    I love this man.
I totally agree with what he says about his work being a chunk of art rather than just singles. All my NIN albums, I listen to them as a whole. I prefer them imported in my phone as one whole file. I never skip songs, the whole album speaks for itself, it tells a story and i feel like that's the best way to listen to NIN, or to music in general.

I used to wonder if he was pretentious and trying too hard to be controversial. But...Comparing this interview to, say the one in 2010, he has really stayed true to his art-- not easy to do. He is indeed a true artist. Being an artist is not the same as being a musician or a painter, it's a way of looking at the world. "I'm more inspired, I guess, when I'm depressed than when I'm happy." Not all artists are like that, but his discomfort shares his honesty. Love your work, Trent.

He suffered with social anxiety and depression. There’s always madness attached to genius coming from the field of psychology you see it a lot in artists. This is just my personal view, but I think their quirks have an underlying skills that allows them to be good at what they do. Physiologically i don’t know if their brains are unbalanced or different that makes them be like this. All of them, all these artists are the same, take a look across the board. It would be interesting to study their brains.

the third section, about how he struggled with having a concept and then wanting to execute things in a certain specific way, rather than letting it happen naturally, speaks to me. that’s my biggest problem, im way too focused on the thousands upon thousands of details i can’t even comprehend yet, and how they’ll somehow amount to some grand picture. hearing that he scrapped that and things still worked out makes me feel reassured. the evolution of his sound segment was great too

Trulysarcastic44 Many Indie Video-Game artists took inspiration from both his attitude and business logic. Look up Risk of Rain or Mirrors Edge soundtrack, they might not admit it, but i am sure they were. There is nothing wrong with borrowing when it improves on genres.

The band did contribute parts to the songs, Hard to say who exactly came up with what and where, but i'm pretty sure Trent did not write that bass riff for Closer, that was his bassist and is pretty big part of the song. No doubt his drummer chris vrenna also came up with many of the drum beats and most the samples and sound design on broken and DWS which are also HUGE part of those albums.

If he (90s Trent Reznor) spit in my face, called me a bitchy piece of shit; beat me for 20 minutes with his microphone; chocked me out with the chord to said microphone; kicked me seventeen times with is steal toed combat boots; and spat in my face, I'd say thank you.

No misogynistic intent but in the end I'm a male who hates candles in fear I will burn down the damn house someday especially now that we are in an era where many other safer ambient lightning options are available.

What he says about Downward Spiral and not being able to pick out a single or such is kind of true. I bought it back in college where $12 w/tax or whatever was non-trivial, and I put it in the player and I still remember going "what...the...hell" with the whipping and noise on Mr. Self-Destruct. It's odd that having sunk the money into it kind of forced me to leave it in the player, long enough to warm up to the album...I think the Spotify/Internet-Time song-by-song approach might not create the same feeling of a stake in giving something a shot. It really isn't just "10 songs he happened to make at the same time"--I think the work has to be approached as an album, which is really a dying concept lately it seems. I grew to like it and think it was money well spent. So congratulations for sticking to the guns and making what you wanted to make, it was a nice piece of work...(albeit incredibly depressing, but, art's supposed to make you feel *something*, not always positive).

I had same experience with TDS. It was one of a handful of first cds I got when I was in 4th or 5th grade at Lechmere's, purchased on recommendation of my older sister. I had a very small portable Sony boom box with a single red bass boost button. Throw a couple batteries in there and could bring it outside by swing set. I put the CD in and when mr self destruct (which for years I thought was pronounced 'emm-arre' not mister lol) came on, i felt disappointed. I honestly didn't like it and dare i say i even felt regret that i spent the 11 or 12 dollars on it. I gave it more listens as one of only cd's I had and grew to love it.
NIN has been my favorite band since 90s, i used to collect all albums (which was stolen unfortunately during a period of addiction), have seem them from fragility tour right up to couple years ago. TDS is and has been one of my all time favorite albums. If you're new to this music give it a few play throughs, become familiar with it, it truly grows does grow on you greater than you could imagine.

It's too bad how the relationship between Reznor and Interscope ended. At the start of it, Iovine promised he would not interfere with Reznor's work and Reznor held him to that promise. Years later Iovine was trying to get Reznor to make music to get him "in the clubs" as Reznor recalled. After the debacle of finding out the company price gouging of his music without him being told, it was the final nail in the coffin.

Ahh, 1994. The year Reznor & Co released their second best piece of work. The 90's brought a lot of incredible concert going. Thoroughly enjoyable! Lucky enough to see Trent at least once during the Downward Spiral run. And let me tell you, he was INCREDIBLE LIVE. Not all bands can successfully make that transition. Another band would have to be TOOL. However, that was then and I don't know how either of the two sound live now. The last piece of work that I thought was amazing from Trent was off of The Lost Highway score, Perfect Drug. That one track was so refreshing. I will always deeply appreciate & enjoy his pre Fragile efforts immensely.
