Check out The Charismatic Voice video when they put a camera in Will Ramos's (lead singer for Lorna Shore) throat and see how the muscles and vocal folds function when he is screaming.
Haha going down the extreme vocals rabbithole:) Two tips here: Watch Lorna Shore - To the Hellfire one take to see what Will Ramos can do. Then watch Elizabeth Zaroff, a trained opera singer, put a camera down Will's throat while he does different harsh vocal techniques on her channel, The Charismatic Voice.

She can flip between Scream to clean and then Scream again within 3 words with no faults. Cheers, from Montréal, Canada
You should definitely check out Pisces by the Band Jinjer. Tatyana's shouting technique is bar none other. Angelic clean vocals and a scream you wouldn't believe came from her.
I love Spiritbox, the whole band is just great. Another band which you'd love is Jinjer. I see people have said to listen to Pisces and Perennial, I'd probably say Perennial. While Pisces is great for a shock for the first time someone sees a woman scream you've already seen it. Perennial from Wacken is amazing because it's their last song and before the song she's a little out of breath then she sings the song and crushes it and after she talks and she sounds like she just ran a race. That shows breath control. She could still be exhausted but still sing a song as demanding as Perennial and sing it perfectly.
Yeah I'm going to join in hopes of the beginning of your Jinjer rabbit hole. I was there for weeks, they are a incredible band! And her screaming will blow your mind. I would love to go on that ride again with ya.
Tatiana and Jinjer Alissa and Arch Enemy Will Ramos and Lorna Shore 3 of my top vocalists 2023. If we talk growl and cleans. Next level in my book when we talk metal.
IMO, the best female vocalist currently in terms of dark/light vocals is Tatiana Shmayluk from Jinjer. There is a live session of their song Pisces on YT, which is simply mindblowing. As for learning the proper technique for harsh vocals, why not just interview some of the vocalists? The Charismatic Voice has interviewed quite a few metal vocalists, and those have always been fascinating watches.
@@bleachdragon88 Seven Spires is so criminally underrated, remember when they came out with their debut album they were playing with Amaranthe (atleast iirc im pretty sure thats who it was) and even now that album is so fucking good, and their newer album is even better, but if you like them im definitely give Sascha Paeth's Masters of Ceremony a listen along with Dark Sarah.
You could watch Elizabeth (charismatic voice) an opera singer takes a metal screamer to get a camera down his throat to see what's happening when he screams, I think you would enjoy
My favorite screamer style vocalist is actually a youtuber and harsh vocals coach named Justin Bonitz. He has amazing range and mastery of pretty much all screaming styles and techniques. He is also extremely vocally athletic, like mind blowingly so. His band Tallah is doing really well right now and he does one take vocal videos for all their songs. They write very theatrical concept albums that normally tell a story of someone falling deep into madness because of their circumstances and decisions. Justin embodies these characters through his wide arsenal of screaming styles. He also says he takes inspiration from Disney villains. Check out his one take of "Red Light" by Tallah to see the final mental break from the first album. But any of them are good for a reaction. btw He's done vocal teaching collab videos with other coaches too. Might be a fun video or two. His person channel is called Hungry Lights I think.
Oh hi. Metal vocalist, here, learning backwards: started with screams, and now learning to sing. The biggest thing I wanted to impress is that YES, almost all tonality comes down to mouth shape when you're screaming. The base function, whether fry or false chord, are basically and foundationally the same. Nothing changes about how you do it. It is PURELY in how you shift apparatus above whatever folds you're using that changes EVERYTHING.
I second the other comments suggesting you check out her one-take performance of "Circle with Me". In that song you will see here transition back in forth between styles in the same phrase, sometimes even transitioning back and forth in the same word. I also second comments suggesting you look into Jinjer, specifically "Pisces" studio one take or "Perennial" live at Waken music festival.
Something interesting to watch in the Circle With Me one take that everyone is recommending is to see how dramatic the shift is in her posture between singing and screaming because you can see more of her torso.
Is that a Schecter C-1 classic in see thru blue flamed maple top, with a tree of life inlay you have in the background, if so, I have the exact same one! Love it! Great reaction too, subscribed! Courtney/Spiritbox are amazing
Lauren Hart from Once Human has some amazing transitions in some of their songs ie. Eye of Chaos. She has also filmed a vlog where she has her vocal chords recorded by camera whilst trying different vocal techniques. Utterly fascinating to actually see the difference between regular singing and screaming.
Courtney LaPlante, is imho the best female metal vocalist of our time. They occasionally live stream and her work process is inspiring. How she comes up with the lyrics and arrangements that fits into the instrumental so well is genius level.
I love how hilarious y'all are, those bloopers in the end 😂 Anyway, Spiritbox's singer is a good example for false chord screams, if you wanna check out a woman doing high fry screams insanely well (as well as decent false chords/gutterals) alongside clean vocals - so the vocalist not only transitions smoothly from clean to harsh vocals, but also does quick transitions between the two most common harsh vocal techniques, between high and low, i recommend Vintersea with their Slay at Home live one take.
Yeah as others have said please check out the the Circle with Me one take as well its on another level again. Also nice TOD10N on the wall there I missed out on getting one when there was stock in Aus currently have one on back order and can not wait!
Screaming / growls are weird. You ask people that do it and most of the time they are self taught. Singers like Tatiana from Jinjer just walk out in the middle of nowhere and start practicing where they wont be heard. Then you see what they can do and their like "i don't have issues with my throat / vocal cords from screaming so much".
Cristina, definitely check out The Charismatic Voice with Elizabeth, she's WAY down the rabbit hole and I'm sure she'd be happy to speak with you about your journey. She has a very similar background from what I can tell as an Opera singer and she's got a MASSIVE following that's allowed her to speak to and spend time with many vocalists in this space. Cheers! Fun channel, excited to see what you might try to review next. Consider more Jinjer like: "I Speak Astronomy". Another awesome vocalists you might enjoy is Lacuna Coil (Christina Scabbia): "Heaven's a Lie" or "Swamped". A male voice to check out is Alex Terrible in Slaughter to Prevail in songs like: "Baba Yaga" or "Demolisher". 🤘 Oh damn, had to edit to ad a new awesome band I really want people to see, they're called Sicksense and their track: "Feed Them to the Wolves" is wicked! Vicky and Rob kill it on vocals 🤘
Is always great to see people really appreciate the metal scream/growl, understanding that is a difficult technick. I'm going to join to the recomendation to react to jinjer. There is always a order haha, pisces and then perennial live in wacken!
There are two recognised techniques for screams; Using the false chord - muscle flaps that sit above your vocal folds, by rattling them you can make a deeper sound. You can make a similar sound by sighing heavily, or clearing your throat. Then there's fry screams - taking a note, slowing it down to pops and crackles and then amplifying that sound with the diaphagm. The pops and crackles will be 1 octave lower than the note and is much more delicate work imo. This is typically used in tandem with singing to create a fuller sound as the fry sits on top of the original note. For a good example look at Disturbed. Everything after the initial sound is creates is resonance manipulation - in this video you see her do that by lowering her larynx to create more space for resonance, tongue position and mouth shape. You generally dont want to involve your vocal chords when doing false chords, so to get different pitches you start with a 'mid' scream and then change mouth shape tongue position to make it deeper or higher. Wider mouth with tongue down will make a higher sound, tongue to roof of mouth and pursed lips creates a deeper sound. You can test this relatively safely by whispering whilst changing your mouth shape.
The Charismatic Voice did a scope of Will from Lorna Shore while he was doing some harsh vocals. Explains so much on how he makes the sounds he does. Imagine it’s similar. Well worth the watch for deeper explanation.
Okay so watching this I thought I'd comment, even tho I'm pretty nervous to haha. So Courtney and I have similar screaming technique, hers is a lot more controlled since for 20 so years I've been doing this I've never been able to afford singing lessons, however, apologies for that tangent. But what I do is longate my mouth and face to make it darker which helps me do whatever inside. But the difference between what you did the "Oah" that is the access of the false cords where I believe just like myself Courtney is using a try technique. The reason I do that is because unlike using false cords, I hurt myself more accessing that rather than just darkening my scream using a vocal fry technique, I can also do this to deepen my scream like Courtney did toward the end of the song.
Check out Chris Liepe's channel for the brief tutorial he just did with Will Ramos of Lorna Shore. You want to see some impressive harsh vocals, watch Will's one take of To the Hellfire on his own UA-cam channel. He's one of the best in the business and one of the most impressively diverse in terms of using many different techniques to get many different sounds. Tatianna from Jinjer is also amazing. Check out her one take of Judgement & Punishment.
You should check out Kardavox Academy. He does some incredibly detailed breakdowns of what metal vocalists are doing on the fly. He's got such an insane grasp of what you're doing with your false chords, fry screams, etc.
The weird thing about Courtney's screams, as opposed to, say, Tatiana from Jinjer or Alyssa from Arch Enemy, is that Courtney seems to involve her true vocal folds. If so, that's just amazing. Her one-take of Circle With Me is even more incredible, if such a thing is possible. ua-cam.com/video/zMnfkW9UZc4/v-deo.html And if you want to hear her go off completely, I'd suggest Holy Roller or Silk in the Strings.
Jinjer for sure. Also Sleep Token. Vessel (their singer) has an AMAZING voice and doesn't usually have screams or harsh vocals but can do them and uses them in their recent songs "The Summoning" and "Vore". As for some other good metal vocals (not all have screams), check out: "Dissension" or "Revive" from Nemophila "Tonight We Ride" or "Awakening" from Unleash the Archers "Skeleton Key" or "Essence of Silence" - live from Epica "Ghost Love Score" - live, Storytime" - live, "Romanticide" - live, and "Yours Is An Empty Hope" - live from Nightwish "Kingdom" - live from Devin Townsend "Slave" - live from Leprous "Outliers (Retrospect)" from Aviations OK, I have to stop. There are so many more great ones I'll just keep going and going but hopefully you got around to hearing some of these.
This leap from singing to nearly ...belching is very hilarious. I could never did it , but judging as a musician , there is no cohesion between those 2 styles with throws me off this.
Tatiana's (Jinjer) singing to screaming or screaming to singing transition is phenomenal. Courtney does a great job too! Courtney's screaming reminds me of a band called Waited. The song is called "Absolution".
Avienne from Vintersea as well does the transitions pretty damn well, and she does what neither Tatiana nor Courtney do, and that's the blackened high fry screams (which are even harder than the false chord screams they do)
Jinjer is an excellent choice that I would recommend and enjoy your reaction to, particularly live performances, or the one take vocal of “Judgement & Punishment” but I also like “Perennial” (live at Wacken) and “Who Is Gonna Be The One” (live not at Wacken) ✌🏼🙏🏼
A very underrated band with amazing duo vocals (female and male) is Unexpect from Canada and I'm sure they will blow your mind. My suggestion track is Words from their last album.
Look for "Kardavox Academy" and "Chris Liepe" on UA-cam. Others have mentioned "Elizabeth Zharoff" of Chiasmatic Voice, who is also an Opera singer. She has worked with Chris Liepe, and Will Ramos of the band "Lorna Shore" to see how metal vocalists make these sounds. Including using a scope to video Will's throat.
Great job 👍 with your reaction and analysis of The One Take of Rules of Nine from Spritebox . You have a great voice your self Cristina. Courtney Sream Vocals sound more from her chest They her Head . My favorite part of the video is look when she says l did It?
Chris Liepe has good screaming tutorials. I'm primarily a bassist, and I don't understand the mechanics of vocals well enough to explain how to scream, but I can say from experience that if you're doing it correctly you won't feel it in your vocal chords, and it's a super relaxed feeling sound to make. If you feel a tickling or rattling feeling in your vocal chords, stop and try something else. Tuesday of last week, I was recording a cover of Pennyroyal Tea, and the "tea" in the second to last chorus didn't break up like it was supposed to, and rather than redo the take, I tried to push it. I finished the song (badly), then couldn't talk Wednesday, and sounded like a bass version of RFK Jr. Thursday through Saturday, and only started sounding human-ish again on Sunday. I'm back to normal now, so I'll be giving it another shot asap, but I did learn my lesson about pushing.
Tutorials!!! Chris Liepe has a lot of videos about healthy distortion. Also he does collabs with Will Ramos and Elizabeth Zaroff (Charismatic Voice) where they go deeper into the low growls that Will does. With Will's warm up routine that you can access for free that includes kargyraa throat signing (for control of the false chords I presume? It works it's awesome!). I am sorry for namedropping other youtubers. I know their names have been mentionned before. Your channel is amazing I look forward to watching a lot of your backlog! Edit: Ok I'm a new subscriber I didn't look at your backlog before commenting. I'll probably watch pretty much all of it lol
Check out Lamb Of God - Ghost Walking (Stefanie Stuber) at The Voice of Germany 2019 if you like high energetic switches in and out of Scream voices (inhale).
I love Courtney's screaming because it sounds so organic, like she's really angry. I like that there's some pitch in there; maybe some true folds participation? Her clean voice is so gentle and inviting, which makes a wonderful contrast. Her body language while she sings is also interesting. The band is super-tight and accomplished, too. But Cristina, it looks like you haven't yet reacted to the most shocking vocal performance I've ever seen: Angelina Jordan slaying I Put A Spell On You with her own arrangement, recorded when she was nine years old. Here's a link to the black & white video shot in the studio: ua-cam.com/video/nwFloCPXzCs/v-deo.html
She does that thing where her screams start with an almost clean kind of yelling thing before going distorted. It's reminiscent of a lot of "core" bands of the 2000s.
Fun reaction! A great video that explains how the different types of harsh vocals work is this video by vocal coach Mary Z: ua-cam.com/video/GBrGvh4LjMs/v-deo.html She also has videos teaching each kind, but first it's useful to understand the different types. I'll add to everyone else's requests for Courtney's one take of Circle With Me. Also, one thing worth noting about Courtney's vocals is that she is far more able than most people to allow some level of true vocal fold phonation into her harsh vocals, which is *very* tricky to do in a safe way. It lets her play with sound in between and/or combining harsh vocals with pitch in a way that most people can't.
Actually, it's not that hard to combine some true vocals into harsh vocals as long as you stay in your natural tone. And that means true and harsh vocals both when used together. Then it's quite fluent and allows some light pitch shifts. Same as speaking normally. It's way harder (and more dangerous) to combine more technical vocals. You can combine a high scream with a falsetto and a growl with a subharmonic or even a bass structure. But a growl with a falsetto? That's extremely hard if it's even possible. Just some minor insights in that topic.
The charismatic voice did a really cool video doing a little throat scope thing with Will Ramos the vocalist of Lorna shore. It’s a really cool video and bit might answer some questions about screaming for you
Devin Townsend - Kingdom (emg tv version) and to learn more about metal screaming - watch The Charismatic Voice channel with Will Ramos (singer for Lorna Shore, metal band) they've got lots of videos on this. Also, Devin Townsend interviews. Both are great knowledge givers.
video team up with Kadovox Academy might be in order. That said, finding full-bore classic singing along with significant variations in screaming is tough to find in one vocalist; most have more depth in one than another (naturally), with more complexity in one than another. Earthside ft Björn Strid of Soilwork - Crater (progressive metal) ua-cam.com/video/mKOlyFZLR2Q/v-deo.html My picks for HQ widest range of both clean and dirty techniques in a single song... Also haven't seen many reactions to this. I've only seen 1 vocal breakdown (Beth Roars). Bjorn is known for lots of harsh and clean singing techniques with Soilwork, but this ticked more techniques and octaves (I believe its nearly 3) than any other song I know of him. If anyone ever finds an HQ live version of him singing this, I need it. Right now. Kim Dracula - Seventy Thorns ft Jonathan Davis ua-cam.com/video/aMcpF8uLpD4/v-deo.html Kardovox has done this one: at least 2 harsh techniques and more clean techniques than I can count... baritone scat, fry speak, 80s-rock level belt, and then some. 3 octaves here as well I think. Davis does clean only, but it sounds like he overlaid harmony on himself at an octave. Igorrr - Cheval ua-cam.com/video/vS7X5nuvjHo/v-deo.html ieuD has been done by Kardovox, and while it has more techniques from the two vocalists, the guest instruments in this put it over the top. The pieces, especially harsh, are clear tonal steps and an excellent place to get in to screaming with tonality. Fair warning, Igorrr is my example of where genius meets madness, and this will not be like other songs.
If you haven't already, check out Kardavox Academy and Extreme Vocal Institute on UA-cam. Excellent must-watch channels on all things screaming/harsh vocals :)
The channel Extreme Vocal Institute is one of the best for learning about screaming. Fry screams and false chord are the most popular techniques. Andy Cizek also has a couple good videos on those techniques
Oh boy, everyone is going to tell you to check out Pisces now. You gotta do it. And then it'll be Perennial live at Wacken for the next one. And then you'll be in love with Tatiana.
really good reaction, love how you explain vocal techniques, please react to Vintersea for another great metal band with different types of singing and screaming
There's a famous YT vocal coach (and opera singer) - Elizabeth Zharoff - from "The Charismatic Voice" which did an in lab scientific analysis of what's going on inside a metal singer when they do screaming/gutural singing. The singer in case is the frontman of "Lorna Shore" and the video is called "OPERATION: "Throat Camera". Will Ramos of Lorna Shore scoped while he performs harsh vocals!" [I didn't add the link because it could be marked as spam]
Really like to hear the analysis of Courtney's subtle breath techniques which do kind of resemble Sinead O'Connor, Delores Riordan or Sharon den Adel. So many focus only on her screams but her genius is the range of styles and the very unique power she has to transition fast.
I think the main tip is to distinguish between vocal fry screams and false chord screams, often called growls. I'm not an expert, but I'm pretty sure Cortney uses vocal fry screams. And that was also the technique that you learnt about in a previous video on this channel: ua-cam.com/video/oxPZ_5aK0iU/v-deo.html I suppose people really love to see women doing harsh vocal techniques these days, so then I recommend Tatiana from Jinjer as an example of someone doing more false chord growls. Again, I'm not expert. I'm sure someone will correct me if I've miscategorized anything.
Her one take of Circle with Me is amazing…
Yes, and that's so much more impressive than the album version.
Her vocals with Trey on Gear Gods is cool. They place the "Dice Songwriting Game".

The Charismatic Voice did a scope of Will from Lorna Shore while he was doing some harsh vocals. Explains so much on how he makes the sounds he does. Imagine it’s similar. Well worth the watch for deeper explanation.
Vine por Courtney y quede hipnotizado por la mirada de Cristina Russo.
I love this band!
Courtney's great!
Highly recommend her one take of "Circle with Me" :]. Great reaction!
You should check out Kardavox Academy. He does some incredibly detailed breakdowns of what metal vocalists are doing on the fly. He's got such an insane grasp of what you're doing with your false chords, fry screams, etc.
Jinjer is a must. I would suggest Home Back as Tatiana does some brutal lows. Great reaction! Love this content!
The weird thing about Courtney's screams, as opposed to, say, Tatiana from Jinjer or Alyssa from Arch Enemy, is that Courtney seems to involve her true vocal folds. If so, that's just amazing.
Her one-take of Circle With Me is even more incredible, if such a thing is possible.
ua-cam.com/video/zMnfkW9UZc4/v-deo.html
And if you want to hear her go off completely, I'd suggest Holy Roller or Silk in the Strings.
Jinjer for sure. Also Sleep Token. Vessel (their singer) has an AMAZING voice and doesn't usually have screams or harsh vocals but can do them and uses them in their recent songs "The Summoning" and "Vore".
As for some other good metal vocals (not all have screams), check out:
"Dissension" or "Revive" from Nemophila
"Tonight We Ride" or "Awakening" from Unleash the Archers
"Skeleton Key" or "Essence of Silence" - live from Epica
"Ghost Love Score" - live, Storytime" - live, "Romanticide" - live, and "Yours Is An Empty Hope" - live from Nightwish
"Kingdom" - live from Devin Townsend
"Slave" - live from Leprous
"Outliers (Retrospect)" from Aviations
OK, I have to stop. There are so many more great ones I'll just keep going and going but hopefully you got around to hearing some of these.
Pisces by Jinjer for sure..love both bands
Your eyes !! ❤❤❤❤❤
This leap from singing to nearly ...belching is very hilarious. I could never did it , but judging as a musician , there is no cohesion between those 2 styles with throws me off this.
I like the outtakes 😂
I also like her "sweet" voice, the place she is in...is so mesmerising.
Tatiana's (Jinjer) singing to screaming or screaming to singing transition is phenomenal. Courtney does a great job too! Courtney's screaming reminds me of a band called Waited. The song is called "Absolution".
Avienne from Vintersea as well does the transitions pretty damn well, and she does what neither Tatiana nor Courtney do, and that's the blackened high fry screams (which are even harder than the false chord screams they do)
@@swaillidan5558 Māra is great too!
@@swaillidan5558 Entheos also. The song "I am the void" and "Oblivion".
This rabbit hole is definitely leading to your first one-take
Riiickyyyy!
I love how my metal brainrot looked at her sweater and tried to figure out what band logo that is 😂
Great job 👍 with your reaction and analysis of The One Take of Rules of Nine from Spritebox .
Jinjer is a must Tatiana is the best female scream;/growl out there
Jinjer judgement and punishment one take is absolutely worth reviewing!
Please listen to Jinjer - Pisces. The Live session is very impressive and Tatiane is awesome singer.
The craziest part about this live performance is that she was sick
The first time I heard Spiritbox I thought it was two differed singers till I saw circle with me one take.
u have to react to Jinjer pisces live session, it will blow ur mind 100%
HIGHLY recommend you watch the video of Will Ramos getting a laryngoscopy(camera down the throat) while doing the screams. It's wild stuff!🤘🤘🤘🤘
Kardavox Academy if you haven't checked him out yet
The charismatic voice did a really cool video doing a little throat scope thing with Will Ramos the vocalist of Lorna shore. It’s a really cool video and bit might answer some questions about screaming for you
Devin Townsend - Kingdom (emg tv version) and to learn more about metal screaming - watch The Charismatic Voice channel with Will Ramos (singer for Lorna Shore, metal band) they've got lots of videos on this. Also, Devin Townsend interviews. Both are great knowledge givers.
Probably you hace seen some reaction about this one but it is worth Jinjer - Pisces
She sang for iwrestledabearonce. That's where I first discovered her.
video team up with Kadovox Academy might be in order. That said, finding full-bore classic singing along with significant variations in screaming is tough to find in one vocalist; most have more depth in one than another (naturally), with more complexity in one than another.
Earthside ft Björn Strid of Soilwork - Crater (progressive metal)
ua-cam.com/video/mKOlyFZLR2Q/v-deo.html
My picks for HQ widest range of both clean and dirty techniques in a single song...
Right now.
Kim Dracula - Seventy Thorns ft Jonathan Davis
ua-cam.com/video/aMcpF8uLpD4/v-deo.html
Kardovox has done this one: at least 2 harsh techniques and more clean techniques than I can count... baritone scat, fry speak, 80s-rock level belt, and then some. 3 octaves here as well I think. Davis does clean only, but it sounds like he overlaid harmony on himself at an octave.
Igorrr - Cheval
ua-cam.com/video/vS7X5nuvjHo/v-deo.html
ieuD has been done by Kardovox, and while it has more techniques from the two vocalists, the guest instruments in this put it over the top.
Opeth - "Bleak"
Blind Guardian - "Time Stands Still"
really good reaction, love how you explain vocal techniques, please react to Vintersea for another great metal band with different types of singing and screaming
So many focus only on her screams but her genius is the range of styles and the very unique power she has to transition fast.
the video OPERATION: "Throat Camera" by a channel called "the charismatic voice might not be instructional but will definetily interest you
Spiritbox :-)❤
I think the main tip is to distinguish between vocal fry screams and false chord screams, often called growls. I'm not an expert, but I'm pretty sure Cortney uses vocal fry screams. And that was also the technique that you learnt about in a previous video on this channel: ua-cam.com/video/oxPZ_5aK0iU/v-deo.html
I suppose people really love to see women doing harsh vocal techniques these days, so then I recommend Tatiana from Jinjer as an example of someone doing more false chord growls.
Again, I'm not expert. I'm sure someone will correct me if I've miscategorized anything.
I haven't recovered from the Phantom of the Opera/scream vocalist. Stayed with me a little
