In a 2012 Lionel Richie tribute (where Lionel & Kenny beautifully sing Lady together), Kenny begins with the back story. He & Lionel didn’t know each other, when Kenny called Lionel, to write a song for his new album. When they met for the 1st time, in Kenny’s hotel room in Vegas, Lionel had a bit of a song (just 1 word, “Lady” & a bit of melody), which had been rejected by the Commadores. 6 months later, in the studio, Kenny recorded the 1st verse, asked where the 2nd verse was, & found out that Lionel was in the toilet, writing the rest of the song. In a later interview, Lionel adds to the story, making it even funnier. He said, the 1 word he had was actually “Baby”, but when they met, Kenny kept going on & on about his wife, repeatedly calling her “a Lady”, so when Kenny asked the name of the song, Lionel blurted out “Lady.”
The song was going to be Baby, the Commodores already had a song called Lady (you pick me up when I'm down). Thus he heard Kenny talking about his new Lady and reworked it. The Commodores were originally a Funk Band, I think they felt Lionel was trying to lead them in too far of a different direction. So, Lionel probably understands the Commodores could never have two songs called Lady.
Um sorry they did know each other. Kenny Rodgers and the first edition played for the same lable as lionel Ritchie back in the 60's they were the best if friends way back. First of all, kudos to Lionel Ritchie for writing such a beautiful song. You have two great singers from two totally different genres who interpret this song in their own styles. For me, Kenny's version is more refined and romantic, whereas Teddy's version is very raw and hella sexy! Both men did an outstanding job with this incredible classic, but because Lionel wrote it with Kenny in mind, he may have a slight edge IMO. Miss them both.
Teddy has been one of my favorite vocalists since the "Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes" days, and he does to a great cover of this song. In this case I have to agree with you, though.
This is definitely Kenny's song!!!! Teddy and so many others sang their hearts out on this one, and they did beautiful renditions of it, but what can I say... Kenny Rogers also did some amazing songs with Dolly Parton. And yes Kenny, growl at me some more! Good morning, Kenny 🤣😝🥰 You did it again, Royce!

I was fortunate enough to see one of his shows from this tour. Chicago area. We forgot to look at the letter where our car was, so we were waiting for most people to leave. A few guys came up and we told them this. He invited us to a party and promised to bring us back later. Imagine our surprise when we got in the huge bus owned by Kenny. Yes! Me and a girlfriend partied with Kenny at a Hilton. Kenny made them take us back, they did, in the big luxury bus. They drove that bad boy around until we found our car. My claim to fame 😍
I also saw a few shows in Vegas. Righteous Brothers, front row (shooting craps has its advantages) and the Moody Blues (good seats, first booth seat) . Different years in the very early 90s. We also saw Bob Hope in Atlantic City. I think he was 98 at the time. Maybe 96. I'll have to ask my brother what year we went. I went several times. He only went the once. He was old is my point.

Teddy put his heart into this song He definitely put his mark in it. I understand how hard it would be to chose the best. But to me it would have to be Kenny because it was his song. Really there was only a few songs that I liked by Kenny I wasn't a big county guy but the one he did with dolly Parton showed his skills. My band was Strictly hard rock southern rock.. lynard skyrnd. ZZ Top. and of course my friend Stevie ray Vaughan that i was lucky enough to jam with a few times in Austin Texas in the early 80s. I would love to see you react to him doing Texas Flood live if you never seen him check him out...when the king of blues BB King is blowed away that's saying something.. RIP Stevie 😇🤘😎
Kenny and Teddy ; both great singers, two unique voices. Every singer is challenged in making the song “their” song, their version. Good review and you are correct in the fact that it’s a hard choice to make on who does it the best! Keep up the good work.

My fiance has changed every aspect of my life. I spent the first half being the center of my universe with walls a mile high and a mile thick. After 15 years of friendship we got closer, closer, closer during my Covid layoff. We spent many days on messenger for hours and sometimes a majority of the day. She is everything to me and I have given her the second half on my life. I have yielded my heart and soul to her. She is making me a husband and a daddy. That's more than I ever accomplished. She is more than just the love of my life - she's my lady.
You should check out the Commodores song “Still.” Lionel Richie wrote the song Kenny just sang but he also wrote a lot of other songs for The Commodores. Some of the most beautiful music I’ve ever listened to. Lionel was born and grew up about 30 miles from my hometown.
Great reaction to a timeless love song! I agree with your analysis of both Kenny and Teddy. The one thing that may give Kenny the edge, is that he was truly singing to his wife. The feels where real. Also, many don't know that Lionel and his wife stayed in Kenny's guest house when they initially moved to LA. They developed a great friendship.
With permission , it’s the way men once were! And maybe they still are. For those are the guys that are sincere and express themselves honestly . This tune is from the heart wanting ,yet asking. You get that Angel and I appreciate your reaction for it is deeply felt, understood and known to those who see love for what it’s supposed to be, always .
Don't let Kenny's appearance fool you...anyone who grew up during this Era and on R&B music would never connect Teddy to this song! This song was not only a HUGE success, its an iconic song. Yes, Kenny Rogers AND Lionel Ritchie were that great. Legends in the music industry!
He only sung it once then got into his accident of course no one would connect Teddy to it most haven't heard his version. Imo Teddy has the best version by far but to each is own
it's really a very beautiful song it's one of my favorite songs that I love to hear it between period and period and the most beautiful here is the wonderful performance and sing for the singer Kenny Rogers
I can tell you this. When he originally sung it in an evening show on TV all my friends and I couldn’t stop talking about his performance in school. He really nailed it!
I love Lionel Richie but the passion and execution of "Lady" by Kenny Rogers is something else. This song was made for him and him for this song... ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥
Hard to beat the original singer when he has so much feeling already invested in a song since it is so close to his heart. Lionel is such a unbelievable writer and wrote this perfectly for Kenny about his new love in his life. Kenny could take the song to its zenith.

Favorite love song that makes me lose it everytime. Miss you, Kenny. Thank you for this beautiful song. 🌹
Islands in the Stream, Kenny and Dolly!
They both sang it their way, both are extremely talented & I enjoy both renditions.
Kenny and Teddy ; both great singers, two unique voices. Every singer is challenged in making the song “their” song, their version. Good review and you are correct in the fact that it’s a hard choice to make on who does it the best! Keep up the good work.
Aren't you glad that you were so privileged to have been able to listened and see these artists shared their talents..I know I have!!... these are singers that come around once in a blue moon!!!
When I first heard this song I was wishing he was singing it to just me.
a girl can dream 😜
@@RogueRxyce, if you liked this song from Kenny, then could you react to "The Gambler " and the Coward of the County " by Kenny Rogers? It'll give you a range of his story telling abilities. Both are loved by so many people who have heard them. This coming from a man who used to own Kenny Rogers Greatest Hits, on vinyl. Ps, love your smile and your reactions. Just found you. Much love.
@@RogueRxyce Haha. You're funny! 😊
Glad to see him live in Reno couple years ago.
And NOW you need to react to two more versions. First Lionel singing it solo, and then both Lionel and Kenny singing it together as they were best friends
Hi from London UK.
Kenny, pure class, an incredibly beautiful voice singing a timeless classic. Rlp Brother x
Kenny had one of the most amazing voices I have ever heard no one can sing this song better than him R.I.P Kenny
Kenny sings it best. I have heard many covers, even Lionel's but this song will always be Kenny's Lionel wrote it for Kenny.
That man can sing !!!! And thankfully showed the world. Simply beautiful!!!!
Great reaction! I’ve always loved this song especially Kenny’s version. When him and Lionel perform this at the tribute show was the best! But this song is written for beautiful women like you! You can see the joy of music and of life on your face 😘 when you hear something that sounds good! Thanks for the OG reactions 🤙🏽🤙🏽🤙🏽🤙🏽
Brings me back to the days when I just used to listen to Kenny's songs on repeat. RIP Kenny Rogers.
Kenny..All Respect. R.I.P..This Song,,WOW..One of my top ten For Real Love songs. You Can’t Go Wrong With This...😎
Make That Top Three..😎
You should check out the Commodores song “Still.” Lionel Richie wrote the song Kenny just sang but he also wrote a lot of other songs for The Commodores. Some of the most beautiful music I’ve ever listened to. Lionel was born and grew up about 30 miles from my hometown.
Still is my favorite Commodores song, hands down. It is so beautifully written and Lionel's vocals brings it all the way home.
“Still” and “Sail On” get me every time. I lost my dad when I was eight and those songs were very popular at the time.
Oh, my yes, the song "Still" is just as awesome as Lady.
Absolutely love 'Still' by the Commodores!
Love watching your reactions. You are a truly beautiful lady
He makes you feel he is singing to you❤️wow❤️👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
With permission , it’s the way men once were! And maybe they still are. For those are the guys that are sincere and express themselves honestly . This tune is from the heart wanting ,yet asking.
You get that Angel and I appreciate your reaction for it is deeply felt, understood and known to those who see love for what it’s supposed to be, always .
Rest in peace brother. You produced a song that touches ones heart. An ode to love. Thank you.
Lionel wrote it. Kenny changed the word "Baby" to "Lady". Kenny was newly married I believe at the time of this song.
With all due respect to Teddy and even the MAN himself who wrote this ballad.............Kenny ..OWNS this song . :)
Hard to beat the original singer when he has so much feeling already invested in a song since it is so close to his heart.
Lionel is such a unbelievable writer and wrote this perfectly for Kenny about his new love in his life. Kenny could take the song to its zenith.
One of the most memorable voices to ever perform! This song always gets me tearing up, because Kenny Rogers will never perform for anybody again! RIP Kenny Rogers!
Remember Kenny’s was the first version, Teddy was working off of what he saw Kenny do.
The light that you bring, the light that you bring!!! Daamn I love you Rogue ⚘️
How about Bee Gees song they wrote for Kenny and Dolly Parton. "Islands in the stream" I think it was called.
I just found your channel and have binge watching your reactions. Its priceless.
If this song doesn't float a woman's boat, nothing can
Awesome! Beautiful! Stunning! ... and the song was pretty good too. 😍
There is another version of this where kenny Rogers and Lionel Richie sang this song together
That growl and rasp- it’s to die for. He let us know it’s his song!
