I have a 2012 the cylinder nearest the driver is burning oil my machanic said that ring was collapsed in that cylinder could it be just the valve cover? It has 180000miles on it
Hey, I have a 2008 gmc Sierra with 203k miles, same engine, new tranny at 180. But haven’t had any engine issues, just had all the seals for oil replaced. Blessed with this truck, she’s my daily work truck. Blessed
Had a 2009 Sierra. I had to replace the oil pressure sensor twice and had crazy oil consumption. I replaced the valve cover with the bigger pcv valve in it and switched to full synthetic oil and it stopped burning so much oil. But I had a nearly trouble free 200k before I traded it in. Great truck!
Broken exhaust manifold bolts. Causing an exhaust leak "ticking" which a lot of people think is a lifter. Gm went with regular old bolts on the exhaust manifold and after about 10yrs or so the bolt heads break off from stress and heat cycling; then the manifold moves away from the head and leaks. Extracting these broken bolts can be extremely difficult especially if it's the dreaded driver's side rear there is very little access. The bolts that break are usually driver's rear, driver's front and passenger rear. They sell aftermarket clamps that bolt to preexisting holes in the cylinder head then a bolt puts pressure on the manifold to seal up a leak. It's a bandaid but can work. So gm knows about the issue and designed around it. Most manufacturers use studs to avoid these problems.
Thanks for the information. I have a 2013 Sierra that's ready to hit 120k and just love it. It still runs great and looks good. My biggest gripe is the interior driver's door arm rest broke in half and found out that you have to replace the whole door panel to fix it. I just put some tape around it for now until I find a better solution.
I bought a 2012 April of last year. When I buy a used vehicle, I always change all fluids front to back even the gear oil in front and back differentials. The truck takes 6 quarts of full synthetic 5w30 oil. Here's what happened to me one day.... In January my family and I were coming home from taking my son to the doctor when the check engine light came on. I got the truck home (Thank God) hooked it up to my OBDII scanner and it wash the oil pressure sensor. I was going to replace it but a guy on here told me to check my oil first. When I checked it, the dipstick didn't have a drop of oil on it. (I FLIPPED OUT) I just paid $18K on this truck! So, I went ahead and ordered both valve covers because I wanted both of them to be clean and to also match one another. I've installed both of them, but I've not checked to see if it worked because after installing them the passenger side pcv outlet on the new one has a flared end on it and the original didn't have that. So, I went to Advanced Auto to buy a rubber hose to use on it after I cut the pressure clip off of the pcv hose. I also decided to get me and new gas cap while I was at it. Anyways, I hope and pray that the new valve covers help the "Oil Consumption Problem." I'm sort of worried about it though because that's a lot of oil being consumed in just 4,000 - 4,500 miles. Yes, I've also checked for leaks and there were none. I've seen vehicles that are burning oil, but this truck doesn't do like that. The only time I've seen blue smoke out of the exhaust pipe is when climbing a hill, but it's just a small amount and then it's gone. If you were not paying attention to it, you wouldn't notice it. I've also checked my antifreeze for oil to and if good. Another thing, after I change the oil the dipstick doesn't read right which has me stumped. It should be on the full area, but it shows as if I put 12 quarts instead of 6. I'm thinking it got the wrong dipstick in it, but if anyone knows something different let me know.

So they asking GMcomp. To make a recall, And now gm offering a some Silverados with out DFM and fully working v8 fully time engines on these trucks.🤝👍👍👍
The 305 V8 is one of the last engines GM made right. They rely on an old technology (waste spark ignition as opposed to coil-on-plug ignition) but that technology is pretty much bulletproof per its simplicity. Only thing is, when you service the distributor cap and rotor, make sure to align the rotor to the correct time, otherwise your ignition will be ever so slightly out of time, causing the engine to run rough.
Always have issues with low oil pressure - already replace the sensor and screen twice and it keeps happening . Now I also have an issue where it cranks and it does not start . When it starts black smoke comes thru the muffler pipe
Please make another video. You did not address the AFM lifter issue that can require cam replacement. The seal on the oil pickup tube is also a common issue.
The 5.3 had porosity issues when the aluminum blocks were cast, didn't fix it until 2015. See the TSB, leaks coolant into the bores. solution is a new engine.
Once they start getting a lot of miles, the lifter tick is probably fairly common. But if you take good care, change the oil every 3000 miles, maybe you’ll never get a lifter tick.
I get the tick only on start up for a few seconds then it goes away. But if the truck sits for 2 days the tick lasts longer till she warms up. Got 138k on my 08 sierra
A lot of the lifter tick issue (what you actually hear) is exhaust manifold leaks. Very few that I've come across with more than like 250k km (155k ish miles) has some form of exhaust leak that emits a lifter tick noise.
Build dates of February 2011 to 2013 are the fully updated Gen 4 LS V8s that are bulletproof reliable. Just plug in a Range Technology dongle v4 disabler and change your oil ON TIME!!!!
What about the stuck lifters from the fuel saver function. Where it goes from 4 to 8 cylinders - to save fuel - then the issue with the lifters that stick!

(first year of the AFM, I guess), had bad piston rings. My cam phasers just blew, have an insanely weird rattle coming from the inside top of the engine, with turning the key on, before starting, and after turning it off, the engine stops completely, but the rattle continues. That's just the engine itself, don't get me started on the added engine components. Bulletproof? I hate to disagree, but here in the rust belt, I have yet to see one of this gen hit 200k with no issues. I'm sure it happens, but not around here. Last good engine I've seen from GM was the 4.2L I-6. I've owned 2 GM vehicles, and both had major engine issues. Will never buy another.
Just bought a 2007 5.3 LT with 169k miles. Truck has been great so far. Runs and shifts smooth. Only problem I’ve had so far is the check engine light comes on and off randomly.
2010 Silverado cranks over good only fires every 4-6 turns overs before start, like no fuel but after 3rd key turn it smells like it is flooded. I do the most evil thing at that point and hold key to on and peddle to the floor if it dosent start after the 3rd. only happens in morning and after work you turn it off and it fires up right away, with in a half hr or so after first start. what do you think?
I have the 2007 5.3. I'm approaching 120k with it. What would everyone suggest I do in terms of maintance to prepare for the milestone?
