Streets of Vancouver It's not about overplaying or the "less is more" kind of stuff, it's about playing music whatever the instrument, whatever the number of notes you need, as much is musical, it's a win to me.
Rodgebi yep, it most certainly is about a lack of overplaying in this specific performance by this specific drummer... some drummers constantly overplay but Morton Lund certainly is not in that camp on this tune
@@RogerBiwandu "it's about playing music whatever the instrument, whatever the number of notes you need," Exactly, because if it's more than the notes needed... then that's overplaying. You rephrased the original comment like you were presenting a new idea.
I totally agree. I first came across Morten when I was looking for info on one of those tiny DW kits and found a video of him 'messing about' on one in a studio somewhere. Couldn't believe what I'd just stumbled on! I still google him every now and then just to see if anything new pops up, as he is such a wonderfully tasteful player. I do wonder just how many world-class players are out there in the real world with precious little online exposure who will never come to public attention because the style of music they enjoy isn't popular enough to garner it.
For us Brazilians it is an honor to see a drummer play with such subtlety, precision and musicality. Congratulations to all those involved in this project.
le jazz s'invite dans le métal désormais,il n'y a qu'a écouter Leprous,Animals as leaders entre autre, the new generation of djent drummers are crazy..check out Camille Bigeault too,she is crazy...and french!
Love his change of grip at 0:24 then back at 5:16 His work at 4:36 is fire! "Well versed in the instrument" is an understatement! He REALLY shows the variability within each cymbal, and the musicality that can be had out of each one... Excellent ride choices, excellent ride uses, the crash was buttery too! That foundry reserve ride was dynamic AF, and the foundry reserve light ride was super-buttery!! Maestro!
I think I've watched this video 10 times now.this man is incredible. So so smooth, makes the drums and cymbals just blend perfectly. YOU sir are a master at your craft. One of the best I've seen in a while. What an inspiration, God bless you.!!!
I must have watched this video 100 times by now. Every time I watch and listen I can teach myself a new lesson. His playing is a thing a beauty to behold and is the perfect representation of the type of drumming I wish to achieve. I am forever grateful for this upload, you have no idea what it means to me.
Beautiful cymbals. Never played any Meinl. Mostly due to availability. These foundry reserve seem to be on par with Zildjian's K Constantinople series. Very dark and buttery. I like them a lot.
Thank you for the kind words. Where are you located? I may be able to determine if there is anyone in your neck of the woods that carries our cymbals. - Chris/Meinl
Why Meinl did you have to bring this guy? Whyyyy!!?!?!? OMG now I want a STAR kit (got a Starclassic maple). This kit sounds ASTONISHING, how did you do it? Sounds delicious, so musical, so "percussive" (I know, it's a frakcing drum set). In other words, sounds like this guy knows exactly what he is doing. Wow.
This is an art ya don't get to see much of... It takes alot of skill to play this yo. So chilled and relaxing kind of music is beautiful yo and that set with the cymbals together is gorgeous!!
From every flam to every ghost note was I intrigued! Captivated my interest the entire performance. Wish the tune went on another 7 min... Epic Drummer
The art of not-overplaying embodied splendidly...

This tune was composed by Lyle Mays who left us on February 10, 2020. R.I.P. Lyle. Thank you for all the music.
surprised we don't see more from morten lund. he's one of the most gifted and musical players on the web.
But does he play not on the web?

Patrick Campbell for real though that thing is nice. Must be like custom made or something.
In the classic Tony Williams yellow too, except I’d take this Tama star kit over his Gretsch setup any day of the week...
