Never in a million years could I even think about attempting something like this. Amazing skills and tools you have there. Also WOW Half-Life 2 is ACTUALLY PLAYABLE now
Played the Orange box on the Xbox 360. It was very playable there! And difficult as all hell. Yet my lucky star that the ring of death was only a internet joke for us. Ended up even playing GTA 5 on the Xbox 360! True troopers of a console gen they where for us. Even the Wii gave up before the Xbox 360's. The CD/DVD reader failed on the Wii... But the Xbox 360 lived on and on. I do not think any one I knew had a DDD. They where put in a closet only to be taken out for GTA5. Lucky us? They where not lightly used... And still lasted all that time. Controllers are simply horrible for shooter games. One of this days I should try and play HF2 with a controller and see how bad one where back in the day at games. HF2 was a fantastic game! Even now it was one of the few shooter games that I ended up playing with a controller. Even GTA 4 that horrible mess of a PC port was simply worth enjoying on a proper PC with a mouse to aim. GTA 5? Aaa. It was a grate send off to console gaming. A last hura before ditching it completly. More likley to buy a Steamdeck 2 then a Xbox/PS/Nitendon't. Do not even own a handeld outside of old trusty PSP's. Linux on desktop FTW!
It can be upgraded even futher with special aligning tools. You can find some videos of people installing Pentium III-s Tualatin in Xbox. Yet seeing a natively fit installation was nice and satisfying. An awesome content! 😀

The classic Xbox is basically a PC with a Pentium 3, Geforce 3 and DDR ram. If I'm not mistaken, it's also possible to upgrade the RAM, although it's quite hard to do.
There’s a new interposer from zzattack that is pretty awesome we’ve been using. Also custom 3d printed brackets for the original cpu heatsinks. I’ve installed a few on my channel. Great work on the 1ghz upgrade bro
A skilled man with a proper BGA station... That's the missing tool from my workshop. And the solder tip of all solder tips, of course. Very meticulous work my friend!
I watch stuff like this all the time and the algorithm just now put your channel on my feed. I've already ran through most your back log. Great stuff. I would love to see an equipment overview of your work space. Keep up the videos. I'll watch every one you post.
I remember seeing the same CPU upgrading mod in Japanese video game magazine Game Lab back when the original console was still around. It also had a physical switch that changes the clock for compatibility.
Awesome! the 1ghz P3 is the easiest cpu upgrade as its just Reballing no interposer adapter needed. The XBOX at 1ghz can run almost all games patched at 720p resolution! im playing MORROWIND patched at 720p with my 1ghz xbox on a 55" TV and the graphics still being good. You can also overclock the cpu by SOFTRARE too... so your 1ghz Xbox can go up to 1.4ghz!!! there is a recent overlock software for the xbox. The next steel is patch the game XBE file to make the game recognice the higher cpu speed, and enjoy.
This stuff is definitely cool. But why go through all this work when you can just use a PC? Just because? I get if there are certain Xbox exclusives you might want to play or just cause it’s a cool project. But seems like it would be better to just keep the Xbox stock for collection reasons imo.
@@Rico0333 stop spamming about emulators, 1ghz CPU on the xbox allows you to play 720p HD content like a 7th generation console, you can play a lot of original games at 720p on the original hardware a thing even xbox360 retrocompatibility cant do.
It's amazing the BIOS supports other CPUs. I would have expected they left out the microcode for everything but what the system was originally shipped with. This opens up for so much posibillities.. Kudos to you, sir. Having a BGA machine on hand helps too, ofcourse 😂
Really impressive work, and for something so important and fragile it was just another day at the office. I wish my hands were that steady, amazing dexterity choom
Question @11:53 : Do you have tests of emulators running on the Xbox, or even Linux (Debian, etc) to show that the upgrade is worth it for enthusiasts?
I'll probably make some kind of comparison video at a later time. I also want to see how much of a difference there is between stock CPU speeds and the upgraded CPUs.
It's the little things, really. I thought "HL2 time?" and then you played HL2 :') makes me happy. Also the xbox hl2 Breencast reverb is so good. CPU upgrade really seems to make the framerate much more playable.
Oh yeah if you compare the outdoor scenes, the 1ghz is noticeable. This is incredible, I wish I had the knowledge and the space for a setup like this. Subbed!
Omg... That outdoor section after the train station always made me laugh.. xD I am still so happy to have hl2 on the OG Xbox. This CPU upgrade definitely makes the game much more "playable". It's more like how hl1's PS2 port looks in frame rate comparison 👌
Interesting. First time viewer and new subscriber. Thanks for taking the time to include the "Raw" video if the process and not just entirely a view under a microscope.
Man, I wish we could have upgraded game consoles via a plug and play setup. Not the same, but we came close with what SEGA (CD/32X) and Nintendo (N64 DD) did back in the day. Thanks for stopping by.
IMPRESSIVE! Also there were are many games specially the late releases which could benefit from this. Original XBOX is an impressive piece of hardware, when optimization still mattered.
ive cleaned off boards, sucked solder out of through-holes before, soldered wires to small smd pins, but this BGA stuff looks like it could bring a grown man to tears

I remember when GTA Vice City launched on it and it ran considerably better than the PS2 version, and I threw it in my friends' faces like the mature young man I was. Lol. Some things never change!
