This video solved a problem for me. Until now, the clear coat has been The Final Frontier because very few people are prepared to discuss clear coat technique, much less recovery from flaws. Camera work is steady, and narration clear and concise. Naturally, I subscribed.
I have watched a lot of your videos and cannot thank you enough. I was a painter years ago but following issues with my long term memory and in general health spend a lot of time again getting involved again just to pass time, friends and family etc. You are so informative with your narration it has helped me no end as well as bring me up to date with new products. Thank you very much and keep them coming.
@@Refinishnetwork Hi, I just recently sprayed my car with only 2 coats of base coat and 2 quick coats of clear coat. Will it be okay to polish/buff it out a bit?
Love your vids and your approach to the DIY guy with limited tools and resources for general "spot" bodywork projects. I have learned a lot watching your vids. Keep up the great work!
Good 👍 video thanks for sharing that I have just painted my ford focus mk3 front bumper and it's got a little bit of dirt in can I used a DA sander with 1500 and 2000 I have some G3 compound plus I havd a little clear coat paint run how do I get it out
you will of flattened out the orange peel affect that cars come out of the shop with and spraying with a can causes so it will stand out like dogs balls so the best thing to do is try not to get dust in it so you don't have to sand it
I'm using that same spray max clear, and some Canadian Tire base paint (found the perfect blue - Dark Blue Metallic, it's a GM colour) and that STUPID big red chair that ALWAYS flips over, drives me crazy. Great to see this video, thank you! BTW, doing my whole car =) (even have those same gloves, haha did I make this video and just forget!?)
Thanks for the video (and the previous one)! I learned some new tricks. I’ve watched a lot of these, and it’s always helpful to list the products you use. I’d like to know which specific compound and polish and pads.
Great Video... I am dropping my Jeep back off at the Body Shop tomorrow because they didn't pay attention to detail like you do. My rear hatch on my Cherokee is all dimpled up with dirt in the clear as well as someone left finger prints. Looks like they didn't even polish it out?
Do you still check your videos? I just did a tailgate and the clear didn't come out well. Didn't shine up. Can I get it to shine up by polishing/buffing it out?
Do you have any tips for restoring the clear coat on interior pieces, for example some hard plastics’ clear coat turning yellow over time. I have a jzx100 chaser and my “carbon fiber” panels have gone yellow. I’ve restored one but it’s not as reflective as it used to be. I sanded with 120-320-600-800-1500-2000. Then I sprayed clear coat over it(rattle can), at this point it looked shiny but it had orange peel, so then sanded the orange peel with 2000 grit. Then polished it. It’s black again but it’s not very reflective now. Any tips? Thanks in advance!
How do you get rid of flakes in clearcoat I didn't use a color blender when I painted my truck just used basecoat and 2k clearcoat. Can I just polish it I already used ceramic coating on it but you can see on the hood in front the small clearcoat flaky look.
This is with rattle can paint? What kind? I've been able to get good results with spray paint in the past but it doesn't seem to hold up, clear coat especially seems to peel after maybe a year? This was with the $23 stuff from Napa or Sanels! I don't recall the brand.
I'm about to take on a hood and the front and rear bumper covers on a car I just bought for my daughter. It's a 2003 Honda Civic EX two door coupe. I'm going to take them off the car and basically sand them down to metal (or plastic in the case of the bumper covers). Any special advice you can give me on the color red for what I'm doing?
Hi. Tx for the demo. I'm curious, can a person spray another coat of clear onto a fully finished, cured paint job? Both 1 and 2 stage. Or even on a used vehicle, a few yrs olld? tx again
@@Refinishnetwork Tx for replying. The problem, actually, is orange peel. I did 2 doors and a tailgate to match the factory job. Both sides, primer, base color, clear. Clear was 2 parts. I have orange peel over 80-90% of the job. Pretty heavy in some spots. I'm going to try and flatten it tommorrow, and I wanted to know my tolerances, if I can just spray it again if worse comes to worse, I go to deep, or I'm sure something unforseen even after watching 56 videos on it,lol. But I get my DA tom, and I bought 3 stages of compounds, so it will get a good polish. It just occurred to me, if I go to deep I will have scratched the base color, lol. Autopaint is frkn ridiculous in it's finickyness and unique apps. I don't envy you. Peace
Great vids man. You're giving me confidence to fix the scratch on my 2008 Mustang GT (Dark Candy Apple Red). The scratch is about 4-5" in length on the passenger door. The scratch itself can barley be felt by my fingernail. Also, the S197's are notorious for bubbling under the hood, the bubbling now has moved to the front lip. Maybe the size of a quarter. I received a few quotes, the range was $1200-1900 combined. 1. One of the body shops, told me the entire door needed to be stripped, and repainted. Same thing for the hood... Is this accurate? (Quote was for a little over $1,900) 2. Is it hard to get decent results (nice finish etc) for a 1st timer? 3. Do I need Body Filler? I seen a video of a guy using Body Filler, and he added what looked like blue toothpaste. He applied it, and sanded. Then he added another layer of something called Ever-Glaze-Spot Putty, and sanded that. 4. Is "blending" the paint difficult? 5. Will I see a difference in color and shine? 6. Can I get the same results as a spray gun? Should I just but the spray gun, and do it that way? 7. Is "hardener" used on every coat? (2-3 coats of primer, 3 coats of paint, 3 coats of clear. Again, your vids rock! Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
What happens if you finish painting and putting the clear coat on, then notice there is a bit that needs more paint…..does that mean I have to sand it right back and start again?
Hi, I just had my car roof resprayed and there's one annoying high spot of lacquer which I think I will try and attempt to sand down. How long do I spend sanding in that specific area to get rid of the high spot? Your advise would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
I feel good about the front M/C fender I just painted with rustoleum professional (spray can), it has half the orange peal this car has and it's solid color black, no clear. I was going to block it but it looks better than this car. (I'm not talking about the work he just did). This paint went on great, one light coat and two fairly heavy coats, no runs, no sags, just some minor orange peal. It would probably look even better if I cleared it?
I just finish painting my car. I have wait 3 days and wet sanding it to 2500 grit sand paper. I park and buff my car out side, but the weather is rainny or cold outside, and it gave me a foggy result. But the next day is warmer, and i polisg it again, and the result is better shinny. Does the cold weather can cause foggy clear coat when you buff the clear coat? Thanx broooo
I really like your video , I have a question, how long after pain can you spray the clear coat? and do you sand after the clear coat before polishing?THANK YOU.
I want to try something a little different. First I have bad patients sanding and preping a entire car.I have the idea of doing the entire prep and paint clear polish etc ONE PANEL AT A TIME . My reason? As well as doing a better job concentrating on one at a time, If I F it up i"ve only ruined one panel not the entire /car. So if I used the same paint. Same clear. Same gun setting etc. Is it OK to do one panel at a time till the entire car is painted. The car will be done non metallic silver and MAYBE a Perl in the clear. I do have some experience ( long ago ) spraying cars. Your thoughts?
My project was going okay until the clearcoat phase. It went on totally matte, even though it was supposed to be a high gloss. Can any amount of polishing fix this? Thanks!
Hello, Do you have any tips how to shine up a brand new painted car? I usually paint/clear coat. then I take out makita and use a wool pad with stage 1 3M. How do I determine when I can move on to stage 2 of 3M? and then wax with the pad? I burnt a edge today of my car bummper
Use 3m perfect it system. Pads and compound polishes for the burn edge sand it again and compound it maybe rpm on polisher is to high and creating to much heat be careful and move faster around edges
Hey! great vids!)i have problem with polishing... maybe u can help? problem is - i start to sand dirt with 1500 paper with water , but it leaves scratches... which stays after polyshing with 3m bottles... sanding with block.... but it is wooden block... Also it's Sia abrasives sandpaper.... any suggestions? Thank you!
Good video thanks , I like your videos. I had alot of questions on buffing but you have cleared most of them for me . If I were painting the whole car what spray gun would you suggest if you are on a budget? Yes my car is silver , Marble head metallic . I have sprayed with rattle can and I have sprayed with a sprayer only primer though.
Clearcoat is about 1.5 to 2 mils thick on factory paint, and considerably more on repainted body panels. When you abrade the clearcoat while removing defects such as swirls, light scratches and orange peel, you are removing micron thin layers of clear. Granted, as long as you are sanding with 1500 or 2000 grit. Mirca makes a 4000 grit DA Pad which I like to use on Show Finishes.
It could be sanded, primed and spot painted if small enough. Usually if clear is peeling, the entire panel is compromised and it’s a bigger job to repair.
Hey bro i know u get this question alot but i just want your opinion what is the best bang for your buck when it comes to buying a base gun for shooting base i have a sata jet rp 3000 1.2 tip for clear and it dose a good job! need a good gun for base What you think
