest of their output is still 9,5/10. They're so creative.
If you are interested. Doug reacted to the entire album The Mountain accessible via his Patreon. It is well worth a few dollars for the hour and 45 minute reaction if you have the means.
Man!! I just saw you uploaded this video, metropolis pt 2, and a snarky puppy reaction!
Well there goes me being productive tonight
I just heard this for the first time. What a hoot. Great music. I thoroughly enjoyed that.
I had a coworker who was also into prog metal and I remember when he told me about Haken! He also told me about this group called Native Construct who have a similar vibe. As far as I can tell they only ever did the one album (Quiet World) but it is phenomenal!! And I'm just seeing you did a reaction to Mute 5 months ago so I'm going to watch that now!
I didn't heard this group before and it really reminded me the great Gentle Giant which is, by the way, a compliment. Thanks Doug and well donne Haken.
Dude i am so happy thank you man. Thank you very much 🤩🤩🤩🤩
I'm commented on this 1,000,000 times and all the widespread to this band.So thankful. Can't wait. This song is a nice intro to a new listener. Even Notify that there's no double kick as much. :)
Doug they really open out with what they do, I reckon you would love the following tracks for their unique and distinct style - visions the track, falling back to earth, celestial elixir, carousel, puzzle box, the whole of the messiah complex parts 1 to 5 altogether (12 minutes) if you want something different you could try paradoleia, darkest light or eternal rain. Haken are the best prog coming out of the UK at the moment IMO.
Doug reacted to the entire album The Mountain and he enjoyed it. He was fascinated with Paradoleia and Death Embraces, but really thoroughly enjoyed the entire album.
So happy you finally gave Haken a chance. You definitely have to keep reacting to their songs, if you liked Cockroack King I'm sure you'll like their other songs as well. The whole Mountain album is a masterpiece (please react to Atlas Stone), and also I'd recommend their prior albums (Aquarius and Visions).
Doug reacted to the entire album The Mountain accessible via his Patreon. It is well worth a few dollars for the hour and a half reaction if you have the means.
@@Arrow2theACL Nice to know, I'll check it out!
Loved your enthusiasm for the song and also admire your bravery for speaking on politics despite the possibility of turning some fans away. I have fallen down the Haken rabbit hole and I’m blown away. They have some great stuff and I’m sure we’ll see more on this channel given your reaction.
Watch the first episode of this vlog. It was originally planned as a vlog on political and social issues.
you'll totally dig Haken Doug! The album "The mountain" is your go to, it's a very big and open sounding album. but I'd suggest Crystallised next, which is from their 'restoration' EP, a true prog epic if you will, lots of interesting stuff.
Crystallised is amazing.
Well he did Crystalised and he loved it. Then he did an extended play listen of the entire Mountain album for Patreon yesterday.
That was great! I'm grateful to have experienced that and that I'll check-out their other works. Also, I'm so glad you said that, because I, too, was thinking the same thing: that the Cockroach King has a red comb-over! While he does have his fans, up here, north of your border, a lot of us were really wondering what was going on (and, also, quite worried.) Finally, you, really, do need to check-out Bang On A Can All-Star's version of Conlon Nancarrow's Study 3a. It's Zappa-esque in its musical rigour. Best! J
I'm only occasionally listening to Haken and this song reminds me to do so more often. Great choice!
This song is still stuck in my head from yesterday, it's a good thing
And the puppets are so very nicely representing each of the members in the band, you have no idea! 🥰🎶👍
I already knew the song, but not the video clip. I enjoyed knowing it with Doug's react!
It's time for Crystallised!
This was very good. Thank you recommenders.
Have you heard of Haken before this?
@@Arrow2theACL Yes?
One of my favourite bands of all time. Falling back to earth, visions, The Point of no Return, and crystalized are all great tracks from their older (pre affinity) sound. Post affinity, Veil, and The Architect, are two of my favs
I've loved this song for years and never paid this much attention to the lyrics!
I watch this channel every dinner. hahah amazing! Haken released two albuns (Vector and Virus) that works like a preview story of Coackroach King. Great albuns. But, I think you must listen to Affinity album :)
this is the first time I noticed that right when he says "the hunter snares its prey", drummer hits the snare. hahaha I love these guys.
and yes, the first time I heard the song I couldn't think of anything but cheetolini. down to his cockroach-hued hair.
Loved the Fusion section out of left field. Vocal textures are awesome.
Another band new to me whom I will have to look deeper into. I heard this and thought of Gentle Giant too.
I saw Them open for Devin Townsend right before the pandemic broke out, along with the Contortionist. Politics is not my thing But I have been enjoying the channel.
Me too. Never heard them before. Became a fan that night!
I saw them on that tour as well, Cockroach King was just about the weirdest thing anyone played that night but I'll be damned if it wasn't catchy in a weird musical theater way.
The last concert I experienced before Covid hit was in november 2019. Devin Townsend with Haken as support act. Diego Tejeda was also part of Devin's ensemble during this tour. It was the best or at least one of the best concerts that i attended. I got very lucky then, and of course for the past vew days watching your channel. First Devin and now this! The look on your face watching those muppets is priceless. Enjoy your deep dive into Haken.
So when i found Haken here i stay here. I love this band.
Man I'm so excited you're reacting to Haken. They have sooo much great music in their opus, each song is a progressive gem. You should check out some more! Maybe next Celestial Elixir? or Darkest light?
Seeing that you’ve found shaken excites me!
Cheers from Greece, lots of love to New Jersey and yourself!!! The one reactor and analyst we love!!! Keep thriving!!! If you liked Haken maybe try "Visions"!!!
This song has such a profound effect on people when they first listen to it. Its amazing.
It is a great pleasure to listen to your analysis. I ran into Haken recently, but the album The Mountain blew my mind, especially the two bonus tracks. I would be happy (and certainly many others too), if you would pick up more songs from Haken. Gladly Falling Back To Earth and especially with chord analyzes, because what Haken does musically goes IMHO far beyond the normal horizon of bands like Dream Theater. Incredible musicians. Thanks for your great channel. Always a pleasure and all the best from Berlin.
If you are interested. Doug reacted to the entire album The Mountain accessible via his Patreon. It is well worth a few dollars for the hour and 45 minute reaction if you have the means. Unfortunately he did not do the bonus tracks, but IMO The Path Unbeaten would have made a great ending to the album as it stands.
Such a great choice! Go for Crystallized also by Haken!
This reaction did not disappoint! Been looking forward to this video for a while. Hands down my favorite band discovery of the last 10 years of music. Now that they've got your attention, I'd jump on board with several others and suggest Celestial Elixir next for a single song (definitely has a bit of quirk and whimsy like this, and is one of my favorite songs to play). Doing all of Aquarius or the Mountain would be great for EPL. The Mountain stands out with that heavy Gentle Giant influence, though it's altogether a bit different feel from this song alone.
Looks like we got our wish of a EPL of The Mountain
@@Arrow2theACL I stayed up way too late watching it, but it was worth it!
That was awesome.. haha.. loved it... Doug, can ya hear the Zappa influence? Gentle Giant?
Thank you once again for making my day Doug!! I will now and forever have your professional opinion to back me up that metal is NOT JUST NOISE. I am 53 years old and a die hard metal head. I have been able to convert my sweet little wife to metal music over the years lol. Your professional opinion and the time that you devote to these songs makes my day. You rock Doug !!
Amazing band, I dig your music knowledge and ear.
great channel Doug!!!i would like some Gentle Giant please!
Hey Doug - first time watching your content. Massive Haken fan.
Your lyric interpretation was amazing! Cockroach King is actually about a fictional character, Dr Rex. They have 2 albums out, Vector and Virus which tells the story of Dr rex and the albums are a prequel and sequel, respectively. They tell the story of what I interpret as Dr Rex experimenting on mental patients, in an attempt to transfer consciousness into a cockroach and vice versa, with some kind of electro shock therapy and viral infection. He gains notoriety for this in the public eye until he ends up being cornered a grand crescendo and falls to his ultimate demise after sacrificing his daughter, Marigold (Another reference to King Midas), and all throughout the album thee leitmotifs of Vector are in Virus, there are very clear leitmotifs of Cockroach king itself in later tracks of Virus too. I love Haken, the lyrics are so engaging and intriguing!
I'd love for you to listen to the 2 albums and take in the lyrics for the whole 'Cockroach King' story.
The arrangement makes me think of dream theater. The song goes in many directions you don't expect it to go.
Brilliant analysis! You should check out The Architect, Host or Puzzle Box are a few faves...
Man I love Haken. Seen them twice live and they sound awesome.
They toured with Devin Townsend and their keyboard player, Diego Tejeida jumped to Devin's band too for the gig.
They are really great guys as well. Downed some beers with the singer and guitarist while listening the band Between the buried and me.
