No one and nothing could ever replicate the angst, passion, and pain projected by Curtis's performance of this piece. This versions somber but true to its roots rendition is a truly honest performance by Murphy and Reznor which honors the original while the two remain true to their own artistic styles. Perfect merging on all accounts. Sad love.
IDK man, he started off saying "nothing could replicate" then this one "is true to it's...". Fine of he likes both but loves the original more... But why throw around superlatives, including, "true"? It's just babbling from over a decade ago!
Ah, trent the architect of sound. His NIN 1994 industrial version of this tune was phenomenal, made me into an instant fan. And this version, albeit a more mellowed down alternate version, still gives the song a cool, icy darkness to it.
Joy Division often played in places where U2, Siouxsie & The Banshees, and Bauhaus played. Peter Murphy must've regarded this performance as an homage to his late friend, Ian Curtis.
Listened to this seven times straight. Simply amazing rendition of this song. Curtis' lyrics, Murphy's voice and Reznor's composition. And it's live! Still sounds amazing. Wish I was there.
@@paulosmeek6286 Lol, relax. Did you just get your AA in music from community College? I understand what it means to be a composer. @@adamoliver82 Haha that's just put a huge smile on my face! Thank you! I'm sure we'll be having Dave back in the not too distant future..a wee matter of Luke Slater first..when we're eventually allowed out again haha.
Pete Murphy's voice hasn't changed a great deal since Bauhaus' first great single in 1979, 'Bela Lugosi's Dead' [which I got shortly after release, and still plays perfectly]. He still sounds fantastic. Great stuff! Problem is, the majoriety of people are sheep where music is concerned, and haven't the imagination to listen to music that's not anodyne pop pap. I, for one thank the late, very great dj John Peel for opening my ears to the 'good stuff' back in 1976. I'm not afraid of music, no sir!
@@grakkerful 364 days after you, i found ua-cam.com/video/C5VLN7CAf0I/v-deo.html and 1day later i jumped into here. Just in time and surely not the last one ;))
Yeah this cover is awesome. I've always been in love with Peter Murphy's voice. I love when Trent works with Peter Murphy and David Bowie. It just works, a great example I'm Afraid of Americans with David Bowie.
God, I'm glad that Trent got to record & tour with Bowie while he was here on Earth. & I hope he continues working with Murphy, maybe a full album finally? 👏🖤
This was also covered by Trent in Nine Inch Nails for the movie The Crow. Interesting how this movie brought back with it since release a lot of good material that remains timeless, even though the original song is by a great band, Joy Division. The original being a cornerstone of their greatest material in my opinion.
Where were all you JD fans 30-40 yrs ago? There were like only 3 of us then. The rest of you were wearing makeup and hair spray listening to hair bands. I remember all the fights just because of the music I listened to.
Are you talking Trent's "original" version? You know the original was done by Joy Division, right? I keep seeing these comments and I feel like people don't know Grant's The Crow version was a cover of a different artust.
There you go again! The guitar is very different, certainly the tone! What the hell does "true to its roots" mean? What roots? Its not like it's an old blues song! Its a good song, I'm glad you liked it, ten years ago anyways. But I hope your later music reviews have been a tiny bit more insightful! Or Stay strong and keep being excited but totally vague dude!
many people comment saying if david bowie was bitten by a vampire you would have peter murphy !have they seen the hunger yet? if david bowie bit pete murphy an pete murphy bit trent reznor with gary numan combo then i think the song would sound like this,we are so lucky that trent reznor has such respect for the originals an makes such epic sounds with them!
Cool--never heard this before. I think Mr. Murphy was the perfect person to do a cover of this, since he did all these good dark creepy songs with Bauhaus. I also had the privilege of seeing him live in concert in Detroit last year, and really enjoyed it--he mostly did Bauhaus songs---too bad he didn't perform this tune. He sounded even better live (like most good singers do,anyway.)
Peter Murphy's one of those rare singers who's really kept his voice *and* his intensity with age. He hasn't gone soft; he's still The Gothfather, and still sounds amazing.
Trent Reznor and Peter Murphy covering a Joy Division song. And people suppose Infinity War is the most ambitious crossover
Listen to yourself.
That’s funny
Hahahah. Well put!
Type O Negative's version of Summer Breeze is a much better copy 🥸

Joy Division is my favorite band, Trent is one of my favorite producers/artists and I love Bauhaus.
This is pretty perfect right here.
Simalar Wave ... :)
Agreed.
@@SonofHardrada Not a huge fan of the vocals but I like the heavy distortion, almost sounds like a live rendition by Joy Division.
Trent Reznor makes me glad that I am alive sometimes. It is strange how happy music can make you.
Trent shows his absolute class by enhancing great music and great musicians . Some from UK . Powerful stuff .
Peter Murphy makes me want to tear shit up. I love that voice

Just the thought of these two artists collaborating is amazing!
what a combination, Murphy's vocals is perfect for the setting
Pierre Horn And I thought Mick Karn and Murphy in Dalis Car was an interesting combination
Absolutely..dude can muster the dead to start dancing in their graves...seriously great voice and talent
Peter Murphy's voice... creepy, yet AWESOME.

um composition...what do you mean. His 'arrangement' of this Joy Division song? perhaps?

DAMN THIS IS JUST AWESOME, AMAZING COVER OF A JOY DIVISION LEGENDARY TRACK, THIS IS EVEN BETTER THAN 'THE CROW' VERSION. NUFF RESPEKT !
Saw Peter Murphy live outdoors years ago. It was cloudy and misty as it got dark...totally appropriate and the show was amazing!
The perfect Trifecta!! Who would of thought! Three of my favorites would collide and make this even more awesome!
Admittedly, I avoid Joy Division covers, because Joy Division’s originality was simplistic perfection. However, Peter Murphy and Trent? Killer cover!

Another JD cover worthy to be listened is Ceremony by Radiohead.

Joy Division is the reason I got into goth music, even though they were post punk, it's Gothic and influenced many bands to create even more goth. ;)
