Great video! I had the same problem on my C5 RS6 only a bit different. My solenoid bench tested fine, but I found out it didn’t have enough force when cycling forward to overcome the oil pressure. I cycled it on the bench with a power supply and I could push the solenoid with my thumb fairly easily. I replaced just the solenoid with a cheap Chinese one and so far it is working.
I bought two tensioners from Audi and they cost me about £1100 in 2015. What was harder to get were the hydraulic tappets which were like hens teeth to find. Some of my tappets were a bit worn so it was useful to replace them. I did all this when doing the timing belt on my 1999 4.2 Avant back in 2015. It was only last year at 160,000 miles it lost a big end on one piston and my beloved Audi got scrapped. First thing I did was remove those tensioners so I could sell them!
ive got a loud rattle when cold, not always, and both tensioners were bought new genuine when i rebuild my engine 5 yrs ago, waiting then for your video soon :) btw great video like always
Great video loads of information and very entertaining. Im getting one of these soon and wanted to check on the reported issues. Would love to see a video on the cambelt, timing and water pump be great to help us and give us information for when we do our own. Great channel keep it up !!
Fantastic video, great to finding the issues with you. If the units you have on are from China, i would go for them again. I would also read up on what other people have experienced with the Chinese parts. Also think about changing them every time you change the belt.
Thanks for watching 😁 yes this is what I'm thinking, apart from these little bits of debris the tensioners are still perfect spec wise. And saving £1500+!
My friend, who’s an Audi Master Tech, said to go Chinese because the cost of OEM isn’t worth it and in his experience, the Chinese 1s last for years worry free……🤷🏽♂️
Its a program called Elsawin, its VAG Haynes manual on steroids! its basically a copy of the main dealer software, I got mine off ebay for about £10 years ago. if you give it a google loads come up. Thanks for watching :)
@@SuperRon Thanks for the reply! I will just buy any version and try it since they are so cheap anyways. Great videos! Hope you make more RS6 videos but great content either way!
Yea they dont build them tech friendly! Vagcom is so much easier to use than ODIS jesus! Those rigs with the dso and urdi leads are a pain to forever switching channels for scoping. Price of parts is dreadful too. Great insight ron.
The best for VAG is VCDS VagCom, although it is quite expensive if its just a one off use. Use a cheap bluetooth obd reader and Torques app on my phone for quick scans, all for £10
Great video Ronnie, learn't something new today 🙂 When you do the cam-belt please make a video for us. I'm sure it will get plenty of views ;-) I'll share this latest video in my groups if you don't mind (y)
The chinese parts dilemma.. I'm facing that atm in considering if I should go with an OE radiator or all aluminum chinese one. On one hand, the OE rad lasted almost 40 years, but the chinese one is a third of the price.. If you've had any experience with aluminum chinese rads, lmk. Also, great vid Ron, I love the in depth diag
The problem with chineese stuff is theres no consistency, mine have been trouble free all this time but another set could last 5 miles. But the saving of £1200+ is a BIG saving! Glad you enjoyed the video 😁
How exactly did you pull the passenger side rocker cover? I’m struggling trying to get to the bolt on the coolant pipe to move it out of the way. Could you do a video on this? It would help me greatly and others as well!
@@SuperRon almost exactly the same mileage as my 6, I'm using Castrol edge fst 5w40 and about to put in Genuine Audi 505.01. Did you experience adjuster rattle at all during the phase change on/off in your S6?
Not that I noticed on the S6, but I never really listened. I did notice on this though when I was just free revving it up and down there was a little split second chain noise as the solonoid went from on to off. Nothing on start up or driving, just a little noise on phase change to off.
I think you've been lucky with those Chinese tensioner(s), a new one may just grenade itself after a few months. It's a super car at the end of the day, go OE
Referring to the cam Rattle on cold starts, is it a drawn out rattle? My C5 RS6 definitely has a slight rattle on cold start but it only last literally 1 to 2 seconds. Definitely sounds like a chain of some sort.
No that's pretty normal, just means the tensioner spring is getting a bit worn before the oil pressure gets up to the top of the engine and takes up the slack. Nothing dangerous, just the tensioner showing its age.
@SuperRon good deal, thank you for reply. You videos have made my RS6 ownership alot less stressful than it would have been. Keep them coming I appreciate you taking the time. My girl has 205,000 miles and still climbing 🤙
I’d bite the bullet go genuine and it’s done dusted no need to worry anymore. If you go Chinese I bet you would end up changing in a year or so anyway if they last that long.
That was most enjoyable to watch. Thanks Ronnie 😊
Thanks for watching 😁
Great video, good diagnostics, you should buy a lottery ticket!
Thanks for watching 😁

Thanks for watching 😁 touch wood, I haven't had any problems since!
Excellent video. From your description the cam phasing system sounds similar to the Porsche variocam system
Thanks for watching 😁

I did my S6 at around the same time, I wish I bought more at that price 😬 thanks for watching 😁

A little rattle on start up isn't uncommon, wouldn't be too concerned. Thanks for watching 😁
great video❤ Appreciate all the tensioner info and the cut away!
Thanks for watching 😁 glad you enjoyed it

Great to see you back at your unit working on your own stuff. When’s the next kit car or Zafira video coming?
Thanks for watching 😁 it's just finding the time to get down there. It's all still there as you see though 😃
Hi Ronnie, love your videos. Very informative. What manual did you use at 8mins? Would be great resource for my rs4. ;)

What version do you have? I found one for sale but it doesn’t seem to cover the RS6. Great video - very informative and helpful!
Not sure, I've probably had it 8+years. Mine only goes upto 2014 cars but has everything for rs4's and rs6's up to then.
@@SuperRon Thanks for the reply! I will just buy any version and try it since they are so cheap anyways. Great videos! Hope you make more RS6 videos but great content either way!

Thanks for watching 😁 the diagnostic equipment described on elsawin looks more out of the 80s, not modern cars 🤣
@@SuperRon agree. Wiring diagrams are awful too. Scrolling through 280pages following tracks as search function is useless.
🤣 technological advances 👍I love the ElsaWin for wiring diagrams.
I whant buy tha OBD what brand is and where you buy thansk really good video lm thinkin buy one this car

I can't remember exactly I'm afraid, if I do it again I will be sure to film it.
Not even any lifter tap on cold start!? What oil are you using?
No it is silent 😁 133k miles too. I use genuine quantum 5w40

@SuperRon I hear the exact same small rattle you are referring to, I'm glad it's a fairly normal thing!
I'd never noticed it before, only doing these tests indoors with the bonnet up. I'm not overly worried about it 👍
Can confirm that audi timing chains are ridiculously priced, I had an rs3 8p and for the chains and labour was 4k 😂
😬 theres got to be a limit somewhere!
Class vid👍👌

It could be I've had a good batch, but with China's quality control theres no telling what I'd get next 🤔 thanks for watching 😃
