Hey Scott, question how many pads should I have per pad type? And how do you store and organize your pads? Please make a short video about it and any other important for beginners.
Quote , Im not going to worry about the power cord its only a junk yard hood. I can appreciate your remark but you maybe should show the absolute best way to start out the proper way. As you have mentioned this video is to teach beginners. I like your vids, and find near all of views and opinion to be worthwhile. I hope I dont sound too critical. Your a good man, keep it up.
Scott, I just wanted to say thank you for this video, and your whole channel. I appreciate the realistic, no-nonsense approach. And I feel you really have the heart of a teacher. Just bought my first polisher and can’t wait to give it a go! Thanks again!
Thank you for keeping it real was tired of all the other youtubers spending 2-4mins just about liking and subscribing bla bla bla u get right to it. Thank you for your videos
Scott after watching your videos (especially this one) I started detailing cars and now have a discretionary income I never thought possible - thank you so much for having a massive impact on people like me :-)
You have saved me from my paralysis. I wish I had seen this video before all the others which had me buying Meguiar's 105 and 205 and only then reading about the problems with using 105, the dusting, etc. With you telling us beginners that we can do a good job with Griot's Complete Compound, I bought it, used it with a green foam pad, and wow, the car looked great. I'm a raw beginner, 81 years old, detailing a 2000 BMW M Coupe in Imola Red. Of course, I preceded the polishing with a foam cannon, two bucket wash, Iron X, Nanoskin cloth for claying and ended with Turtle Wax Ice Seal and Shine. Yesterday I brought my car to the local BMW's dealer Octoberfest and got lots of compliments, although the compliments might have been for the relatively rare M Coupe, except if I had brought it in prior to the 9 hours it took me to detail it, I don't think I would have gotten as many compliments. Anyway, thanks for all your down to earth videos and your NY or NJ accent makes me feel like I'm home again after living in semi-rural PA for over 50 years.
"If you follow everything I tell you, you will get great results". This is a true statement. My detailing has grown from a 3 to nearly an 8. Great info always Scott!
The best I’ve seen for a beginner. Well done Scott. Too many others never explain the basics or what all the different pads are about. As you say, we all have to start somewhere. Thank you.
I love this guy! Love that east coast accent. Not only have a learned how to do paint correction for my older cars, but I've also enjoyed watching the polishing- so therapeutic!! Thanks Scott!! My 2006 midnight blue metallic Odyssey minivan went through a repaint because the crappy Honda paint was peeling off the hood and roof. I still see other cars of the same year and color around my neighborhood painstakingly continue to drive around their vans and don't want to spend the cash in having their family-hauler repainted. We have been victims of Honda's crappy water-based paint that they unfortunately used on their vehicles. Luckily I had a local Maaco repaint my van for less than $2500 with stellar results (far more less expensive than 10K from other shops). Now I want to take the steps in caring for my van and the paint. This is how I want to do it. I owe it to the old van who's taken me and my family around places for many years. I don't have a garage and it sits outside all the time in the sun, but hoping a little polishing and correction will help it with being out there against the elements. I plan to do a clay-bar first after a car wash before I do the correction/polishing. I'm putting together a wish-list of the equipment I need to buy before tackling this weekend-warrior project.
I’ve been a car buff for the majority of my life. At 63 years old I’ve owned Audi’s, Chevrolet’s, Subaru’s and Porsche’s. The last time I used a buffer on my car was in the early 90s. The buffer I attempted to use then was a one speed monster and the bonnet was attached to the buffer with a band of elastic. A real POS. I got tired of seeing the swirl marks in my Glacier White paint on my current car, so I ordered a buffer through Amazon with Griots Complete Compond. I watched your video. Thank you! The car looks amazing. No more swirl marks. The days of hand waxing are over for me.
I was lucky to get that fear out in high school in autobody repair class. The one important rule I was taught was when running a buffer or polisher to make sure the pad is running off the edges and not into them. Keep the pad in motion like scott said. Oh, and dont use too much product in one shot. That stuff will fling everywhere and cause you more clean up than you need. Scot I love your channel, I've learned some great thing from you. When you decide to quit doing this you'll be missed for sure
I would like to add, being a beginner myself. Make sure you wash the area your going to be correcting / polishing 1st. I would even recommend using a clay bar, or clay mitt type of thing to remove surface particles before polishing. If your going to be doing this outside, as most of us will, you will get better results in the shade. Direct sunlight in the summer will make your panel very hot, and evaporate the lubricant in the compound faster, making the compound harder to take off.
Like how you just say it is without a filter, nice job. They way you say how we think and you actually say it like you know what we are thinking helps eliminate the questions because you already answer them.
I started my mobile detail business 5 months ago in El Paso, I wouldnt say I'm a beginner, but not an expert. Just a Thank you for your videos and knowledge you share with us in the detail world!
how do i remove the oxidation to the paint if my clear coat is gone. on the roof the last chip of clear coat is almost done flaking off and the hood and trunk are fading and turning white
@@budlight2969 at that point you have to repaint the area or the car depending how bad it is. The point of polishing is if you have clear coat to polish since that’s what holds the scratches and the swirls and it’s what makes your paint look shiny and hold paint protection.
I'm a beginner! Scott was terrific and and broke things down to steps, explained which pads to use when, how much pressure to exert on the polisher for different pads and importantly when to advance. I learned a great deal and am much more confident! Thanks.
You would make an excellent Trades teacher! You have such a patient teaching virtue ! While you show teaching examples of how to do it , you are also explaining reasons for your proper technique and how to come out with an outstanding end result!
Scott I just came across this video and have to say thanks for reminding me that as a beginner of anything is overwhelming but you just have to start and get into it. You broke the process down to its basics for me and that helped tremendously. Thank you!
I first watched this video almost 2 years ago. Today, I am going to follow your guide and polish my car for the first time. Thank you Scott for the encouragement.
Thanks dude youve put everything about buffing at ease ive been forever looking for the perfect combo but now youve showed me that its not about how much you spend on the product its how you use it thank you
So incredibly happy I found your channel! I have a serious love of cars, but my usual car care involves a wiping down the interior and at most a clay bar/wax for the outside. I really enjoy how easy going and accessible you are! It really helps out for folks like me who are trying to get a better understanding of all this stuff!
I just want to say thank you for this video. I have never polished a vehicle with a polisher. After watching this video I picked up everything I needed and I machine polished my brand new black F-150. It looks amazing. Again thank you for taking the time to help others like me.
Thanks Scott! I was in this place about 2 months ago. Your videos gave me the confidence to touch my paint with a DA. Still haven't quite gotten great at it, but your videos really teach me a lot.
I know you'll probably never see this. But I have a 2004 Dodge Stratus Coupe RT with a cheap black maaco paint job. I followed this exactly and my paint turned out amazing. I had bad swirling and a haze to the car and it looks like a mirror now! I was nervous to do it but this was very easy but very time consuming! Thank you again
Thanks for not wasting people's time. Appreciate your breakdown and will stick with you on the other videos. The internet sucks now a days. Appreciate you.
Thanks as always Scott, appreciate your frankness and professionalism. I like that you really want other people to get into the hobby (and/or profession!) of car detailing and are very generous with your time and experience. Cheers
Scott lol Man I love love love your approach to making people feel at ease doing paint correction, I’m a newbie myself but been reading about everything detailing /ppf/ceramic etc but I’m never ever gonna say I’ve mastered everything. I just wanna say that we need more people like you on UA-cam enjoying what you do and making others enjoy this awesome hobby/Job etc… like I said I wanna learn as much as I can to do a little moonlighting out of my garage and people like you have given me the knowledge I have now , so hats off to you and keep up the great work… first video I saw from you by the way and I’m gonna watch more brutha
Hi Scott, after viewing this video, I now am confident and not afraid of polishing my beautiful classic 67 Mustang Gt. Mostly removing various medium scratches from the hood and top of fenders. After those results, will do the whole car. Thanks for your simple no BS approach to get us newbies started. Blessings and cheers from Motown/Dearborn.
Legit this made me feel so much more comfortable with the idea of doing paint correction. B/c i watch you and others and its so complex i felt like i would mess up the paint
One of your best videos ever, and you have great videos. If only more guys were like you. I believe you genuinely want and try to help us! Thank you Scott!!
I'm just now diving into the world of "detailing". Fear is the key word. If I would've known this info years ago, I couldn't saved some of my old car's paint jobs! Hoping to bring back the luster in my current vehicles, thank you!
I started working for a detailing company about a year ago and I can say that at first it’s intimidating to polish a car but over the time you get the hang of it and it isn’t as complicated as you think. So if you want to start doing this to your own car, go for it.
Ty for being real. Also, for giving alternative recommendations for ppl who are struggling with finances. For you to share your time, knowledge and experience is generous AF. Thank you 🙏🏻
This video is awesome! Thank you for being so straight forward, I did this last weekend, and the result turned out to be amazing; This video definitely give me more confidence as a beginner, before I was scare to polish because I don't wanna messed up my paint. I got the griot's complete compound and also got Sonax Cut&Finish; I ended up only using Sonax with Maxshine yellow pad which the method he taught in the video, my Challenger turned out so shine like a mirror.
Thank you for the easy method. Nothing this easy was explained a few years ago when I first tried but gave up. Now I'm ready to get mom's car looking good.
absolutely straight talking...love it as I am a beginner and have got confused with the number of videos I have seen. You have made more sense in this presentation!
Glad you done this, I purchased the HF da & have yet to use.. It still has the 6 in on it because I am afraid I will order the wrong backing plate & pads.. 😁 🤗 Love you Scott...
I hear you. I just bought the HF 2 weekends ago and the pads I ordered are in the mail. I spent a ton of time scratching my head over which backing plates and pads to get.
I use a 5" backing plate with 5.5" foam pads. On Scotts video he shows this and with the 5" backing plate you`ll get better performance out of you H/F. Lots of good Foam pads Buff / Shine, L/C, Griots. I scan the detail sites for sales and that's when I pick up mine. Remember the K.I.S.S. method.:)
Katrina, the HF pads and backing plates atr horrible. Please do some research and get rid of the HF junk. Those will fly off and ruin your paint. Blessings.
yea Scott likes them to be .5 above the backing plate.. I watched those videos as well.. I was just afraid it would not fit my HF.. Thank you.. Now I know.. Guess I will try to order a Lake Country baking plate in a 5in & get the CG pads in a 5.5in... THANK YOU guys!
Just read the labels, use good products. It isn't rocket science. Scott is right, don't listen to those who claim to be a "pro". Everyone has their opinions about different products. Go read reviews and pick out a few products. If you are good with your hands you will be a "pro" in no time. Wash, clay bar, polish and wax or seal. There ya go....your a "pro" now.
Wow !! Im getting ready to do paint correction on my cobra. I'm a beginner, and have watched so many videos, and you explained it so good. You the man Scott. Have lots of confidence to male it shine .
To me, it’s fun polishing cars. I always consider myself a newbie, cause no matter what, I feel like I’m learning something new everytime. I don’t know the best compounds or anything. I just love all the different compounds and everything.
This is the best video for beginners I've ever seen. I just got done paying a professional detailer to clean my car polish it and put a 5 year ceramic coating on my. But like every month I'm going to use chemical guys quick spray ceramic to help maintain the original ceramic coating and when the ceramic coating stops working hopefully 5 years from now I can polish my car again and put a new coat of ceramic car on myself because of this video of showing us weekend warriors how to polish a car easily and not be scared so thank you.
THIS! This is the video I needed! I just finished painting my car using a single stage urethane. It's my first paint job ever and It was a learning experience. There is some orange peel and I know that I can wet sand it to remove the larger problem spots, but knowing what polishing products and what color foam pads I will need was confusing. You have cut through all the BS many beginners run into when they start into the various forums and social media channels. Thank You!
This guy is great, he focuses on me us the beginners and put all the battling against the pros and I really appreciate that, your a true person and a professionally, and i was afraid to do this before watching your video, I didn’t want to burn or get swirl marks, Thank You, hey will this help our Military Vehicles, yes I want the best looking one, lol keep up the good work Bud,
Scott, this is a really nice video. I've spent about 20 hours watching, reading, etc., and another 20 hours doing my own cars. That learning curve is pretty extreme. I think your tips and advice are absolutely outstanding. People let great become the enemy of good. For me, I would like that 90-95% finish on the car, but it's just not obtainable safely at my skill level, and the risk of damage increases exponentially. If the goal is to restore oxidized and damaged paint on a daily driver, shooting for perfecting is a fool's errand. It's not a show piece. It's going to take some damage the moment it hits the streets. The reality is that focusing on that last fraction of perfection is simply wasted effort and time because I'm probably never going to the exposure, repetition, and proficiency to master this skill because I can't carve away at my car's clearcoat that much. But I can probably get a 70-80% improvement and take care of nearly any minor to moderate defect -- to the point where only someone with a skilled eye would notice what I missed, but 99.99% of the world will simply see a very nice car that looks nearly factory fresh. That view of the paint from 6' or 3' looking flawless is really what matters for most people, not inspection light perfection.
Just came across this video and not sure you still on UA-cam. But what great motivation you send out. I'm from the UK and was a professional valeter back in my younger day's 'I'm 54 now'. Unless they build a robot that can match our skills, I'd say it's STILL a great profesion to work in. 💯💯❤️🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
How many times can you polish before you're thinning your clear coat too much? On a car you're new to, how do you know there's still enough clear coat to polish?
Used car dealer here. Buffing with normal wax is fine. Using compound will slowly remove the clear coat but it would take many years to go through it. Being too aggressive will burn it but you'd have to really screw up.
Thanks a ton for this video! Bought my 16 year old daughter an older Lexus IS 250 and all I can say is WOW!! Followed the directions exactly as described and it is hard to believe it’s the same car. Huge difference, really appreciate the video!!
Wow! Thank you! Excellent advice! I have two 15 year old cars that have paint issues from age and exposure. I cannot believe how easy it was to restore it with this technique. I’ve been putting off the job, because I didn’t think it was something I could fix myself. Well, I CAN fix it!!
Did I say UA-cam's with a S??
Boy I can be so silly..lol
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Jacob Savage toooooo funny, I was thinking the same thing lol
Ahahahaa, I just bought my own polisher and I planned on practicing on my girlfriend car first also 😂
And she will practice her right to divorce on you
Lol honestly this was my plan too
Lol
I'm a bigginner who was very confused and he made it so simple to understand. Thanks a million
How cool to hear a pro talk to the beginner with respect and eagerness to teach. I love it.
Thank you for keeping it real was tired of all the other youtubers spending 2-4mins just about liking and subscribing bla bla bla u get right to it. Thank you for your videos
I love it when you recommend harbor freight tools for people with lower budget!!!
Not everyone needs an expensive tool if we only use it a few times!
I use the harbor freight d.a. polishers in my business. Theyre good for about a year and a half, even used every other day...
I had a shop tell me yesterday I don't use harbor freight tools 😂😂
I just bought one from harbor freight yesterday!
Thank you sir!!
I have purchased a lot of good tools from harbor freight, nothing wrong with that.
Scott after watching your videos (especially this one) I started detailing cars and now have a discretionary income I never thought possible - thank you so much for having a massive impact on people like me :-)

Glad to hear you still love cars and working on them!
I like people like Scott on social media. No drama, dont sell or promote anything, just teaches what we looking for. Keep it up Scott you the best.

beginners step 1 : practice on your wife's car.
I always test a new product on my wife's car, LOL.
I have a 16 year old. So his truck is the first victim. Then victim #2 is the wife’s suv. Then mine. 😁

I got the griot's complete compound and also got Sonax Cut&Finish; I ended up only using Sonax with Maxshine yellow pad which the method he taught in the video, my Challenger turned out so shine like a mirror.
Thank you for this! I've spent 12 hours researching this stuff... just today. You made it so much simpler for me and took away my fear.
Thank you for the easy method. Nothing this easy was explained a few years ago when I first tried but gave up. Now I'm ready to get mom's car looking good.
Thanks Scott - I’ve got all the detailing stuff except for paint correction because it does scare me. This video really helped!
Today i took a class about polishing 101, tnx Scott
Great advice!! Thank you for taking the time to FINALLY show a simple breakdown of a polishing process.
i really want to learn how to detail like this. Im looking it as a fun thing to do!
absolutely straight talking...love it as I am a beginner and have got confused with the number of videos I have seen. You have made more sense in this presentation!
Yes Scott you have awnser my prayers!
Glad you done this, I purchased the HF da & have yet to use.. It still has the 6 in on it because I am afraid I will order the wrong backing plate & pads.. 😁 🤗 Love you Scott...
@Skull Tap: do you use 6in pads or 6.5? I thought about ordering CG sample kit for $20...
Best motivational video to help us get motivated to do our 1st paint enhancement
finally I really understand a lot of things that had me going crazy, thanx buddy!
I switched off when you said don't listen to us.....job done
born a professional huh? Good for you
Ironically you did listen to him!
I switched after comment surfing... Why does this dickhead keep calling everyone beginners?
Extremely helpful video! and I appreciate the fatherly love coming through too haha
To me, it’s fun polishing cars. I always consider myself a newbie, cause no matter what, I feel like I’m learning something new everytime. I don’t know the best compounds or anything. I just love all the different compounds and everything.
I wish everyone on UA-cam explaining things could do it as clear and great as you do!
your honesty and how direct you address us sold me, I'm following you
I feel like I'm cheating on Ammo being over here.
IcyDeath91 same here... I just bought a Rupes Mark III and a crap load of AMMO products
Same here 🤣🤣
They both top level
Great Video Scott!! Inspired me to start detailing my own car
Thank You!
Amazing video, incredibly helpful. Thank you my dude. Take care.
Aaaaaaaand you earn a sub. Heart of a teacher. Thank you for the knowledge and encouragement!
I would 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍ten thumbs up Scott thanks man for the information love it!!!!
Well Thanks 👍
That just saved me 13 minutes.
This guy is great, he focuses on me us the beginners and put all the battling against the pros and I really appreciate that, your a true person and a professionally, and i was afraid to do this before watching your video, I didn’t want to burn or get swirl marks, Thank You, hey will this help our Military Vehicles, yes I want the best looking one, lol keep up the good work Bud,
hahaha I love this guy . "holy crap I think im a pro" lol
So after this polishing, do I need to put some kind of wax to protect the paint?
Yes! Chemical Guys Hydroslick is one of the best waxes on the market and very easy to apply by hand. I'm not sponsored, just a suggestion!
Thanks Scott! This is exactly what I was looking for. Can I use this technique after I clay bar my car?
Yes, this is meant to be done only after you have gone over your paint with clay.
"I was once affraid, but fear not, my fellow warriors"
How many times can you polish before you're thinning your clear coat too much? On a car you're new to, how do you know there's still enough clear coat to polish?
Used car dealer here. Buffing with normal wax is fine. Using compound will slowly remove the clear coat but it would take many years to go through it. Being too aggressive will burn it but you'd have to really screw up.
Am I the only one getting billy mays vibes from this guy
Thanks a ton for this video! Bought my 16 year old daughter an older Lexus IS 250 and all I can say is WOW!! Followed the directions exactly as described and it is hard to believe it’s the same car. Huge difference, really appreciate the video!!
Wow! Thank you! Excellent advice! I have two 15 year old cars that have paint issues from age and exposure. I cannot believe how easy it was to restore it with this technique. I’ve been putting off the job, because I didn’t think it was something I could fix myself. Well, I CAN fix it!!
Yo this guy is a pro if you didn’t hear. I mean he only mentioned it 900 times but I’m sure you didn’t hear
I watched the entire video. I dont even own a car
Haaaaaaaaaaaaa hahaaaa
😅🤣😂
what a loser you are, get a job. make your parents proud of you
lol 😂
Loser
My confidence is 10 fold after watching. I appreciate you making this. Seriously the video I’ve been wanting for awhile
